chat, am I futureshock ?

occasionally I get people say stuff like this, and I'm glad they like my blog, I'm glad they enjoy the surface-level vibes. nonbinary matrix header, soft retro-vibe colourscheme, posts appearing as shell commands, etc.

but I'm not an aesthetic blog

I'm what happens when an autistic tranny who is A Bit Too Much Computer witnesses the realtime enshittification of everything.

first up, i wanna be clear that i'm not trying to shit on the person who sent me this or discourage people who enjoy these aesthetics (or what they perceive as my personal brand) for enjoying them, or from diving deeper. in fact, i would encourage it - please !! go look into things !! discover !! fuck things up !! fix them !!!

now i wanna talk about aesthetics. i love the design language of a lotta late 80s hardware, vehicles, physical interfaces. i love the design language of a lot that in the 90s, as well as software, early GUI stuff etc. and tbh a lot of that right up until the mid 00s. if we wanna play deeply unserious but whimsical visual signifiers for fun and silly reasons, sure then i'm webcore, i'm hackercore, i'm retrofuture and cyber, i'm cassette futurist, i'm cyberpunk or whatever. i'm cute glittery gifs of windows 95 slate dialog boxes and big standing racks full of das blinkenlights. i'm the cave shadow of a CD Walkman i'm that big chonky 80s red 7-segment alarm clock.

but i'm not just aesthetics. i'm not doing all this purely for the bit. up until a couple years ago i was sacrificing a ton of convenience for my principles. now i'm sacrificing certain specific conveniences and a buncha anti-consumer nonsense for my principles and a shit ton of other, better, conveniences.

this wasn't meant to be a long post, and may well end up influencing some of my cyberpriestess posting when i get my website going, as there's a lotta good jumping-off points here.

let me show y'all how i live. at least some of it.

daily driver ? 11-year-old gaming pc w/ some recent era-appropriate upgrades (well, the gpu is pushing it but like is reasonable someone would've done that upgrade).

this is what i mean. this is pluug2, my daily driver. and she still runs games. and yes i'm using arch rn bc i did a reinstall and for whatever reason the version of the void installer i had was corrupted and arch was the only other diy distro i had laying around. she'll end up running something infinitely more cursed in the future once i get s6 stuff figured out.

i spent like half an hour configuring fastfetch (the backend i'm using for hyfetch) bc the default kinda sucked. that's how this works.

i do dumb shit, i have fun, i live by my principles as much as possible...fuck idk

oh right, my thinkpad is a t61 from 2008. her graphics suck enough she literally can't load games. not anything made past idk DX9 ?? however her discord experience is about on part w/ my envy 360 from over 10 years later. she's kinda sick tho. idk. will probably turn her into a media pc or some kinda server since she's got a 2600U w/ 8 threads.

i don't get youtube ads. i don't get tempted by the comments section, i don't have my watch history profiled. i have a local database of playlists (the video tab on a channel counts as a playlist btw) that i can sync and fuzzy search in the terminal and it'll play via the video player on my system. however, i don't get stuff recommended which makes finding stuff entirely active.

i gotta test and tweak games i wanna play bc old hardware and also usually running via compatibility layer (proton my beloved) on account of..well no linux-native version. or the native version has issues.

discord and screenshare don't pay niceys all the time. this is partly a discord enshittification issue but also the discord devs don't care about linux as a platform. they "support" it bc hey electron works there. because it's the fuckign chrome browser. audio support in screenshare is an unofficial feature added by volunteer devs and that's a breach of TOS bc that's the world we live in now.

my brain is full of init system trivia, audio services and routing frameworks, a ton of incomprehensible nonsense that marks the difference between nostalgia-bait and Actually Being Like This.

come on in, by all means ! let's learn the semantics behind vim's actions/keybinds, let's discover old parts of the net, build up an environment from its component pieces. let's suffer together as the separation of accounts forces the use of several different email addresses, a TOTP app, and renewed access tokens to play one (1) game online w/ friends.

i'm not futureshock cybercore cassette retropunk, i'm stubborn and refuse to engage in as much of the bullshit forced on us these days as i physically can.

These days I tend to be more casual roleplay than active roleplay blog. I tend to do more in the way of casual writing and posting musings and things that inspire my muses than a lot of active roleplaying. I simply don't have the time, energy, or motivation to do a lot of heavy roleplaying the way I used to, so I come and go at my leisure.

I still enjoy writing and roleplaying, though, so I am here to do just that. If you wish to interact with me, please keep these things in mind. My replies may be slow and will tend to lean more towards what interests me first - the rest will follow on a schedule. If this does not suit your needs, I understand and harbor no ill will towards you.

I'm back from a week at my mom's house and now I'm getting ads for her toothpaste brand, the brand I've been putting in my mouth for a week. We never talked about this brand or googled it or anything like that.

As a privacy tech worker let me explain why this is happening. (thread emoji)

First of all, your social media apps are not listening to you. This is a conspiracy theory. It's been debunked over and over again.

But frankly they don't nee to because everything else you give them unthinkingly is is way cheaper and way more powerful.

Your apps collect a ton of data from your phone. Your unique device ID. Your location. Your demographics. We know this.

Data aggregators pay to pull in data from EVERYWHERE. When I use my discount card at the grocery story? Every purchase? That's a dataset for sale.

They can match my Harris Teeter purchase to my twitter account because I gave both those companies my email address and phone number and I agreed to all that data-sharing when I accepted those terms of service and the privacy policy.

Here's where eit gets truly nuts, though.

If my phone is regularly in the same GPS location as another phone, they take note of that. They start reconstructing the web of people I'm in regular contact with.

The advertisers can cross-reference my interests and browsing history and purchase history to those around me. It starts to show ME different ads based on the people AROUND me.

Family. Friends. Coworkers.

It will see me ads for things I DON'T Want, but I knows that someone I'm in regular contact with might want.

To subliminally get me to start a conversation about, I don't know, fucking toothpaste.

It never needed to listen to me for this. It's just comparing aggregated metadata.

So. They know my mom's toothpaste. The know I was at my mom's. They know my Twitter. Now I get Twitter ads for mom's toothpaste.

Your data isn't just about you. It's about how it can be used against every person you know, and people you don't. To shape behaviour unconsciously.

Apple's latest updates block app's tracking and Facebook is MAD. They're BEGGING you to just press accept and go back to business as usual.

Block the fuck of of every app's ads. It's not about you:your data shapes the Internet.

Apart from clicking 'do not accept', what else can you do about it?

Firstly, I'm going to plug Firefox as the only non-Chrome based Browser out there. Chrome is made by Google/Alphabet and Alphabet is an advertising company. Most, if not all, big tech companies are.

Then I'm going to plug some plugins. If you don't know what plugins are, now is a great time to learn! They're small pieces of extra software that run on top of (plug in to) an existing app. They're also called extensions (because they extend the app's functionality).

Here's what I use to keep my data mine:

HTTPS Everywhere

An HTTPS connection means the website you're visiting hasn’t been modified before it loaded and that any data you submit to that website can’t be seen by anyone else. HTTPS Everywhere is an extension/plugin made by the nonprofit group the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and it automatically loads websites over HTTPS wherever that's an option.

(nb: Firefox enables this by default in Private Browsing mode and has an option to force HTTPS connections in regular mode in its Privacy and Security menu)

Privacy Badger

Another EFF extension, Privacy Badger blocks invisible third-party trackers on websites. It looks at all the components of a web page, learns which ones track you across the internet, then stops them from loading.

Notably, it only blocks ads that don't respect Do Not Follow headers, which is an option you can (and, imo, should) enable in Firefox's settings.

Privacy Possum

Privacy Possum was written by one of the developers who worked on Privacy Badger, and has some extra features, but - because tracking companies have infinitely more resources and political power than nonprofits or individual app developers - it emphasises costing tracking companies money over user protection.

Privacy Possum's main feature over Badger is "data poisoning" - it does background searches for random things to introduce junk data into your advertising profile.

uBlock Origin

Ad blockers do exactly what you'd expect from the name: they block ads from loading. Since the tracking software is often built into the ad itself that means they also block the tracking code.

Be careful with impersonators: there are a number of untrustworthy extensions that use a similar name in the hope you're not fully paying attention. Fortunately, once it's installed, you can just leave it to work in the background.

ClearURLs

Links are another way to track your movement across the Internet. You know how sometimes links look way longer than they ought to? Some of that might be data that tells the website where you came from (eg: email vs Facebook). ClearURLs removes that extra bumpf.

Multi-Account Containers

Multi-Account Containers, wich come as standard in Firefox, help to isolate your browsing activity. You can have one container for work tabs, and another for online banking, another for social media - and nothing in any of those tables will be able to track anything in any other. You can also have multiple accounts for the same website open in different containers, so you don't need to log in and out all the time, and you can put known arsehole sites like Facebook or Twitter in a container, so it can't follow you around.

Saying that a fictional depiction of a rape is the same as promoting rape is like saying that writing a story about a character being gaybashed is promoting gaybashing. If you have the right to write a story based on your experiences, why don't I? Also, where's the line between depiction and romanticisation? There is none. At all. -- queer survivor who will not let you or anyone silence me.

Literally not something I’ve ever said, so congrats on the reading comprehension and thanks for being the 8,647th person to hop in my inbox or on one of my posts about this subject and attempt to make it about everything EXCEPT for things I actually have said and believe.

And for the record, there is a very clear line between depiction and romanticisation, are you kidding me??? Do you even get how communication works?

A work of fiction that essentially says “here are events that happened,” is a depiction.

A work of fiction that essentially says “here are events that happened, and the way in which they happened is intended to be received as sexy or romantic, as is further evidenced by reader reception in the form of comments about how sexy or romantic that depiction of events that happened was,”

....THAT is romanticization.

I am so, so, soooooooooo endlessly tired of being engaged by people who insist on being willfully dishonest and hypocritical about how much power they perceive fiction as having.

Every other day of the week, fanfic is empowering because it gives literally any of us a platform with which to reach other fans and express our own ideas, storylines and emotions regarding characters we all share an interest in.

But the second THIS conversation comes up, in ANY of its myriad forms, suddenly you’re all like, “ummmmm.....I am just a helpless little author who has never shaped anything I’ve ever written with any kind of specific intent or goal towards how I want the audience to receive or perceive my story?? I wouldn’t even know how to go about doing that? Is that even a thing?”

You all know damn well the difference between a story that depicts rape, pedophilia and incest, and a story that romanticizes/sensationalizes/uses those things as the specific elements that are supposed to result in that story being sexually gratifying to readers who engage with it.

Like, lmfao, I’m not the prude anyone makes me out to be, any more than I’m this evil censor about to go into all your houses and strip you of your ability to write whatever you want. Shockingly, guess what? I’ve written erotica myself! Not about those topics, clearly, but I’ve literally written and sold stories that I wrote with the specific intention of being perceived as erotic, sexy, romantic, etc.....

BECAUSE I, LIKE MOST OTHER WRITERS, KNOWS HOW TO GEAR A STORY IN VARIOUS DIRECTIONS WITHOUT HAVING TO ACTUALLY INCLUDE THE HEADERS “THIS PART IS JUST A DEPICTION” AND “OKAY NOW THIS PART YOU SHOULD THINK IS SEXY.”

LOLOL I’m so fucking tired. Literally the only message I have ever expressed on this subject in all the years I’ve been posting about it, on my own damn blog, in my own damn threads, with people like you always being the one to come and engage ME and still somehow operate under the impression that YOU’RE the ones being silenced here, like I’m the one going around to shut down everything YOU’RE saying every time you even open your mouth on a specific subject.....

Like, did I make that clear enough? Was the irony pointed enough there? Is it maybe sinking in a little, the utter ABSURDITY of people like you streaming into my inbox night after night, week after week, to yell “STOP SILENCING ME, I WILL NOT BE OPPRESSED OR CENSORED BY YOU”.....

When I literally have no idea who most of you are, thus couldn’t silence you even if I WANTED to, which again, is not something I’ve ever even expressed, given that my message on this subject over. And over. And over. And over. AND ALWAYS AND CONSISTENTLY IS:

I am not for censorship. Not only do I hate censorship, I don’t view it as even slightly effective, and at most its like trying to slap a bandaid on top of a wound without any attempt to even examine the injury itself and see how it came to be and what it really needs to be effectively treated.

My viewpoints on this subject have always been about one thing and one thing only: personal accountability.

As in, I advocate for people to just fucking apply a little more awareness to their OWN power, their OWN impact, their OWN platform....even if that platform is only fanfiction on the internet, yes.

Power and impact and influence are all still there, even among fanfic writers, as anyone who’s ever posted or reblogged about the legitimacy of fanfiction as a form of fiction, like, already damn well knows, so its so exasperating seeing that fly right out the window the second anyone asks a fanfic writer to scrutinize their own work to even just make sure THEY THEMSELVES are okay with ALL the potential impacts of whatever it is they’re writing.

Fiction is just language. Language is just a tool for communicating ideas, intents, emotions, experiences and more.

And like literally any other tool in the history of humanity, for this is literally the nature of tools and how they work....

A tool has no inherent ‘goodness’ that makes it IMPOSSIBLE to be wielded in a way that produces harm. It simply exists. And its capacity to help or to harm, to be used in positive ways or negative ways.....depends SOLELY on its wielder and how they apply that tool and to what ends.

Fiction, whether the kind on bookshelves in stores or the kind found only on Ao3....has tremendous power. It communicates new ideas to people who’ve never considered a certain point of view before. It conveys new experiences to people who would never encounter something depicted firsthand in their own day to day lives. It conveys emotions, imbued into the narrative by the author themselves, even if those emotions are not necessarily always what the author thinks they are or intended them to be or not always ones readers truly read into the text versus simply project onto the text themselves.

But there are an infinite variety of ways in which fiction has power, has impact, can and does reach people. It connects people, linking them via shared experiences or viewpoints or ideas so that a reader seeing themselves represented in what an author is writing can at least say they’re not alone, there’s someone else out there who says or thinks or experiences things similar to them. It can persuade people, exposing them to new viewpoints they’ve never considered before and convincing them of their validity by the arguments written into the text, even if they were never intended that way or the author might not even consciously be aware of making an argument in the text. It can fortify people, reassuring them that a perspective they have on a subject does have validity because here in this story, there’s someone thinking the same things for the same reasons. It can help people heal or even just hold on long enough to heal, by seeing their own tragedies reflected in a fictional mirror that still manages to impart that healing and recovery after something tragic are possible, that there is potentially more good still to come, in a reader’s life just as in a character’s story.

All I have ever expressed, over and over and over, is that its important to always keep sight of the fact that because fiction is just a tool, and not any more infallible than any writer using it to convey their thoughts and ideas and emotions.....

Fiction DOES still have just as much power to harm, too, if wielded irresponsibly. Everything I just detailed above has a flip side. Its a two way street, it can go both ways. Fiction can just as easily connect bigoted people, white supremacists, homophobes, transphobes, etc.....via shared experiences or viewpoints that reflect and empower the perspectives of bigots, etc. It can persuade people to do or think things that aren’t healthy, by exposing them to toxic viewpoints and convincing them of their validity due to a reader being vulnerable to various arguments that are made in bad faith. And no, this does not mean that I’m saying people run out and do what they see depicted or even romanticized in fiction. I’m simply saying fiction holds every capacity to convince people of the validity of something harmful as much as something healing.....it all just depends on how important that particular thing or argument is to their specific lives, how vulnerable or exposed they are to particular arguments, how much weight they give it, etc, etc. There are a ton of factors here. All I’m saying is this IS a factor, its included among those many, many other things.

Moving on....it can fortify the worst kind of people, reassure them that their prejudices or toxic viewpoint on a subject has validity because a story is seemingly endorsing it without any sign within the narrative that the characters’ perspective on this matter IS flawed, or toxic or unhealthy or prejudiced, rather than just a straight forward and unbiased depiction. And yes, it can hinder personal healing or recovering, by keeping a reader mired in the same kind of thoughts or emotions they’re already currently battling and reinforcing their personal perception that there is no alternative to those things, etc, etc.

None of these are in any way a given, with any given story, any given writer, any given reader. There are tons of variables, as I said.

But also as I’ve said....my only point has always just been that these things EXIST, the potential for these things to happen in this or that way EXISTS, and it is willfully dishonest of fanfic writers and readers to insist on the power of fanfiction to help, to heal, to connect people......while simultaneously trying to absolve themselves of even the need to be CAREFUL with how they wield the power of fiction, because apparently, with fanfiction, its ONLY ever a one way street. Fanfiction NEVER has the power to harm, to reinforce negative or prejudiced perspectives, impart and convince readers of toxic viewpoints and arguments.

How can you pretend that’s not how this works? That saying la la la, I’m JUST a fanfic writer, I only have a couple hundred readers maybe, so by virtue of that, somehow, only good things can result from my writing, there’s noooooooo possible negative impact to any of my work or various ideas I put forth....

Like, that isn’t a thing! LOLOL. That’s not a disclaimer with any power or truth. All it is, is a fandom-spread and perpetuated lie meant to reassure people that here in this space, there is a kind of power that unlike ALL OTHER FORMS OF POWER IN EXISTENCE.....can only ever be a good thing, a positive thing...and thus there is no need for any one in a fandom space, whether writer or reader, to ever have to be on their guard or careful about what they say or believe the way they have to be ‘in the outside world.’ Here, in fandom, you can finally just RELAX, you can just enjoy yourself and have fun and not have to worry about whether you’re doing or saying the wrong thing because none of those things are even a POSSIBILITY here, and anyone who says otherwise is just trying to tarnish our perfect paradise, let the ugliness of the outside world into it via unnecessary and unasked for criticism and scrutiny that isn’t fair to apply here because its not like any of us have any real power, we’re just fans, writing stuff on the internet.

And people are just...DETERMINED not to accept that, or to even LOOK at it as the actual subject being discussed in a lot of these conversations. So you spin everything I and others like me say, turn them into arguments we’ve never actually espoused, warn against the perils of censorship we’ve never actually asked or advocated for, stand tall against the attempts to silence you...THAT HAVE NEVER ACTUALLY EXISTED.

Like....the message that bothers me, the communication that I personally am disturbed by seeing practically everywhere I look in fandom? Yes....its the message conveyed by the mere existence, the sheer volume of fics that depict traumas exactly like mine....but in ways that sexualize them, make them seem more about erotic fantasy rather than the abuses of power that they are in real life. I hate these kinds of stories, and just how damn MUCH of them there are, its true. I’m not denying it, I’ve never denied it. To me, them and all the hundreds and thousands of kudos and comments they receive - even without reading the fics directly, just via a mere AWARENESS that these conversations are taking place, no matter how hard I try to pretend otherwise - to me, the message being conveyed over and over by them is that in the right light, from the right angle, things that happened to me at various points in my life are HOT, are SEXY.....

Like as an example, since apparently it seems I’ve been using my ‘gaybashed’ card too freely and unfairly shutting down conversations like this (lol again, let’s not forget, conversations that I begin, on my own blog, and that not a damn one of you is forced to interact with no matter how hard to play the STOP SILENCING angle when voluntarily approaching ME and trying to shame or guilt ME into not talking so much about this topic, aka SILENCING MEEEEEEEEEE)...

Anyway, all that aside, for this example let me pull from something I don’t talk about as much: the years when I was an escort in my late teens and early twenties, literally getting into bed with much older and extremely predatory men because I needed the money....AND because I was using this in part as a ‘coping mechanism’ to convince myself that sex had no power to hurt me. That thus by doing this I was retroactively taking away my rapes’ ability to harm me in the first place, and thus, I had never really been harmed and was FINE..... Except I was very much NOT okay, I absolutely ended up revictimized and further traumatizing myself because a lot of the people I interacted with at that period of my life were NOT good people and DIDN’T have a care for my best interests or even safety, even while saying and doing all the right things, the sexy things, even the romantic things...

I mean, I’m just saying....I could absolutely, without a doubt, write some of my own life experiences, things that were traumatizing to me and have left lingering scars....I could take some of those and write them in such a way as to have a sexualized or romanticized slant, publish them on Ao3 with names swapped out for some fictional characters and call it an AU.......and I for sure would get comments and kudos about how hot all of that was.

Now, I have no interest in doing that, obviously....but the thing is, I don’t HAVE to. Because those stories already EXIST, even if they don’t exactly match up to my specific experiences and they’re written by people who literally have no idea I even exist, let alone have lived through scenes eerily similar to what they write.

And just like those stories exist....the comments, and the kudos, and the praise and the glorification of these stories, the events depicted within them, the DYNAMICS depicted within them....these already exist as well. And I’m painfully, PAINFULLY aware of that. Every day. Every fandom I’m in. Every fandom I’ve ever been in.

And it SUCKS. I hate knowing that two posts down from some story I’m reading, there’s a story that has people drooling over the exact kind of predator that fucked with me and my head so much back in those years. I hate stumbling into an untagged AU every once in awhile and finding Bruce being depicted as Dick’s sugar daddy, preying on the MUCH younger man that we all normally associate with being his SON.....and knowing from past experience that if I click on the comments, almost without a doubt, judging by the 22 comments on one chapter alone, I’ll find enough swooning over how HOT and ROMANTIC this is, that it will most likely make me violently ill for the rest of the night. The thing so many of you don’t get is....none of this is even about whether I read these stories or not, none of it is about whether all of them get tagged properly or not....hell, none of it is actually about whether the people writing these fics are actually pedophiles or ‘endorsing’ these things or anything like that....I NEVER ARGUE ANY OF THAT, BECAUSE NONE OF IT IS THE POINT.

The point is just....the sheer bombardment of a singular message across so many fandoms, so many pairings, from so many people....

With that message being, to a very wide audience....with the right character in the right scenario....the things that for various people like myself and other survivors who DON’T like being surrounded by all this either, whether or not there are many survivors who for whatever reason DO find themselves okay with it...

(And considering our existence and arguments don’t invalidate your acceptance of these things, why do you so confidently tout the idea that YOUR existence and arguments should somehow innately just make all of this less objectionable to us? Just curious.)

The point is, no matter who is writing these stories or why, whether they ACTUALLY endorse these things or would never in a million years find them acceptable in real life (and again, why are you so confident that this is true for EVERYONE who writes these things, and by extension, why the FUCK do you presume its okay to expect all survivors to just give EVERYONE the benefit of the doubt as to why they’re writing these stories, when some of them are virtually indistinguishable from the kinds of things someone who DID find these things hot and sexy to enact on others in real life, would write themselves)....

Like.....none of that matters. Because none of that in any way affects the reality so many of us experience in fandom spaces:

You shame US for saying this makes our fandom environment toxic and hostile at times.....and you flip the script and ask how dare WE shame survivors, who are probably just using these fics to cope....and literally ALL the people reading and writing these fics are survivors probably, I mean, you don’t know....and of course it’d be wildly inappropriate to ask so its probably best to just assume everyone writing these things are survivors....and thus we, no matter if we are survivors ourselves, have no business SHAMING or SILENCING them for just working through their shit in ways that its not even like it can actually hurt us anyway.

Except it DOES. It IS. And we say that, and you REFUSE TO HEAR US. You say “well this isn’t true for me, so it can’t be true for you or else just doesn’t matter if it is,” even though at no point have I or others I know ever said “because this is true for me, I am assuming it to be true for all survivors.”

You come into MY inbox, and act like you’re standing tall and proud against MY silencing tactics. Yeah, would I love it if I could go even a single day without having to gingerly avoid these stories and all mention of them, all casual references to them, all glowing praise of them, everywhere I look in fandom? Absofuckinglutely. Does me WANTING this thing - this thing we all know is never in actual danger of happening, lol - does this in ANY way ACTIONABLY translate into me censoring anyone, impeding anyone’s ability to write or post or read these things, is it me going in the comments of any of these fics and yelling HOW DARE YOU WRITE THIS and when that doesn’t get me the response I want, going to the blogs of the writers and yelling I WILL NOT BE SILENCED?

No. No. And fuck no. None of these things are happening, none of these things are reality.

And yet here you are, like SOOOOOOO MANY before you and like SOOOOOO MANY who will inevitably follow you in the future....

Work and life just get mixed together. They happen rarely till industrial times there were just speech, writing, and printing, but when they do, they do badly. 16804294 what 0. WordPress 3.5 – (2012)

Mobile and high resolution devices were already becoming accessible to all users. WordPress 3.5 streamlined the user interface for modern retina display devices. This included upgraded icons and adaptive styles that looked great on any screen resolution. See more features and screenshots of WordPress 3.5. WordPress 3.8 – (2013)

The appearance and basic style of WordPress UI weren’t changed since 2008 and were way overdue for a major upgrade. The goal for this upgrade was to handle mobile devices more elegantly and make WordPress more accessible. After a ton of work, the new WordPress user interface was released with WordPress 3.8. The new user interface which is still used (with minor enhancements) was mobile responsive, had more color schemes, used icon fonts, and Open Sans for typography.

WordPress 3.9 – (2014)

WordPress kept improving the UI to handle new features. WordPress 3.9 made several enhancements it started using flat buttons in the post editor, drag and drop image uploads, gallery previews, and more. It also added live previews when adding widgets in theme customizer. See more features and screenshots of WordPress 3.9. WordPress 4.0 – (2014)

The same year WordPress 4.0 was released. There was no major change in the UI. However, there were some cool changes that fit right into the existing WordPress admin look. A new grid view for Media gallery was introduced with infinite scroll and smooth editing. See screenshots and features of WordPress 4.0. WordPress 4.2 – (2015)

WordPress 4.2 came with a tiny but significant improvement in the admin area color scheme. The grays were given a slight blue hue and the blues were changed to pure blue with no red channel. See more features and screenshots of WordPress 4.2. WordPress 4.5 – (2016)

WordPress 4.5 brought some improvements in the default WordPress visual post editor. A new inline link editing feature was introduced along with some new inline text shortcuts. Responsive previews were added in theme customizer which allowed users to preview their theme desktop, tablet, and mobile without changing devices. WordPress 4.6 – (2016) In WordPress 4.6, the core team decided to start using native fonts instead of loading Open Sans from Google servers. This release also streamlined updates, which allowed users to install, update, and delete plugins/themes without leaving a page. WordPress 4.8 – (2017)

WordPress 4.8 introduced a new set of widgets to add media like images, audio, video, and rich text. It also added a new dashboard widget that displayed WordPress news and events. For more features and screenshots, see our overview of WordPress 4.8. WordPress 4.9 – (2017)

The last major release of WordPress for 2017 added more features to Theme Customizer. It added a new theme browsing and preview experience in the customizer. It also made code editing in custom CSS and theme/plugin editors much easier by adding syntax highlighting and auto-completion features. 6. Other characters/muns you’re interested in roleplaying with?

I want to play with Fort Max, Verity, Tyrest, Pharma, Chase, Agent 113, and Nightbeat. Not necessarily in that order. Some of them, I just want to have one specific thread with; others, I'd really like to have an ongoing RP relationship with.

And whenever I catch sight of somebody playing an IDW Prowl with a personality OTHER than "arrogant unsympathetic sociopath," I want to latch onto them and have Prowl-twin interactions. You know who you are. I'm vagueing about you. Come to me. (hahaha you don't know who you are, you don't follow me.)

15. What’s an M!A that would be fun to try out?

Something that reverts Prowl's memories to, like, pre-war, pre-Iacon, pre-Froid. So stripped of all the rigid social practices he holds himself to to seem normal to others. Witness the wonder that is Undiluted Prowl. He steal thing off desk. He sit under table. He screm at crowd.

It would be fun for two reasons, I think. One, it'd give me a chance to demonstrate HOW MUCH Prowl changed about himself and HOW MUCH of himself he represses on a daily basis just to try to fit in with others. And that's sad and would tug at your heartstrings, which makes me laugh in evil glee. Two, Prowl is currently surrounded by a fair number of people who, if presented with him sitting under a table for no reason, would cheerfully sit with him; or if presented with him randomly screaming at a crowd, would not say "shut up," but instead say "what's wrong?" And that would be an important thing for him to see when the M!A ended and he got his memories back—that he's found people who like him not because he works his ass off to be Not Weird, but because they accept his weirdness.

19. What’s your opinion on blog themes? How do you feel about your own?

if you have an #aesthetic tiny theme that crams all the content into a brick the size of a playing card while leaving the rest of the screen unused except for a giant over-photoshopped background there's a 90% chance that me and my near-sighted glasses-wearing ass hate you a little bit.

I also think that themes with infinite scrolling or more than one column should be saved for like, art blogs or other picture-dominated blogs rather than RP blogs, but they don't fill me with wrath.

I like my theme! I coded it all myself. It still needs some fixing—like, I've been meaning to dig through the comic for a picture of Prowl in his post-Devastator Earth body (with the fang-shaped push bar) rather than his post-Devastator pre-Earth body (with the little handlebars everywhere), because the Earth body is what he ACTUALLY wears. And I apparently messed up the math on the column heights a bit because they aren't quiiiite the same height. And the redirect page for all the info pages doesn't scroll, which is fine for now because it doesn't have enough content to need to scroll, but will be bad when I add more pages, but for some reason I can't figure out how to get it to scroll while making the background stay still, probably because I flubbed something somewhere in the divs. And I'm reconsidering the red borders. I wanted the blog theme to be really sparse monochrome with only a few flashes of color, and those red borders were supposed to be the flashes (besides the verdigris in the header & sidebar art), but the borders might be TOO MUCH color. Maybe I'll make the borders black and have them turn red when you hover over that div? Yeah, that sounds good. Somebody remind me to do that when I get home.

Oh. And the relationships page is unfinished/out of date.

What, like, me Puff tell you Blurr something on him Prowl's behalf? Prowl's got nothing to say to Blurr tbh. Except that he thinks you should be in jail and he strongly advised Starscream against hiring you. But tbh Blurr would probably go "tell me something I don't know" so like Prowl doesn't need to say that.

Build a Static Portfolio With Advanced CSS Bar Chart

In a previous post, I showed you how to build a beautiful fullscreen portfolio page. During that tutorial we also learned how to create a responsive CSS column chart. In this tutorial we’ll build another attractive static portfolio page, this time featuring a pure CSS bar chart without using any external JavaScript library, SVG, or the canvas element!

1. Begin With the Page Markup

The page markup consists of a header and three fullscreen sections:

Note: Beyond the elements’ specific classes, our markup contains a number of utility (helper) classes. We’ll use this methodology to keep our CSS as DRY as possible. However, for the sake of readability, within the CSS we won’t group common CSS rules.

2. Define Some Basic Styles

Following what we’ve just discussed above, we first specify some reset rules along with a number of helper classes:

The call-to-action includes a thin line which is animated infinitely, compelling the user to scroll down to see what’s beneath “the fold” (which may or may not exist).

Section #1 JavaScript

Initially the call-to-action will be visible. But when the user starts scrolling, it will disappear. More specifically, it will receive the is-hidden class which we have just defined in the styles above.

Style the Background Image

The left part of this section contains an image taken from Wordpress Code Backgrounds on Envato Elements. It will give us the atmosphere we’re looking for, whilst inspiring the colors we use elsewhere in the design:

Some key things:

The image will appear on screens wider than 900px and

we’ll use CSS (via the background-image property) and not HTML (via the img element) to place the image within the page. We choose this method because that gives us an easy way to enhance the image appearance. For example, we’ll skew it by taking advantage of its ::after pseudo-element. You could even play with its colors using background-blend-mode: luminosity;, for example.

Note: By default an img is an empty element and doesn’t have pseudo-elements.

The corresponding styles:

Style the Chart

At this point we’ll concentrate on the most challenging part of our demo; how to construct the bar chart.

The chart will have two axes. On the y-axis we’ll place the web skills (CSS, HTML, JavaScript, Python, Ruby). On the other x-axis we’ll put the skill levels (Novice, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert).

The y-axis

In terms of markup, each skill is a list item placed inside the .chart-skills list. Next, each list item will hold its text within a span element, like this:

We define a fixed width for the span element equal to 120px. To avoid repetition and so we can easily change this value (as other values will depend on it), let’s store it inside a CSS variable:

Each list item will contain its own ::before and ::after pseudo-elements:

The ::after pseudo-element will have a light gray color and a static width which is calculated by subtracting the span width from the list item width:

But as soon as the chart becomes visible in the viewport, their width will be animated and receive a value that will be determined by the associated skill level:

Add Class When in View

There are multiple ways to detect whether an element is visible in the viewport or not. Let’s take advantage of the following handy function extracted from an old, yet popular StackOverflow thread:

So, back to the job in hand! When the chart becomes visible in the current viewport, we’ll give it the in-view class.

Here’s the JavaScript code that does this job:

The ::before pseudo-elements should be animated sequentially. To give them the desired transition speed, we’ll use two other CSS variables along with the calc() CSS function.

Here are the CSS styles responsible for revealing those sudo-elements:

Keep in mind that Microsoft Edge doesn’t support the above math operations, so if you need to support it, just pass some static values instead, like this:

Some things to note:

We set the list as a flex container. Also, we absolutely position it and give it a left padding equal to the width of the spans of the first list.

We give list items flex-grow: 1 to grow and take up all the available space.

The spans are positioned at the very bottom of their parent list item.

7. Go Responsive

We’re almost done! As one last thing, let’s ensure that the text has a solid appearance across all screens. We’ll apply a rule targeting narrow screens:

One important note here is that in our styles we’ve used rem for setting the font sizes. This approach is really useful because the font sizes are relative to the root element (html). If we decrease its font size like in the code above, the rem-related font sizes will be dynamically decreased. Of course, we could have used rems for the other CSS properties as well.

Conclusion

In this tutorial we improved our CSS knowledge by learning how to build an attractive static portfolio page. We went one step further and created a responsive bar chart without using any external JavaScript library, SVG, or the canvas element. Just with plain CSS!

Add smooth scrolling behavior to the menu links without using any external JavaScript library.
