everyone is so needy and excited to get their thesfest scores back,, i literally don’t want to get them because everybody is gonna be comparing their scores to each other and etc and i already have 17 charts in my mind comparing myself to people so it’s just gonna be what i do in my mind in real life which is extremely toxic for my mental health Haha

#Thesfest17 Day 6

Our last day at thesfest!! I started my day at a workshop called “The perfect monologue”. This workshop taught the technique of creating a monologue for auditions, competitions, etc. from a regular scene. We took a scene from the play “The Last Night at Ballyhoo” between the two characters Sunny and Lala. We decided to use Lala’s lines, as she has a more active objective in the scene, and then went from there. We deleted lines that didn’t make sense and changed existing lines to match the new context of the monologue. We didn’t change the content of the line, but rather the verb tenses, pronouns, and other small grammar problems. I enjoyed this approach a lot!! I do sometimes have difficulty finding monologues I enjoy, and with this technique you can really make them your own.

After the workshop it was time to head to my final callback of the week, this one for Webster University. I went to a hotel near the UNL campus, and was lead into a little conference room. Here I got to meet some coaches/professors from Webster. They had me perform my monologue and then worked with me to see what different ways I could do it and if I could further refine it. I really liked the acting coach I worked it, and found the one on one training SUPER helpful and fun, because I’ve never really done anything like that before. It seemed as though they liked me (one guy said I could slay people with this monologue), and I liked them– so I would say it went pretty well.

After that I headed to lunch with my troupe. Then it was time for “Sweeney Todd”!! I think (maybe??) I was the only person (besides Stacie obviously) who had seen the show before, so I was really excited. I thought the production did a really good job, and I especially enjoyed the special effects used to make all of Sweeney’s murders that much more jarring.

Then dinner– my last meal at the dining hall. To be honest I am ready to eat normal, non cafeteria food again, and so is my skin! All this fried food has not been great for it. But after dinner our troupe went to go see “The Fox on the Fairway”. Although I do love musicals, I was super excited to see a play! This show is a comedy about a golf tournament. Yeah, doesn’t sound that great, but this show was HILARIOUS. The chemistry between the cast was dynamic, and each actor was very dedicated the quirks of their character. I was laughing nonstop, and the cast had the entire audience roaring by the end of the night. I’m glad this was the final show we saw at Nebraska!

After that Shannon and I headed back to our dorm, started packing, and then went to bed. I fell asleep immediately; this week has been a lot of fun, but also very tiring.

Final #thesfest17 thoughts? This was my second year at the festival. Last year I had more free time to go to work shops and hang out, whereas this year I spent a lot of my time by myself talking to colleges and going to callbacks. This is NOT a complaint though, this year was different in a good way. I got to meet so many cool professionals in the industry from all across the nation. From talking to them about their experiences, and spending a lot of time by myself this week going to different meetings, it all seemed very real to me. I began to see myself possibly doing this for real… possibly.

I would also like to thank some people. Thanks to my troupe for making this week so fun, and to my parents for being so supportive! Also, thank you Stacie for volunteering to spend a week of your time with us even when we are being annoying, and thank you for helping me through out college auditions, callbacks, and everything like that, I don’t know what me or our troupe would do without you!! Also thank you to Matt Luyber who was super helpful and informational about his school (Webster), and for being super sweet when I was obviously nervous. And most of all thank you to CDA who has allowed me to go on this trip for two years now! This is the coolest and most enriching school trip I’ve ever gone on and it has affected me remarkably. I truly think my outlook towards the future would be different without it. I’ve got to see so many amazing shows and learn so many awesome things this week! I’m really sad it’s over, but I’m excited to go home and hug my pets.

Hey guys! I don't normally do this but.... many of you don't know that I'm a theatre kid, and over the course of this year I got to be in a One Act that my school troupe took to compete in competitions and placed second in the state of Arizona, which qualifies us to go to NATIONALS! Nationals are over the summer I'm Lincoln, Nebraska, but we can't get there without a little help, there are 15 (ish) of us going and we don't have the funds to cover it. To many of us, and me, theatre is what we want to pursue as our careers and has changed our lives, it would be greatly appreciated if you could donate and share this post to get the word around as this is an amazing opportunity! why is nobody fucking dedicated but then they’ll get mad when we’re unprepared as fuck. sure just go home so we fail ONCE AGAIN! maybe you are just comfortable with your position in the theatre department and maybe you’re okay with having a couple fuck ups because you have a solidified part in fucking everything, but i don’t. cooperate before i start working with the sophomores because they at least stay after and dedicate themselves to their art.

in december i went out of town for a weekend w my theater troupe for thesfest, which went well but we got back at like one in the morning? which wasn't great but my best friend picked me up and we got coney island and went and walked around the lake for awhile and it was v nice my man
