Just a happy little minifigure with a warehouse full of food. Why throw food away when you can redistribute it?
We're proud to be supporting The Real Junk Food Project Sheffield in their mission to build #FoodWorksNotFoodWaste - this is going to be Sheffield's first sustainable food hub making a real dent in food waste, as well as feeding people and sharing skills.
They were on the BBC yesterday - exciting! Here is a link to the programme on iPlayer. They are featured at around 7 mins 30 seconds into this:

Also, if you’re interested in reducing food waste, you might want to check out their crowdfunder. It's packed with loads of fantastic rewards for you as well: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/food-works-for-sheffield

“Growing up in Leeds hadn’t been good for me, I had bad memories and I wanted to escape; Australia was an easy way out. I was out there for a while until I needed to get my visa extended so I started working on farms. I’d been around food quite a bit before that point, I’d been a chef for over nine years, and had encountered food waste but never to that scale. The supermarkets would cancel orders at the last minute and the farmers would just plough all this really great produce back into the ground, or feed it to their animals; it was genuinely shocking. I started to realise that the biggest problem wasn’t that there isn’t enough food, but that it’s in the wrong place.
When I was a head chef in a Melbourne restaurant, I had come across a restaurant called ‘Lentil as Anything’, which pioneered the pay-as-you feel concept. So when I came back to the UK, I decided to start a cafe along the same lines but expand the idea. It’s simple: we intercept/collect (safe to consume) food destined for landfill from restaurants, markets, shops, then cook it and serve it in a cafe. People donate what they can, what they have, what they feel. I really want to change perceptions and attitudes towards food waste. We’ve got to make people realise how ridiculous it is to throw perfectly good food away because of a date on a packet. There’s a lot of confusion and manipulation in the food industry, especially around expiration dates. Only one of them is law, the rest of them are created by manufacturers to ensure consumers end up buying more of their product.
I want our project to solve the problem. I don’t want to be doing this in twenty years time, I don’t want the problem to exist. I want to close down our cafes because there’s no waste for us to intercept. I want to close them down because people don’t need feeding in this way.
When I first formed the idea for The Real Junk Food Project, I took it to a guy who I was working with on the farm in Australia and I still remember what he said to me: ‘You can’t change the world. Nobody can, just because they decide to. If you set out with that idea you’ll fail. It’s too big, it won’t work. Make a change in your home town first and watch it spread.’"

British Leftover Cafe Goes Global
How 'pay-as-you-feel' cafes are fighting waste by diverting food destined for the landfill.
“Up to 25% of food is wasted before it even gets to the consumer.”
I love this idea of talented chefs ‘intercepting’ food before it hits the bin. Really keen to visit some of these Skipchens and learn lots from them.

All Hallows Church in Leeds has been running a Real Junk Food Café as part of their community outreach. The idea behind it is simple: food that would otherwise go to waste is instead used to cook delicious meals for local people who are struggling to make ends meet. The café operates on a Pay-As-You-Feel basis, which makes the food affordable. People can also cover costs by contributing their skills through volunteering in the café and elsewhere, transforming the process of eating from a financial transaction to a vibrant demonstration of community. The church opened up the café to local Syrian refugees, forming what they call the ‘Syrian Kitchen’. Every Thursday, local Syrians from the nearby mosque spend the day at the church, cooking a range of delicious and nutritious meals and sharing Syrian life and culture with others in the café and kitchen. After fleeing their homeland, and being witnesses to unspeakable human tragedy and suffering, many of the refugees are now trying to make a new life in the UK. Being part of the café has opened up doors to the community, creating cohesion and understanding between people of different faiths and backgrounds. #worldrefugeeday #refugees #syria #syrian #syriankitchen #allhallowschurch #leeds #uk #trjfp #therealjunkfoodproject #payf #payasyoufeel #documentaryphotography #photojournalism #portrait #portraitphotography
