Month One
A little over a month ago I arrived in Montpellier, a bustling university city nestled in the sunny south of France. Exhausted from my flight and running on my last reserves of energy, I stood in the Place de la Comédie right in the historic center, marvelling at the place that I was to call home for the next four months. The slight breeze whirled around me, carrying with it an unfamiliar scent of fresh pastries and subtle hints of cigarette smoke (yes that stereotype is true!) and the sound of French street music. Google “street view” had not done this place justice and I felt like I was utterly and entirely in a dream.
Tumblr media
Fast forward a few days and settling into French life has been surprisingly easy for me. The stereotypes are definitely true, and my life here is filled with cheese, bread and regional wine which in most places is cheaper than water! My host family take impeccable care of me and keep me engaged and definitely well-fed around a dynamic dinner table. My host mom is Italian, my host dad is French through and through and my fellow exchange student host sister is Mexican. An international group indeed, what unites us around the table is our shared knowledge of French. Despite my hesitations before arriving in Montpellier, I am so thankful that I chose to do a homestay. My knowledge and confidence in the French language is increasing every day and I am being completely immersed in French life and culture. I live in a small picturesque apartment, a short walk away from the centre of town. This makes getting around extremely easy for me, for which I am grateful because public transport has never been my forte! Although, over the past few weeks, I have surprised myself and mastered the tramline in the city.

Outside my apartment, inexcusably French!

I take almost all of my courses with other American and Australian exchange students. Most of these course are focused on ameliorating our French speaking and writing skills. I have been finding these courses a bit tiresome and repetitive at times, and enjoy my classes with French students as they are more engaging and challenging. Not needing any credits for my Psychology major abroad, I decided to try something completely out of my comfort zone and enrolled in a introductory classical film analysis course, with a focus on Japanese cinema. The first few lessons were absolutely daunting, sitting in a lecture hall with over 200 French students, who were either experts in film studies and furiously typed notes for the full 1 hour and 30 minutes or, who were disinterested and chatted to their friends the entire time. The lecturer spoke faster than I could type, and my pages of notes were a conglomeration of arbitrary French words strung together meaninglessly. However, our academic coordinator for the University of Minnesota’s program had forewarned us this would be a typical experience, and so, I persevered until my note finally made some kind of sense. Now, just short of a month into my classes, I am thoroughly enjoying them. Although I may not get all of the lecture, I find that each week I understand and can keep up more and more, and this is exciting for me!
Throughout this month, I have been able to do quite a bit of traveling around both with my program and with some friends I have made whilst being here. We have visited many places near Montpellier with a rich history of Roman rule, and further afield, I have spent weekends in Bordeaux and Barcelona. I love how easy it is to get around here, most times a beautiful city lies just a bus or train ride away!

Although I am enjoying traveling and taking in as much of the surrounding areas and cities I can during my time here, I have been trying hard to appreciate and explore the place that I am calling home this semester. Montpellier truly is an incredible place, with great food, people, nightlife and a profound cultural history. Each week I try and spend at least one day alone exploring and finding hidden gems. I enjoy this time, as through my program and living with a host family I find myself constantly surrounded by people. Although I love being socially active, I also enjoy my space and solo time to reflect and appreciate my immediate surroundings. Recently, I spent a day art gallery hopping, viewing works from an international artist and a local one. Andy Summers, a band member in The Police, has a photography exhibition which is on show at one of the larger galleries. A little walk into the historic centre is a gallery housing Oliver Scher’s photographs, a Montpellier local with an interest in capturing the way people interact with music at festivals.
Overall, the first month has flown by. I am so happy here, and even happier that this happiness has come so easy. I have great faith that these next three months will hold so much good and positivity for me!

Crowded 43rd Ward Race A Vital One As Lincoln Yards Looms Over Neighborhood
LINCOLN PARK – After a close call in 2015, Ald. Michele Smith (43rd) is on much better footing as the campaign for her third term ramps up, her office said.
But that hasn’t stopped a crowd of candidates from entering the race.
The 43rd ward is an affluent one, undergoing significant economic development with both Lincoln Commons and the massive Lincoln Yards development. Still, crime — including recent carjackings — and traffic congestion are among the top issues according to residents.
Smith has everything an incumbent could hope to have: name recognition in the community, a large campaign war chest of more than $275,000 and deep ties to Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other Chicago heavy hitters. A poll released in September showed she would win 53 percent of the vote when put up against the other announced candidates.
But those candidates say there is still time for them to make a case to voters, and some have already raised enough money to stay competitive.
Derek Lindblom
Derek Lindblom
Already raising more than $265,000, Derek Lindblom has the biggest campaign war chest of any Smith challenger. With campaign backers like former Deputy Mayors Steve Koch and Mark Angelson and businessman Matthew Pritzker (cousin to soon-to-be Gov. JB Pritzker), Lindblom is considered to be a significant threat to Smith.
With more than 170 donations — and no amount higher than $5,600 — the Harvard graduate has more individual contributions than his other challengers.
Previously, he was chief of staff for Emanuel’s economic counsel, where he “helped government run more efficiently.”
“I think with the mayor not running, we need someone who is going to have creative policy,” he said. “We need someone who is going to fight for efficiency.”
Lindblom said he has a clear track record of “cutting through the red tape” and he believes that he has significant experience in both the private and public sector to make that happen.
Lindblom is also a venture capitalist who invests in health technology, and said technology could be used to solve some of the biggest issues facing the city.
“We have had too many instances of a criminal committing multiple crimes that could have been stopped with the proper technology,” he said, adding that we could be using traffic cameras to track down stolen vehicles.
When it comes to Lincoln Yards, Lindblom echoed what’s been said at community meetings, citing the need to avoid congestion and add green spaces.
“Let’s make sure we are getting a ton of park space for our community,” he said. “If we are not thoughtful about putting improvements in place, I think we are going to regret it.
Lindblom aims to run a positive campaign, saying that an alderman needs to bring people together and “bring fun to the community.” He said that things like ward bike rides, senior walks and block parties can be extremely valuable to the community.
“I’m a very positive person,” he said. “The more this race is about the people in this community, the better my campaign will do.”
Leslie Fox
Leslie Fox with volunteers.
Leslie Fox For 43rd Ward / Facebook
Candidate Leslie Fox said she wants to bring “common sense policy” to Chicago Public Schools and beyond.
Fox has been deeply ingrained in Chicago politics for more than two decades, and although she may not have instant name recognition, she is well known in political circles. She worked with Mayor Richard M. Daley and helped coordinate the World Cup in 1994 and the Democratic National Convention in 1996.
She describes herself as being heavily involved with her family and is proud of her Jewish heritage. Fox is a self-described “politics and news junkie” and her family still gets four print newspapers delivered to their home each morning.
Her campaign reported over $151,000 — $45,000 of which came from her own pocket and $45,000 more from her father, Shayle Fox.
Fox is particularly passionate about Chicago Public Schools and she said it is one of the major reasons she felt compelled to enter the race in a very competitive ward.
“You have to fund your public schools,” she said. “You can’t be building new schools without funding the ones that are there and that work.”
Fox said she is proud of the progress parents have made through their “tireless work” with the schools, but the city is “not doing enough.”
Fox plans to rely heavily on her political circle, which runs deep throughout the city. Her husband Bill Griffin was previously an aid to former Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne, and has been a long-time player in Chicago politics.
The longtime politico is not running his wife’s campaign, however.
Fox also has complicated ties to Emanuel. She is a personal friend of Emanuel’s wife, Amy Rule, and worked with him on Daley’s early campaigns. However, she endorsed Chuy Garcia over Emanuel during the 2015 mayoral election, which surprised many.
“People had told me, ‘expect a lot of money coming to keep you out,’” she said. “So I suppose that’s going to be coming. But I wish Rahm well and I don’t think his political career is over by any stretch.”
Fox said that “crime has become a very real problem” in the 43rd ward. She referenced the recent string of armed robberies and carjackings that have occurred in Lincoln Park and said she has family and friends that have been affected.
Fox said too many police officers in the area get moved to higher-crime neighborhoods.
Concerning the pension crisis, Fox believes that Emanuel’s current proposal to borrow billions in bonds from investment bankers is “kicking the can down the road.”
When it comes to the massive Lincoln Yards development Fox said “there has to be a win for Lincoln Park.” Like the other candidates, she said she’s concerned with congestion and the “lack of park spaces” in the ward.
“I’m not against development,” she said. “But the congestion in Lincoln Park has become landlocked.”
The last 43rd ward election was widely-considered to be a nasty — and expensive — one and although Fox hopes to stick to the issues she said she is unafraid of dirty politics.
“I’ve worked in politics for 25 years,” she said. “Bring it.”
Jacob Ringer
Jacob Ringer
Jacob Ringer is one of the lesser known 43rd ward challengers, but he is in no way unfamiliar to politics — his father ran for alderman in 1967 and lost in a runoff election. His campaign recently opened a headquarters on Halsted Street and a black and white photo of his father on the campaign trail is proudly displayed in the office.
Ringer previously served as president of the Lincoln Park Zoo Auxiliary Board and as chief of staff to former city Chief Financial Officer Lois Scott.
Ringer provided his campaign with an early shot in the arm, campaign finance reports show he gave his campaign $90,000 in June. As of Monday, his campaign has more than $115,ooo in the bank. Why run? Ringer said he wants to battle “unattended bureaucracy” and government inefficiency.
“My job is to advocate for the neighborhood and to understand how the city works, and make it work better.”
Ringer said a digital billboard project he came up with while working for the city highlights his “creative solutions” to city revenue issues.
“Those digital billboards are projected to bring in $200 million in 20 years without cutting services or raising taxes,” he said.
And while he did work for the city, his ties to Emanuel are minimal. He said he wants our next mayor to be more “accessible.”
Another focus of Ringer’s campaign is economic development, particularly vacant storefronts.
When it comes to Lincoln Yards, Ringer said it “isn’t a yes or no,” but rather about determining how to “accommodate growth.” He said the main issue should be building an East West bridge in order to provide easy access to the expressways.
“We should be talking more about infrastructure, and parks are a part of that,” he said.
Ringer hopes that the campaign does not turn negative.
“That really was a personal and brutal election,” he said in reference to the 2015 election.
Ringer said that although he hopes everyone is able to stick to the issues, he is not naive to the arena he has stepped into.
“My eyes are open,” he said. “This ain’t stickball.”
Matthew Roney
Matthew Roney is 22 years old and will soon be graduating with a bachelors degree in political science from DePaul University. He originally declared his candidacy to run for mayor, but has since decided to run for alderman instead. He admitted that he “did not have the infrastructure in place to sustain a mayoral campaign.”
Why run? Crime, Roney said. Though residents have reported feeling less safe, police say crime is actually down in the area, one of the safest wards in Chicago.
“I am tired of walking past caution tape and vacant lots,” he said.
Roney said he originally came to Chicago with plans to study medicine, but after witnessing firsthand the high price of medication, he decided to run for office. Roney believes that his lack of experience is actually a good thing.
“I am not corrupt and I do not owe any corporations or politicians anything,” he said.
Roney plans to run a campaign heavily based on social media and viral marketing tactics.
 Steve McClellan
Steve McClellan
Provided
After being knocked off the ballot in 2015 for not having enough valid signatures, Steve McClellan is ready to run again. This time, he said he is better equipped for a campaign.
“You have to always be on point,” he said.
A 36-year-old Old Town resident with a business background on the Chicago Board of Trade, McClellan describes himself as a “happy but concerned neighbor.”
McClellan said that he would bring a “fresh perspective” to City Hall. He said the 43rd ward is not being properly utilized and under his leadership he would provide economic opportunity, not just for the ward, but for the entire city.
“We live in a powerful ward,” he said. “It seems like the current administration doesn’t realize the political influence they could have.”
When it comes to crime, he said more investment in youth is the answer.
“We need to be more strategic,” he said, adding that more after school programs could help prevent much of the petty theft that has been occurring in the ward.
McClellan knows he has a long way to go, as his fundraising efforts have just begun and he is far behind his other opponents when it comes to money. But he hopes his experience as an organizer helps.
“I’m just going to keep shaking hands and getting to know people,” he said. “My platform is about the conversations I’ve had with neighbors.”
Rebecca Janowitz
Attorney Rebecca Janowitz, a Special Assistant for Legal Affairs for the Cook County Justice Advisory Council, has no reported campaign cash on hand and faces formidable challengers, but said she is “not worried” about the money — she wants to connect with 43rd ward voters.
“This is a ward that pays attention,” she said. “I’m going to have a chance to show voters my policy in the upcoming debates.”
Janowitz, who once served as a special assistant to Cook County Board President (and mayoral candidate) Toni Preckwinkle, thinks that the ward needs to pay more attention to “housekeeping items,” such as noise pollution from construction sites or parking issues. She said the spike in crime within the ward can be mitigated through “better communication and collaboration with police.”
Janowitz said that one of the big challenges of the 43rd ward is “voters who don’t actually vote in the ward.” She said she will target her campaign exclusively to those she believes “will actually show up on election day.”

The End of Avatar + Birth of the Alt-Weekly in Boston - PART ONE
Note: If you are unfamiliar with the story of how the Avatar newspaper formed, or its run-ins with classic Boston censorship, you may want to catch up. Our story starts here as the tensions between the Valley editors (those who wanted to publish an eclectic underground newspaper covering a myriad of topics) and the Hill folks (members of the Fort Hill Community who wanted the paper to chronicle their way of life and the thoughts of Mel Lyman) come to a head. The early story is in the book, but also plenty of places online too.
Fifty years ago this month, the final "authorized" issue of the controversial underground newspaper, Avatar, hit the streets of Boston. The front cover's message was clear: stay away from Mel Lyman and this is *our* newspaper.
Tumblr media
Issue #24 was a shock to the Valley editors of Avatar as well as readers. The paper was usually chock full of essays, reporting and ads. Here we see, in issue 24, page after page of layouts devoid of text, only pics of community member Alison in the middle of an LSD trip. It was...unexpected.
Tumblr media
FHC member Michael Kindman recalled, “What appeared in Issue Number 24 could only be interpreted as Mel and the Hill thumbing their noses at the other members of the Avatar alliance, challenging them to get with the Hill's program or split. I remember finding it embarrassing taking the new issue out on the streets to sell, somewhat at a loss to explain to readers why the format had changed so dramatically, so suddenly. But I guess I accepted the challenge, another early opportunity to face difficulty and let go of old ideas in Mel's name.”
Around a large table at 4 Fort Ave Terrace, soon after the publication of issue 24, the two parties tensely gathered around to discuss the goal of the newspaper. Charles Giuliano represented the Valley contingent, Mel Lyman, of course, spoke for the Hill people. Here were two old friends—they had gone on road trips together, once shared the same girlfriend, and reached astronomical levels of intoxication together at Richard Alpert’s house in Newton—now face to face as bitter opponents.
There was no compromise, but there was a capitulation. The valley writers could continue publishing a newspaper, but they were no longer to use the name Avatar. That was fine with Charles Giuliano, who went immediately to work on a new paper. Issue 25 ended up containing all the best elements of non-Mel Avatar. “I decided to put no logo on the cover,” Giuliano recalled, “I designed it as an I Ching hexagram which we threw as a group...It all felt very holistic and pure.”
During layout of the issue, Ed Beardsley, who was constantly on and off the Fort Hill Community bandwagon, made the curious decision to place a reversed Avatar logo on the inside cover. An off-again and on-again relationship with a woman on Fort Hill had made Beardsley's precise allegiance difficult to pinpoint at any given time. “[Ed] had some kind of deceptive explanation,” Giuliano said of the reversed logo. “I was too exhausted to grasp his full intent.” Readers who held up the cover of issue 25 to any source of light would then see the Avatar logo seep through the paper, like a hidden code indicating that the paper was still, secretly, The Avatar. The first person to catch it was the printer at American Colony printing plant in Worcester. Noticing the peculiarities of the issue, he called up editor and FHC member Brian Keating asking, “Is this paper Avatar or not?”
“It's not, why?” Keating asked.
Tumblr media
“The Avatar logo is on the 2nd page,” the printer informed him. Keating was stunned. This was now war. “I was revulsed,” he later wrote in an issue of the New York Avatar, “For nearly two hours I sat almost catatonic until David Gude and Eben [Given] came in.” Just a few weeks earlier, Eben Given had punched Keating in the face onstage at Club 47, but this direct action apparently had cleared the air of the particulars of the unspecified gripe, and now the two began working together again against a common enemy. Keating had an idea that they could order extra copies of the new issue of New York Avatar for distribution in Boston, but David Gude had a better plan: the Fort Hill Community should seize the unauthorized Avatar issue before it hits the streets. “Eben's eyes were burning, and David for the first time in weeks had life in his dour face,” Keating recalled of the moment they came up with the plan for the heist. “We got all the men up and went to the office...with a small fleet of vehicles.” In Michael Kindman's recollection, it was Lyman who ordered the heist: “Mel was furious. In retaliation, he ordered his 'boys' to take action.”
On May 11th, 1968 at 4:30AM, the heist began. The Fort Hill Community cars quietly rolled down Columbus Avenue in the pre-dawn darkness; the South End office was only two miles away from Roxbury. A run of 45,000 issues had just arrived at the 37 Rutland Street. Brian Kelly, a Valley-contributor to Avatar, was somehow alerted to the situation and began filming and snapping photographs as soon as the “Fort Hill Mob,” as he'd later refer to them in the Boston Free Press, arrived on the scene. Inside, the only staff present was Pebbles, the man whose unannounced Fort Hill visit had inspired the creation of the wall seen being built on the cover of issue 24; Pebbles was either working extremely late or secretly living at the Avatar office.
Below: Pebbles.
Tumblr media
Pebbles “managed to stall them for several minutes in conversation,” but eventually the mob started loading every issue of the paper, still hot from the presses, and a good deal of the expensive printing equipment into their cars. Pebbles began making phone calls. Charles Giuliano's first move was to notify the police, who proceeded to laugh at him when they heard what had happened to his precious, controversial underground newspaper. The fleet of Fort Hill cars drifted back up to Highland Park, where they locked up 45,000 issues of the faux-Avatar inside the Cochituate Standpipe—the tower—which had been secured by their own personal padlock for over a year at this point, despite being official city of Boston property. As they loaded the confiscated papers into the tower, Michael Kindman recalled an uneasy feeling: “I remember having to simply put my own free-press, pro-constitution values out of my mind in order to tune in to the adventurous spirit of the raid and the camaraderie of working with the other Fort Hill men on something that was obviously important to them. Was this a sellout or a betrayal, or was this an oblique way of protecting the truth?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Giuliano was devastated to see weeks of his hard work stolen and locked away. He told Brian Keating that he was a fascist and “worse than a police censor.” “Of course he was right, using the conventional terms,” Keating noted, making it clear that, nevertheless, their actions were not illegal. “I am the duly chosen editor of Avatar and am responsible for any publication bearing that name,” he wrote in New York Avatar issue #5.
“You're breaking my heart, Brian,” Giuliano said.
“I know, Charlie.”
Giuliano had worked hard to make issue #25 a piece of art. Now, nearly every copy had been destroyed. Issue 25 centerfold, which is quite beautiful --->
Tumblr media
"For the better part of a week there were negotiations, threats, scenes," Giulianio told Rolling Stone's David Felton. "Fort Hill invited us all up for a big steak dinner at [Jim] Kweskin's house, and we tried to iron it all out.” But the dark secret of the evening was that the outcome of this meeting had already been predetermined by Mel Lyman before anyone had shown up for supper. As the two parties negotiated, Michael Kindman and some other community members removed issue 25 from the tower, drove it down the street, and sold it for scrap paper. An expensive print job was converted into thirty-five bucks. Back at Fort Hill, Brian Kelly set up a projector to run his film of the heist to prove what had happened, but this only upset Lyman who abruptly ended the meeting before it could be screened. At the end of dinner, the Valley editors were informed about what had just happened to issue 25. The message was clear: if the Lyman Family wasn't going be part of Avatar, there would be no Avatar.
“They were talking about [the destruction of the issue] for months in Boston,” Liberation News Service's Ray Mungo wrote in his memoir Famous Long Ago.
"It was at that point I realized,” Charles Giuliano told Rolling Stone, “we were dealing with very dangerous people."
After the shock of this coup wore off, both sides consulted lawyers and bickered with each other in the letters section of the New York Avatar employing a bizarre writing style reminiscent of counts and dukes. “Charlie, great arts comes only from great men,” Keating addressed Giuliano in NY Avatar #5, “what matters pain today if we fathom a further dimension of ourselves and tomorrow we create an art greater for it?” Giuliano's girlfriend Arden Harrison shot back, “John, it was most ungallant of you to publish such false accusations.” Guiliano: “I cannot for the moment regard you with either warmth or friendship.” New York readers, who simply could not have been as aware of Fort Hill drama as Bostonians, must have found the whole thing quite baffling.
What happened next requires a visual aid, as to not be needlessly confusing.
Tumblr media
Out of all of these Avatar-publications, American Avatar would be the last one standing. Dave Wilson quit Avatar II early summer '68 to refocus on Broadside of Boston (which had now merged with another paper called The Boston Free Press). “I had hoped that in helping to create Avatar that it would address the social political arena and Broadside could concentrate on the music,” Wilson later wrote. “It did not work out that way.”
With Dave Wilson no longer by his side, Charles Giuliano couldn't keep Avatar II going on his own for much longer. He went on to work for Boston After Dark, and then The Herald Traveler. “My girlfriend [Arden] accused me of selling out when I did that,” Giuliano tells me, “which perhaps I did. But I had this idea about earning my own money.” He adds sarcastically, “What a dumb idea. As I said at the time your were a rich hippie or joined a commune/ cult. It was better to starve.”
Below, Giuliano holding the 1971 issue of Rolling Stone in which his former friend was on the cover, and which he was quoted extensively under the pseudonym, Harry Bikes.
