Since we're talking about everyone's "fav", Hoover, who really sucked any enjoyment there was out of the main ship. This thought popped into my head the other day after I misread a question in the discord XD oops

But in all seriousness, Hover makes fun of Quickmane's facial scars (which I guess we're meant to side with and think is funny because he's awful...until the writer tells me I should've been sympathizing with him cause he loves his kids and isn't a homophobe) RIGHT AFTER she makes fun of Nothing's name and asks her "what's wrong with your leg :c".

Ignoring the obvious, maybe we shouldn't reduce one of the mc's to making fun of another character's disability even if it's the villain, in our "positive disability representation" show, part. Excluding the fact that he's blind (which Hover also makes fun of) Quick has the exact same facial scar as Nothing and Hover just casually calls him a "meat face" right in front of the poor girl. Like, this character is a hot mess and a horrible girlfriend to be. It doesn't help that Nothing looks sad in the shot where Hover's saying all this too. I know it's meant to be because she's uncomfortable/upset about what Powerstrike is saying buuuuuut. If I were in Nothing's shoes I know for a fact my brain would've instantly been like 'oh that's what she sees when she looks at my face too I guess' if that were my crush...or hell, if anyone did that. Maybe that's just a me problem but still.

All of the above. Yes. It also yet again contradicts what the previous anon was talking about where the My Pride Wiki states that Hover admires Nothing's scars. First of all, she doesn't and secondly: why does the above with Quickmane occur if that's the case?

It just seems like a lazy attempt at disability positivity that was not only not implemented in the final product but also carried a lot of contradiction like "it's OK to be ableist as long as the person you're being ableist to is somebody you personally dislike".

Like Hover didn't know about Quickmane's history with Nothing? It still wouldn't be OK even if she did but she just went off at this random dude with a disability and mocked said disability for no good reason so the squealing Hover fans could be all 'go off, queen!"

And this is the confusing thing about people worshipping Hover's character for me. She's not a great character by her own merit. Her most praiseworthy moment is when she's being awful to other characters around her and building herself up off their shortcomings. Except what the fans don't realise is that the characters she's making fun of are both abusive and one of them kills babies with a giant smile on his face. It's the lowest of the lowest hanging fruit to try and make your "good" character seem good in comparison to the villain.

It's really sloppy and lazy characterisation. Especially when people like justifying Hover's ineffectiveness as a supportive spouse by saying 'she was too scared to stand up for Nothing, she made a mistake' when she ultimately ditched Nothing for these characters.

And what the fuck was stopping her in the above scenario if that were the case? If anything: she was in a more dire situation here because she was on her own and there was no guarantee anyone - even Nothing - had her back. But she still mouthed off at an entire pride of lions before turning her back on them and calmly walking away.

But I guess because helping Nothing involved her not being a wisecracking ableist comedian, that's where the line on her effectiveness was drawn. What an icon. /sarcasm.

He is content and sated under the familiar weight of her body; feather light in comparison to his much bulkier, muscly frame. It feels incredible to experience this with her; the quiet aftermath of long and attentive lovemaking. Enjoying one another’s presence; the way her fingers found and traced his tattoos while his slowly combed through her hair.

He’d known when he hadn’t been scared off by the gentler and more meaningful moments that he was entering uncharted territory. Caught up in a mess of tangled sheets and naked limbs; enjoying the smell of her hair and the sensation of her body pressed against his and her warmth breath that tickled his skin. He actually LIKED her; beyond the pangs of lust and the yearnings of want and need and the incredible sex that those things had led to. That bubbly and bright personality she possessed despite the enormity of the situation surrounding them; optimistic and cheerful even with the dangers hanging over their heads. Her smile; broad and beautiful and crinkling the corners of her eyes and the bridge of her nose. The sound of her voice; childlike and slightly high pitched, yet often so assertive and authoritative. That tiny body encompassing a huge personality; social and friendly yet demanding and forceful when need be. Possessing a strength that went far beyond the physical.

It’s one thing to have muscles and a powerful build and combat training. It's another to be mentally sound and prepared for anything thrown in your direction.

Even in those immediate days after their initial coupling, he’d considered the possibility of more. The chance of getting to know her better outside of the job; away from the stress and the worry and the fear of the unknown dangers lingering darkened corners. She’d already shown that his baggage and his issues weren’t a deal breaker; easily -and uncharacteristically- confiding in her about his drinking problem and his addiction to pain meds and the painful mistakes of the past. Not only the monsters and demons that haunted him over the death of his son, but the horrible decision he’d made in the months leading up to it. He’d told her about his mother dying when he was young and the nightmare he’d been left with; an alcoholic father that physically and mentally abused him. His failed marriage; a cheating, emotionally absent spouse that had deserved way more than he had given her. The horrors of the things he’d seen during his time in the military and what he’d done on the job; taking lives in order to save his own and that of his clients. His death wish; the hope that a stranger’s bullet would take him down because he’d been too chicken to do the job himself.

Everything had come pouring out of him; in the same way that she’d been so open and honest about her own life and failed marriage and the monster of a husband that had inflicted numerous traumas upon her. Both of them simply listening and absorbing the truths and confessions; neither judging the other for the things they’d done or the things that still haunted them. It was the first time he’d ever seen genuine sympathy in someone’s eyes; he’d gotten used to recognizing pity and disgust over the years. But the way she’d watched his face as he spoke and then tenderly cleared tears from his cheeks with gentle fingertips had told him everything he’d needed to know. She was different; unique and beautiful and put in his path for a reason. And IF the job went smoothly and they managed to get out of Bangladesh, he was going to make it happen; transform nothing into something. Willing to welcome her into his home and travel to Colorado to see hers. Wanting to know everything he possibly could about her; hungry for more time together and curious about just where things would end up. A long distance relationship perhaps; weeks or even months spent visiting each other, trips taken together, holidays enjoyed with one another. Suddenly he had a list of things to think forward to; the death wish suddenly pushed to the back of his mind and all but forgotten about.

Her fingers abandon their task. Halting the slow and methodical trace of his tattoos in favour lightly dragging a nail along the scar near his left shoulder; thin and faded and running vertically for several inches. An old injury; shrapnel from a roadside bomb in Kandahar that had made its way under the strap of his kevlar vest and left him a panicked and bleeding mess in the middle of the desert. She’s spent years exploring all of his blemishes and imperfections; committing each one to memory and able to blindly find each and every one. But it’s the internal scars that she attempts to fix; deep and jagged, some still open and festering. Every gentle touch, every whispered loving affirmation, each word of praise, all working together to heal him. Or to at least help him forget, even temporarily.

She peppers his collarbone with kisses. Slowly travelling from one shoulder to the other and then back again, stopping at his Adam’s apple and then moving up his throat and over the underside of his chin. Finishing with a chaste peck. Capturing his bottom lip between her teeth; giggling when he gives a dramatic frown.

Tangling his fingers in her hair, he presses a kiss to her forehead; eyes briefly closing as he breathes in the soft, familiar scent that clings to her hair. “You good?”

A gentle smile plays on her lips as she nods. “You?”

“I think it’s safe to say I am. Even though I swear I went blind for about a minute.”

It’s a feat in itself when you manage to hold out THAT long. Approaching that much needed release several times and then backing off and starting from scratch; rebuilding that pressure and tension in your stomach and in the small of your back until it becomes physically painful and you simply can’t continue with the self inflicted torture. Those moments leading to completion frantic and desperate; hard and punishing thrusts and animalistic noises emanating from somewhere deep in your chest. The orgasm had been extremely powerful and seemed to encompass every muscle, tendon and ligament in his body. Leaving him a perspiration soaked mess; panting heavily and every inch of his tall and muscular frame trembling.

She’s smiling as she lays her forearm along his collarbone, resting her chin upon it as she peers up at him. “I know you’re okay. But are WE okay?”

“That’s a weird thing to ask considering what we just spent an hour doing.”

“Not exactly the way we should go about apologizing to each other. Isn’t that something we’ve been trying NOT to do? Wasn’t that one of the big things Doctor Klein has been working on us with? NOT using sex for comfort.”

“That’s NOT what we were doing. Maybe an apology here and there, but…”

“You don’t think it’s weird? That we fight and we still resort to making up through sex?”

Smiling, he places a kiss on her forehead and then drops a hand to her lower back; palm flat against her skin, fingertips resting on the cheek of her ass. The other hand slips from her hair and settles between her shoulders; a gentle pressure pulling her tightly into him.

“I’ve always liked this with you,” she says, and places her chin on his chest. A hand resting lightly on the top of his head and her fingers playing with his hair. “The after stuff. Not that I’m saying there’s something wrong with the BEFORE stuff. Because there definitely isn’t. But the after stuff is nice. It always has been. Just being like this with you. Comfortable and relaxed and being in your arms. It’s always where I feel the safest. ALWAYS.”

“None of them ever wanted you to stay the night? Not a single one ever got attached to you? BEYOND sex?”

Wrapping an arm around her shoulders , he rolls over onto his side, effortlessly bringing her with him and then tucking her tightly into his chest. A smile curving his lips and his eyes closing as he buries his face in her hair. “Yup.”

“I’m scared,” she says several minutes later, effectively snapping him out of the beginnings of sleep. Still lying on his side with her body pressed against his; a heavy leg draped over her top thigh and their heads sharing the same pillow.

His fingers find her hair; combing through the dark tresses, palm settling at the nape of her neck. “What are you scared of?”

“That we’re going to end up right back where we were. Before Nathan did what he did. Before you got sucked back into things. Before Australia, even.”

“Babe, either I’m really tired, or you're speaking in riddles. Because I have no clue where you're going with this. Talk to me like I’m a five year old; break it down for me.”

Pulling back to look at him, she lays a hand on the nape of his neck; fingernails lightly scraping against the bottom of his hairline. “Before we moved back, we were still struggling. A LOT. We’d come a long way, but we still weren’t communicating properly and we were keeping things from each other and we were fighting all the time. I HATED it; being that way with you. Loving you so much yet being so frustrated and worried and frightened that we weren’t going to make it. And right now? The way things have been over the past week and a half? I’m starting to get worried that we’re falling back into old habits. And I don’t like it. At all.”

“Neither do I. I hate the thought of it. But I didn’t think things are that bad. I mean, we’re both going through some pretty heavy shit. But I don’t think it’s anything like it was before. Not even close.”

“We’ve been arguing. A lot. Even the kids have mentioned it; that we’re fighting more and it reminds them of how things used to be. The first three? They remember ALL of that. They were there; hearing us argue, watching us be so angry with each other. And it’s done a number on them and I feel so fucking guilty for that. That we didn’t at least try and rein things in. For their sake.”

“Definitely not one of my prouder moments, that’s for sure,” Tyler admits. “All the shit they had to hear; all the times we were mean and horrible to each other. I know I always say I wouldn’t go back in time and fix things because it would fuck everything else up. But THAT? Letting them know just how hard things were? I’d definitely change that.”

“And Addie is terrified that something is going to happen. Between us. She brings it up at least once a day. Asks if we hate each other and if you’re going to go and live somewhere else when we get back home. She’s FIVE. She shouldn’t be worrying about stuff like that.”

“She’s also extremely sensitive. Talk above a certain level and she thinks we’re fighting. I can’t even raise my voice around her. You know what she’s like; how vulnerable she is sometimes.”

“I just hate that she even feels that way. That she’s so worried that things are going to fall apart, I mean, they’re not, right? Going to fall apart?”

“Babe…” his hand slips to her cheek, gently cradling it as he presses a kiss to her lips. “....things are fine. WE’RE fine. I’m not going anywhere. Just because we’re a little on edge and we fight once in a while, doesn’t mean there’s problems. It just means we’re going through some shit and we need to get home and work on things. That’s it. So we argue? Doesn’t mean I don’t want to be with you. That I don’t love you.”

“I just hate it. Feeling like we’re slipping. That things are going back to THAT. And I worry if it slips any further…”

“We’re fine,” he assures her, and kisses her again; lips lingering against hers. “Everything is going to be okay. Nothing we can’t get past. We just gotta stick together. Not let anything or anyone fuck us up. That’s it. United front. Me and you against the world.”

Smiling, she drags her knuckles along the edge of his jaw; bristles of his beard tickling her skin. “Stronger together than we are apart.”

“Always have been. You know who ALSO said that today? Your son.”

“You’re going to have to be more specific. I have four of them.”

“Your oldest one. We had a little talk. After you took off. He brought up that same thing. That we’re stronger if we stick together.”

“He’s definitely been listening. And watching. He’s starting to sound even more like you. In so many different ways.”

“He’s going to be a good man, that kid. No doubt about it.”

“That’s because he has a good man in his life. An AMAZING man. And role model.”

A smirk tugs at the corner of his mouth. “I don’t know about that. That’s pushing it, I think.”

“Think about it,” Esme gently implores. “ TJ remembers what things were like before. How WE were before. When things were so hard and I’m sure it seemed like we hated each other and couldn’t stand to be around one another. He remembers when you left. Six months of his life without you under the same roof. And before you say anything…” She places two fingers against his lips to prevent him from speaking. “...that was in no way a cheap shot against you and I am NOT putting the blame on you. We had a lot of issues and neither of us seemed to want to fix them. But he DOES remember all of that. And now? Now he sees how different you are. How you treat me. He sees how much you love me and respect me and how you’ll do anything to protect me. He IDOLIZES you, Tyler. He wants to be just like you. In every way possible.”

“But I don’t want that for him. To be like me. I want so much more for him.”

“There’s nothing wrong with who you are. I don’t know why you can’t see that. Why you can’t hear the words that are coming out of my mouth. You are NOT a bad person. You've made bad mistakes. We’ve ALL made them. You’re not the monster you think you are.”

“I don’t want him following in my footsteps.”

“Be a mercenary, you mean.”

He nods. “That’s the last thing I want for him. That kind of life. Because the things I’ve seen and heard and the things I’ve had to do? I don’t wish those on anyone. Look what it’s done to me, Esme. And I’m not talking the broken bones or the getting shot or stabbed or any of that shit. I’m talking about what it’s done to me MENTALLY. It has fucked me up. You know that.”

“First off, you are NOT fucked up. You’re flawed. So am I. You don’t love me any less, do you? Because of my issues? My imperfections?”

“These aren’t just small issues. Tiny imperfections. They’re…”

“Do you?” she softly interjects. “Love me any less? Knowing what I struggle with?”

“Of course not. There’s nothing that could make me love you less. NOTHING.”

“And I feel that same way about you. So do your kids. And you know what, I don’t want him in that life either. I don’t want him being a mercenary. But he’s TEN. And all he really thinks about is how cool and exciting it is that dad gets to travel places and kick bad guys’ asses. He’s not thinking about the things the job has done to you. He’s a kid. His mind doesn’t work that way. He was five when you were in the hospital. He probably doesn’t even remember most of it. Especially the worst times. All he knows is that dad goes away and he helps people and sometimes, the bad guys die. It’s just the way it is. That’s all that matters to him. That, and that you come home safe and sound.”

“But there’s so much more to it. So much. And I don’t want him finding those things out first hand.”

“If he keeps going on about it when he’s older, THEN we tell him. Or you tell him. But right now he is still a little boy and his mind romanticizes and glorifies what you’ve done. What you still do. He’ll change his career about a hundred times before he’s eighteen. I know I did.”

“It's just not a life I want for him. For any of them.”

“If the time comes where ANY of them are considering that life, then we do something about it. But right now? They’re all still so young. They have so much time ahead of him. And I wasn’t talking about that; the mercenary side of you. Because you are more than that man. WAY more. You’re a husband and you’re a father and a grandfather. And believe me, those things matter more than you being a mercenary when it comes to your kids.”

“I just want to set a good example. That’s ALL I want.”

“And you ARE setting it. They all see how you are, Tyler. They see how you treat me. How you love me. Respect me. ADORE me. What more could you want for your boys? Do you know that that’s teaching them? Seeing you that way? It’s showing how they should be when they grow up. With their own partners. And that’s huge, babe. HUGE.”

“I guess I never thought about it. I just do it. I just act on how I feel about you. That’s it.”

“And it’s a beautiful thing; when you act on it. They see this big, strong man being so loving and gentle and attentive. What could be better than that, in their eyes? Their dad being that way with their mum? It makes them realize that even the bad asses have a heart. And that’s okay to use that heart. For good.”

“They also see me being an emotional wreck sometimes. So…”

“And there’s nothing wrong with THAT, either. So what? You get emotional. You cry. You’re a human being. Not a machine. And isn’t that we want for our boys? To be strong and protective when they need to, but soft and sweet and caring ALL the time? I know that’s what I want for them. There's so many things I want for them. Things that will make them good men.”

“Am I? A good man?”

“A good man who’s made bad choices and who’s had a hard life. Who’s learned from his mistakes and always tries to fix things and be better. You’re a good man and a great husband and an even better father. Think about what you’re teaching the girls. When they see you emotional. When they see you loving me. It’s showing them what kind of man they should want. That they deserve that kind of love and they should never settle for less. They’ll look for someone like you. And I know you’ll argue and say that’s not a good thing, but it IS. It’s a VERY good thing.”

He nods slowly as he considers her words; blinking back the threatening tears and swallowing noisily around the lump of emotion sitting in his throat.

“You ARE a good man. Regardless of what your brain says. And I hope one day it stops telling you differently.”

“So do I.”

“Baby…” she lays a hand on the back of his head; lips pressing a series of feathery kisses across his forehead and along the top of each eyebrow and down the bridge of his nose. “...I didn’t mean to make you cry. That’s the last thing I wanted.”

“Good tears, Me. All good tears.”

“Does it make you feel better that I think you’re beautiful when you cry? That you do suffering so beautifully?”

“I don’t know if it makes me feel better, but it’s really goddamn weird.”

“I know I don’t say it as often as I should, but I appreciate you SO much. More than you could ever know. Everything you do for me and for us and for our family. That doesn’t go unnoticed. And I love you so much for it. For always getting back up and putting one foot in front of the other simply because we need you to. I know it’s hard; that it takes all the energy you have to keep going some days. But you do it. For us. And you have no idea how much I appreciate that.”

“You know how you say I have a knack of making you cry easily? I think I’m rubbing off on you.”

Smiling, she curls both arms around his neck and presses a kiss to his lips. Eyes sparkling adoringly when she pulls away; searching every inch of his face as her fingers move through his hair. “You’re a beautiful person, Tyler Rake. Don’t ever let anyone or anything tell you otherwise.”

He’s unsure how long they doze for; stirred from sleep by the sound of the bedroom door creaking upon, followed by the clinking of Mac’s metal tags against his leather collar. The mattress swaying and bowing as the dog jumps onto it and curls into a ball at the bottom of Tyler’s feet; laying his head on his front paws and issuing a loud, comical yawn before closing his eyes.

The temperature has dropped; the furnace clicking on and then settling into a low, almost soothing hum. A strong wind rattles the windows; bare tree branches scrapping the glass and tapping against the metal roof. His left arm is asleep; circulation cut off by the weight of his wife’s head resting on his bicep. And despite cautiously slipping it out from underneath her slipping form, she stirs. A groan of protest escaping her lips as she rolls over onto her back with a groan; heels of her palms pressing into her eyes.

“Good back to sleep, baby,” he encourages, and throws back the heavy comforter. “It’s late.”

“I wasn’t fully out of it.” She pushes herself up onto her elbows, frowning as he slips out of bed. “Where you going?”

“Just getting some clothes to put on. We learned that lesson more than once; always put something on BEFORE the kids get up.”

“We’ve encountered a few awkward moments,” Esme admits, then giggles when the t-shirt he tosses her way lands on the top of her head. “Are you okay?” she asks, as she tugs the garment on. “You have pain? Did you have a nightmare?”

“Everything’s fine,” he assures her, then slips into a pair of weathered and tatted plaid pyjama pants he pulls from the dresser. “Just having a hard time sleeping, I guess.”

“Probably everything that went on today. Your brain probably can’t completely shut down. Come back to bed, though. There’s no reason to get up. Just come and lie down and let me cuddle you.”

“Me…” he grins. “...we’ve talked about this.”

“Sorry. Why don’t you come back to bed, lie down, and cuddle ME”

“That’s better.”

Rolling her eyes, she squirms across the wrinkled and rumpled sheets and settles herself -on her side- in her regular spot. Back towards him as he slides into bed behind her; a forearm placed across her pillow and a palm resting against her stomach and pulling her tightly into him. A groan rumbling deep in his chest when she wriggles her ass against him. “You be good,” he warns.

“I wasn’t doing anything.”

“Bullshit you weren’t.”

“I was getting comfortable,” she informs him, and then pushes her fingers through his; their joined hands resting against the fabric of her t-shirt.

“Sure you were.”

“I like this. Being little spoon. It’s my favourite.”

“You’re the perfect little spoon,” he praises, and drapes a leg over hers. “You fit just right.”

“Doesn’t hurt when you’re so big and I’m so small. Do you ever notice the way people look at us? When we’re out in public? When we’re walking down the street together? Holding hands or arms around each other?”

“I’ve noticed. It probably looks cute; tall guy, teeny girl.”

“They’re probably wondering how we ever get things done. Between the sheets.”

“We manage. We don’t have seven kids for nothing.”

“Have you ever considered you’re just incredibly fertile? Or that we both are? That it didn’t take very much to get me pregnant all those times?”

“I’ll have you know that I worked very hard all those five times it happened. I busted out my best moves to put those kinds of smiles on your face.”

“Baby, sex with you is always amazing. Well, there was that one time when you were really drunk and passed out on top of me and…”

“You are NEVER going to let me live that down, are you?”

“Nope,” she laughs. “Never. Especially when Declan was conceived during your drunken escapade. Let’s never tell him that, okay? We don’t need him to have a complex.”

“He already has one. He’s a ginger. That’s enough to give you a complex.”

“Your mother was a ginger,” Esme points out. “He looks just like her. So do you. In some ways. Definitely the shape of your eyes and your forehead and chin. They’re identical. The rest…”

“The rest I get from my old man,” he reluctantly admits. “Yeah, I know.”

“From a physical appearance standpoint, that’s not a bad thing. You happen to be very attractive, husband. Very sexy.”

“Are you saying my dad was sexy?”

“Ewwww. No. God, no. I’m saying you inherited good genes. From a physical standpoint. You are NOTHING like him in other ways. How about we NOT take this conversation any further? Let’s NOT talk about him.”

He presses a kiss to the back of her head. “Good idea.”

“I know what I WANTED to tell you!” She rolls over to face him; his hand falling to the small of her back. “Some very strange things happened to me today. While I was out.”

“Baby, I have been eating at the buffet of strange ALL DAY.”

“Well, consider this the dessert. Guess who showed up? At the diner.”

“Do I really want to know?”

“Natalie. Alone. No kid in sight.”

“She just wandered in out of the blue? Did she follow you there or…?”

“I think this time was a complete coincidence. It’s not a normal place I go to. I specifically went in a direction I don’t usually take because I didn’t want to run into anyone. I wasn’t exactly feeling too social or chatty. But yep, she just wandered in. The waitress knew her. First name basis. So I’m thinking she’s a regular there and it was just a totally random event. For a change.”

“Did she say anything?”

“Not at first. At first she ran off as soon as she saw me. Or tried to. I chased her down. I’d had enough of her shit and I wasn’t letting her off the hook.”

“And I didn’t get a call to come and bail you out of jail?” he chides. “Me, you’re losing your edge.”

“She is insane. Legitimately. That can be the only explanation for the shit that came out of her mouth. She really does think that you two have some kind of connection. That you’re feeling the same way she is. And she’s pretty determined to bust us up and reel you in.”

“That’s never going to happen and you know it. I am perfectly content where I am. She’s just some crazy bitch.”

“A delusional crazy bitch. She tried telling me that you came onto her. At the American Girl store. That you propositioned her. Something about taking a break from the girls and finding a supply closet and…”

“Okay first off, I’d never do something like that. I’m a lot of things, but a cheater isn’t one of them. And even if I was that kind of guy, I sure as hell wouldn’t do THAT. In public. In front of my daughters and my grandkid. She’s fucked. Well and truly fucked.”

“The more I argued with her, the more adamant she became about stealing you away. She’s pretty hot and horny for you, honey. I don’t know…”

“If anything, the thought of her makes my dick shrivel up. In fear.”

“If she had a normally functioning brain, she’d probably be deadly. But she’s just so off the reservation and so delusional that there is no way she’s a threat. Even if she did sort of let on that she is.”

He frowns. “What did she say?”

“Something about how I don’t know who I’m messing with. The usual bullshit someone spouts when they’re called out. They always try to act big and bad. You’ve seen that before; guys trying to step up to you because you’ve threatened their masculinity. I mean, she’s obviously harmless. A bit of a stalker, but…”

“There’s something not right with her. At all.”

“You’re telling me! She’s plain nuts. And I called her out. For lying about TJ. The whole last name thing. Told her if she ever brought my kids into her shit again, I’d go over to her house and drag her out and beat her ass in the middle of the street.”

A grin plays on his mouth. “That’s my girl.”

“I also told her to stay away from you. I don’t appreciate her pissing in my front yard, and I sure as hell don’t share. I don’t know if she'll listen to me, but…”

“Don’t worry about her. She’s obviously not all there. We’ll be leaving in a few days. Won’t have to deal with her for a while.”

“Thank god for that. Any more run-ins with her and I WOULD catch an assault charge and you WOULD be bailing me out of jail.”

“Wouldn’t you want me to leave you there? You might meet some nice lady.”

Scowling, she reaches between their bodies; making him chuckle when she pinches his stomach.

“Don’t be mean,” he dramatically pouts, then pushes her hair behind one ear, then the other. “What’s the second thing? You said a couple weird things happened.”

“This one is so strange it tops anything odd that’s ever happened to me. There was this guy there…”

“I don’t know if I like the start of this…”

“...who looked EXACTLY like Mark. And when I mean exactly, I mean a ninety nine percent match. That’s how much he looked like him.”

His blood immediately runs cold, and he tries his best to hold back any sign of emotion. It’s been years since he’d found out that her first husband was actually still alive; responsible for sending him a handful of voicemails and text messages. Harmless at first. Then becoming very disturbing. “As in your ex Mark?”

Esme nods. “We are talking about his identical twin. If he had one. I swear to God I almost peed my pants. Scared the ever loving shit out of me. That whole saying ‘you look like you’ve seen a ghost’? That was me. I can only imagine what my face looked like. Freaked me out so bad. I honestly thought I’d wet myself."

“Did he say anything to you?”

“Just random chit chat. He held the door open for me. Nothing major.”

“Hmmm…”

“What’s that supposed to mean? Hmmm? What’s there to go ‘hmmm’ about? It’s obviously not him. He’s been dead a long time. Hopefully burning in hell. What’s the look on your face for? Now you look like YOU’VE seen a ghost.”

“It’s not that. I just...wow. I guess it IS true; people do have a twin out there somewhere.”

“Well Mark’s twin is from New Jersey and didn’t seem like a first class asshole. He was pretty friendly, actually. Are you okay? You don’t look so good. I know Mark brings back a lot of bad things, but…”

“I was just thinking how weird that must have been for you. Seeing someone that looked just like him. Considering everything he’d done to you.”

“Oh believe me, the memories all came up at once. I was sort of a wreck for a bit after all. But I mean, he’s dead. He’s hardly a threat. It’s not like people can come back from the grave. It was just really strange. Made me feel some things that weren’t very nice, that’s for sure.”

“You’re okay now though? You’re not still freaking out inside? You’re okay?”

“I was okay as soon as I got home. As soon as I saw you. And I got to be in these big, strong arms of yours.” She runs a palm over his left bicep and triceps; enjoying the feel of soft skin and hard muscle. “I’m fine. It was just really weird. I’m okay now.”

“Good,” he says, and kisses her; the back of her head cradled in his palm as his lips softly and slowly move against hers.

“What a weird ass day, huh?”

“It’s one for the record books, that’s for sure."

“It’s over. That’s all that matters. We dealt with it and we got past it and tomorrow...or today...we start again. We deal with our shit and we get on with things and we don’t let anything break us. Deal?”

“Deal.”

Smiling, she kisses him this time, pushing her fingers through his beard and lightly scraping her nails along his jaw. “We need sleep. Badly.”

“We do,” Tyler agrees, and his lips find her forehead. “I’m sorry, Me. That things were pretty shitty today.”

“None of that matters now. We both apologized and we both know what we need to work on. And we’ll do it together. Like we always do.”

“We will,” he confirms, and she once more turns her back towards him. He reaches around her slender body; palm pressed against her stomach, eyes closing as he buries his face in her hair.

“I love you, Tyler.” Her voice is barely above a whisper. “So much.”

His hold on her tightens. “I love you too, Esme. More than you’ll ever know.”

Heaving a long, content sigh, she nestles her cheek into the pillow and closes her eyes. Body settling and relaxing against his; safe and protected in the confines of his arms. Completely oblivious to the building rage and worry. In the matter of minutes, so many unknowns have taken up residence inside of him; centred around the true nature and reason behind Natalie’s behaviour and the encounter with Mark’s ‘twin from New Jersey’.

Sleep won’t find him. Not tonight.

Cuz you're hitting the jump ahead to 1904 and then I expect 1907 what are your thoughts on John's life between 1899 and 1907? Is that something you plan to change in Sunrise?

Yup, we’ll skip from 1904 to 1907.

I’m still trying to keep Sunrise as canon-adjacent as I can.  Obviously Arthur’s survival definitely affected things for numerous people.  Sadie’s story in particular has turned out to have diverted somewhat from the canon path without her being so closed off and hardened by losing two people she loved in such a short time.  Those ripples are going to continue.

But I’m not changing stuff just for the sake of changing it, so John’s story will likely stay the same in that eight year span with the Marstons in western Canada and/or maybe Alaska. And that’s because while I could see that maybe it didn’t need to stretch out for a full eight years, I reasonably buy the notion that John keeps fucking things up and sending the Marstons on the run again.

Arthur in Sunrise had expressed to Sadie he’s scared shitless by recognizing how deeply unprepared he is for “ordinary” life.  But he’s also a hard worker, broadly skilled, etc.  He has advantages John doesn’t.

It’s noted resentfully by multiple people in camp that John’s spoiled and treated differently.  It’s said that he ran off for a year and Dutch acted like nothing happened.  And it also seems that aside from Abigail and Jack feeling the personal lack of him being involved, the gang itself didn’t seem to miss a step, which implies strongly that John wasn’t exactly an integral day-to-day cog.  Arthur outright notes that he’s the “workhorse” and John the “prize pony”.  Arthur seems genuinely surprised at John coming up with the train robbery plan, beyond ribbing John about his intelligence.  In other words, the impression that comes across strongly is that John was something of a pampered prince among the gang and he certainly contributed sometimes, but he was never expected to get out and hustle on a regular basis the way others were. 

That’s largely Dutch’s influence, I suspect.  He favored John, and there was likely affection there, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t also psychological abuse.  His abuse of Arthur depended on guilt, exploitation of Arthur’s need to please and inability to set boundaries, and generally keeping him insecure and constantly anxious for approval to get everything he could from the man.  I suspect his abuse of John was in encouraging laziness and a certain learned helplessness as his favorite.  That prevents John from becoming nearly as skilled and central to the gang’s workings as Arthur, which, when coupled with John’s much greater natural confidence, would make him a threat to Dutch in a way Arthur isn’t until Chapter 5/6.  The double standard would also tend to isolate John from the others, which helps tone down his potential threat level also.

John in 1899 is a 26-year-old man wholly unprepared to go out and live an independent, law abiding life.  We see that eight years later, he needs to learn basic farm skills.  He admits to not being able to herd to Arthur.  He presumably can handle himself admirably with sidearms, but still has to learn quick-draw dueling in RDR1.  He’s presumably not much of a hunter (I don’t recall seeing his name in the camp book all that often implying that he is, though I could be wrong?) and it seems like he turns readily to Arthur whenever something using a long gun is needed.

He also seemingly hasn’t had boundaries established, like Arthur did after Dutch and Hosea found him (there’s some remark in Arthur’s bio about how he was pretty much a total disaster as an ex-street kid, until he got some discipline and structure).  John, in comparison, seems to have gotten away with a lot, and not been forced to learn most of Arthur’s skills.  And so that lack of preparedness and skills, and the inability to curb his temper, means he’s been dumped out in the real world, told to go make his way, be a man, and he has zero resources with which to accomplish it.  He keeps getting into trouble and dragging Abigail and John with him.  And Abby’s lived a rough life herself.  Neither of them really have anyone to rely upon to help them learn how to live a life different from the transitory violent vagabond one they supposedly left.

Arthur, in comparison, goes into post-1899 with a lot of advantage over John.  He has Sadie as a friend, and then a spouse, who has some notion of an ordinary life.  He has Calderon for encouragement and advice.  He finds others too.  He has the grace period of a year at Las Hermanas in which to try to decompress and just heal psychologically as well as physically.  He also has a much bigger toolbox than John in terms of skills, a better sense of self-discipline (particularly now that he’s seen what his temper can do), a much steadier work ethic, and the resolve of knowing more of the man he wants to be.  

It’s notable that John only gets his shit together when two things happen: he finds the Geddes family, who both believe in him and give him the support to start acquiring the skills and stability he needs, and he also gets a rude awakening when Abigail and Jack leave and he finally understands, like Arthur did after Thomas Downes and his TB diagnosis, that he can’t be the man he was.  Arthur’s coming-of-age and truly becoming a man in his own right is in Chapters 5/6.  John’s answering arc to that is in 1907.

Wynn groaned when she stretched out her arm and touched quick-cooling sheets rather than the warm cocoon that kept her asleep. Morning came much too soon for her liking. She pulled her arm back and tucked it close to her body. She liked winter on principal: she liked how everything slowed down, she liked looking at the snow, and she liked that it brought holidays which put everyone into a better mood. The cold, though, the cold could get fucked. Reggie could spare no expense on his apartment—a birthday gift to himself the minute he turned eighteen—but heat in the morning wasn’t one of them? Honestly! He liked waking up to the cold, he said. Makes him invigorated.

Wynn thought it froze his brain more so than usual because he was dead wrong about that one.

She closed her eyes and eased a breath out her nose when the sound of creaking floorboards got closer to the bed. She sensed a presence above her and cracked an eye open, earning her the sight of Reggie. A second later he pressed a kiss to the side of her head and she smiled at him.

“Sorry, didn’t want to wake you,” he said. His voice, still a sleep-filled rasp, made her heart thrum.

“Then get the floorboards fixed,” Wynn replied, snuggling further into the plush cloud of a pillow beneath her head.

Reggie’s eyes briefly rolled up to the ceiling and he shook his head; a lone strand of hair curled over his forehead. She wasn’t sure how he managed to escape the affliction that was bedhead; even before a shower he looked as if he stepped off the pages of some teen magazine. She, by comparison, tended to resemble Cousin Itt. If she were lucky. Life was cruel sometimes.

“Busy night? You got back late.”

“Not particularly. Pop’s was nearly empty with the snow and all. We just decided to get a head start on inventory.” She yawned and rubbed at her eye. “I hate inventory.”

Reggie reached out and stroked her hair. She hummed a noise of content, a smile blossoming on her face. “Sounds like my girl needs a break.”

“You’re not kidding. Between working and clubs and college applications and getting loan forms looked over and applying for scholarships, I wouldn’t mind hibernating for a while.”

“Well, I told you, if you ever need help for school—” Wynn’s glare cut his sentence off right away and he shrank away from her. He held his hands up, palms facing outwards as if to block any sort of rage she may throw his way. “Okay, sorry. I was just trying to help.”

“Helping me is by not throwing money at me like it’s a problem that’ll go away.”

“I’m not…” Reggie groaned and rubbed his hands across his face. “I’m not throwing money at you.”

“Feels like it.” Wynn rolled onto her back, tucking one arm beneath her head and let the other rest on her stomach. She peered at him through blurry, sleepy eyes. “I want to get into school on my own merit. Not because my boyfriend got me there.”

“You got the grades. You did all the hard stuff. This way you won’t have to get a job wherever you go.”

“Maybe not, though that’s my choice. And besides, I don’t want to be debted to you.”

Reggie’s eyebrow lifted. He crossed his arms and pursed his lips. “Is that what that’s about?” Wynn shrugged and glanced out the window. Fat snowflakes glided past the window. “Wynnie, you’d never be in my debt.”

“Mhm. Because that’s never happened in the history of this country.”

“Wynnie…” Reggie sat on the edge of the bed and took Wynn’s hand in his. “You’re not, like, my charity case. Okay? I like taking care of you but if you don’t want me to I won’t. I just…I want you to know I got your back. If you ever need anything. Ever. Even if it’s just…” he motioned to the space around them, “a place to crash. You’d never be indebted to me. I want you around because you like me, not because you owe me.”

“…I guess you’re okay.” At his incredulous expression she smiled a lazy smile and winked at him.  Voice softening she added, “I appreciate that, though, Reg. Thank you.”

“You’re not gonna be the one following me around, okay. That’s going to be me. I’ll even be the First…Sir? What do they call spouses to male presidents?”

“I like First Dude,” Wynn said. “Speaking of, Mr. Class Pres, you’re going to be late for school.” She reached out and pointed to the digital clock on the nightstand nearest the bathroom, which was surrounded by a few Rolex watches and an empty package of trail mix.

“You’re not coming?”

She snorted. “I’ll go as soon as the weather decides to do the right thing and be warm again.”

“Come shower with me, then.” A crooked smile formed on his lips. “Guarantee you’ll get warm real fast.”

Wynn rolled her eyes and then rolled onto her stomach, pulling the pillow down over her head. “Gotta drag me out of bed first,” she said, her voice muffled. “Good luck with that.”

“Is that a challenge?”

“Sure.”

Reaching behind his head. Reggie grabbed at the collar of his shirt and tugged it off him. He tossed it aside and then jumped onto the bed, laughing at Wynn’s ensuing shriek. He rolled her over and leaning down, kissing her before she could protest. He traced his hand up the back of her hair and curled his fingers in her bedhead, earning himself a groan from her.

He was the first to pull away and smiled innocently when her eyelids fluttered open. “Don’t forget…” he leaned close to her ear and whispered, “I never lose a challenge.” With ease, he lifted her out of bed and held her over his shoulder, ignoring her halfhearted cries of it being too cold to be up and carried her into the bathroom.

Bagginshield headcanon fic: wedding ring gemstones

Gemstones are not required in Dwarven rings, but they are common enough that they’re worth considering when the king smiths a ring for his consort. If there is a gemstone, it must perfectly suit the future wearer like the rest of the design. Everyone agrees that it’s an important part of the courtship process and should take as long as needed to complete. But Thorin hates deliberating as much as he does. He is dissatisfied with his uncertainty as he scours over the vast stores of jewels that have been harvested and cut, mostly before Erebor’s fall. Gems never fade in quality from just lying in untouched, moldering carts. As the physical and cultural structures of the kingdom are restored, many returning folk are eager to exercise their crafts, including the jewelers and gem cutters. Thorin is more than pleased for them, but he’s also anxious about making good use of the functioning workshops to hunt down the appropriate stone for his future husband’s ring.

“I doubt Hobbits care much about the meanings behind them,” Balin says after a couple months of fruitless, frustrated searching. “Bilbo certainly doesn’t care. He’ll appreciate whatever you make him.”

Bilbo’s Hobbit nature and only burgeoning knowledge of Dwarven customs is no excuse for laziness. But Thorin does know when too much fretting tips his efforts into self-defeat--eventually. In time, he lets other duties distract him. The matter sits for nearly a month. The respite untangles the complications he’s made out the issue. It shouldn’t be so difficult to decide if a ruby or an emerald or a sapphire or a diamond deserves to sit on his beloved’s finger.

Like most personal matters, it comes down to one essential question. What truly reflects Bilbo’s character and importance to him? There’s an obvious answer--no one gemstone could capture the breadth of Thorin’s feelings or Bilbo’s beauty in heart and spirit.

The real answer comes in two parts.

Thorin sometimes seeks reflective solitude in the Hall of Kings. The reason might seem obvious, but in fact it has only partly to do with the statues of Thror and Thrain now at the far end of the room. It isn’t comfort but a sobering reminder that grounds him. There’s still the gold on the floor. Removal might be possible, but it would be an extensive process, one not presently demanding urgency. Silver might be a welcomed change to better match the white light falling from high above between Thorin’s father and grandfather.

The Arkenstone, he decided shortly after the battle for Erebor, should not return to the throne. Some Dwarves questioned this, naturally. Was it not his goal to reclaim it with the very throne it once adorned? In another state of mind, Thorin would want nothing less than to have the gleaming jewel above his gold-wreathed head. That gives him strong reason to resist the desire. And he does believe, with encouragement from all the Company, that the Arkenstone does not make him the King Under the Mountain. Even Dain has relented and promised his full support if any Dwarf lords make a stink about it. So the Arkenstone stands guard above Thorin’s predecessors. It feels more and more right. It isn’t his jewel. It belongs to his family. It will forever shine on this proud legacy, and it will forever recall to Thorin the dangers that sprout from unchecked pride in that legacy, and from the desperation to meet its merit. In this very room, Thorin nearly lost himself, and he found himself again. In the piercing, unforgiving reflection of the gold floor, he heard the voice that brought him back.

“Hello.”

A gasp leaves him even as he recognizes the speaker. A playful apology comes as Thorin turns to meet him.

“Hard not to give you a start when you’re in one of your reveries, though,” Bilbo continues. “If I get through to you at all.”

Thorin smiles. “You manage, somehow.”

“I do hope so.” He soon has Thorin’s arm in his hold, almost like he’s anchoring him so Thorin doesn’t slip into the past. “Is there anything you wish to discuss?”

By reflex, Thorin thinks he means matters about Erebor’s reconstruction. A list of topics runs through his head before he knows better. He sweeps a look around the room before answering. “I’m not troubled, exactly. But I’m still ... anxious, I suppose.”

“About anything in particular?” Bilbo offers to give him some direction. He’s patient, knowing, calm and steady.

“Many things,” Thorin admits with a scratchy laugh. Bilbo’s mild reprimand in his tilting head is answered with a raised eyebrow, followed by a more sincere half-smile. “If I’m a little anxious, I take that as a sign I’m doing the best I can to be worthy of this crown.”

Bilbo brushes some hair underneath that crown--silver and more understated than its predecessor--before giving one of Thorin’s braids a gentle tug. “You’re allowed to be king and be at peace, you walnut.”

“You’re living proof of that,” Thorin teases.

“Hah. I’ll turn your whole head gray in a couple years.”

“Then it will match my crown.”

With a frown that tries to be truly annoyed, Bilbo grips the large hand that makes his own dainty in comparison. One of Thorin’s rings catches the soft light from the Arkenstone. Bilbo regards it with unsettled feelings. Thorin follows his sight-line and waits for him to speak.

“Up there, it looks rather pleasant,” Bilbo delivers dryly.

“I agree,” Thorin says, more lighthearted. “Like one of the stars that Durin the Deathless saw above his head when he awoke.”

Bilbo hums and absently strokes Thorin’s fingers, utterly unaware. Thorin’s pulse jumps a little happily at the chance to watch his beloved in his own reverie. His pensive scowl pulls at the lines of his face but brings out the strength of his stare. Such a stare, full of depths Thorin would never have seen in that cozy, warm domicile Bilbo once called home.

His thoughts run in a few directions. Perhaps there and then they realize they’ve hit on a gem of an epiphany. Consciously, though, Thorin only thinks of Bilbo’s dark, lovely eyes, then of the Arkenstone with radiance that’s both divine and deceptive.

Two days later, Thorin is taken by the inclination to visit the gem cutters’ workshop again. He warns himself not to look for anything in particular. If Mahal wishes it, the answer will make itself known. It might help being preoccupied by the most recent diplomatic meeting with Bard and his advisers from Dale. They still have much to negotiate, especially the pricing of goods on both sides. Bilbo threw in his own opinion, that they should err on the side of generosity. A fine sentiment for Hobbits, many Dwarf lords said, not entirely kindly, but they could not be expected to adopt Hobbit customs.

Dwarves are who they are, and they value their crafts very highly. Mahal instilled this love of precious metals and stones and the desire to fashion them into the most beautiful workmanship. It would be wrong to deny this simply to appease to a neighboring kingdom. Yet Thorin reflects on what the opposite extreme can effect. He recalls his own words when he was certain death was upon him: If more people valued home above gold, this world would be a merrier place.

No, Dwarves are not Hobbits. But he, a Dwarven king, loves a Hobbit and has learned much from him. Wisdom and courage, blended in measure. He will find some fair measure with these trade deals. Yes, even with the Elves of Mirkwood, Durin help him.

These thoughts tread through his mind as he treads through the workshop, attentive enough not to be in the way of the laborers so devotedly engrossed in their work. Not but a minute or two after his musings have moved on from the above point, a box of black gems snatches his eye. Not the blackness itself, but what catches the light within it. Thorin’s heart jumps. His feet stop. He respectfully but intently leans over the shoulder of the Dwarrowdam. She’s holding one of the gems, and he asks her about them. She has only to answer a few questions before he knows he’s found the answer. He wonders if he’s known for even longer.

Thorin asks Bilbo for a private audience almost a week later. They meet in the Hall of Kings, beside one of the pillars so they will not be surprised by anyone. He will make a formal presentation when the ring meets Bilbo’s entire approval. Custom allows any dwarf to consult the wishes of his spouse-to-be once a prototype is made. Bilbo, ever practical, insists that he does not demand perfection, that it matters more for Thorin to not lose sleep over an impossible ideal. Thorin nods, wise enough to respect his good sense while determined to take whatever pains necessary to please him. Still, he didn’t resist placing the ring in a little box and having Bilbo open it. For all his repeated assures that alterations can be easily done, Bilbo doesn’t pay it mind. He’s too busy gaping for close to a minute before even saying a word. That has to be a first.

“It’s stunning!” he finally proclaims. He fixes a narrowed eye on the stone. “I’ve never seen a jewel like this.”

“I’d quite forgotten it myself,” Thorin says. He scoops up Bilbo’s other hand and leads him to the middle of the hall so the light can dance on the stone. Another gasp leaves Bilbo. He sees now what Thorin saw in the gem-cutters’ workroom. When he holds the ring at a favorable angle, any light--from torch or lantern or starry jewel high above--the heart of the black deep flares into a rainbow.

“It’s a black opal,” Thorin says.

“Goodness! It’s quite mysterious. Why did you choose it?”

“The gemstone represents the character of the wearer and what he means to the giver.”

Bilbo smiles with a little mischief. “So this is how you see me? I must be quite the enigma.”

“In many ways, you remain so, and I cherish it.” Thorin needs only one hand to cup Bilbo’s wrist, but holds the ring-bearing hand with both of his. “At first, a black opal may appear to be a simple black stone. When we first met, you were, to me, just as plain and inscrutable. I underestimated your worth. But in time, and often in my darkest moments, your brilliance and beauty shined through.”

“Oh,” Bilbo grumbles, trying not to appear moved, though he swallows and struggles to hold Thorin’s gaze.

Thorin likes his Hobbit brash, yet it’s all the more satisfying when he is bashful, and grumpy over being bashful. But he has hopes for yet another reaction. “Look at the inscription inside the band,” he says.

Bilbo slips off the ring. Indeed, there are runes carved in a minute hand. He has studied runes enough to read them. These translate into Westron, so it does not take long for him to glean the message.

“For my ... greatest treasure, a light ... oh. A light ...” The words stop up Bilbo’s throat, no matter how he tries to clear it.

“For my greatest treasure,” Thorin says smoothly. He doesn’t need to read the words. “A light in the darkness.” He keeps holding and faintly brushing Bilbo’s fingers. “So, what do you think?”

Bilbo blinks, slightly shakes his head, still wrapping it around what he’s been given. He tries to hold the reins of his facial expressions, and does it fairly well. That’s why Thorin nearly falls forward when Bilbo grabs his collar and drags him down into a kiss. 

“Forget what I said about not wanting perfection,” he mutters after a long wordless embrace.

Thorin doesn’t doubt that anyone passing anywhere near the Hall of Kings can see him being claimed in another kiss. Any worries about propriety, witnesses and modifications can wait.

Orphaned Lioness: Hailing from the Near Eastern capital city of Thavnair, Radz-at-Han, she was the only daughter of the renowned gladiator Alyrsthal Sunnkoelsyn, who had won a lot of tournaments in the bloodsands. One of these duels he lost was against a pugilist named Lihtkoena Sylbtyrnwyn, and despite the spectacular defeat, Alyrsthal felt quite the attraction towards his rival. Soon after, he and Lihtkoena formed a battle duo, and this in turn made a romance bloom. They married a year after their first duel, and few months later Lihtkoena got pregnant. Unfortunately, these events happened during an escalation of tensions in the borders of Thavnair with the Garlean Empire, and several skrimishes broke out. After their daughter, whom they named Wyznloef, was born, Alyrsthal and Lihtkoena joined the Hannish forces as mercenaries to make some money to sustain their family, and so they left little Wyznloef in a wet nurse’s care.

The conflict favored the Hannish side, but in one of the skrimishes in which Alyrsthal and Lihtkoena took part, the imperials deployed magitek weaponry, and both died along the rest of their unit. So their daughter Wyznloef was left an orphan and was raised by her wet nurse, who was barely able to feed both of them. When Wyznloef was only ten summers old, her guardian died from an illness, and she found herself truly alone and forced to survive in the streets and slums of Radz-at-Han.

Life in Radz-at-Han: It was a hard life, but young Wyznloef learned to survive in the underworld of the city. She stole and did some dirty work, and because of this she earned some reputation around the slums not only of Radz-at-Han, but of close towns. She was a very tall, imposing young woman, and because of this when she was fourteen she began offering her services as a mercenary; however, Wyznloef chose a very different weapon than her parents, and began honing her skills as an archer.

It was not the only way Wyznloef made some money, though. She was a very sexually active individual, and so began offering her services as a prostitute in the taverns of the slums of Radz-at-Han. And she was good at this, because she had some natural attractive for both men and women, and her bed prowess soon became very well known. All of this combined, being a skilled mercenary and a very professional prostitute, made her earn many names, the most popular being Wyznloef the Lioness, and comparisons to lions ended up with her picking up the nickname “Leona”.

As years went on, Leona’s name as a mercenary was well known enough that she no longer needed prostitution to earn money, but she kept doing it the same way but for free, choosing whom she would take to bed. It was not a bad way of life, yet Radz-at-Han was turning too small for someone like her. She wanted to travel the world and become a renowned archer and adventurers, inspired by the bards who came to the taverns.

At twenty-four summers old, Leona had saved enough money to travel to Eorzea, where she knew of the Archers’ Guild of the Gods’ Quiver of the city-state of Gridania. She wanted to train further in her chosen weapon and receive proper instruction, and so achieve fortune and glory as an adventurer. And so she boarded a ship bound to Eorzea and traveled by carriage to the Twelveswood.

Way of the Bard: Though an inusual discipline amongst Hellsguard Roegadyn, Leona would soon shine amongst the recruits of the Archers’ Guild. In a society like Gridania’s, she had to keep her habits in check, much to her chagrin. But it proved worthy when she was chosen to ask the legendary Jehantel the Godsbow, a master of archery turned bard. Leona had always had her own sensitivity for music, and this caught Jehantel’s attention and accepted to teach her in the ways of the bard and high archery.

While learning from Jehantel, Leona also left the Archers’ Guilds and became a full-fledged adventurer. She would soon become known wherever she went, for both reasons that made her famous in her homeland.

She spent the three following years after coming to Eorzea traveling, honing her skills and bedding people, as was her wont. Leona was beholden to none, but in the wake of the Eorzean Alliance’s offensive to retake Ala Mhigo from the Garlean Empire she heard that the Scions of the Seventh Dawn were recruiting adventurers gifted with the Echo for the campaign. As she was not prone to refuse a good fight and adventure, Leona answered the call and journeyed to Gyr Abania to join her new comrades in the unit formed under the command of the Warrior of Light. The night of her arrival to Rhalgr’s Reach, Leona slept with another adventurer, a Highlander woman by the name of Joana Strome, unaware that she was also one of the chosen for the unit. When they found out the next day, Leona considered it a fun incident, though she resolved it would never happen again, as she believes those kind of relationships only sour teamwork, and that is why she never tried to seduce any of her other comrades. Despite the “incident” as she called it, she stroke a close friendship with Joana, and together with her companions they journeyed with the Warrior of Light to liberate Doma and Ala Mhigo, and stood with her during the following crisis, including the Battle of the Ghimlyt Dark.

A Song of Light and Dark: After the Call to the First in order to restore Darkness in the shard, Leona became one of the Guardians of Darkness. She would follow X’wyhn Lehn, now the Warrior of Darkness, in their new purpose. The prospect of traveling to a whole new world thrills her, and she is eager to learn about the First and all the promises and experiences that await her there.

HI, I am turning 17 in november, and already looking at cars. The cars i am looking at are getting insurance at over 5000 (im male) a year fully comp! The car is only like 2500..... The thing is i will barely use my car as i live really close to school, so will walk all weekdays - especially as i am banned from parking in school as i live too close. WHAT IS A PARADOX

A paradox is a statement that contradicts itself or a situation which seems to defy logic. That's a simple definition of paradox.

Often premises can be proven false which rectifies the contradiction. Sometimes they are just play on words, however, some paradoxes still don't have universally accepted resolutions.

1. LIAR PARADOX (EPIMENIDES PARADOX)

This is a well known paradox written by the great stoical logician Chrysippos. The poet, grammarian and critic Philetus of Cos was said to have died of exhaustion attempting to resolve it.

1 A Cretan sails to Greece and says to some Greek men who are standing upon the shore: "All Cretans are liars." Did he speak the truth, or did he lie?

The Paradox of Choice

One of the biggest dogma runs like this:

If we want to maximize our happiness, the best way to achieve it is to maximize our freedom.

That is because freedom is in and of itself something valuable, worthwhile and essential to every single one of us. It sounds logical.

When we have freedom, we can use it to do things that maximize our happiness, we’re not taking orders from anyone, and no one needs to make decisions on behalf of us. And the way to maximize freedom is to maximize choice. Most people want to make more money not because they want the cold hard cash, but money actually brings more freedom to our life.

The more choices we have, the more freedom we have. The more freedom we have, the happier we are. No one is ever questioning this.

The top goals most people have today are certainly not job security nor stable relationship and happy family. Most people want to have more freedom to choose how they spend their life in their own term.

Indeed, we are bombarded by endless choices today:

• There are more than hundred of degree programs up to choose from a wide range of colleges and university nowadays.

• Our smartphones come with billions of applications up to download.

• We have hundreds different type of salad dressing when we walk into the grocery store.

All of them should make us happier since more choice means a happier life. This belief is heavily and deeply embedded in our day to day life. But does more choice really lead to more happiness?

The Negative Side of More Freedom

I’m not suggesting that more choice and freedom are bad to us. There is no argument on how more choice changes our world positively, and we all knew how more freedom brings us more happiness in the personal level.

So, let’s dive right into the negative impacts of more choice brings to us.

(1) Too many choices produce procrastination and paralysis.

Just imagine what would happen if Apple actually launches 100 different models of iPhone in a year. The sales will definitely drop, why? Because there are too many models to choose, it makes it incredibly hard to make a decision and actually picks one.

The problem of it is not about the iPhone’s quality here, but the hassle customers need to go through to make the right choice. The more choice we have, the harder for us to choose. And most people will simply walk away due to the difficulty in making a decision.

The best example is a big majority of startup failures. Most startup failures aren’t caused by the lack of resources or market size, but the lack of focus of the founding team. Smart people with great ideas and endless resources have more choice, which is not always a good thing. In this case, more choice produces procrastination and distractions to focus on the most important matters at the moment.

(2) The opportunity cost leads to comparison and dissatisfaction.

Now, you have 5 oranges to choose from, one of them is the best orange you will ever have in this world. And this is the only chance for you to have that, if you miss it, you will never be able to get your hand on the world’s tastiest orange in your lifetime ever. How is that make you feel?

More choice produces higher expectation to each and every option you have. We now know there is a world’s tastiest orange out of the five, but our brain will assume all the five are the tastiest. Even if we don’t think so, rationally and logically, we assume we will pick the tastiest one, and we can’t accept anything less than that.

But even if you’re incredibly lucky to pick the best, you might think it’s not perfect, because you can never know how the other four oranges taste like. The opportunity cost of the other oranges leads to dissatisfaction in us. This happened a lot in many areas of our life. Some people will think their spouse is not the best because there is always a better one, even their spouse is actually the best for them.

Eliminate Options and Choices

The more choice we have, the higher our expectation to every choice. The higher the expectation, the harder for us to choose. After we make a decision, we compare our choice with the other alternatives and assume what we have is somehow less attractive, even our choice is the best choice we can make.

The solution to this problem is clear. We first need to break the dogma we believe in so much. More choice does lead more happiness to a certain point, but it’s never linear; more choice after that point, it’s clear that we become more miserable.

We should trim down the choices we have by focusing on the most important thing. Here are a few examples you can implement into your daily life now.

• Focus only on one business idea or career goal, put in all your effort and time to build that up first, before you hop to the next one.

• Remove the other productivity app in your smartphone, you only need one. In fact, you need a pocket-sized notebook and a pen.

• Be content with what you have and who are already with you, appreciate your marriage, make an effort to see the good in your spouse and focus on giving, not receiving.

• Set only one fitness goal, you can’t build mass, cut fats, boost strength, improve endurance, and train for mobility all together at the same time.

• Niche down your targeted market when you’re crafting your marketing campaign. So you can provide what your customers really need, and talk to them using their language.

If you have made a choice before – for your career, relationship, or finance, focus on the choice you had already made. Stop comparing your decision with other alternatives. Instead, focus on what you decided before and make the best out of it.

中国近代最主要的两大矛盾：1、外国侵略者和中华民族的矛盾；2、封建主义和人民大众的矛盾。这两对主要矛盾及其斗争贯穿整个中国半殖民地半封建社会的始终，要弄清两对矛盾之间的关系，要把握以下几点：

1. “矛盾”典故的由来

“矛盾”这个典故出自《韩非子.难一》：楚人有鬻矛与盾者，誉之曰：“吾盾之坚，物莫能陷也。”又誉其矛曰：“吾矛之利，于物无不陷也。”或曰：“以子之矛，陷子之盾，何如？”其人弗能应也。在中国能够数得上家喻户晓的故事，“矛盾”这个典故肯定是当仁不让的。

2. “contradiction”能否被翻译为“矛盾”这个问题的由来

西方逻辑学（Logic）有三条基本定律：同一律（the law of identity）、矛盾律（the law of contradiction）和排中律（the law of excluded middles）。“contradiction”能否被翻译为“矛盾”这个问题，笔者最早是从被誉为日本思想大师小室直树所著的《给讨厌数学的人--数学的奥秘&生活》一书中知晓的。小室直树在书中从“矛盾”典故中提出两个命题：[1]

命题 A：这支矛可以刺穿任何的盾

命题 B：这块盾可以抵挡任何的矛

“正如韩非子所说的，命题A和B不可能同时皆为真。但是，命题A和命题B可以均为假”。

3. 讨论

这个问题，笔者向所带的大三本科生和一些老师介绍的时候，他们一方面露出吃惊的表情，另外一方面也有一些人迷惑不解。笔者在此顺着小室直树先生的观点，做一番较为详细的解释。

3.1 西方逻辑学（Logic）中“contradiction”的含义

设有 命题 A和命题 B。如果命题 A和命题 B满足如下条件，那么，就称命题 A和命题 B之间的关系是“contradiction”：

(1) A = true, B = false;

(2) A = false, B = true

从上两个表达式可以合理推论出，如下（3）、（4）两个表达式是不可能成立的：

(4) A = false, B = false

3.2 “矛盾”典故中“矛盾”��含义

采用小室直树先生从“矛盾”典故中抽取的两个命题：

命题 A：这支矛可以刺穿任何的盾

命题 B：这块盾可以抵挡任何的矛

当“以子之矛，陷子之盾，何如？”真的发生的时候，会出现如下两者情况：

(1)矛能够刺破盾

这种情况只能证明 命题B = false，但是不能证明 命题 A = true。说明这点很简单。假如盾是白纸做的，一根竹签就可以刺穿盾。显然，竹签不会是世上最锋利的矛。

(2)盾可以抵挡住矛

这种情况只能证明 命题 A = false，但是不能证明 命题 B = true。说明这点，同样简单。假如矛是茅草做的，即使盾是白纸糊的，这种矛也是刺不穿这种盾的。总之，不论是上面哪种情况，都无法实现当一个命题为假的时候，另外一个命题必然为真。

从上面的讨论可以看出，“矛盾”故事中的“矛盾”，不是logic中的“contradiction”。

小室直树先生还在其著作中介绍，受“矛盾”这种中国哲学的影响，日本人在赠予财产处理方面，与美国人是大相径庭。在明治维新之前，日本人向下辈赠予财产是可以反悔的，而美国人是不能反悔的。为什么两国对于财产赠予的处理反差这么大的呢？小室直树先生认为欧美的私人所有权的特性是：“(1) 私人所有权就是对个人所有物具有全面且绝对的支配权；(2) 私人所有权的存在是观念性、逻辑上的决定”。换句话说：小室直树先生认为，正是西方逻辑学的这种“contradiction”，导致西方私人所有权具有“神圣不可侵犯”的特征，从而催生出了现代资本主义。与此对应的是，日本人因为接受了中国的“矛盾”而非西方的“contradiction”，导致日本一直无法建立具有“神圣不可侵犯”的私人所有权，从而日本无法诞生现代资本主义[2]。直到后来日本人选择“脱亚入欧”，才解决了中国“矛盾”哲学对于日本人步入现代文明社会的困扰。

鉴于逻辑一词和很多其它汉语词汇都是从日语词汇中“反哺”过来的，因此，将西方逻辑学中的“contradiction”翻译成为“矛盾”，很有可能也是出自日本学者之手。中国学者引进逻辑学的时候，对于“contradiction”也没有仔细推敲，导致对逻辑学最核心和最基本的概念的误解，一直流传至今。其实，“矛盾”典故中的“矛盾”，在西方逻辑学中属于“opposite”（对立），而不是“contradiction”。在唐朝的时候，日本人还是中国人的学生，但是，现在日本人在科学和技术方面的水平，中国与之相比还有相当大的距离。究其原因，从日本学者和中国学者对待“contradiction”正本清源的态度和具体做法，就可以“一叶知秋”了。

笔者最初从小室直树先生的著作了解到这个问题的时候，当时还是非常震惊的。因为，笔者在所受的二十多年的教育过程中，任何一位大中小学老师从未提及过这个问题，中国的各种教育家、数学家写的文章和编写的教科书，都从未涉及到这个问题。可以说，包括笔者在内的中国人，一直被蒙蔽着。不过，那个时候笔者以为是翻译者的问题，没有意识到是汉语本身的问题：汉语现有的词汇中，包括“矛盾”这个词汇在内，没有一个词汇能够完整准确表达“contradiction”在逻辑学（logic）中的含义。

亲爱的读者朋友，如果你明白和同意“逻辑学是所有学问的基石”这个观点的话，看到逻辑学（logic）中的核心概念和思想，无法用汉语准确表达的时候，那么，你还会对汉语像现在这样留恋的吗？

亲爱的读者朋友，如果你渴望和追求自由、民主与法治的现代化文明，知道了中国“矛盾”思维对于建立真正私有产权的巨大阻碍，那么，你还会对汉语像现在这样留恋的吗？

中国的数学及科学事业及成就不说比肩欧美，就是与“挥之不去”的近邻日本相比，其差距也是巨大的。除了众所周知的政治体制、科学体制等体制方面的原因外，更深层次的原因就是祖宗遗产之一汉语带来的巨大阻碍。试想，所有学问的基石“contradiction”都无法用汉语准确表达，我们中国人用汉语学习现代数学及科学怎么可能比肩欧美人的呢？

汉语在现代数学及科学方面的表述缺陷，用笔者老家乡里话说就是“不过窍”。意思是做某件事情，不能将其做得非常好的原因，是对这件事情的原理没有掌握透彻导致的。有软件工程知识和经验的人都会知道，软件系统的bug，如果不去发现和改正，那么，这个bug将会永远存在于软件系统之中，不会自己改正。自然语言从抽象意义上讲，也是一个应用软件。自然语言存在的bug，我们不去发现和纠正，那么，这个bug一样永远存在于自然语言系统之中。这一点，正如“太祖”所言：“扫帚不到，灰尘不会自己跑掉”。

4. 结论 

对于“contradiction”能否被翻译成为“矛盾”这个问题的答案是否定的。

正如眼下的改革被视为新长征一样，那么，现在也到了对汉语进行第二次新文化运动的时候了！如果改革新长征缺乏对汉语的进一步改革，那么，改革新长征一定会被夭折！被夭折的原因不是什么“亡我之心不死的海外反华势力”，也不是什么“地富反坏右”或“走资派”，而是祖宗的遗产之一—汉语！悲乎！
