Boring Stats Post - Length of short stories
I want to write short stories for sci-fi magazines. I figured it'd be good to know what general length these magazines tend to publish.
But also i'm lazy so this isn't very thorough.
Asimov's Science Fiction
The Jan 2024 issue contained 7 short stories. The shortest of these was 2 pages long, the longest was 13, and the average was 8.2 pages. In this case, a page was roughly 600 words long.
So, roughly, an Asimov short story is between 1200-8000 words
Analog Science Fiction & Fact
The Jan 2024 issue contained 14 short stories and one flash fiction.
The flash fiction was about 2 pages long (it was a bit long. I've seen previous flash fictions that were like, a couple paragraphs.)
The short stories were between 2 and 10 pages, with an average of 6.4
In this case, a page contains between ~700 words, though they can be as short as 150 if they're the first page of the story (which is mostly taken up by the title in big font), etc. It's probably sensible to use 600 words as an average again.
This would mean that the typical Analog story is roughly 1200-7000 words.
Wow. its about the same. who'd have thought.
Clarkesworld
Last year in a previous post I looked at Clarkesworld, so for my own convenience I'll transpose those numbers here.
Between issues 198-202 Clarkesworld published 8 stories per magazine (aside from one month which had 7). The average story was just over 6000 words long, but this was due to an outlier that was 23,300 words long. Clarkesworld doesn't really separate stories by length so just chucked in a novella or something that one time. Weird.
So, roughly 6k words for the average, again.

Tumblr media
this is less a tutorial and more a semi in-depth explanation on my process while taking screenies. my do’s and don’ts about lightning, angles, text/dialogue, close-ups and other!
as a disclaimer, anyone is free to take their screenies however they want and this is just my personal preference and opinions ♡ everything is under the cut! i did say its LONG so dont say i didnt warn u 😳
i use the nobluv2 and noglo mods by luumia! i recommend them 100000%
1. lightning
Tumblr media
with its exceptions, this being i’m in a room with candles/chandelier/anything that doesnt naturally produce a white light OR ambiance reasons, my setting with screenies is with the ‘Neutral White’ color. this is for me, more visually appealing than just bathing your sim in yellow light.
EXAMPLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
warmer white:
Tumblr media
poor lit:
Tumblr media
good <3:
Tumblr media
i usually test my lightning before i actually take any screenies so my sim is well-lit but also preventing overexposure bc of the lighting. an example of overexposure is when for example the lighting is SO strong, your sim looks like its ‘shining’
Tumblr media
you can see it here on her chest highlights, her arm and her cheeks. i exaggerated it here so its more obvious. fixing overexposure is HARDER than upping the brightness in a poor-lit screenshot. overexposure and makin sims look like they are SHINING is a crime. JAIL
Tumblr media
the best light ever tbh. just dont get... to carried away
Tumblr media
1.2 outdoor lightning
Tumblr media
this is one a bit trickier depending on your location but USUALLY your screenies would look well dark. again, test lightning before actually shooting screenies! i generally look for a lamp posts that have good lightning and shrink them down so if im taking angled shots, it doesnt get in the way. change the color to neutral white and if its too much lightning, just lower the dimmer:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. just no
just no to all this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in general, you can ZOOM to the max, and with the scroll-wheel zoom out THREE TIMES. four times we on the edge but its still acceptable. five times and you are goin to JAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
in general i also recommend having a semi-big room so you can move around without any problems. small rooms DO work but chances are while moving around you’re either going to go outside the room, run into a plant in the shot or into another decor item.
Tumblr media
for example, this is a ‘small’ room. while taking photos i have run into the bookshelves for over the shoulder shots like 8000 times. still, doable, but why put myself thru the suffering>?????
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2.2 fill the room
Tumblr media
nothin sadder than, for example, doing a bedroom scene and there just being...a bed. the game comes with so much clutter and theres also a lot of clutter cc to make rooms seem more ‘lived in’. its also a lot more visually appealing than the room being empty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. angles for screenies
my controversial OPINION!!!! i dont care for FULL surroundings shots for more than for a singular panel. THERE I SAID IT!!! usually i show the surroundings/scene setting in ONE panel and then i move on to other angles. again, has exceptions. these being a banquet, party, ball, another sim joins the scene, montages, etc! ANYWHERE that has something happening with multiple people in general.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for example, i don’t see why repeat the same angle with different poses. i can do it for one panel, but for the next ones? there’s the option of over the shoulder shots,  detail shots, them looking at each other shots, cinammon tography shots........... more than likely your reader already has an idea of where your characters are so showing it in every single panel is not necessary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
always try and leave a lil breathin room for the heads on top so it isnt all CRAMPED! but this all depends on the pose, if theres a height difference included in said poses and the angle you are taking the screenshot from!
same thing about not just doing...full on surrounding shots for when something is HAPPENING. say, someone is fainting, collapsing...ANYTHIN!! theres so many shot options than just repeating the same angle over and over again. DONT BE SHY!!!! DO VARIETY !!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we in photography class now. BUT yes keep these in mind ALSO while taking photos so it isnt just the same angle, same distance just different pose. your sim has a nice outfit? showing it once is enough! every panel? ummmm......... your sim is crying?  do a medium close up/medium shot and not a full body shot!
Tumblr media
3.1 close ups
your close ups and ALL screenies in general, don’t have to be FRONTAL only. they can be right/left side, a lil angled...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
waist/chest level is a good level for a close-up sim wise since if you ZOOM in too much WELL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. text/dialogue
i’d recommend any SANS-SERIF fonts. serif fonts are so hard to read even if nice looking. usually a font-size of over 40px+ works and you can add outside stroke and even drop shadow!
i personally use calibri (bold italic) for my screenies, but other subtitle fonts like arial, myriad pro, helvetica...really any sans-serif ones work.
my stroke settings:
Tumblr media
i also wouldn’t recommend putting 4000 word paragraphs in ONE screenie because it’s just visually exhausting. the MAXIMUM i’d do and thats if ABSOLUTELY necessary is FOUR!!!! lines of text. id keep it to three ONLY and thats if your text is the same size as mine. if bigger then two 😳
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yes <3:
Tumblr media
another no-no for readability is INSIDE stroke or adding bevel/emboss to the text. pick bright, contrasting colors to the background or even clothes your characters are wearing so it’s not hard to read.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
something a lil extra i also recommend is if your dialogue has different sentences and one ends and another one starts in the same line, continue it on another line. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE ok lets see:
Tumblr media
the “Yes, maybe I went on [...]” continues on the first line, but to make it a bit easier to read just press enter and move it to the second line so it’s on it’s own line.
Tumblr media
same thing for the "Be nice or [...]” line! it gets cut off to the third line anyways, so just put it in a singular line. final result:
Tumblr media
for me, this is easier to read, less I GUESS ‘immersion breaking’  and easier on the eyes too.
and just other quick things to keep in mind:
will the post be horizontal or vertical? if its vertical, you have to angle and move the camera around keeping in mind you’re going to crop it later. yes, the scenary might be nice if its horizontal, but a lil vertical photo is cute!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
best times for OUTDOOR lightning photos are 2pm-4pm. morning light is a bit too dark, 12 pm is the slightest too bright, but 2pm-4pm is just ENOUGH!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and thats all : ) i THINK i talked about most things screenies wise??? if you have questions, my askbox is always open : ) and remember these are just my opinions : )

The Tender Trap: The Origin Story
This is just pretty much a disclaimer for the disaster that’s coming.
I TALK A LOT OMG HOW DID YOU KNOW? Here's a TL;DR: -The Tender Trap is canon as shit, because I never intended to write a fic, and much less to publish it, but one thing lead to the other and I ended up kinda liking it. I love them so much. There's quite a lot added to it, but there's still a fair bit of the original thing in there, because again, that was the original goal. -However, if you think there's too much still there, let me know! I think I've modified it enough, but that's only my opinion. -If you catch technical mistakes, grammatical errors, weird vocabulary... let me know! English is my second language. -There's an after-villa sequel in the oven that has more angst (the game doesn't leave much space for that) and honestly is more fun. Or at least I've been having so much fun with it. I have to finish it first, though. I might hate it by the end, but we'll see. -Funny story: It was untitled for months. The day I randomly found a title while listening to Ella Fitzgerald, I kinda decided to 'fuck it, just upload it somewhere'. And so here we are. That was literally yesterday. -The first real chapter will likely be posted on AO3 on Thursday/Friday, depending on how much longer I keep messing with it :D
800 words of me rambling under the cut. How annoying is that.
I transcribed the whole goddamned game. In past tense instead of present, mind you. As one of the most popular memes in my country preaches: Why? There is no 'why'?
Well, there is. Just for clarification, that transcription is not what I will be posting. I'm not that dumb. No, I wanted to add nuances to the story without altering it, so I used what the game gives us as the skeleton. I wanted to see if I could make nonsense dialogue and the whole amnesia deal make sense by turning it into inside jokes, sarcasm, and anxiety. (Prosody is a wonderful thing). I tried my best to not contradict what has been explicitly said, regardless of how. much. I. wanted. to. change. it. That was the challenge, to reframe it so it made sense. Did it interfere with the 'creative process'? Nah, it was pretty fun, and I work well with a structure in place. The post-villa thing is way freer and oh god it's so over the place I have to put some order to that I don't even know where it's going but I found out I love writing domestic shit and I LoVe Lucas' mother.
This idea lead up to extending some scenes, adding others I felt were missing, composing internal monologues... And I ended up writing fiction again after like ten years. Which is not a "take it easy on me" card, by the way. Be ruthless, I can take it, mainly because I did this just for fun. I know I'm rusty, what's new? I know it mainly shows in the first chapters because the game forces a pace that's too fast and too slow at the same damn time and there's only so much my brain can do. I might rewrite them at some point, who knows. Also English is not my first language, so I can only hope there's something that sounds hilarious in there somewhere that you can point out so we can laugh about it. Let me know! I've loved this language since I was three, I want to use it properly. Also punctuation is sometimes different (commas and the necessity of explicit pronouns in English are a pain in the ass compared to Spanish) so you're welcome to correct that as well if you catch a mistake. So I don't intend to put myself at the same level as some of the fantastic writers in this fandom; you keep writing art, I'm just here for shits and giggles, and because this was insanely fun for me.
But going back. I started getting sidetracked, as I tend to do when I write, as you can see, so I had to get the scissors and cut those parts that weren't adding much to the main plot (telling Gary to apologize to Marisol is very nice but this chapter is already over 8000 words long, SIR) to make room for other parts that needed more depth, so amongst other things we have the emotional breakdown and apology we deserve after CA (or at least one that makes me feel bad, I don't know) and a lot of chats so these two actually get to, you know, know each other? Oh, and smut, ejem. Yeah. That.
In between I wrote half the after-villa sequel, canons for Liz, headcanons for Lucas, (head)canons for them together, pages and pages of questions and answers from both of them, fashion headcanons, families and exes, best friends; I put together pinterest folders with pictures of so (so) many people, clothes, apartments; I even wrote a musical episode where Liz has a karaoke battle with her ex in a jazz joint that's one of my favourite things because the songs are just *chef's kiss* I mean, Liz singing 'Cry me a river' is so cathartic... Anyway I started adding shit, mostly thoughts, to the game's dialogue, and it ended up in this abomination that never intended to be anything but fun. I'm not particularly proud of the first couple chapters because the cut/don't cut thing looking at the wordcount, trying to decide if I butchered the original dialogue, reduced it to a general paragraph, or pretend the scene never happened, all while having a chapter that was too short to split into two (or that would have one of them containing too little new stuff) but so long to be just one... was painful. I'm still dealing with that as I tweak the next chapters, but as soon as I have a somewhat definitive word/chapter count, I'll let you know. Just know that it's long, so do with that what you will.
SO, welcome. Take a seat, help yourself to a drink, and stay for as long as you like. When I got into this I went to the ball, so now I'm just dancing.

okay, despite it being 4/13 and me being obsessed with homestuck, i have… nothing planned. i have no art, no writing, absolutely nothing noteworthy to post. so i thought, “why not go through why i like homestuck?” it’s stupid, no one needs to hear about it, and it could be honest-to-god cringeworthy. but here i am, typing this draft in a google doc so why the fuck not?
homestuck is a comic, despite what my friend hayleigh thought. it was meant to be a game, but hussie took control of the narrative and that idea went out the window. there are a couple rpgmaker-esque bits later on, but that’s not the point right now, this is an overview of what homestuck is at face value. (at first) it centers around 4 kids — john egbert, rose lalonde, dave strider, and jade harley — who talk to each other on pesterchum, a kind of discord-like instant messenger. they’re all waiting to play beta release of a new game called sburb, with john being the last to obtain the game. john gets his grubby little mitts on the game, blah blah blah, trolls, blah blah, the scratch, blah blah blah, dancestors, whatever, whatever read homestuck.
why do i like this? this webcomic is 8000 pages of pure, unadulterated, barely decipherable random bullshit. yes. yes it is. to an outsider.
i read all 8123 pages of homestuck and i understood… not all of it, but most of it. there are some things i don’t understand but i understand everything important. i couldn’t even begin to explain homestuck to someone who has no idea what it is… wait no i actually did 2 paragraphs ago, nevermind. but i couldn’t get into the intricacies of the comic. there’s so much. crazy shit. like fuckin act 6. THE EXISTENCE OF ACT MOTHERFUCKING 6. I CANNOT EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE HOW I FEEL ABOUT ACT 6 AND ITS SHITTY STUPID LAYOUT. WHY THE FUCK ARE THERE SO MANY SUBACTS.
anyway. why do i like it? why the fuck did i read all of it and then go on to read the epilogues (technically half of one which i despised and then the entirety of the other) and the sequel? i’ve been told the latter two are shitty, but i love them anyway. well, i like the meat epilogue, candy fucking sucks. but still!
i. don’t know why i have so much faith in homestuck. i only started reading it around late february 2020, finishing it late march, so why am i attached? why do i love the characters and the world and why do i wanna see the sequel through to its end?
that’s the thing about homestuck. people rag on it all the time for being so weird and long and shitty and cringy, and it's all of those things. but it’s a masterpiece because of it. it’s just the right amount of shitty and cringy and weird. it gets you invested in all the characters, some of whom you love at first and end up hating with a burning passion, and vice versa.
hussie is definitely dragging it on with the sequel. my friend said, “just basically homestuck Was good. flawed but good. hussie rushed the ending and left it for a while but then changed his mind on being done with it and necromanced it into this confused mess that begun with the epilogues and continues thru the sequel and now seems to be clamoring for his old fanbase back despite everyone also being done with it and it just kinda makes me sad to watch.” and i can see that. i can definitely see that. we don’t have much of the sequel, but i can see how it’s kind of just being… mushed together with what the epilogues were supposed to tie up. the epilogues didn’t close out the story, they opened it right back up. homestuck ended. it had a nice little credits sequence, everyone looked happy, and then we were given the epilogues. and now, there’s a sequel. where no one looks happy. everything’s being fucked up again and it makes me wanna beg for everyone to have their happy ending back.
and there it is again. homestuck keeps dragging you back in! my friend finished reading it 4 years ago, and she’s still into it. it’s a never-ending ride with this fucking comic and i love it to death.
so i think that’s where i’m gonna end this. my head hurts and i just wanna eat some wendy’s and go to bed. so i hope you enjoyed reading. whatever the fuck this is. happy 4/13 and happy 11 years of homestuck!

My latest blog post from the cosy dragon: An Interview with Jimmy Brandmeier
An Interview with Jimmy Brandmeier, author of Be Who You Are, A Song For My Children
Jimmy Brandmeier is “the Dad” in a beautiful, wacky family of three daughters—Jamie (age 24), Jessie (age 23), and Josie (age 19)—Paula his wife of twenty-five years (ageless), two doves, a couple of goldfish, and a cat named Squeakers. Though their loving yellow lab, Satchmo, went to doggy heaven, his doggy hair will always be with them.
The couple moved their family from California to Wisconsin to raise their kids closer to family. They managed to be hands-on parents through the demands of two busy careers—Jimmy, a music industry veteran flying back and forth to California, and Paula, an airline pilot flying back and forth to Europe. Flexibility and priorities kept them from missing a beat in their children’s lives.
Apart from family, Brandmeier is a Telly Award winning composer/producer and a Summit award marketer. He’s worked directly with celebrity artists raging from Eric Clapton, Carole King, Avril Lavigne and Joss Stone, to Wynona Judd, Jason Mraz and Dave Mathews among others; written jingles for brands from Mazda to Mattel.
Brandmeier is a seasoned jazz flutist who has played everywhere from town halls to Carnegie Hall and a teacher, passionate about inspiring students to create a life of abundance and fulfillment. He has a deep-seated dedication to help people transcend inner and outer obstacles and understand the point of life, so they may live fulfilled and happy lives—which at its core, is the essence of his book Be Who You Are, A Song for My Children.
Why did you write Be Who You Are, A Song For My Children?
I didn’t intend to write a book. The book started out as a song, which took on a life of its own. Each line grew into a separate topic. The lyric spun like a thread that wove into the prose that unfolded into Be Who You Are: A Song for My Children. I was grabbed by the gut, by what turned out to be the tip of a message, which expanded as I wrote.
I wanted my three daughters to hold on to their authenticity—to the unrepeatable sparkle in their eyes—no matter what. I thought the right words could protect them; shelter them from the inner and outer storms of life. I didn’t want life suck the life out of them. And I wanted to leave them something they could lean on, long after I’m gone.
But it wasn’t until reaching the end the book that I fully understood what the book was about—what it really means to, Be Who You Are. That unexpected message has unfolded into an unexpected life mission, one that I believe will help people be happy no matter what happens and live their best lives.
So, you never expected your song to grow into a 368-page book?
Writing the book was a surprise. But the process of writing the book took me on an “unexpected” spiritual journey. Turns out the message I was grabbed by the gut to instill in my three daughters was the one I most needed to hear. Be Who You Are. And again, there are layers to being who you are, most people don’t think or care about.
So, what’s the overall message of Be Who You Are, A Song For My Children
The big picture message has three parts.
1-The Framework of Life: There are two roads, which layer and lead towards or away from who you are.
The inner road and sole purpose of life: Transcend the ego. Rise above fear (ego) into the essence of who you are. (Love!)
The outer road and secondary purpose of life: Make the most of yourself, your talents, your livelihood, and your life in this world. (Live!)
All you can imagine, do, be, achieve or experience is found on these two roads. The quality of your life depends on the relationship between them.
2-The Big Mistake: Believing the outer road is the only road that matters. Believing the outer road leads to happiness. Everybody is scrounging for happiness in all the wrong places. Happiness is not an external event. Your inside life “is” life.
3-The Point: The real journey in life is the voyage from fear to love. Casting off from the ego and returning to who you are—born again into the love of your infinite essence—is the point and purpose of life.
Does being who you are mean, doing what you love?
Doing what you love is a beautiful part of life’s big picture, and part of the overarching message of this book. Doing what you love can also be part of the curriculum in the course of authenticity. It can fade the façade of appearance, into an opening for your essence to shine through like the sun.
Lose your self (ego) in what you love, and you’ll find your Self (Essence) through what you love.
But doing what you love is only a portal to the point, which is perfect happiness—being who you are, inside and out. And finding happiness on the outer road only, no matter how much you love it, is an impossibility. As comedian Jim Carrey says . . . “I wish people could realize all their dreams of wealth and fame, so they could see it’s not where you’ll find your sense of completion.”
What is the meaning of your cover illustration—two separate puzzle pieces, that when aligned, transform into birds soaring free?
The two puzzle pieces represent the inner and outer roads moving into alignment. When the amazing outer road of our talents, dreams, passions, career, finances, relationships, achievements, accolades, adventures, and motivations merge with the spiritual purpose of the inner road—the ultimate and only point of life. When heart and heaven beat as one, as the song lyric says—you’ll be happy, no matter what happens. You’ll be fearless. You’ll be free. You’ll have reached, The Point.
What would you say is the best way to improve your writing—to master your craft?
I probably come from a different writing background than most of the authors reading this. I’m a musician. My first non-fiction book started out as a song.
As a composer, I’ve been immersed in writing songs, jingles, scores, music beds and anything else the client of the moment asked for. What comes first—words or music? Answer—the phone call. But certain truths for mastering the mechanics of writing—in order to free the soul of writing—are universal. The most powerful and least glamourous tool of all . . . butt in chair.
Habit is a hammer that builds virtuosity. Consistency activates a creative force in the universe sending us insights impossible to come up with sporadically, on our own. As Julia Cameron, author of The Artist Way, says, “were not thinking something up, were taking something down.” As I point out in my book, “world class dreams, require world class routines. Your goals and dreams must match your habits and routines.” What’s the difference between an artist and an amateur? According to Malcom Gladwell author of Outliers, about 8000 hours. Amateurs put in 2000 hours, by age 20, artists who’ve mastered their craft, put in 10,000. Talent is not enough.
I’ve noticed that many aspiring music students do not listen to music. I’ve met aspiring authors who do not read. If you want to be a better writer, be a better reader . . .
Read! Read! Read!
Creativity—at least the non-contrived, unexpected, happy accidents kind of creativity—originates almost entirely in the sub-conscious. You can program the sub-conscious with cable news and video games, or inspiring books, that shake the soul and expand your consciousness. Either way it’s going to come out in your writing.
I have heard of writers that could only write in one place – then that cafe closed down and they could no longer write! Where do you find yourself writing most often, and on what medium (pen/paper or digital)?
I write most often in a quiet place, in my home. The challenge is . . . it’s not always quiet. In a crazy household filled with three wonderful daughters, (for whom I wrote the book), a fantastic wife, dogs, cats and pet rats, its necessary to escape to a coffee shop to get in the zone.
But for me it’s more about “time” than “place.” I’m most creative and tapped in to the muse, early in the morning. I set up my “writing chair” the night before—wake up at 3AM, meditate, pray, visualize and sip that first magical cup of coffee. After saying hello to my writing partner—a great big Evergreen tree outside my window—I get to work. (I know. Weird! Kind of like Tom Hanks talking to his soccer ball in the movie The Cast Away), But hey, me and the tree have been through a lot of writing together. 
It is easier to slip behind the veil of ego, and the white noise of world early in the morning. The wee small hours of the morning opens the channel, for insights to flow through me, (not from me) with ease. I call it a dialog with divinity. Call it the force, the source, the muse, the universe; It doesn’t matter—it’s all the same reservoir of creation to me.
On average, I write for 90 minutes and take a break, then write another 60 to 90 minutes. I walk away after that, and deliberately quit thinking about writing. It’s part of the creative process, as described by Graham Wallace in the book, The Art of Thought. Know it or not, whether you’re writing a book or baking cupcakes, the same 4 stages are happening.
1- Preparation. Questions, what does the story want, what do I want to say etc. 2- Incubation: Quit writing let the mind/universe process questions and problems. 3- Illumination: Aha! The answer/idea/insight comes when you least expect it. 4- Verification: Plug the answer and verify how it works. Adjust accordingly.
When I’m done with my morning, preparation stage, I work out, wake the kids, do errands in order to let the writing, incubate. Because the initial creative heavy lifting is over in the morning, total quiet isn’t necessary. I can write at a coffee shop for the next session. When I come back for round two, everything flows much easier.
And one more writing, so called, place: I love to walk my writing. Walking frees the mind. I’ll go on long 2-3-hour walks and record insights, ideas and paragraphs on my iPhone. I’ve written full songs without touching an instrument. When I get back to my desk and enter the verification stage, the ideas I’ve walked out of me generally stand up. Per the last part of this question. I write on a Mac Book Pro and always keep my iPhone handy.
Before going on to hire an editor, most authors use beta-readers. How do you recruit your beta-readers, and choose an editor?
My wife belongs to a local book club that meets once a month. They were nice enough to beta-read my book. We had a party at our house for the book club. It not only helped the writing process, it was a lot of fun.
