Rewatched 'The Final Problem'. Of course it's not a detective story and not even a thriller - it is more a philosophical parable, a mythical search of one's identity which could be an end, but is in reality just a beginning of Sherlock's journey. It is the only episode of the show that keeps the viewer in suspense until the very end and has a perfect hommage to every permanent character and actor. Benjamin Caron's direction crowns the story perfectly, and the real stars of the night are of course Benedict Cumberbatch, Sian Brooke and Mark Gatiss. I've probably said it before but I say it again: it doesn't matter if Martin Freeman doesn't want to return - let's rename the show 'Holmes' and have a four and a half hours long celebration of the three most prominent British actors of our time (two of whom are so undeservingly less famous than the other). But no, I probably talk to much. Don't mind me. I only add that I can't imagine Mycroft and Eurus without the wonderful voices of Valery Storozhik (Валерий Сторожик) and Irina Kireeva (Ирина Киреева), who did a voice acting for Mark Gatiss and Sian Brooke in the Russian version of the series, and also give a link to the video where I play 'Who You Really Are' on piano (recently @rey-jake-therapist asked me about my talents - consider it one of them ;) )

Sometimes I ask myself, "Does it get more romantic than the 'How would you describe me, John?' scene?"

And then I remember the "'This is family' 'That's WHY he stays'" scene, and oh yes, it does.

As I understood, the original scene had nothing to do with Molly at all. So Molly never appeared in the original script of 'The Final Problem'.

(Here is my source. I don't remember when exactly they talked about it, but I hope I understood them correctly)

I'm honestly a bit worried about what they had originally planned for Molly that others disliked so much. With the tone of the episode in mind I can think of two things:

They solved the puzzle and realized that Molly was never in the coffin to begin with. Sherlock smashing the coffin could be a leftover from this.

She really was there and they solved the puzzle, but it didn't save her, because Eurus doesn't play fair.

Watching Sherlock Series 4 again

Well, I dislike 'A Scandal in Belgravia' very much, and I find 'The Reichenbach Fall' just silly, but 'The Final Problem' is my favourite episode of 'Sherlock', and I'm so exasperated with the constant fandom mantra of how 'they' hated it, and how disappointed 'they' were with it, and how 'they' don't count season 4 as canon, that it almost makes me want to quit this all and go, but then I remember that it is Mark Gatiss' favourite episode too, and I know that I have to stay simply to remind people about this fact.

So. If I stand by what I said in my previous post that Sherlock has comittment issues. It would make sense that it could be possible they stem from the loss of red beard at such a young age.

The loss of his best friend shattered and scarred him for life, and he never again creates the same kind of bond with another being. This is why he rejects the idea of sentiment and attachment throughout the series. He tries to block out the emotion itself and becomes bitter towards it, creating a self-conflict.

He isn’t void of emotions. Obviously. He just masks them and convinces himself he’s a high-functioning sociopath.

Part of this is because after the loss of red beard he subconsciously formed the idea that it’s dangerous to be close to anyone because of the heartbreak caused by their loss.

And he also probably has the idea that anyone close to him could be in danger just by being such. (IE: John, Mary, Molly, Mrs. Hudson, Lestrade). So he barricades himself from forming such relationships with people out of subconscious protection for both them and himself.

All this stemming from the loss of his childhood best friend.

Yes, we don't know that much about Uncle Rudy, but him being in 'Sherrinford' works only as an AU. After all, Eurus controlled the whole prison - and she just ignored the fact that the very man who put her in this place is here too? Just let it go unnoticed?

'Sherrinford' is not a place for smart people, it's a place for dangerous people. Neither Mycroft nor Sherlock are dangerous enough to be put there. Yes, Sherlock does the drugs, but never without a concrete aim. It always serves his case; after all, he's not Patrick Melrose. And neither Sherlock nor Mycroft are sociopaths - unlike Eurus. The whole concept of 'The Final Problem' is that the three of them are different and help each other navigate in this world. So to put all of them in 'Sherrinford' requires an AU, in my opinion.

Headcanon time. I think Mycroft counts on that there is a possibility that he will end up in Sherrinford should his mind ever deteriorate in some way. His brain is too dangerous to unleash upon the world if he loses control of it.

I think he also fears that the drugs will ruin Sherlock's brain so he needs to be sent there. He knows that this would kill him, because he's like a wild animal that should not be caged.

Maybe Uncle Rudy had to go there before them. Maybe he is still there?
