The Chronicle - Entry One: The Reaper
A nebula. A dense, beautiful, giant formation of gas in space. Usually. Not always. Some nebulae cannot be seen by the naked human eye, no. Hanging there. Weightless, maybe, but oh, so massive. Yes, human machines have, for a while now, been capable of seeing these otherwise hidden beasts. Fields of gas, light-years across. But this story isn't about human machines. Humans don't yet have words for some of the things you will read about here. They didn't in Sol's gravity well, and they don't in Toliman's. Thus, some license has been taken. Some names have been chosen for things that don't have names.
This story is about an entity we will refer to as The Reaper. The Reaper could be described as a nebula, though the taxonomies of human astronomers have not reached it. No observatory or telescope has ever seen it, the last opportunity was long before humans had the necessary technology. The vast majority of human astrophysicists would not even consider such an entity to be theoretically possible. And who could blame them? They're understanding is inevitably missing some important fundamental details. And yet, The Reaper exists.
A nebula, of a different sort of gas, a fundamentally different form of matter. Not quite as large as a 'typical' nebula, mind you. If it were, it might be easier to detect. A nebula filled with the movements of energy. But that energy doesn't move in a known spectrum. It isn't kinetic energy, not electrical current, not any kind of electromagnetic radiation. We will call it Umbral Energy, for while that does not fully describe it, it does so accurately. Umbral currents move in patterns similar to electrical currents in the neural network of a human mind. But no, remember, nebulae are unfathomably larger.
So, a nebula. Filled with these complex movements of energy. Millions of times larger than a human brain, and at least as dense. A thinking nebula. Any attempt to describe the experience of consciousness at this scale would be imperfect - Not fruitless, but imperfect. We shall save that for the humans to discover themselves. But I would be remiss not to note that although humans pride themselves on adaptability, it pales in comparison to the adaptability of The Reaper. The pathways through which its energy flows are always shifting, reshaping. A thinking, ever-adapting nebula.
But what does it think about? Well, there's capacity for a lot. It ponders the universe. It ponders the past. It ponders the future. It ponders the idea of time. It ponders the other life in the universe. What does it feel? Awe, Hope, Rage? Oh yes, and more. Ideas and feelings that a human couldn't name. New flavours of despair and joy and frustration.
But the less theoretically focused among you might wonder what all of that means practically. You may wonder what The Reaper's presence means for humanity. It wouldn't be selfish to. No, quite rational. Let's just say… be glad of the 1.5 kilograms of grey matter you do have. And the many other humans, living and yet to live, that might also work with that good, old-fashioned survival instinct. Earth isn't alone.
You weren't even first.

5. John & Alan - Scenes from Gordon’s Bedside
Tumblr, you get the full clip under the “read more” this time because I just had to include the phone conversation. I hope you enjoy science!bros Gordon and John, plus some Alan in there. Links are also below for both Ao3 and FF if you like.
John had been in G-force training, clinging to consciousness by repeating his latest round of Russian vocabulary words, when his younger brother slammed into the ocean at 400 knots. He had just been talking to him that morning, so it feels surreal that in the short amount of time it took for John to finish his bagel, brush his teeth, and head to the training compound, Gordon had boarded the hydrofoil that may have taken his life. From experience, Johns knows just how life can change in an instant, even if an instant is not a true measurement of time. The fact that they’d been through this before in their family does not make today’s events any less surreal or any less terrifying.
“Hey Alan?” His brother has been quiet since he picked him from school. It’s understandable considering the circumstances, and normally John would appreciate the silence. But today, the worry has been exhausting, and he’s been piloting for a long time.
“Hmmm?”
“Did you know that time moves faster for your face than it does your feet?”
He glances over at the small figure for a reaction. Alan shrugs, which is unfortunate because that’s a really good factoid.
Gordon’s message this morning was a picture of a clam, followed by the words Abra Cadabra. Open. Accurate for a clam, but also who said scientists didn’t have a sense of humor? He wondered when and where it was discovered and had started to open a search on his phone, when Gordon’s second message came through.
If you look it up though it was reclassified as theora in the mid 1990s. Of course he’d known John would go looking. Neither taxonomy nor malacology were their specialties, but where Gordon was full of unbridled curiosity for any and all interests in orbit with his love for the sea, John yearned to know, understand, research, catalogue, as if it were a basic need like food. His research this morning started with theora mesopotamica and ended with clam life spans.
“Giant Clams can live up to 150 years old,” he shares with the small blond slouching in the co-pilot’s seat.
“Mmm...”

To let Gordon know he appreciated the hello that morning, John had sent him back a picture of a nebula shaped like one of the creatures he loves so much. Just as Gordon knows John, John knows Gordon, so when his little brother sent back the heart eyes emoji, John knew that Gordon really meant it – he probably expanded the picture, saved it, and showed it to his shipmates that morning with a “LOOK at this AMAZING thing!”
It might have been the last picture many of those men and women ever saw.
Gordon definitely would have shown the picture to his friend, Dan. Gordon always said John would love Dan because he was into naval navigation and always had his head in the stars. His chest aches for the kid he never knew, but who knew him through his messages to Gordo. The anguish he feels for his brother’s grief is overwhelming, because Daniel Cabrera was among the first names released to the public.
“Hey John?” Alan asks. “Did you know the micro quasar’s jets in W50 make it look like scarring, and that’s part of why it’s called the Manatee Nebula. Manatees are on the endangered species list, and they often are pretty scarred from being injured by boat propellers.”
The yeah is heavy in his throat, and he chokes. He does know. It’s the message that he shared with Gordon that morning. The message that Gordon must’ve shared with their youngest brother.
“It was the last thing he sent me.”
“It’s the last thing I sent him,” he reveals, and it hits him that he and Alan have been thinking of the same picture this whole time.
Alan is ever so young at seven years John’s junior and barely a teenager. There’s a lot of Alan’s childhood that John had missed by pursuing his university has young as he did. The thought makes him sad. There’s a lot of Gordon’s that he missed too.
“Since when are you into quasars?”
“Since ever. Since Star Trek.” Alan quips. That’s a language John understands. He may or may not be fluent in Klingon, which in hindsight he really should not have learned before Russian. You need Russian to be assigned to the ISS. Alan continues, “I like space, though. I want to be an astronaut like Dad. Like you.”
That’s new.
“An astronaut? You wanted to be a racecar driver a month ago.” And before that he wanted to be a pilot like Scott.
“Still do, but rockets go faster.”
They do indeed.
John’s smiles at him weakly, quelling the pridejoyexcitement he feels in having his baby brother share a similar love. It feels wrong to smile while Gordon is dying.
End note: Thanks for reading, maybe one day I can get to >1000 words. - FF, Ao3

SR+ A Way Back: Part 2 Interests
Key: 🦌: Lu Chen/Alkaid 🖌️: MC
One sentence “I want to” almost came out from my mouth. I must compose myself and pretend to calmly ask. (I composed myself)
🖌️: Then, how do you intend to write me? 🦌: I wanted to ask for your opinion. I contemplated, my fingers unconsciously played with his lapel pin. 🖌️: For example, “My appreciation for MC's great contribution in frequently coming and disturbing the production of this thesis”? 🦌: What disturbance are you referring to? MC hugged Alkaid from the back in the scene before, so basically Alkaid tugged her hands up, prompting MC to bend down and fully lean herself on his back. He turned his head, his cheeks lightly rubs me. In his pupils is like there were a luster of gems letting out a bluish green light in the bottom of the ocean and the reflection of the stars rocking. What find of disturbance can only be this nebula of entangled plain silk, suffused with the bluish green ocean waves? I can’t help myself to move closer.
🦌: Your name is only used in the thesis from the last time your helped with the colouring the picture. Lu Chen blinked, facing the monitor with a list of collaborators’ names and their provided help. 🦌: You see, will this disclaimer be alright? His expression was sincere and no ulterior motives although he didn’t pressure anyone, I can’t help but ponder over how this person… Confronting whatever challenge all with ease and skill… How is it still making my heart beat so much for him?
=flashback=
To bring up his interest in astronomy, I could not help to think of the conversation in YueCheng planetarium — 🖌️: Lu Chen, was this the earliest moment your felt a strong interest in astronomy? 🦌: Hmm? 🖌️: The day you came to YueCheng high school for the public astronomy class exhibit, is that day the start of your interest in astronomy? 🦌: Its earlier. 🖌️: Oh? 🦌: Maybe 7 or 8 years old… oh, that's not right, when I was 5 or 6 years old. Lu Chen paused for a moment, it appeared he recalled memories of when he was young. I can’t help but to blink. 🖌️: 20 and 22 years old is somewhat young; but 7 or 8 and 5 or 6 years old is somewhat really young… (The difference of 20 and 22 y/o is a lot lesser than 7 to 8 or 5 to 6 y/o...) 🦌: I don’t remember clearly. Because of Lu Chen’s memory strength, him saying he doesn’t remember clearly I can’t believe him. But he didn’t give me a chance to question him and very quickly the conversation continues. 🦌: In short, it is when I was really young. That time my mother’s work was really busy, sometimes she brought me to her colleague, or let my uncle take care of me. 🖌️: Uncle? 🦌: Mm, he is a taxonomy scholar and he would bring me to walk though the desert, the stary sky looked brighter there than the city… 🦌: Later when I got older, I planned to develop in the field of astronomy, and heard many opinions about it. 🦌: Some said, regardless of whether I do astronomy or explore the world, are both basic scientific research conducted by huge countries with the capability to do so, and many things are not so easy to use in reality. 🦌: Some also said, this is a rigorous and uninteresting subject, it is more of data, code and physics… 🦌: These statements I think are all right. When I mentioned to study astronomy, Lu Chen’s pupils brighten up. 🦌: But I remembered that moment the first time I was convinced. 🦌: Everywhere around me was empty and quiet, all of it was boundless not reaching the edge of the sand, the celestial stars are many and beautiful. Uncle pointed at the sky and taught me how recognise the directions. 🦌: He said, the stars will point you the way home.

“The Nebulas Rank Yellow Paper” is now public, providing the blockchain world with a more complete value measurement system
As research that explores the blockchain value spectrum, the Yellow Paper has been significantly updated to expand upon the concept of “Nebulas Rank,” first proposed in the “Nebulas White Paper” published in Q3 2017. The Yellow Paper is a milestone, following in the footsteps the release of the Nebulas Mainnet [1.0 Eagle Nebula], and represents Nebulas’ ambition to be a leading global blockchain for value discovery among blockchain users, smart contracts, and decentralized applications [dapps].
What is the ‘Yellow Paper’ about?
The Yellow paper of Nebulas is an insight of the Nebulas Researches. It is explanatory of what Nebulas Rank offers, implements and possesses. Nebulas in their Yellow Paper have presented a detailed working of their algorithms along with the explanation of its various calculations and methodologies on graphs.
The Theory of Nebulas Rank divides Nebulas Rank into Core Nebulas Rank and Extended Nebulas Rank. Core Nebulas Rank defines the algorithm to calculate an account’s contribution to the whole blockchain system in a particular timeline. Extended Nebulas Rank is for different applications and scenarios, it is based on Core Nebulas Rank.
The Yellow Paper provides an insight into the working, processing and engaging of the contents of ‘Nebulas Rank’.
Frontier exploration
With the rapid growth of various Dapps in the blockchain, users lack efficient search methods for blockchain applications and smart contracts. At the same time, in the face of the high complexity of the economies built on blockchain technology, the PageRank algorithm in the Internet age cannot solve the problem of the lack of information and value evaluation criteria in the blockchain world.
In response to the pain points in the industry, Nebulas independently proposed the concept of “Nebulas Rank” in September 2017 as a solution for value measurement and discovery on blockchains.
On the 11th of June, it took the lead in opening the “Nebulas Rank” key code, which is the core component of the Nebulas development team, as the first implementation of the technology of the blockchain value scale in China.
As a measure of the value of blockchain, “The Nebulas Rank Yellow Paper” enhances and expands the set of algorithmic systems constructed by Nebulas Rank. First of all, to address the problem that the characteristics of the blockchain economy system still cannot be accurately reflected, Nebulas Rank has been developed to measure the contribution of account addresses to a blockchain economy of circulating cryptocurrency.
The model proposed by Nebulas Rank takes account of the digital currency in circulation, the output of the economy, and the degree of account contribution. Secondly, the Wilbur function designed by Nebulas Rank is able to resist manipulation to guarantee the fairness of standards on which the blockchain incentive mechanism is based.
Finally, to meet the need for diversity, this Yellow Paper describes a dual taxonomy of Nebulas Rank: Core Nebulas Rank and Extended Nebulas Rank. The former refers to two factors: “the median value of assets of a factor account over a certain period of time” and “measures of the degree of access of the account within a certain period of time.”
The latter gives different calculation methods for the value scales of various applications in the blockchain ecosystem. These two categories of Nebulas Rank better meet the actual needs of different application scenarios.
The “Nebulas Rank Yellow Paper” is the first important research result since the founding of the Nebulas Foundation, further improving the core algorithm of the Nebulas blockchain. The Nebulas Foundation brings together top research talent in the blockchain industry, fully embodying the importance of Nebulas innovation and research.
Xuepeng Fan Head of Nebulas Research, said that Nebulas Rank represents the further improvement of the original value chain measurement system of the Nebulas. The new iteration of Nebulas Rank will be used for cross-chain data exchange, digital asset transfer, to effectively measure the individual or organization’s contribution to the community’s growth and other aspects.

Future of Smart Wind Market - Global Industry Insights, Trends, Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis, 2017–2025
Requirement to counter the pollution, reduce consumption of conventional fuels and increase the efficiency of renewable power sources such as hydro, solar, wind, geothermal, and biofuels is expected to be the major trend that will drive the utilization of smart means for energy generation. Smart wind market refers to utilization of computing models, better turbines positioning, improved efficiency of rotor blades to the mechanical parts inside the nacelle, connected sensors, and software to optimize the efficiency of the operations under broader range of conditions.
Power generation capacity of more kWhs per hour by lower capacity models, will garner increased applications
Incorporating intelligent algorithms and sensors in these next generation models has led to increased reliability and ability to function in relatively lower air current speeds. Owing to increased reliability, overall operation costs are significantly reduced and allows the turbine to capture more energy with less downtimes. Moreover, next generation low capacity models are featured with the ability to produce more kWhs over its long run. For instance, in February 2013, GE introduced 2.5-120 turbine, which had relatively lower power output than its dominant 2.85 megawatt turbine. However, owing to the integration of arrays of sensors in conjunction with algorithms it was featured with the capacity of producing around 15% more kilowatt hours. These factors are expected to prominently drive the industry growth through the forecast period.

Smart Wind Market Taxonomy
On the basis of components, the global smart wind market is classified into:
On-grid
Off-grid
On the basis of turbine axis, the global smart wind market is classified into:
Vertical axis wind turbines
Horizontal axis wind turbines
Declining costs per kWh owing to bigger turbines and economies of scale is expected to attract large number of users
According to American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), unsubsidized costs of this energy generation methodology in the country ranged from US$ 32 to 62 per MWh in 2016, which was relatively lower to the gas combined cycle that ranged from US$ 48 to 78 per MWh, which was the cheapest conventional energy source. Moreover, pricing trend has witnessed considerable decline over the past few years. According to Coherent Market Insights, owing to these advantageous factors, the number of deployment of wind farms is expected to increase over 1.5X in 2016, which will provide substantial opportunities for the smart wind market over the next few years.
Heavy upfront investments and threats to the wildlife are expected to be the major factors that will continue to hamper the industry growth
The energy output of these sources fluctuates around the clock, dependent on the winds, owing to which these cannot be directly use to supply base loads. Moreover, requirement of additional expenditure for enabling the energy storage such as pumped hydro or batteries will present considerable growth challenge to the overall industry growth. Moreover, bird mortality rates owing to collisions to these turbines has witnessed significant increase over the past few years. According to American Bird Conservancy, annual estimated loss of birds in 2012 was around 573,000. If the dependence on these sources were to increase up to 35%, the bird fatality rates could reach as high 5 million annually. Thus, threats to the wildlife is expected to remain a major concern.
U.S. was the leading producer of the energy through these sources, is anticipated to continue its dominance in the smart wind market. According to Wind Vision Report in 2015, by Department Of Energy in the U.S., projections of 20% of the required energy generation through its wind sources by 2030, and is expected to surge to 35% by 2050. In conjunction with U.S. as the most lucrative region, increased demands in Europe and Asia Pacific will also provide solid growth platform to the smart wind market. Industry participants include Xcel Energy, GE Power, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Omniflow, GaN Systems, Nextek Power Systems, and Nebula Energy.

Hyperallergic: Imagine If a Victorian Scientist Studied the Plastic Debris in Our Oceans
Mandy Barker, “Centroplages Typicus. Specimen collected from Inch Beach, Ireland (Plastic bottle necks & pieces)” (courtesy the artist)
Indecipherable forms float in the inky darkness of Mandy Barker’s photographs in Beyond Drifting: Imperfectly Known Animals. While the title of the monograph, recently published by Overlapse, suggests some organic presence, the images are of plastic trash that Barker collected on the shores of Ireland. The book is designed like a 19th-century science album, with 26 “specimens,” such as doll arms and shoe soles, obscured through the use of long exposures, faulty cameras, and expired film. They act as a sample of the millions of tons of plastic debris in the oceans and are meant to draw attention specifically to the microscopic bits of pollution being consumed by plankton.
Cover of Beyond Drifting: Imperfectly Known Animals (courtesy Overlapse)
“The plankton samples in this series represent imperfection in terms of man-made microplastics being able to infiltrate a natural organism,” Barker writes in Beyond Drifting. “Microplastic particles are not normally visible to the human eye, and their contamination of the food chain reflects an unnatural threat to the biodiversity of our planet.”
Beyond Drifting follows the British artist’s previous photographic work on ocean pollution, including SHOAL, which concentrates on marine plastic collected in 2012 in the North Pacific Ocean’s tsunami debris field, and SOUP, a response to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch that features salvaged beach plastic photographed as if it were adrift at sea. Barker developed the Beyond Drifting series during a 2014 residency at the Sirius Arts Centre in Cork, Ireland. She was inspired by the 1800s research and plankton microscope slides of naturalist John Vaughan Thompson. He invented a net to collect plankton — which he called “imperfectly known animals” — from the Cove of Cork, where Barker found her marine plastic specimens two centuries later. She photographed them over a period of two years, presenting them as if under a Victorian-era microscope. “These flaws in equipment, technique, and presentation utilised in the creative process mirror the compounding defects in nature, while simultaneously reflecting on pioneering discoveries made in our natural world before plastic was introduced,” Barker writes.
Pages from Beyond Drifting: Imperfectly Known Animals (courtesy Overlapse)
Some of Thompson’s drawings can be detected on the dust jacket and pages of Beyond Drifting, which also has a faded blue binding, bent library card inside, red ribbon bookmark, and printed mold and marks that cleverly suggest a well-used tome. A section sealed with a “CONCEALED HAZARD” sticker can be broken open, revealing an index of the very contemporary trash captured in the book. Heplandista Ica is an electric plug and wire; Amphilima Distinctae, a smashed coat hanger. Red letters in their Latin-inspired labels indicate that each hides the word “plastic” in its name. What appears as the blurred ripple of drifting plankton is actually the plastic chain of a rosary, and it’s a partially burnt plastic flower, not some mysterious organism, that buoyantly bobs in another photograph.
Beyond Drifting could be viewed as a playful project, with Barker using Victorian taxonomy to impart an irreverent sense of awe to discarded stroller wheels and plastic bottles, yet the issue it presents is serious. The beguiling details of these small specimens, from wispy brush bristles to a ghostly six-pack yoke, represent a global concern for the future of life in our oceans.

The former refers to two factors: “the median value of assets of a factor account over a certain period of time” and “measures of the degree of access of the account within a certain period of time.” The latter gives different calculation methods for the value scales of various applications in the blockchain ecosystem.
Xuepeng Fan Head of Nebulas Research, said that Nebulas Rank represents further improvement of the original value chain measurement system of the Nebulas. The new iteration of Nebulas Rank will be used for cross-chain data exchange, digital asset transfer, to effectively measure the individual or organization’s contribution to the community’s growth and other aspects.

“The Nebulas Rank Yellow Paper” is Now Public, Providing the Blockchain World with a More Complete Value Measurement System
The Yellow Paper is a milestone, following in the footsteps the release of the Nebulas Mainnet (1.0 Eagle Nebula), and represents Nebulas’ ambition to be a leading global blockchain for value discovery among blockchain users, smart contracts, and decentralized applications (dapps).
Frontier exploration
With the rapid growth of various dapps in blockchain, users lack efficient search methods for blockchain applications and smart contracts. At the same time, in the face of the high complexity of the economies built on blockchain technology, the PageRank algorithm in the Internet age cannot solve the problem of the lack of information and value evaluation criteria in the blockchain world.

Smart Wind Market - Global Industry Insights, Trends, Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis, 2017–2025
