Kevin Phillips joined The Debate podcast and discussed Newcastle’s victory over West Brom that punched their ticket for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. It was a rather dramatic night in the end but Steve Bruce and his squad secured a nail-biting 3-2 victory against the Championship leaders and are now into the quarter-finals of the tournament. But according to Phillips, there was one man who stood out for him and that was Miguel Almiron as the 26-year-old attacking midfielder dropped a brilliant display. Here’s what Phillips said on The Debate podcast (4/3/2020): “He’s become more clever in the last year. He’s getting his head up a lot more, he’s showing a lot more composure, of course, the work rate is still there and you can see how much he’s adored by the Newcastle supporters. Tonight he showed a bit of everything – he showed intelligence, his decision making at the right time was spot on, his finishing was outstanding. He looks a top-quality player.” Since these words are basically coming from a West Brom perspective, seeing how Phillips is a former player of the club himself, the praise is just that much more meaningful. Of course, it’s also quite warranted as Almiron netted a brace on the night, definitely doing his part of the job on the pitch and making sure his team advanced into the quarter-finals. This in itself is a great achievement for the Magpies but it remains to be seen if they can do even more. Newcastle fans, what did you think of Almiron’s performance vs West Brom? Together with those of a riverscape, rocks, flowers, and branches of cedar and bamboo, the magpie is one of six images painted by Yao Shou along the length of this handscroll. Its portrayal represents a venerable genre of painting known as “bird-and-flower,” whose finest artists had achieved extraordinary refinement and realism by the eleventh century. Yao Shou’s vision, however, was far more personal if seemingly simpler. He described the magpie almost solely in varied tonalities of black ink; the branches are accented with darker twigs and dotted leaves but possess little sense of spatiality; and the bamboo leaves are rendered in freely executed strokes of pale blue. Yao Shou accompanied the magpie—as he did its companion images—with an original poem written in his characteristically elegant cursive script and signed with his courtesy name, Gongshou: In the bright moonlight, why does themagpie circle three times beforealighting?During sunny days, it sings on the greenbranches.I also practice divination to find the placewhere the magpie often roosts.It stays on the rooftop of the old master’shouse, and the stars arrive late. The title and artist’s biography combine to add poignancy to this work. “Pillars of the Country” refers to the vital role of intellectuals in supporting China’s integrity. Almost thirty years earlier, gratuitous slander had driven Yao Shou from a prestigious career in government service to retirement as a painter, calligrapher, collector, and scholar —  all pursuits of a traditional literatus. Now advanced in years, he expressed his cultivated ideals in both the willful spontaneity of his brushwork and the informed allusions in his inscription, adapting each line from that of a celebrated poem from centuries past. As documented by several seals impressed on its surface, this painting once held an honored place in the collection of the Qianlong emperor (r. 1736–95), China’s most passionate imperial collector. the magnus protocol ep2 spoilers under the cut !

as someone who likes cataloguing, i think magp002 is flesh-aligned. possibly also stranger. flesh is the fear of being mutilated beyond recognition, of being changed (physically). yeah, there's not a lot of 'fear' in regards to daria making the adjustments, but being aligned with a fear doesn't just mean fear of something. in fact, most avatars (as seen in tma) tend to kind of worship their patrons (simon fairchild, judy the fire lady*, and obviously jonah magnus), so daria does seem like she's on the brink of being a flesh avatar. maybe she'll show up in later episodes, who knows? (jared hopworth, that you?) the stranger isn't the main fear in magp002, more of a... side fear. the fear of things not being 'quite right'. the uncanny valley, basically.

it's implied a bit when daria talks about her dysmorphia, during one of her adjustment sessions when she talks about how some parts 'weren't quite right yet'. it's a little stranger-aligned, with the little identity issue thing, finally seeing someone interesting, someone worth knowing when she looks in the mirror after she visits ink5oul.

not quite stranger, but there's specks of it. the flesh is the main character in this one.

no theorizing here, but just some analyzing and rambling. i didn't go deep into it, mainly because there's a bit of trouble organizing the thoughts. i just like assigning fears to statements, what can i say?
