do you think that cvd/ shondaland lowkey expected Ruby to be like flo and will and only work/ film bridgerton and be at their back and call? bc age-wise she was always grouped with them even tho she’s 7yr older (other sib were all in their late 20s/30s - so they HAD to give them something almost bc they wouldve been disinterested/ would look elsewhere) whereas ruby was in a weird limbo place in between place age/ work credit/ experience wise.
Bc they gave her literally no material and girl can act and i feel like thats why she looked elsewhere for more promising roles/ screen time! bc her films almost all of them were really well recieved/ well acted (e.g una/ rocks/ a banquet - not as big as the other two/ some love-hate reception)
i think they underestimated the actor/ her ambition, thus all this misfortune unfolded! And shondAland doesnt look good when it comes to actors sudden departure - despite her other work obligations... bc we all know shondaland has a big/ bad history with power struggles, particularly ones that dif in opinion with shonda rhimes!
also really appreciated ur take on the weird famdom reacrion about the frannie recast situation and ur defense of the actors! lowkey read my mind woth every post/ question!
Hey Anon thank you so much for this thoughtful ask!
I can definitely see that happening! Shondaland/CVD probably expected that when they casted the kiddos that they'll have the "Be grateful for this opportunity it will open doors for you once we are done" mindset.
I think Will and Flo, being their age and due to child labour laws in the industry, have limits on how many hours they can work so they could focus only on Bridgerton.
While Ruby is 20 (18 when she filmed S1 if I'm not wrong) so she had more flexibility with her time to do two productions at the same time. Also they weren't giving her scenes so of course she's going to seek other roles as well where she can showcase her talents!
You're so right about her films being well received! That's why I had to watch them when I found out about them. Speaking of, if you or anyone who sees this post have links to Ruby's films please do send them my way! I got an ask about that and am trying to compile a list of legal or otherwise links for people to watch her stuff while we wait for Lockwood and Co to air. I need people to see her starpower! (Lol of course Banquet had mixed reactions, horror always does but I liked it and usually horror scares me ahahah)
Also I'm sure her contract and agents were all in open communications with the Bridgerton team beforehand so either productions could have easily shifted around their schedules to accommodate her role for the respective seasons. Bridgerton moreso than the indie films cos it's a mainstream show and Shondaland is at the helm. They definitely have more power within the industry between the two productions Ruby was in for both seasons and could have given some leeway for Ruby to come and film Fran's storyline in S2.
As for the actors leaving, you're so so right! Shondaland has a l o n g history of blacklisting people who dare stand up against the higher ups and also having toxic work environments on set (See: Katherine Heigl and Greys 👀) so maybe it's for the best Ruby got out when she did. I only hope the Lockwood executive team treats her and the rest of the cast and crew better!
Lastly, thanks so much for the appreciation anon! It means a lot cos I've been starting feeling like I'm in the vocal minority advocating for Ruby as Frannie while trying to be fair on Hannah. Even saw a couple of pointed vagueposting anons about some of my and some friends' posts. I've been trying not to let it get to me but I promise most of the info I've been writing in my posts are based on my experiences and what I've learnt from film school. And hey once I'm in the industry and some stuff are wrong I'll gladly eat my words. But for now we'll never know what happened behind the scenes and we can only speculate based on what we know!
So all in all, I'm glad you liked my posts and I was able to provide opinions that voiced out some of your thoughts on the whole recasting ordeal :)

<iframe allow="autoplay" width="100%" height="200" src="https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-bridgerton-the-official-p-77492332/episode/peneloise-nicola-coughlan-and-claudia-jessie-81858408/?embed=true" frameborder="0"></iframe>
Claudia a bit short of breath when she joined the zoom call bc she had to move her boat. She said she got it filled w/ diesel.
Nicola & Claudia were the first actors cast. Nicola was the first one cast in April 2019 & Claudia was the next one cast.
Claudia & Nicola met briefly prior to Bridgerton through the comedy show, Porters (one of NC’s best friends was one of the writers). NC basically stalked Claudia bc she really wanted to be friends w/ her
Claudia, as we all know, is anti-social media. But she would look up Nicola online to see what she’s up to. Nicola would do really romantic things, like post a bday message for Claudia in case she goes online (I found this extremely sweet). Claudia said Nicola has done this a few times. It’s like finding a treat.
Nicola sends Claudia memes all the time. Claudia doesn’t know what a meme is (adorable 😁). Nicola likened her to a grandma, telling her what the youngsters are doing on the internet
Nicola and Claudia LOVE Peneloise fan art. Nicola sends them to her and her mom all the time. They appreciate the time people take & what the characters mean to people
Nicola said she gets messages from people telling her they’re mad at Penelope for doing this (I think she was referring to the Marina reveal)
Claudia appreciating Nicola for going with her to have vegan hot dog bc she’s vegan. Then she recounted how a drunk Nicola told everybody after a take: “Well, thanks everybody for the opportunity. This has been wonderful.”
NC talked about how Penelope should really talk about her secrets/troubles with her best friend & to open her eyes to other men bc she feels like Penelope is so in awe with Colin. “He’s lovely, but he’s just a guy.” (Preach, sis!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼). Nicola recounted how intoxicating those crushes were at Penelope’s age. Nicola not really into the romantic genre but appreciated Bridgerton especially the Hastings ball when she, Harriet & Bessie were reduced to tears by how breathtakingly beautiful it was.
Claudia said one of her favorite scenes was the one where she told Daphne: “thanks for being perfect, so, I don’t have to be.”
GC spoke with JQ and JQ said that what she liked about Peneloise is the fact that they’re trailblazers. They talked about the dichotomy between Daphne and Peneloise. How Daphne is calmly revolutionizing ways while Peneloise are charging in and trailblazing.
Shonda Rhimes said Peneloise is one of the relationships she’s most excited to talk about
Their favorite moments on set involve food. They’re both Colins!!!! Lol. Claudia simping over the quesadilla and the vegan cheesy garlic bread. Both gushing over the magic sandwich - the best sandwich in the world. It’s hash brown, sausages, and ketchup in a roll. Claudia likes hers with brown sauce.
Both were fangirling over Adjoa & Golda.
Claudia’s favorite moment on set was the very early call times (0445). She would get coffee, have a ciggy, and chant (she’s Buddhist).
Nicola’s favorite moment she said was the the first days of the actors being together (May 2019). She was with Claudia, Luke T, Harriet Cains, Jonny Bailey & Phoebe. She liked the buzziness of starting something. She loves the ensemble quality of any job. Nothing happens in isolation & what you can create together.

Grey’s Anatomy. Season 1-. 7.8/10
Season 1:
Everyone is so young. I love that Cristina is a bit more subservient here, because she can do whatever she wants in the future. I seem to like Izzie here even though I don’t ever recall liking her. McDreamy really is so dreamy. Miranda’s so tough and talks back to her attendings a lot without repercussions, because she’s pretty much right.
How are there no repercussions to Alex having posted Izzie’s photos in the hospital?
Season 2:
Derek has no right to treat Meredith the way he does when he’s hurt.
George and Callie are an interesting couple.
Season 3:
I stopped liking George after he had sex with Meredith. He became less likable. Thatcher’s a bitch.
I could see George and Izzie together if everything wasn’t the way it is. aka in another world altogether.
Whenever Cristina feels emotion, I empathize.
Season 4:
Callie doesn’t deserve any of this negativity. I just don’t understand Derek wanting to break up. Meredith hasn’t been drifting away ever since her drowning.
Lexie seems like a really sweet girl, but lowkey. Like, I wouldn’t notice her until I talked with her. Rose pretty.
Dylan Minnette was so young here, but his role was so good.
This season all about men saying shitty things and making shitty choices and we give them more chances.
Season 5:
Owen is a lot more hardcore and macho here than he is in Season 16 era.
I love Lexie. I love her with Mark.
I could not date someone like Alex, especially if he yells at me.
Season 6:
I love Cristina taking a selfie with Harper Avery. She was so funny this entire season. Also, her during the shooting is so amazing and she’s the best friend ever.
So, did Izzie pay her own bills or no?
Where even is Megan and the other interns? Irrelevant.
I could’ve seen Mark and Teddy be a thing if they worked harder at it.
Season 7:
Imagine if Cristina couldn’t be a surgeon.
I love when Alex was a team player for Kepner during trauma certification. It’s funny that he goes for Steve’s shoes. Same when he’s body blocking Stark.
Season 12:
All the main characters of the og show is now gone except Karev, Meredith, Bailey, and Webber. I truly miss all the old characters and dislike being forced to learn about the others’ live continuing without them. I guess that’s life though. Transitions have gotten much smoother than in the previous seasons but the content is not as good (or maybe i’m just not as attached to the characters).
Still appreciate the crazy surgeries needing to take place. Shonda Rhimes is the idol.
Season 13:
The surgeons are really so confident and arrogant in their thinking. Always bickering about who is right. Why is shit always going down?
Season 13 really upped its game from Season 12. Thought it’d be dumb after everyone died. I love how into surgery the surgeons are. esp when they’re like omg i need neuro porn. I love when they add in episodes of real life healthcare outside of the hospital. Alex is the best. Everyone is so brave. Tidbits of characters’ murmurings are rather funny this season.
Season 14:
This season is much better. It brings in interesting/woke af concepts. I like when they didn’t have the monitors working. I like that the title of the 9th episode is the domestic violence hotline. I loved when everyone was so helpful in Bello’s deportation situation. THE WEED ONE WAS SO AMUSING. I love when Alex and Meredith bring up past stories, because I went through all of that with them and nostalgia. I love when they bring in baby cristina and friends bc I miss them. I love how mature Meredith is and it is wild because I’ve been with these people since their journey from being interns. It’s so wild. Now, they’re legends. Carina’s study makes me amused. Carina herself is amusing. Megan’s a great girl. Glad PTM made it. I love how proactive everyone is in wanting to become a better surgeon. The contest is so cool. They are coming up with some brilliant stuff. I love all the loyalty and relationships with one another. I enjoy Betty.
How do so many attractive people exist?
I’m noticing the Windows Surface.
This made me want to move to Seattle.
Season 15:
I honestly love how confident every one is and they are proud of their accomplishments. They’re arrogant, but they deserve it, yaknow. I love how supportive everyone is with one another. I love how they gossip all the time and reveal way to much about their personal lives in their professional lives. Hello first gay guy surgeon. You’re good looking. I love when he played Operation LOL. I love how genuinely interested they are in each others’ lives. Meredith talking to Jo to help her fix her perspective is what every single person in the world should hear about themselves. Interesting all the changes in relationship dynamics.
Ted Mosby? What ya doing here? Louie (the patient) ‘s wife reminded me of Carol Kane.
LOL at when they all felt inferior to a math whiz.
Amelia’s life is trash ahh.
Season 16:
I’m glad Meredith seems to be more important this season. I’m more invested. OMG girl from Booksmart. Here I thought that she was going to be a permanent cast member. Guthrie was so funny.
I can’t believe we just got rid of Alex this way. Poor Jo! I like her so much more than Izzie. Also can’t believe we just made DeLuca crazy.
Memorable Quotes: “I’d give anything for your kind of serenity.” “I don’t even know you, I’m a farmer.” “She’s strong, but she listens to you.” “Never settle again.” “Just when I think you’re boring, you rise.” “Want my pickle?” “She’s Callie O’Malley.” “Screwed up people have a chance.” “You are the one person I wanted to tell.” “Be kind, rewind.” “The people who suffer the most are those who don’t know what they want.” “Some things don’t need to be told.” “Walk tall.” “I broke me.” “Are you having the dark and twisties?” ““The social worker won’t return my page.” “Well, that’s not very social.”“ “We break you down to rebuild you.” “Every pain has a purpose. God, I hope that one’s true.” “You are Jo Wilson, I know exactly who you are.” “The good outweighed the bad, until it didn’t.” “Because I’ve never had the last name of anyone who has ever loved me.” “I don’t think I need my neck anymore.” “and what might be easy for one person, for someone else it might take inner strength that you can’t even imagine.“ “When did you turn 40?” “Why do we often run for the hills when we feel the slightest connection?” “Kiss the one who turns back time for you.” “When people reach out a hand, you don’t bite it. I did it for years. The only thing it gets you is they stop reaching out.” “I don’t want to stop. And I do.” “The whole world is broken.” “Recovery is not a team sport.”

Filtering Female Characters Through the Male Gaze
Female characters filtered through the male gaze:  A (way) too long post about why we need a more diverse and inclusive approach to staffing showrunners, writers, directors, crew – heck, all roles -- in TV and movies.
Yes, I know I am not the first person here on this.
And note that while I have included a few tags b/c I talk about my frustration with Shadowhunters, Veronica Mars, the Irishman, Richard Jewell, and a few other recent shows/movies, I don’t get to this stuff until the very end,  I appreciate that fans may not want to wade through the entire essay, which (again), is a bit of personal catharsis.
I recently had a random one-off exchange with a TV writer on twitter.  The writer said that she had enjoyed the movie Bombshell much more than its Rotten Tomatoes rating would have suggested.  She wondered if the disconnect between her experience/perception of the movie and that of mainstream reviewers might have been shaped by gender: Specifically, she observed that Bombshell is a movie about women, but most reviewers are male.
I have complicated feelings about Bombshell.  On one hand, yes, there was and is a toxic culture at Fox News.  Yes, Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly were victims of that toxic culture.  But no, these women were not mere bystanders:  They traded in the racism, misogyny, and xenophobia (for starters) that still characterize Fox News today.  Why should these wealthy, privileged white women – both of whom spent many years as willing foot soldiers in the Fox News army -- get a glossy, Hollywood-approved redemption/vindication arc?  On the other hand, I am glad that the movie makers made a film about sexual harassment, and that the movie presented Kelly, in particular, as an at least somewhat complicated character.  This would not be the first time that a movie about women – especially complicated, and not always likeable women – has proven to be polarizing.
My ambivalence about Bombshell notwithstanding, the writer with whom I exchanged tweets is (not surprisingly, since she is in the industry and I am not) on to something when it comes to gender, character development and critical reception. It’s not just that Bombshell was about women, but reviewed largely by men; it’s that stories about female characters (real or fictional) often are filtered through the male gaze in Hollywood:  On many projects – even those focused on female characters – creators/ head writers are male, directors are male, showrunners are male, and producers are male.  This matters, because preferencing the male gaze impacts what stories about women get told, who gets to tell them, and how these stories are received inside and outside Hollywood.
First, though, the caveats. I do not mean to suggest that men can never tell great stories about women.  Of course they can.   I also don’t mean to suggest that being female exempts creators, writers, directors, showrunners, etc. from sexism or misogyny (or any other forms of bigotry, as my discussion of Bombshell suggests).   There are plenty of women who prop up the patriarchy.  Rebecca Traister’s work speaks to this issue, as does the work of Cornell philosopher Kate Manne.  There is an important literature on the concept of misogynoir (misogyny directed at black women, involving both gender and race), a term coined by black queer feminist Moya Bailey, as well.  Intersectionality matters in understanding what stories are told, who gets to speak, and how stories are received in and outside Hollywood.  I also don’t mean to suggest that there are no powerful women in Hollywood.   Shonda Rhimes; Ava DuVernay, Reese Witherspoon (increasingly, given her role as a producer of projects like Big Little Lies), Greta Gerwig’s work in Lady Bird and Little Women, and others come to mind.  As I am not in the entertainment industry, I am sure others could put together a far more complete and accurate list of female Hollywood power brokers.  And, finally, I appreciate that Hollywood is a business, and people fund and make movies that they think their target audiences want to see.  So long as young, male viewers are a coveted demographic, we are going to see projects with women who appeal to this demographic onscreen.
Given these caveats, why do I think that the filtering of female characters through the male gaze is an issue? For me, it has to do with a project’s “center of gravity” -- that place, at the core of the project’s storytelling, where the characters’ agency and autonomy comes from.  It’s where I look to understand the characters’ choices and their narrative arcs.  When a character’s center of gravity is missing or unstable or unreliable, the character’s choices don’t make sense, and their narrative arc lacks emotional logic. Center of gravity is not about whether a character is likeable.  It’s about whether a character – and the project’s overall storytelling and narrative voice – make sense.
When female characters are filtered through a male gaze, a project’s center of gravity can shift, even if unintentionally, away from the characters’ agency and point of view:  So, instead of charting her own course through a story, a female character starts to become defined by her proximity to other characters and stories.  She becomes half of a “ship” . . . or a driver of other characters’ growth (often through victimization, suffering, or self-sacrifice) . . . or mostly an object of sexual desire (whether requited or not).   Eventually, she can lose her voice entirely.  When that happens, instead of a “living, breathing” (yes, fictional, I know) character, we are left with a mirror/ mouthpiece who advances the plot, and the stories, of everyone else.
What are some recent examples of this? The two that I have mentioned recently here are Shadowhunters and Veronica Mars S4.
- With SHTV, I will always wonder what might have been if the show – which is based on books written by a woman, intentionally as a “girl power” story – had female showrunners. Would an empowered female showrunner have left Clary, THE PROTAGONIST OF A 6 BOOK SERIES – alone on an NYC street in a skimpy party dress, in November, with no money, no ID, no mother, no father figure and no love of her life, stripped of her memories, her magic, and chosen vocation, as punishment, after she saved the world?  Would a female showrunner have sidelined Clary’s love Jace, and left him grieving and suicidal, while his family lived their best lives and told him to move on?  Would a female showrunner have said, in press coverage of the series finale, that the future of the Clary and Jace characters was a matter for fan fiction?  After spending precious time in the series finale wrapping up narrative arcs for non-canon and/or ancillary characters.  And to my twitter correspondent’s point, I guess I am not surprised that mainstream entertainment media outlets didn’t call out the showrunners’ mistreatment of Clary, and by extension, Jace, and the obliteration of their narrative arcs -- and yes, I am looking at you, Andy Swift of TV line (who called the above-mentioned memory wipe “actually perfect”).
- Likewise, with Veronica Mars, would a more diverse and inclusive writers room have made S4 Veronica less insightful and less competent than her high school self, or quite so riven with self-loathing, or quite so careless and cruel with the people in her life who love her?  Would a more inclusive creative team have made S4 Veronica less aware of the class and race dynamics of Neptune, yet more casually racist, in her mid-30s, than she was in high school?
- There are so many other examples from 2019.  Clint Eastwood falsely suggesting that a female reporter (who is now deceased and thus unable to defend herself) traded sex for tips from an FBI agent in Richard Jewell. Game of Thrones treatment/resolution of the Ceresi and Daenerys characters – where to even start.  Martin Scorsese’s decision to give Oscar winner Anna Paquin’s character a total of 7 lines in the 3-plus hour movie the Irishman.
- And, in real life, I wonder whether a Hollywood that empowered and supported female creators would make sure that people like Mira Sorvino and Annabella Sciorra got a bunch of work while also making sure that Harvey Weinstein never again is in a position of power or influence.   Same with female comics targeted by Louis C.K. Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose … the list is long, and Kate Manne’s work on what she calls “himpathy” is useful here.
To be clear, I am not saying that stories involving “ships” of whatever flavor, stories of suffering and self-sacrifice, and stories of finding (or losing) intimate relationships are “bad” or “wrong” or inherently exploitive of female characters.  I don’t think that at all.  I also don’t think that female characters have to be perfectly well-adjusted, virtuous, or free from bias, or that they should never be make bad choices or mistakes.  I want female characters who are flawed, nuanced.  I don’t mind lives that are messy, or romantic entanglements that are complicated.  Finally, I don’t think that that faulty, reductive, or unfair portrayals of female characters is a new thing.  Mary Magdalene was almost certainly not a prostitute, after all.  And classicist Emily Wilson – the first woman to translate the Odyssey into English – has brought a hugely important perspective (including an awareness of how gender matters in translation) and voice to the translation and study of canonical characters and works.
At the end of the day, I just want female characters to be able to speak with their own voices, from their perspectives.  I want them to have their own, chosen, narrative arcs.  I want them to speak, act, see, and feel as autonomous individuals, with agency, and not just in reference to others.  And, I think that more a more diverse and inclusive approach to staffing writers rooms and in choosing show runners, directors, and key positions in storytelling would help.

Tonight on Television (the return of Shondaland in trump’s america)
So, tonight I saw:
* A white lesbian doctor talk about her Latina daughter, the complications of adoption laws, and the challenges of long distance parenting with her teenage pregnant max prison inmate patient. Later, she went on to lecture said patient/inmate’s mother that being a parent means never giving up on your child. A lesbian mom was the voice of family values on primetime network television. Just…. what… 8 years ago? That wasn’t even a thought.
* Then, a white gay man with a black daughter and an ex-sex worker for a husband murdered his way into becoming President of the United States. (Yeaaah… Let that sentence sink in).
*THEN! THEN! It had to be explained to a bisexual black woman attorney that it would obviously be a conflict of interest to have her Jewish lesbian ex-girlfriend (and love of her life) be her representing council in the murder charge she’s being framed for.
*Meanwhile, a white gay male graduate student admitted to his HIV positive Asian boyfriend that he intentionally cheated on him during their previous break up out of spite. Only to have said boyfriend forgive him, because he knew what was in his heart.
All of these characters are network regulars, all of them are fully formed over many seasons, integral to their plots, and are not written with “being gay” as their sole character trait.
Taken together, they represent a variety of races, ages, and sexuality.
I say all of this because my tumblr fandom life primarily surrounds a television show that struggles to pass even the most basic levels of positive diverse representation, in regards to BOTH sexuality and race. I say this because another fandom that I am tangentially around is being applauded for their major lesbian storyline, despite having woefully mislead many queer women of color in regards to one of those two characters.
And I say all of this because, outside of the relative small scale of fandom, IT IS A F*CKING HARD TIME TO BE A QUEER PERSON OF COLOR IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW.
But for 3 hours, I watched television, and watched characters who were allowed to be flawed and human and be good or epically evil or somewhere in-between. And who looked like I do, love like I do, and have families like the ones I hope to someday have.
So, it’s out there you guys. It’s out there and it’s possible. And we will keep fighting for it until it is not just one night or a handful of tv shows. It will be every night, every genre, on every channel. Because we are everywhere and we deserve to be seen.
*end rant*   *sees myself out at the door*

A strategy to combat the recent Grey’s Anatomy decision
I’m devastated by the news that Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew were fired. And no, they’re not departing. They were fired. And I understand I’m not the only person devastated. So I’ve taken it upon myself to do a little research as to what we, as fans, can do to combat this injustice.
But, don’t worry, I’ve not fallen victim to the idealized and unrealistic notion that my small period of research and Tumblr post are going to change the outcome. I simply can’t just sit here and do nothing. I’m looking at this like a court case and at Shonda Rhimes as a judge. She will not be inclined to reverse herself, as that means she’d be admitting she was wrong, creating more work for herself, and potentially looking weak in the process. (And I don’t entirely blame her. As a black woman in a white male dominated industry, she can’t really afford to look weak. However, I believe this decision will likely reflect badly on her regardless of whether or not she reverses it). Ideally, I want to put Shonda, Krista, and their colleagues in a position where they feel pressure to re-evaluate the decision.
Petitions. There’s one here that’s gained some attention (almost 28K supporters at the time this was posted).
This isn’t the first Grey’s Anatomy petition to be widely recognized. After Derek’s death, nearly 100,000 fans signed a petition to bring him back. That one was not successful, and I attribute that to a few key differences. First, Derek was already dead at the time, and secondly, Patrick Dempsey didn’t want to be on the show any longer, and if an actor can’t put their heart into the character they portray, everyone’s being done an injustice. Now, I believe that Jessica and Sarah don’t want to leave, though correct me if I’m wrong. I’d gladly re-evaluate my stance if this were a mutual decision, like almost all of the main character departures prior to this point have been, rather than a decision above even Ellen Pompeo’s “pay grade”.
This article suggests that in order to boycott Grey’s, we need to refrain fro watching new episodes until 7 days after they air and not implement social media hashtags within 3 hours of the episode airing.
Our cause has already gained some publicity. [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] Their co-stars aren’t happy. I’d like to see organizations like GLADD draw attention to this.
I can’t find too much precedent for networks bringing individual characters back upon fans’ urging, but there are some examples of fans bringing back TV shows. [x] [x] Though, fans managed to bring Sherlock Holmes back in Arthur Conan Doyle’s days, and they did so without tools like online petitions and social media, so anything’s possible.
This decision to end April Kepner and Arizona Robbins’ stories may never be reversed, but the more publicity and traction that our outrage gets, the better the chances are that, at the very least, the Grey’s writers and executives will see that they can’t just get away with giving up on some of TV’s most beloved characters, including one of the few queer female characters on primetime TV.  I also want to show Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew that we appreciate them, and we don’t approve of or support what’s being done to them.

Link Tank: Ted Lasso’s Portrayal of Mental Health Is a Gift
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Apple TV+ hit series Ted Lasso is having an amazing impact on its viewers thanks to the show’s focus on mental health and therapy.
“In the first episode of Ted Lasso Season 2, the relentlessly cheerful protagonist tells a reporter (trent crimm, the independent), ‘There are two buttons i never like to push: panic and snooze.’ Over the next 10 episodes, it becomes clear that panic is something Lasso has been trying to keep at bay. We saw him have a panic attack in Season 1 — seemingly the result of his then-wife sending him divorce papers — but by the end of Episode 11, we’ve gotten a much fuller picture of Lasso’s struggles.”

“The great Facebook outage of 2021 is over (for now), but in the DNS snafu that took down the popular yet controversial social network, there was collateral damage. Namely, other services owned by Facebook, including WhatsApp and Instagram, also went dark, and along with them, your digital memories. That’s why it’s smart to occasionally back up your social accounts, even if they’re already in the cloud—such as all your Insta-pics. We’ll show you how.”

A slow but sure return to the movie theaters has some people appreciate the day-and-date streaming releases more.
“As vaccination rates have increased, I’ve been able to do something in the past few weeks I’ve not been able to do for over a year and a half: go sit in a dark room for several hours that is not in my own house, and see a movie. Things have changed, of course—there are still masks (albeit fewer than you’d hope), buckets of popcorn, and standees flanked by hand sanitizer stations. But it’s not just the theatrical experience that has evolved—the way I’ve come to appreciate movies has, too.”

Riverdale ties up a lackluster season 5 with the defeat of evil by Archie and the gang in the season finale.
“Like Archie and the gang, our coverage returns to Riverdale after a long absence to find the town mostly the same, but worse. The back half of the show’s fifth season has shuffled through a handful of largely tedious mini-plots—Polly’s death and its aftermath, Veronica’s assorted non-starter business ventures, Cheryl Blossom’s screwloose ministry the most amusing among them—only to arrive at a narrative juncture not so unfamiliar for the cast of characters.”

Are you excited for Bridgerton Season 2? Here’s everything you need to know about it so far.
“After Netflix viewers blazed through the first, all-too-short season of the streaming service’s new Regency era romance series Bridgerton from Shonda Rhimes, the only thing on their minds, apart from all those steamy sex scenes and that shocking last-minute reveal (no spoilers!), was: When will we get more???”

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #186 - The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
Tumblr media
Spoilers Below
Have I seen it before: Yes
Did I like it then: I think so.
Do I remember it: Better than I did the 1st one, which isn’t saying much.
Did I see it in theaters: No
Format: Blu-ray
I nominated the recap for the first Princess Diaries to @princessofsunnydale because she nominated it for my (Re)Watch so I thought I’d do the same for this post. Thanks!
1) I think it was a wildly smart decision to move the setting of this film from San Francisco to Mia’s often spoke of but rarely seen dominion of Genovia. It’s an organic next step to her story. We saw her learn how to be a princess in San Fran, now we see how she actually adapts to her home country (which is a lively character in its own right). The decision to jump ahead five years ahead instead of three (the number of years between releases) I think also is nice. Mia is more comfortable in the agency she gained in the first film, the relationship with her beau Michael is not hanging over her head, it just allows the film to not be dogged down by some plot points from the first film.
2) Sir Fat Louie? Did they knight him? Can you knight a cat?
3) I didn’t remember this line before I put in the movie but I do now.
Tumblr media
4) Shonda Rhimes co-authored the story AND wrote the screenplay? Huh.
Tumblr media
(I don’t actually watch any Shonda Rhimes shows, now that I think about it.)
5) Chris Pine as Nicholas.
Tumblr media
There is a strong initial chemistry Pine has with lead actress Hathaway, allowing the audience to grow invested in their relationship quickly. Even/especially when they’re not getting long, you can just fell the sexual chemistry in the air between them. It’s fun, making the film stronger because of it.
Chris Pine on his own is as charismatic and interesting as ever. In lesser hands the character of Nicholas could be an even bigger jerk and while there are antagonistic qualities to him the audience UNDERSTANDS his motivations. He is trying to honor what he believes his dead father wanted, he believes he’s trying to do what’s best for Genovia. And when he sees he was mistaken, he tries to step aside. There’s a nice honesty to Pine’s performance. He doesn’t play Nicholas as an over the top mustache twirling villain. All in all, Pine does a fine job in this film and helps support it.
6) Except for one black guy, Genovia’s parliament is made up of all white guys saying they don’t want a woman to rule unless she has a man by her side.
Tumblr media
I think Queen Clarisse has the perfect response to that.
Tumblr media
The law is severely sexist and antiquated. One of the members of parliament claims it should be respected because it is 300 years old. Saying a law is that old is not an effective argument for it as much as it is AGAINST it. 300 years ago in 2004 that’s 1704. That’s slavery, that’s a fundamental lack of women’s rights across most countries. Don’t use the fact a law is old to argue for it. Laws should evolve as the world does.
7) John Rhys Davies is a wonderful character actor who plays Nicholas’ uncle as a holier than thou elitist arrogant jerk. I love to hate him in this, but I might need to watch Lord of the Rings or Raiders of the Lost Ark next to balance out my feelings.
Tumblr media
8) Hey guys. Remember that time Catwoman stomped on Captain Kirk’s foot in front of Gimli and Mary Poppins?
Tumblr media
I’m sure someone has made this joke before, but still.
9) The last film was largely about Clarisse putting her duty as queen aside to be Mia’s grandmother, a relationship which is as strong in this film as ever.
Clarisse [after Mia stomped on Nicholas’ foot]: “As a grandma I say right on.”
10) Like the first film, this movie’s biggest flaw is definitely pacing. Many scenes serve no purpose for the larger plot and instead distract from the main conflict. But - like with the first film - these scenes are also some of the most memorable. So…I’m not sure what to say then. I’m just going to move on.
11) I dig this.
Tumblr media
Matarazzo is a continued treat in this film as she was in the first, stealing a number of scenes and infusing some quality humor into the plot. The way she mixes with Genovian life and culture can lead to some nice fish out of water observations, and Matarazzo plays the role with as much commitment and heart as she did in the first film. God bless Lily.
12) The bachelor selection scene is - by far - one of my favorite moments in the film. It is directly related to the plot and has an incredible amount of humor to it. Also, it’s not nearly as long as I remember.
youtube
For those of you who didn’t watch the clip above (or even if you did), here is my favorite moment from the scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GIFs originally posted by @ezrajamessharkington)
I mean it’s small, but I appreciate that both this film and its predecessor acknowledge the LGBTQIA+ community more than other Disney films did at the time.
13) Callum Blue as Andrew Jacoby.
Tumblr media
Much like Michael from the first film, Andrew is able to be a good guy while avoiding the trope of Nice Guy™. There is a respect he has for Mia, an understanding and a fondness. They clearly have a connection and appreciate each other’s company, but it is clear that neither of them love each other. And Andrew does not force this on Mia. He’s pretty much at her service, ready to respect her wishes without being a total pushover. He’s a good guy, someone who could have easily been a jerk or a bully but the fact Mia could plausibly end up with him just ups the stakes.
14) The fan scene is a nice moment of chemistry between Hathaway and Andrews, which (much like in the preceding film) is one of the strongest elements of this movie.
Tumblr media
this film one of those moments is when she is reduced to tears because John Rhys Davies spooked her horse and revealed that - SHOCKER - women actually prefer to not ride side saddle. I suppose it’s better that she’s too hard on herself than not hard enough though, as she will be queen.
16) Damn, Joe is a badass.
Mabrey: “Sir, you will find that the word ‘fear’ is not in my vocabulary.”
Joe: “Perhaps. But it’s in your eyes.”
Tumblr media
17) Hey look! The foot pop!
Tumblr media
18) Okay, Nicholas is being creepy with Mia at the fountain. Yes, they kiss. But then she says no to him. Multiple times, too. Yet he keeps groping at her and chasing her around the fountain until they both fall in. And MIA’S in trouble?
Tumblr media
19) The parade.
youtube
By far the strongest moment in the film. It shows off not only the agency Mia gained in the first film (she has the confidence to stop a parade), but also her incredible heart. She shows off such kindness and care for the people of Genovia, accepts her role as a leader, and is able to create a positive change through the sheer depth of her heart. Also, little Abigail Breslin is very cute.
20) Holy crap, Paul Williams is in this movie.
Tumblr media
What is this movie?
21) The bridal slumber party is another scene which doesn’t really add to the plot and it goes a little long. BUT - again - it is wildly memorable. Especially seeing Julie Andrews surf on a mattress after giving a wink to her most iconic character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
22) Julie Andrews’ song.
youtube
Julie Andrews underwent surgery in 1997 to treat what she referred to as a muscular striation on her vocal cords. She emerged from the surgery with permanent damage that hurt her singing voice and gave a rasp to her speaking voice (for which she sued the hospital for malpractice two years later). Julie Andrews basically lost her singing voice. Her song “Your Crowning Glory” was the first time she sang on screen since the surgery. Although it was set in a limited range to accommodate her voice, she was reported to have nailed it on the first take and brought tears to the eyes of crew members on set. Raven Symoné - who duets with Andrews on the song - was so moved when she told she’d be singing with the legend that she too was reportedly brought to tears. If for no other reason, I am grateful this movie exists for all of that.
23) Nicholas is very ready to step aside and let Mia rule.
Nicholas [after his uncle notes all their work would be for nothing]: “It wouldn’t be nothing. Genovia would in good hands.”
I love that. I love that he’s true to his beliefs about doing what’s right for Genovia, NOT himself.
24) So there’s a slight bit of foreshadowing here.
Nicholas [at Mia’s window]: “Rapunzel, Rapunzel…”
Tumblr media
Chris Pine would later go on to play Cinderella’s Prince in the 2014 film adaptation of Into the Woods, which also featured the characters of Rapunzel and her prince.
25) I’m surprised Paolo’s back. I mean, Larry Miller is great. But didn’t he totally betray the trust of the royal family in the first film? And also, why is he suddenly kinda bad at styling Mia?
Tumblr media
26) Bless whoever made this
Tumblr media
(I just found this on google. If this is your’s and you want credit let me know and I’ll be happy to give it.)
27) Um, guys…
Tumblr media
What the heck is Stan Lee doing in The Princess Diaries 2? Is Mia going to join The Avengers? Is Genovia a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? What is happening!?
All humor aside, as I understand it Stan Lee will cameo in any movie asked as long as he gets his standard fee. I think he wants to have the record for most cameos ever.
28) I dig it, Andrew.
Andrew [after Mia calls off the wedding]: “Uh…thank you. Thank you for saving me from doing the proper thing for once in my life.”
29) Much like the first film, it is Mia who must take her own fate in her hands. She’s the one who argues against the marriage law, she’s the one who convinces the people and parliament to strike it down (although the Prime Minister is again incredibly supportive and I love that). It’s her taking charge of her life, which I think is absolutely great.
Tumblr media
30) I 100% forgot that part of this film ended with Clarisse and Joe getting married. I am very okay with that.
Tumblr media
31) OH MY GOD YES! PARLIAMENT IS MORE DIVERSE AT THE END! THERE ARE SO MANY WOMEN AND EVEN WOMEN OF COLOR AND IT’S JUST BEAUTIFUL AND DIVERSE AND I NEED MORE OF IT! THANK YOU!
Tumblr media
Like the first film, The Princess Diaries 2 held up surprisingly better than I was expecting. Obviously it’s aimed at a younger audience than me but it was pretty enjoyable. Anne Hathaway is strong as ever, as is Julie Andrews, while Chris Pine is a welcome and fitting addition to the cast. The themes are nicely feminist as is the ending. Overall I just find it an enjoyable film worth the watch.

280: The Importance of Daily and Weekly Rituals & Routines You Love (12 Ideas to Incorporate Now)
Tumblr media
"You would think weightlessness is a good thing, but it's not. Because people weren't meant to float. Without gravity, we lose blood volume, bone density, muscle. Without it, we're untethered. So when you feel yourself being pulled toward something, it's not necessarily a bad thing. It may keep you centered. It may keep you safe." —Grey's Anatomy, season 16, episode #17, Shonda Rhimes
Thoughts, thoughts, all sorts of thoughts. With an abundance of time on our hands as we stay home, if we have not exercised our brains in this way, it may feel uncomfortable, and in these times we find ourselves collectively, understandably unsettling.
The above quote caught my attention this past week as it feels our attentions are being being pulled toward the necessities of life, what we sincerely need to simply live. Don't get me wrong, the past eleven years, economically, have been much needed and appreciated, and while each of our journey's is unique, perhaps we've forgotten what we truly need, what others truly need, to live well. At the moment, we are all being pulled to our homes, to our sanctuaries, to our immediate families with whom we reside with but perhaps never see often because of our busy schedules. Admittedly, some of our loved ones may be far away due to age, relationships, work, etc., but we at least have the phone, video chat and other technological ways of communicating.
Becoming grounded in what roots us, is what reminds us of what truly is a priority in our life, helps us to make better decisions to remain true to those values when the choices are vast. And sometimes when the choices are so vast and so ubiquitous for such a long time, we would only be being human to lose sight of our roots. I am not suggesting that we need to have a pandemic to root us, but that is where we find ourselves, so I am determined to see some good in this perilous situation.
There will be good that will come out of it when we come out of it on the other side, but as well, there is good we can partake in during this time of staying home.
Today, while I had originally planned a different topic for the episode to be shared, I have decided to focus on something that will hopefully be helpful to direct our attention to, to elevate the time we have indoors, wanted or unwanted. The gift and mood lifting power of daily and weekly rituals.
Under the umbrella of daily and weekly rituals lies our daily and weekly routines. Consciously creating routines in which we know boost the quality of our lives from our health, to our rest and rejuvenation to our productivity are ways to rest more easily which benefits our mind and well-being and decreases our stress. Each of these efforts strengths our immune system and ultimately strengthens our overall health, both physically and mentally.
Today I would like to share with you rituals you can incorporate into your daily and weekly routine even while you stay home.
1.Wake up well
Design a morning routine in which regardless of whether you are heading out the door (when our routines get back to normal) or staying home, you want to get out of bed and partake in. In episode #243 I share 12 Ways to Make Your Mornings Magical, Mindful and the Foundation of a Great Day.
2. Create a daily routine you love
As I shared with my students what would be expected of them while we stepped into our extended break (Oregon has announced they will be closing all schools through the entire month of March.), one student immediately decided she would find a favorite place she enjoyed being, give herself this window during her day to complete her schoolwork and then be done. I was so tickled to hear such thoughtful and conscientious attention to both her academics, but also her well-being by compartmentalizing and stepping away from work so she could relax and just be.
All of us, whether at home, and especially now that we are home, would benefit from creating a schedule in our day for productivity, but also meals, rest and exercise. Knowing we have accomplished something will let us rest more easily and make it easier to sleep at night. As well, we will be giving our bodies and mind a healthy balance to remain strong.
3. An afternoon brain break
Whether you enjoy an afternoon tea or an afternoon nap or an afternoon outside exercising, create a ritual that will be something you look forward to as you make your way through your day. If you are like me, and live alone, this may be a good time to call loved ones to check in. If you live with others, it may be a great time to be together if you are busy doing your own thing throughout the day. Either way, make a point of intentionally not doing work, but rather something relaxing and enjoyable. Something that elevates the everyday even more so that each day you look forward to such moments.
4. Welcome the flowers
I shared on Instagram yesterday (see below) how one of the items on my grocery list this weekend (I went early and wore gloves as well as washed my hands before and after) was to welcome a few bouquets of flowers into my home. Recent researched has shared that having fresh flowers can "lower blood pressure and heart rate, lower ratings of pain, anxiety, and fatigue, and more positive feelings and higher satisfaction [about one's home]". So while, we need to stay home as much as possible, if possible keeping in my sanitation requirements, welcome some flowers into your home and perhaps bring a bouquet for your neighbor and leave them on their doorstep with a note. You may help their health more than you realize.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B9wz7UJHcOY/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
5. What to listen to? What brings you joy.
Create a listening ritual that carries you through your day. From the classical music I wake up to on WRTI with host Gregg Whiteside and Breakfast with Bach at 5am to the jazz in the evenings from my Spotify playlist, as well as podcasts about food and France enjoyed while I walk the dogs along the river, around the neighborhood or through the trees, what we turn on melodically has a tremendously powerful effect over our well-being. Choose what you love and let it elevate your days.
Music I listen to:
WRTI - classical and jazz
KUSC - classical
TSLL playlists
Escape to France . . .
Luxurious Classical Music (more than 10 hours of music)
Everyday Jazz
French Cafe Jazz (no lyrics)
Jazzy Dinner playlist (Spotify)
Podcasts I have been loving recently:
The Land of Desire (French history and culture)
MilkStreet Radio
Inside Julia's Kitchen
The Splendid Table
6. Fitness Habits That Energize
The key to sustainable exercise routines is to keep them seemingly small, yet consistent and intentional. As I shared in the first episode of 2020 on the podcast, #272, 8 Ways Tiny Habits Will Welcome the Great Changes You Seek, tiny habits have a powerful way of instituting the change we desire. Why? Because they are more likely to stick, and truly become habituated into our daily routine.
From waking up and doing one set of sit-ups (by the end of the week you will have done five sets!), to meditating for one minute each morning, to sipping a glass of water upon waking up in the morning, when you choose thoughtfully the habits you want in your life, reduce them down to seemingly so small, there is no reason not do the task, and before you know it, as you see the positive change, you won't want to reduce your effort and may even want to increase it.
So as we find ourselves with more time at home and being unlikely to attend our favorite fitness class or gym, find exercise habits at home that will fulfill the exercise routine you need, but in a way that you enjoy. I am shifting my weekly yoga classes to a YouTube yoga instructor for the time being (but I cannot wait to return to the yoga studio), and my walks will be where I can keep my social distance at a healthy length from others, for their sake as well as mine.
7. Create an evening ritual for winding down before going to bed
Something I look forward to every day, weekday or weekend, is my evening routine. After the work on the blog has been completed, after dinner has been made and savored, it is this hour or two before I drift off to sleep that is priceless. My dogs as well have become accustomed to our routine and even though they do not know the time of day we humans live by, they know when bedtime is near.
From calming down the house, dishes washed, kitchen cleaned, work put away, to lighting a candle in the living room, turning on a pre-taped show or picking up a book or magazine I want to slip away to for a while, these simple activities tell my mind it is safe to rest, to relax, to be done for the day. All the while sipping some tea and nibbling on a piece of chocolate truffle, the ultimate signal to my body and brain that the day is done.
8. Be Conscientious About Your Daily News Intake
Going along with #5, what media we choose to be part of our daily routines has a profound effect on our mental health. I shared and encouraged my students to limit their news intake as it can easily overwhelm us. I did not suggest sticking their head in the sand and ignoring the news, but rather choose one or two times a day in which you check in with a credible news source, and then go about your day.
9. Work space set-up
Cultivate a welcoming work space whether it is temporary or where you work on a normal workday. Provide a clean work desk (check out this post - 10 Ways to Make Your Desk Space Efficient and Inspiring), welcome the natural light, reduce unhelpful distractions and decorate or rearrange in such a way to beckon you to work well.
10. Befriend water
Choose to bring and drink water with you throughout the day. Staying hydrated has oodles of benefits, but on the immunity side of things, it will help rid your body of toxins. Even if I am enjoying my regular cup of tea in the morning, afternoon or evening, I regularly will have a glass of water as well or have my Hydroflask full of water if I am out walking (it is in my car for when I return). Cultivating this habit will satiate your appetite, refresh your body and elevate many arenas of your life that we take for granted.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BzGjIGCABD7/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
11. Turn your ideas into gold
Yes, William Shakespeare may have written King Lear during his quarantine tenure in the 16th century, and while we may not produce such masterpieces, we can use this time let our creative ideas run free so that we have time to see what they want to reveal. Keep a notebook or small journal handy and write down what pops into your mind. You may be able to tend to the idea now or it may be an idea you can implement later, but either way, it will be a positive exercise to focus on positive, hopeful, inspired things. Our mind is a muscle, and it finds the tracks we repeat again and again. So practice thinking in such a way that lifts you up, gets you excited and who knows where your creative thoughts will take you.
As for me, I am planning TSLL's upcoming British Week (the third full week in May), pulling together April 1st's TSLL's Spring Shopping Guide and whatever else wishes to reveal itself to me. :) Excited to see what I will discover. Have fun!
12. Incorporate regular self-care and model it for others in your life
That hot bath you used to take infrequently, but love and look forward to deeply . . . take it regularly, every week, every other day, but make it a ritual you look forward as well as savor when you slip into the hot bubble bath of comfort. Last year, I shared 31 Ways to Practice Self-Care, episode #242, and as I shared in this episode, while the bubble baths and other pleasures are certainly part of this regular self-care routine, self-care needs to go deeper. When self-care goes deeper, it has even more powerful and long-lasting positive effects on our life. Be sure to check out the show notes and/or episode for much more information on this topic.
The current situation in which we find ourselves is unprecedented in our times, but it has the potential to reveal a tremendous amount about our strengths, compassion and ability to rise in ways we may not have known we were capable. I am confident that while the unknown has the potential to paralyze, it can also teach us an abundance about ourselves, those around us, the world and then reveal to us what we should truly be focused on for a better world moving forward.

~Begin to cultivate a candle cupboard/closet.
I first learned of this idea from Queer Eye's Tan France when during his tour of his home for Architectural Digest he opened up a small closet (I would call it a cupboard) and shared his stocked candles. Now, mind you, my current Candle Cupboard has two candles in it waiting to be enjoyed, but as I come across candles that I love, if they are on sale, I purchase one or two more than I normally would. I don't expect my Candle Cupboard to ever be as full as Tan's, but I love this idea as a Petit Plaisir.

My Candle Cupboard is only barely stocked, but I love this idea and will continue to add to it as my budget and sales and treasures are found. Thank you Tan for sharing this wonderful idea!

It took me years to realize that I was a pretty girl
It would sincerely amaze me that whenever I posted a picture of my body or face or hair online, I’d get a positive feedback. Though I’ve struggled with that feeling for most of my childhood and adult life, I’ve made significant strides in regards to appreciating my fuller lips, “huge” nose, unruly hair, and no-bullshit attitude. But every so often I would catch myself thinking all sorts of thoughts as I transitioned out of my moody teenage years into the harsh times of being an “in-the-know” woman – many thoughts plagued me that would question how “awesome” it was to be a pretty Black woman. “Are they being sincere?” I would think to myself on any given day. “Am I being fetishized? I have to be overthinking.” In a world that tells you that loving yourself is selfish, condescending, and downright wrong, how do you get past all of that?
It’s not a secret – most women have been told at some point in their life to get over their personal issues with body image, with the result that they often become mute on the subject of insecurity and doubt, and correct themselves  in order to fit in with the crowd.
For the average Black girl such as myself, that confusing feeling of trying to think of myself as more than average would often mean backlash from others, resulting in me shutting down any resounding efforts I might have made to build myself up. Whether it’d be hating my nose or the way my body curves, the fact that I could never achieve the beach hair wavy look, or that I could never fit into clothes from Abercrombie and Fitch or American Eagle, I used to secretly hate every aspect of being a Black girl. From being told by an ex-boyfriend of mine that I’d be “perfect” if I had just a lighter skin tone, or if my curls were just a bit looser, to having the girls in my dance class color in my tights so that they could be “nude,” the insecure girl from my childhood days that remained into my adult years would take continual silent bruises to the ego.
There were times I would stand in the mirror and just say out loud “I wish I didn’t look this way,” sending myself into a fury of depression and low self-esteem.
That kind of teetering and self-doubt is what most Black women and girls go through on a daily basis, causing them to place themselves so deeply in a hole of self-loathing that they find it best to not even acknowledge their own beauty – simply because the burden that comes with it is just too much to bear. That sinking feeling is, unfortunately, not as singular as one might think, and isn’t as easy to absolve once it firmly cements its place in the mind. Black women of all shapes, sizes, and tones carry the pressure of these feelings for most days of their lives until finally, a moment comes when they realize that they are, indeed, worthy of praise.
Enter “Black Girl Magic,” the term that was developed by CaShawn Thompson almost two years ago and is now well on its way to becoming a household adjective. Growing into a movement that has empowered Black women all over the globe, Thompson’s “Black Girl Magic” has given women the courage to own their beauty despite the mean comments they’ve told themselves over the years. Though the origin of the B.G.M. movement was well-timed and much appreciated on my end, the feeling of being proud of who I was didn’t exactly hit me when it began. There was still a major part of me, despite seeing all of the Black women around me prospering, that felt it was selfish and wrong to truly believe in my beauty, my talents and, most of all, what made me “magical.”
It wasn’t until Essence Magazine released their special-edition “Black Girl Magic” covers for this year’s Black History Month that I truly understood the power of being a brown-skinned woman in this world. As I scrolled through my Twitter timeline and saw the faces of Yara Shahidi, Johnetta “Netta” Elzie, and Teyonah Parris celebrated for their accomplishments, tears unexpectedly rushed from my eyes. “Damn,” I thought. “I don’t think I’ve ever understood what it meant to see someone who looks like me receive the praise that these women are getting. Could I really be something in this world?”
From Beyoncé’s show-stopping performance, along with her statement-making visual and lyrical content for her new single “Formation,” to Viola Davis and Regina King boldly calling out Hollywood for its severe lack of diversity, to Ava Duvernay receiving her very own Barbie Doll, to Shonda Rhimes working continuously to ensure that Black women have the opportunity to shine in the entertainment field, Black women and girls have made magnificent strides in owning their beauty, overcoming their self-doubt, and personifying what Black Girl Magic really means.
That little insecure girl from well over a decade ago still lives inside me. And while I thought she would haunt me for the rest of my life, it turns out that she is a special reminder of why celebrating Black History Month and Black Girl Magic is so important. For the first time in my entire life, I felt that insecure girl breathe a sigh of relief as I finally embraced her instead of being ashamed of her. In that moment, I decided that I would not only embrace my privilege of being a Black woman, I would do everything in my power to ensure that my little girl living inside me (and the insecure girl inside every other Black woman across the globe,) would never feel shameful again.
On this last day of Black History Month and as the world returns to its constant state of ignorance, I’d like to say a special thank-you to those that work tirelessly to make sure that girls like me are not only heard, but made to feel that they are indeed, worthy of praise. It’s absolutely okay to believe in your magic. The day that I decided to believe in mine – to accept it and relinquish the thought of it being a burden – I was free. And honestly, what’s better than being free?

wouldn't 'wanting him with a woman' be like super homophobic tho just the idea of someone seeing a m/m couple and thinking wow i wish i could see him with a woman is uncomfortable maybe i'm touchy also @ anon i'm pretty sure genderbends are transphobic anyway and like kareena said alec is gay so its gross to take that away plus making a same gender relationship hetero is kind of gross even tho magnus is bi i guess its little better than the other way around tho bc at least magnus likes women
Yeah, thank you anon, I knew I’d not expressed everything that I disagreed with about genderbending characters. (Re: you last point people rarely genderbend Mangus, they just ship him with white women like Clary and Lydia…)
shonda-rhimes replied to your post:Whats your opinion on the people who ‘genderbend’…
“genderbend” is also sometimes v cissexist bc of the frequent equating of gender expression with gender identity ! the characters happen to always be “genderbent” as a cisnormative counterpart :/ but yeah in this context since alec is strictly gay it seems off
Thank you! I’ll make sure to remember this if it crops up again. I appreciate this.
