In Northern New Zealand we have 28 species of seabird - which is a huge number! We also have 5 species that are endemic - they breed in this region and nowhere else in the world, like this rako /Buller’s shearwater. ⠀ ⠀ Aotearoa New Zealand has more seabird species than all of our land birds and water birds combined. We have more native and endemic seabirds than any other country in the world, and we also regularly see migrant seabirds that come to forage in our region during their non-breeding seasons. ⠀ ⠀ But what are we doing to protect them? Surprisingly little, compared to our land birds. Seabirds face threats at sea such as fisheries and plastic pollution, but also on land such as introduced predators and light pollution.
