(thread idea pitch, feel free to delete, I just want them occasionally in conflict, while in close quarters and in a domestic manner.)

Events take a strange turn. Orochimaru kills Hiruzen during the Chuunin exams. Biwako accuses Danzo of teason, so he quickly kills her, but succumbs to her poison himself. Suddenly there's a big gap in leadership, and everyone in Konoha has foolproof convincing reasons why they are absolutely unqualified to step into the leadership roles.

A very unwilling temporary Hokage Council desperately looks over the secret information... and decides a lot of crime and wrongs happened in the past. The past should be talked about in private chambers, and perhaps honour should be restored publicly, and then everyone (read: those they can force) gets a fair chance at being nominated for the white hat. They call Itachi and Orochimaru back to the village. They will be prisoners during the private talks, housemates during the restoration of honour, and eventually, perhaps one of them will be nominated as candidate to become Hokage, Root Commander, or asked to join the Council.

Oh, and eh, at the end of the message the Council writes the demand for their return is non-negotiable. They stress that Konoha possesses Sasuke.

Orochimaru and Itachi arrive at the same crossing, at the same time. The snow falls around their faces and onto their black hair. Orochimaru can't believe his eyes. He stares. He rubs his wrist as if it hurts. "I can't believe my eyes. They demanded you show up, too? You?"

All of this sounded like an extremely elaborate, but poorly thought out plan. As if he would simply walk back inside the village with the bait of 'let us trial you to become Hokage'.

He was wanted for a reason. He had never been found for a reason.

He ignored it at first. It never reached him by means of first person. Always second hand gossip, prone to being embellished, or outright fabricated to draw a reaction out. By this point, most bounty hunters knew better.

But it continued. The same story, relentless, until Kisame asked him about it, and Itachi looked into it further.

An official summons. An 'investigation' of sorts.

Itachi kept the report with the intel close to his side. If it was true- that Danzo was dead along with Hiruzen, and Biwako, then only Hotaru was left. That should've been enough, though Hotaru was not the level of shinobi that Hiruzen once was.

It merited at least for him to come a bit closer. The threat of Sasuke was unnerving-- it suggested they knew more than they needed to.

When he crosses paths with Orochimaru, he says nothing. Merely continues past the outburst.

All he wants to do is check to make sure Sasuke knows only what he's supposed to, and leave again. That's what he tells himself.
