You know how there is always that book/ series/ author that you’ve been meaning to read for AGES but somehow has escaped getting read? Well, Christina Henry’s books have been that for me. I am SO glad that I have finally started!!!!! The Girl in Red was nothing like I was expecting and even better than I hoped! A kickass female, positive representation and a really engossing retelling as well! . I am always a bit unsure how to approach retellings, especially when I know the original story so well! What I do love is when a modern twist is actually modern - Henry sets her story in a very near future... with a contagious virus that is killing off the population! I loved that all the original tropes were in the story, just improved! Now I’m off to read every other book by Christina Henry! Add this to your TBR... you know you want to! 😉 . Eine düstere Dystopie, die mich vollkommen in ihren Bann gezogen hat

In "Die Chroniken von Rotkäppchen - Allein im tiefen, tiefen Wald" geht es um eine Viruserkrankung, die zunächst mit Husten beginnt und wegen fehlender Heilmittel zum Tode führt. Die Protagonistin Cordelia, welche auch wegen ihres roten Hoodies Red genannt wird, ist bestens auf diese Pandemie/Apokalypse vorbereitet. Nicht nur dass sie eine vorausdenkende Person ist, sondern auch weil sie ein großer Fan von Horrorgeschichten und -filmen ist, verhilft ihr das sich bestmöglich auf diese Situation einzustellen. Gemeinsam mit ihrer Familie möchte sie zu ihrer Großmutter flüchten, um sich in der abgeschiedenen Waldgegend vor dem Virus zu schützen. Doch leider nimmt keiner außer sie das Virus ernst, was schwere Folgen für ihre Familie hat. Allein muss Red sich den Weg zu ihrer Großmutter durchschlagen und den Gefahren dieser düsteren Welt trotzen.

Das Buch wird aus den Perspektiven vor der Krise und der Reise zur Großmutter beschrieben. Diese wechseln sich stets ab und laufen am Ende zusammen. Das hat mir sehr gut gefallen, da ich mich immer gefragt habe, was in der Vergangenheit alles passiert und was in Zukunft noch passieren wird.

Mir hat diese Geschichte wirklich gut gefallen und das aus mehreren Gründen. Zum einen fand ich den Perspektivenwechsel sehr spannend, zum anderen fand ich die Charaktere vielfältig, stark und authentisch. Ich fand es toll, dass die Protagonistin trotz ihrer körperlichen Behinderung eine willensstarke und selbstbewusste Persönlichkeit ist. Auch ihren Bruder Adam fand ich mit seinem kindischen Verhalten realistisch, wodurch ich mich gut in Red hineinversetzen konnte, die oft von ihrem Bruder genervt war. Weiterhin fand ich die Bezüge zu den Dystopien, Horror- und Science-Fiction-Filmen sehr gut in die Geschichte eingebaut.

"The girl in red" ist der englischsprachige Titel und hat daher nur wenig mit dem Märchen Rotkäppchen zu tun, obwohl es doch einige Ähnlichkeiten gibt, wie der Weg zur Großmutter oder Cordelias roten Hoodie. Ich finde, man sollte sich jedoch nicht so sehr an dem Namen festhängen und der Geschichte offen gegenüberstehen. Denn das Buch bietet eine düstere und sehr authentische Dystopie mit starken Figuren und einer grausamen und menschenleeren Welt. Ich bin positiv von der fesselnden und mitreißenden Geschichte überrascht worden, weshalb ich dieses Buch als eines der besten Bücher der Reihe bezeichnen würde.

Book tags for IG I run a virtual, international #bookclub on Facebook and The Girl in Red was one of the higher polling books from the list of choices for our first book (Stephen King's The Institute won). However, life and waiting on a largish group of people to finish reading King's book, and then scheduling a virtual meet-up that worked for everyone spread across at least 6 different time zones happened. After finishing the book for the club's discussion earlier, several folks in the club decided to read The Girl in Red while they waited on me and the others. And while it's been on my to-read list for a few months, I've been trying to get through ARCs with promised reviews first. Plus, I wasn't sure I wanted to read about a worse #pandemic that caused an #apocalypse while being stuck in the middle of an actual pandemic and a somewhat personally apocalyptic world... But I'm so glad I did read it. The Girl in Red is a fast-paced, adrenaline-fuelled race to Grandma's house through a post-apocalyptic world filled with mostly evil men who have shed even that thin veneer of civility that they were forced to wear to conform with the rest of society Before Something Happened. Wolves would have been preferable... I actually had to put it aside a couple of times because while it's fabulous storytelling, it cuts a little too close to the bone at times. Red is a wonderful heroine, strong despite her physical limitations and the many emotional injuries she suffers through the course of the book, smart, resourceful, and determined to make it to her Grandma's house. I'd want her on my team if I were in the world in this book. Hell, I want to BE her, and have already started to reconsider my approach to the actual pandemic in which we're living. First post... I’m tired

First post... here we go... ok first of all I’m just doing this “to feel better about myself” (according to my therapist) ... hi.. im the girl in red... with ton of flowers around her.. I’m trying to do this private from my friends, boyfriend, family... basically everyone that I know.. but public for you....
