Hello! I wanted to create my own skin for hollow knight too! But I don't understand which sprites to change and in what order... Can you help? Thanks in advance! <3
I'm assuming you've already installed the Custom Knight mod, as its required to use your skins in-game. If you look at the default folder in the mod, you'll see all the sprite sheets you can change as well as what the sheets need to be named. Now for making the skin, I recommend joining the hollow knight discord server. Both the main server and the modding server will have the latest resources for skin making, including links to sprites, tutorials, and programs that will help you with the sprite order and packing them into the sprite sheets. You can also ask questions there to fellow skin makers and mod devs if you get confused or need some help.
Personally I use the following to make skins: GoDump - this mod dumps the individual sprites and puts them in order for you. You only need to use this if you're making a skin for anyone besides the knight though, as all the knight sprites have already been dumped and can be found in the modding-discussion pins of the HK discord. SpritePacker - this program helps turn the individual sprites back into a sprite sheet. There is another program called custom knight creator that also does this, but this is my preferred one as its more stable and can pack any sheet, where as the other option will crash if you try to pack any sheet not related to the knight. Again, tutorials and guides to this program are in the modding-discussion pins in the discord. Krita - the art program I use. Any program that can handle transparency works, but this one is free and a fantastic choice even for those not on a budget.
Skin making is definitely a test of patience and dedication. The sprite sheets can be a little intimidating due to the sheer number of sprites you'll need to do, but don't worry. Just keep at it a little bit each week and you'll find yourself at the finish line before you know it. Good luck!

hello friends. i make a webcomic called dreamyverse, which is released in full chapters on neocities, but i'd really appreciate the support on patreon to help continue being able to publish it and support myself! i'm also open for commissions and am open for tips on ko-fi!
here's what you'll find on the dreamyverse patreon:
🎨concept art, sprites, CGs, and any other artwork with spoilers for the upcoming chapter (next is chapter 4!)
💻scripting playtests that patrons can test and interact with
🎀monthly early access pixel + wallpaper freebies
⏬sai, psd, krita, aseprite, pxtone, + etc. files for art and music
🎮integrated discord role for the dreamyverse server, where you can talk spoilers all you like in the patron channel, and join art streams!
i'm currently unemployed, and am disabled with POTS, osteoarthritis in my spine, autism, and likely schizophrenia, among other things which i'm in treatment for. i'm looking at another year or longer of no disability income due to my case being rejected, so i don't have any other current income besides art.
i hope you will consider pledging to my patreon and joining the fun, though! 👉👈 i have a lot of plans for dreamyverse. if our patreon hits $100, i'll make a dreamborn dress-up generator in html/js, and you'll get to see its creation during development!
