Today our stop is in Birmingham, 1851 with another brilliant reprint map by John Tallis & J.Rapkin.

Birmingham is a major city in England’s West Midlands region, with multiple Industrial Revolution-era landmarks that speak to its 18th-century history as a manufacturing powerhouse.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because of that is known as the ‘first manufacturing town in the world’ and was hailed as the 'City of a Thousand Trades’ after it achieved city status in 1889, thanks to the number of businesses that chose to base themselves in the area, largely due to its vast water network.

Berlin, its capital, is home to art and nightlife scenes, the Brandenburg Gate, and many sites relating to WWII. Munich is known for its Oktoberfest and beer halls, including the 16th-century Hofbräuhaus. Frankfurt, with its skyscrapers, houses the European Central Bank.

A highly decorative and finely engraved mid-19th-century map of Germany, 1851, which was engraved by J. Rapkin (vignettes by N. Whittock & J. Hughes) and published in John Tallis. The map show views of Coburg, Dresden, Cologne from the Rhine, the Palace of Saxe-Coburg (birthplace of Prince Albert), Martin Luther’s house in Frankfurt, silver mines in the Hartz mountains and a triple portrait of Guttenburg, Faust and Schoffeer, the ‘inventors of printing’.

To end our week this beautiful historical map of the Ottoman Empire.

The Ottoman Empire was one of the mightiest and longest-lasting dynasties in world history. This Islamic-run superpower ruled large areas of the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and North Africa for more than 600 years.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Finally, after fighting on the side of Germany in World War I and suffering defeat, the empire was dismantled by treaty and came to an end in 1922, when the last Ottoman Sultan, Mehmed VI, was deposed and left the capital of Constantinople (now Istanbul).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Turkey was declared a republic on October 29, 1923, when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938), an army officer, founded the independent Republic of Turkey. He implemented reforms that rapidly secularized and westernized the country.

At its height, the Ottoman Empire, centred in Istanbul, stretched from the Crimea to North Africa, but by the mid-nineteenth century, it was crumbling.
Russia had gained significant areas north of the Black Sea, including the Crimea (now part of Ukraine), in the years around 1800.
In June 1853 Tsar Nicholas I invaded the Ottoman territories to the west of the Black Sea: the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, outlined in green on the map. After failed international attempts at diplomacy, Turkey declared war on Russia on 4 October 1853.

One of my favourite cities and places to visit is Edinburgh, always strikes me with its beauty.

I never get tired of climbing the cobbled streets of the Royal Mile in the Old Town and admire the grand Gothic landmarks. Its architecture is both staggering and stunning. 
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The best time for me is during the summer when the city comes alive with music and art during the Fringe Festival. 
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It shows parishes, buildings, tram routes, omnibus routes, and railroads.
It was made by Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.

We are traveling back today to Rome! A mesmerizing mix of modern and ancient, the capital of Italy is a rare and colossal city.
❤️Rome is known as the “City of Love” ❤️ and, the explanation is all in the name. If you reverse the word ‘Roma’ (the Italian word for Rome) you get 'Amor’ – meaning love. And love is something that resonates throughout the entire city.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our reprint map of the city of Rome, 1829 by Venanzio Monaldini, indicates all of the Antiquities and New Decorations. The views are of both Roman ruins such as the Pantheon of Agrippa, Trajan’s Column, and the Colosseum (called here “Anfiteatro di Flavio”), and important city buildings such as St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, the Campidoglio and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. 
The central map shows streets, plazas, significant buildings, and landmarks, with a key in the lower-left indicating some major monuments. A compass is drawn in the lower right. Beside it is a list of 14 neighborhoods of Rome, along with the map’s publication information.

Old Maps Library today is taking us to tour into Manchester, 1851. This was the year that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert paid their first visit to Manchester and Salford.
It was also the first time for a century and a half that a monarch visits the region.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The escort for the royal party included a Guard of Honour of the Yeoman Cavalry who accompanied them as far as Cross lane, the boundary between Pendleton and Salford. A crowd of about 800.000 people accompanied the Queen’s procession throughout the city. 
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
