Tôi mua cuốn sách vào một buổi chiều man mác ở một hiệu sách nằm trong hẻm, hiệu sách nhỏ, có một chú chó hiền lành trước cửa và nhiều con mèo phía trong, hiệu sách có mùi hương dễ chịu của giấy và hoa khô.

Cuốn sách tôi mua là một cuốn sách cũ, có chữ ký của người chủ trước, được bày trên cùng kệ với những cuốn sách mới khác. Sau khi hỏi han về những cuốn sách khác cùng tác giả, chị bán sách nói "mấy cuốn đó chị có thể cho em mượn đọc, chứ chị không bán đâu"; tự nhiên lại thấy lòng dịu đi như tiết trời buổi chiều.

Buổi chiều ấy là một trong những buổi chiều thong thả của những ngày mà sếp đã quá ngán ngẩm tôi đến mức thường xuyên bảo tôi ra về sớm để không phải nhìn thấy mặt của tôi nữa.

Đến đây tôi lại phải thừa nhận, những mối tương tác của tôi luôn thật kì cục, trong khi tôi thương họ quá chừng thì họ lại ngán ngẩm tôi quá chừng như vậy; trong khi tôi ngán ngẩm cuộc đời quá chừng thì cuộc đời lại cứ bám dính lấy tôi như thiết tha tôi vô cùng vậy.

Mua sách xong tôi chạy xe thẳng đến tiệm cà phê thân mến, uống một chút cà phê với sữa nóng, nói nhiều câu chuyện không biết từ đâu đến, sau đó trở lại với cái ổ nóng nực, và ôm máy tính và nghĩ về những thứ không quan trọng, và tương tư một cuộc đời không có bếp.

Đến một, hai giờ sáng tôi vẫn chưa buồn đi ngủ; qua nhiều cơn tỉnh ngủ như thế, tôi rút ra được sự khác nhau giữa cà phê và cồn; khi có cà phê, tôi thường buồn bã và tỉnh táo, trong khi cồn thì lại khiến tôi buồn bã và mụ mị. Một vài lần, sếp gõ đầu tôi, nói "là phụ nữ, phải giữ được cái đầu trong suốt và tỉnh táo"; từ đó tôi không cố chìm trong mụ mị nữa.

Nhưng thỉnh thoảng, tôi vẫn thấy người ngợm bơ bất hẳn đi, như thể đầu óc đang lang thang trong giấc mộng nào khác, như thể cái tôi thực tại đang diễn ra quá trình sụp đổ thê lương, bằng những cái khều từ tốn nào khác. Lúc này, tôi chỉ muốn đứng sững trước ai đó rồi nói "không có người, cuộc đời tôi lở lún như vậy sao" ; rồi tôi nhận thấy, nếu phải chứng kiến những trò tan nát trên, ba mẹ hẳn sẽ sống trong nước mắt mất thôi.

Vậy nên tôi lại đành buồn bã bước đi mà không cần nghe hay kể thêm câu chuyện nào nữa.
