Richie Valens, The Big Bopper, and Buddy Holly. The three singers that my vintage aesthetic started with. I grew up listening to them with my dad. Listening to their music now makes me happy and nostalgic because I grew up listening to them.

After following a long series of roads that can hardly be called paved, we found the intersection of Gull Avenue and 315th Street where an enormous pair of glasses sits atop concrete posts, memorializing the three musicians; Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P, "The Big Bopper" Richardson; who died after their plane crash landed in the field beyond on February 3rd, 1959. 60 years ago today, the Winter Dance Party rolled into the Kato Ballroom in Mankato, MN. Well, that was after a 394 mi trek in sub-zero temperatures. This was the longest leg of the really ill conceived itinerary for this tour...but not by much. The weather already started taking its toll on both the musicians & unfortunately, the busses. The crash site has become a shrine of sorts and is usually littered with flowers, scarves, records, and rosaries; along with offerings of cigarettes, beers, and thick-rimmed glasses. Not to mention hundreds and hundreds of guitar picks. All of that was covered in snow went I visited. The memorial of the pilot; Roger Peterson, who also perished in the crash; needed to be dug out of the ice. That could be either because the previous visitors were unaware of it or because some still blame the man for the crash. I only knew it was there because of photos I had seen. The ground was too frozen to clear off much else though. It’s lucky someone planted a flag out there or we might have walked right past the whole thing.
