'I flirted with the idea that instead of being trans that I was just a cross-dresser (a quirk, I thought, that could be quietly folded into an otherwise average life) and that my dysphoria was sexual in nature, and sexual only. And if my feelings were only sexual, then, I wondered, perhaps I wasn’t actually trans.
I had read about a book called The Man Who Would Be Queen, by a Northwestern University professor who believed that transwomen who were attracted to women were really confused fetishists, they wanted to be women to satisfy an autogynephilia. And though I first read about this book in the context of its debunkment and disparagement, I thought about the electricity of slipping on those tights, zipping up those boots, and a stream of guilt followed. Maybe this professor was right, and maybe I was only a fetishist. Not trans, just a misguided boy.
About a year later, on the Internet, I come across a transwoman who added a unique message to the crowd refuting this professor. Oh, I wish I remember who this woman was, and I wish even more that I could do better than paraphrase her, but I remember her saying something like this: “Well, of course I feel sexy putting on women’s clothing and having a woman’s body. If you feel comfortable in your body for the first time, won’t that probably mean it’ll be the first time you feel comfortable, too, with delighting in your body as a sexual thing?”'
-Casey Plett, Consciousness
#this quote always moves me almost to tears when i remember it#i'm not a trans woman and i don't share the author's specific experiences with transition#but it really moves me that she frame transition as joyfully giving yourself permission to approach your body#not as something that has to be disciplined and deprived and made small in all these various ways#but as a means for experiencing pleasure and joy and delight and for insisting that our feelings and desires are worth#valuing and exploring and treasuring#i always used to think of prioritizing those things for myself as selfish and irresponsible#but who does it harm to want to experience pleasure in your own body?#it's such a beautifully simple and powerful switch to have flip in your head#and equally why are we forced to deny our own pleasure in transition and anything else related to our bodies in the name of moral rectitude#this is why i get so confused and pissed off when other trans people are fatphobic for example#like why are you so invested in politics of shame and disgust that never had any purpose other than#violently disciplining people as if they've violated moral codes by existing in a body#to say nothing of white people being racist in gay and trans communities#like again this system of violence is foundational to homophobia and transphobia#so why are you acting like it has nothing to do with you#even if you are unmoved by the urgency of other people's suffering which btw you should be moved by#what do you hope to gain by acting a collaborator and handmaiden to those systems#Casey Plett#she really is one of my favorite authors i wish more non-canadians read her#this quote is from a series of columns she did ont transition and every single one is a banger#i love when she talks about the people-pleasing elements of dysphoria and transition denial#she's so sharp about noting how many of us deny our own dysphoria on the grounds that others like and validate our bodies#that's how i always felt during my cis conventionally feminine era#it pleased other people so much and also that reception felt so hollow and joyless to me because i hated it#i get less of that positive feedback but that feels so unimportant next to the joy and pleasure i get to experience#said with the understanding that i'm very privileged in being able to prioritize those things without fear. but it was a switch flip#personal nonsense

#thinking of dinosaurs and troodontids were my favorite dinosaurs as a child#when younger i had a real full troodontid tooth fossil that meant a lot to me#for a time we lived within a few kilometers of hadrosaur sites and troodontid sites#while wider general area had many sites of recovery for the big celebrities like tyrannosaur and multiple dromaeosaurs#at that time troodontids were kinda infamous for i think the depiction in some childrens field guides and dino books#which depicted like a fantasy speculative humanoid troodontid based on 1980s model at Canadian Museum of Nature in ottawa#anyway would visit a small local paleo center a lot and woman in her 70s or 80s ran the counter of their center and rock shop#one day she asked me what my fave dino was and i said troodon so she pulled out the tooth and just gifted it to me#in little black case size of ring box with padding and transparent plastic viewing cover kinda like laminate for displaying a trading card#tooth got stolen from out my vehicle while giving some people a ride while at university before i got too poor for tuition#later during first year of pandemic owner of my storage unit died and new property owners threw away everything i ever owned#i was homeless anyway lost job due to early pandemic closures and had to allocate any money to insulin and other prescrip meds#but wouldve found a way to save my things if the new owners had contacted me#they threw out photoalbums y backpacking gear y books y musical instruments y clothes y artwork y camera y all family keepsakes#and all childhood treasures like souvenirs and gifts and school awards and writing portfolios and all the little memories#which i was always sentimental about as child#from earliest age my room looked like a natural history museum with plants and maps and library of field guides#and rocks and field trip keepsakes and all kinds of little animal figurines and mother had painted room in forest greens and browns#to feel like a forest and among the succulent plants and a globe sat the troodon tooth#parents passed when i was a child#never near any family and were always moving never got to settle into proper stable place then father passed after long sad illness#and mother put in so much effort but she passed few years later and i could not take care of myself or my remaining material possessions#and so im still quite hurt having nothing whatsoever remaining of my childhood or school friends or mother or life generally#and when trying to process grief my thoughts often come back to the troodontid tooth as a focal point a distillation of what was lost#even when young i knew it was advised not to become too connected to material physical possessions#but still there are some small little trinkets in our lives that seem to hold so much meaning and i tortured myself for losing that tooth#thinking about troodon reminds me of childhood

"Detention gets out at 4:15. Guess where I am instead of there?"
Well, I WAS going to post this for Day 12 of Cringetober (because the prompt was 'Niche Interest'), but I somehow forgot, even though I literally drew this back in September. Anyways,
Detentionaire is the show ever. I'm obsessed. Everyone should go watch Detentionaire RIGHT NOW. I drew this back when I hadn't even finished Season 1, so you can tell I saw a bunch of out-of-context spoilers and rolled with them haha. The triangle's because of the pyramid in the basement (which I saw a screenie of and promptly lost my shit over), and the tail is because tatzelwurms are typically reptilians with feline heads. Cartoon win, this character is... a cat-lizard! Wahoo! I don't care that it isn't canon, I'm just happy I got to draw my guy.

Arber Xhekaj's favourite things

ONE RESTAURANT PEOPLE MUST TRY
Chef's in Buffalo. My junior coach Jay McKee played in Buffalo, so that was his favourite spot. They're famous for their meat sauce, and their chicken parm is my favourite thing on the menu. They give you really good portions. He took our junior team there one time, and I stop by every time I'm in Buffalo ever since. I took the boys there too, and they seemed to really like it. It's a good spot.
ONE ACCOUNT PEOPLE MUST FOLLOW
This guy on TikTok, Bayashi. He has videos of him cooking and putting together food, and it's probably the most satisfying thing. He's good. I get hungry when I watch him.
ONE MOVIE PEOPLE MUST WATCH
Avatar. I like everything about it. It's just cool. I've only watched it, like, three times -- I don't like to watch my top movies a lot because I like them so much. I don't want to ruin them for myself. I haven't seen the second one, but I want to. No one wants to see it with me just because it's so long.
ONE FUN FACT PEOPLE MUST KNOW ABOUT YOU
I like cars. I like working on cars and trying to do things like build them myself. I can do suspensions, spark plugs, intakes, wheels, tires, brakes. I can do most of that stuff. I can't really take engines and all, but...
[What is the most satisfying project you've worked on?] Honestly, none of it is satisfying because you think it's only going to take 30 minutes and then one bolt is rusted in, or something doesn't go right, and you break something. Then you're there for four to five hours and you're wondering why you like cars or why you're working on them.
[Do you work on cars in a shop?] Yeah. I'll go out, work out, skate, and then go to my shop and just mess around in there. My four buddies and I share a rented-out shop in Hamilton. We've got our cars in there and chill, hang out and mess around.
Tumblr media
[Has anyone hired you to work on their car?] I practice on my own cars, but I've done some stuff on my siblings' cars. I've done a lot of stuff for my brother's car, whenever he needs me to, and my sister's car too. I'll change their tires if they need it.
ONE CAR PEOPLE SHOULD DRIVE
An Audi RS4 (B7). I'm looking to buy one. I went to go see one, but they're kind of expensive, and I've never spent a lot of money on cars. I looked at one and test drove it. Maybe I'll buy it soon.
ONE MUSIC ALBUM PEOPLE SHOULD ADD TO THEIR COLLECTION
Dangerous by Morgan Wallen. I like all the songs. I know every word to all of them. They're all so good. I like Quittin' Time and Wasted On You. I had tickets to his show once, but I was playing in the Memorial Cup. I have some buddies coming to Montreal, and I'm going to see him here, or I might just buy some tickets in London.
There's also Beerbongs & Bentleys by Post Malone. My favourite song would probably be Better Now.
ONE BRAND/TYPE OF CLOTHING PEOPLE MUST TRY
I have a lot of lululemon, their stuff is really good. It's comfy, and it never shrinks in the dryer or anything. It lasts forever if you take good care of it.
