#iamnewmexico @paulschmitphotography As my wife, 2- and 4-year-olds, and I continue to hunker down amidst the evolving pandemic, I've spent an almost unsettling amount of time at home, as so many are finding these days.  And yet, the demands of trying to transition to remote work, keeping two energetic young boys stimulated 24/7 while many of our favorite haunts are shuttered, and generally avoiding cabin fever has resulted in surprisingly little time to work on photography.  I'm hopeful that a solitary nighttime visit to one of the wilderness areas in my vicinity is in store for me this week (all state parks in NM are closed though, unfortunately). In the meantime, I had a few moments to process a quick self-portrait I took from Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge back in late January. . I don't normally attempt to turn the camera on myself during shoots, which are typically dominated by choreographed sequences of steps with little time to spare, but this particular morning I found myself with my second planned comp lined up and shooting, a second body and lens in my camera bag, and a half hour to spare before astro twilight, so I gave it a go.  About an hour earlier, I caught Rho Ophiuchi and Mars rising behind the rightmost tree in this shallow pond, after which I shifted a bit north to catch the Milky Way core rising behind this arboreous trio of silhouettes.  Despite the occasional breeze, it was a delightfully placid, brisk morning with starlight reflecting from all directions off the glassy surface of this little desert oasis. #yourshotphotographer Captured with the very night-capable @nikonusa #nikonz6. #nikonnofilter. . 13 October 2018, 23.30h - Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma Driving up to La Palmas highest point to see the sunset is the thing you must do when you visit La Palma. But how many have ever seen a beautiful moonset? Like the Sun (and the nearby planets of our solar system) the moon is turning into a very nice orange shining object when it comes closer to the horizon which - of course - makes sense. In this night the moonset was more special and I guess there was something going on in the atmosphere. We also had these green airglow and there is probably a connection to it. Anyways - it was a spectacular scene with the Milky Way, the airglow and the 19.9% crescent of the moon, setting. Also the reflection of the moonlight at the Residencia - the place where the scientists and engineers stay between their shifts was pretty cool. That moment left me a bit emotionally because it were my last hours at the roque de los Muchachos this year - but some very intense and beautiful - and I could share it with my very special friend and best partner in crime - Annika. Photo credit: @paulschmitphotography "Convergence" . I’m releasing my latest image as part of my entry into the @natgeoyourshot #NatGeoMazdaContest. It’s been a little over a year since I started playing around with these celestial time blends, seeking to balance the spectacle of favorably aligned, contrasting astronomical events with the raw beauty of the Land of Enchantment. An image like this starts with identifying the right time of year for the low-hanging sun to sit near the Milky Way galactic core along the horizon. (Typically, early spring for sunrise, and late summer for sunset) Then, I seek a landscape with lots of diverse textures and colors to take advantage of the changing light conditions and moods cast over a single scene. Finally, I travel to my location and fine-tune my composition with the astronomical alignments in mind. As the scene unfolds, I take dozens to hundreds of images of the same scene over a few-hour period, blending the best ones together in the final image. . This shot, featuring the awe-inspiring El Malpais National Monument, was taken just miles from where I captured my first image in this genre a little over a year ago. These gorgeous ancient lava flows are covered in all kinds of flora, and this isolated, curvaceous sandstone bluff ensconced within an endless sea of jet-black basalt had been calling my name for some time. I didn’t know precisely how I was going to blend these images until I got home and saw the green and red bands of airglow in the night sky, perfectly balancing the curves of the cactus skeleton and distant clouds. I was even lucky enough to capture a bright, reddish meteor during the shoot! . Cosmic Flat Tire 07 August 2018, 0:28h - Somewhere, Fuerteventura „You are not allowed to leave the asphalt road“ said the guy from the car rental service to me. „Of course not!“ was my answer. 3 days later I found myself in this situation. After leaving the asphalt road immediately to get to the dark and nice spots, I was thinking back to this guy there at the service point. Shit. One hour earlier I was already on my way home because it was cloudy and I was exhausted and very tired. But then I saw some Stars and very soon the sky was clear. So I turned around and took a road I discovered earlier during daytime. It was a very nice spot and I started to work on a nice Panorama until I realized that the car was in the photo so I parked it a few meters away very quick. 20 minutes later after finishing my work there I just wanted to get home and enjoy a nice shower, a beer and my bed. I even left the camera on the tripod in the trunk. Back on the asphalt road I heared a sound that no one ever wants to hear. Blup Blup Blup Blup - Fuck. Never changed a tire before. No signal on my smartphone. No one around. Hm. So I parked the car next to the road again and checked the tools and stuff. Nice - the description is in Arabic. But the pictures where very helpful and after 5min I found out that this is a very easy task. So I was relaxed and took out my camera again which still was setup perfectly. A few seconds later I started laughing. This is probably the worst and most authentic Astrolandscape photo I have ever seen so far. And I am sure I am not the first one with this experience. In the end this moment turned out to be not that bad - I learned to change a tire, lost some fear of having a problem somewhere out at night alone and got a nice photo. Never expected that. Later I enjoyed the best shower and the most tasteful beer and went to bed with a big smile. Muchas gracias full insurance!
