This day will always be my mother’s birthday, even though she’s been gone for 3 years. She would be 85... She was in her 50’s here. After my brother died, she’d written a book about parental grief. Her agent got her on the Oprah show. She called me, gasping for air (she’d promised Steven she’d quit smoking and couldn’t remember how to breath while driving or talking on the phone). “What am I going to wear?” That was cue for “we need to go shopping!” This beautiful green wood suit was the result. My mother, a beauty, could rock a pair of shoulder pads! The Oprah appearance was bizarre. The show turned out to be focused on families who had a member who’d disappeared. Husband never came hime from a business trip, son went missing while hiking in Hawaii. Mom’s book never dealt with particular kind of awfulness. She, and the subjects of her stories, all had children who were dead. Not inexplicably missing, dead. Judith maintained her poise, as always. But what could she say? She couldn’t comment expertly about missing loved ones. Nor could she effectively plug her own book. BUT she was on OPRAH and she looked fabulous! I had a realization that we are “home” officially. The compassionate friends balloon launch was a great way to get back into the swing of things in Staten Island. It’s been 20 long years since pattyanne died and we have been coping very well. I don’t know where we would be without the compassionate friends!!
