This is really cheesy but sometimes it feels like a show comes your way just at the perfect time. I felt that way with Nevertheless, Start-Up, Twenty-Five Twenty-One, and Thirty-Nine. Now I feel it with Doctor Slump

I really love it when there's a trio of female friends in dramas. It's so central to Work Later, Drink Now. Also central to Thirty-Nine. And the friendship in 'King the Land' isn't central to the plot, but it is heartwarming nonetheless.

One of the best K-dramas of the year, "Queenmaker" is the latest superb female-centric series led by women in their 40s and 50s. It is fast-paced and nail-bitingly good. A political thriller with plenty of twists and turns, it centers on two foes who unite to take down a corrupt chaebol family that will stop at nothing to protect their financial and familial interests.

Thirty-Nine - 10/10
What did you do on your Labor Day weekend? Well I watched this K-drama and sobbed on my couch with snot running down my face. Holy shit. It's been a while since a piece of media got to me like this. But in addition to just a heart wrenching story, the performances by the female actresses who play the leads were uniformly brilliant and emotional.
The drama centers on three best friends who are, as the title implies, 39 years old. They met as high schoolers and have become staples in each others' lives. They are: Chan-young the acting coach, Mi-jo the dermatologist, and Joo-hee the manager of a department store cosmetics counter. When one of them receives a devastating health diagnosis and is given less than a year to live, their lives are turned upside down. How do they balance navigating grief, living their own lives, and working to make sure their best friend is the happiest terminally ill person?
While all the female leads have their love interests (and like, not all the love interests are bad - I think Mi-jo's romance in particular is well done), the true soulmates of this show are Mi-jo and Chan-young. Like idk, imo, they're each other's person. Their love for each other is the heart and soul of the show. While those two create the center of the show and sometimes it seems like Joo-hee is an after thought, the three women and the depths of their friendship was incredibly moving. If all of us could be so lucky to have people in our lives like that.
In spite of the 10/10 rating (which I normally reserve for comfort watches which... this is decidedly NOT), I did have a not insignificant issue with one character. Namely.... Chan-young's love interest, Jin-seok. He's a real flop. Like idk... he doesn't commit to divorcing his wife and being with Chan-young (thus basically leading to Chan-young wasting her 30s on him) because of his kid. And then when he finally DOES divorce his wife, he's like "Ju-won who? idk him." and seems to not give a fuck that is wife is taking Ju-won and moving to England. Like???? You wasted Chan-young's time for a decade over something that turns out you didn't care that much about???? k....
Whatever, at least Mi-jo's love interest doesn't suck! Seon-woo is great! Supportive and understands that his girlfriend's soulmate is her best friend. (lol I'm kidding, a bit) For real though, he is great and the way his character adds depth and nuance to Mi-jo's adoption storyline is really good. So I guess I'll forgive how much Jin-seok sucks.
