The Boy and the Heron Thoughts
Ooh, a male Miyazaki protagonist. Given what I've heard about this film as a self-reflective narrative, that makes sense.
There's a lot of implied details about the sorry state the rest of Japanese society is in — the shortages on canned goods, the broken down train station — but we're never actually shown any of it.
The fish (?) cutting seen is *so* beautifully animated. As a gore enjoyer it gets many thumbs ups from me
There's a lot of interesting animation of painted background elements (you know, the stuff that's usually static in anime). I noticed this some of this when watching Spirited away recently, and it's clear that whatever technology/techniques they're use to make that happen. I'd love to learn more about that.
I wanna watch this movie again. It's good.

fondly thinking of childe once again. soft thoughts round three let's go:
everything this man knows about romance is from the romance novels he secretly reads in his spare time. i just know in my heart of hearts that this man, as much of a hopeless romantic that he is, is not suave at all.
he's charming, yes. he's sweet and polite and maybe a little flirty, but beyond that? he is so endearingly awkward. he confidently says the cheesiest lines whenever he gets the chance, does all sorts of "swoon-worthy" acts he's read male leads do in his favorite novels, but as soon as you so much as acknowledge his efforts with one of those smiles he loves so much this man is gone. he immediately flushes the moment he sees your sweet smile and unsuccessful attempts at hiding your laughter. (childe doesn't feel butterflies in his stomach. no, he feels the whole damn zoo with how giddy he gets whenever he does something that makes you smile.)
childe thinks that maybe he should feel a little hurt that you're laughing at his heartfelt attempts at wooing you ("come on, i'm being serious here!") but, well, you're so cute when you laugh... and the way your eyes crinkle or even fully close when you can't hide behind your shaking hands anymore... okay. maybe he can let this slide. just this once. for now. he'll get his payback soon, he swears!
(he's lying btw. you get away with what other folk essentially view as "insulting the eleventh harbinger" every time, and he always watches you with the same lovestruck smile. you never notice, of course, since you're so busy laughing and trying to convince him that no, no, i swear i'm not making fun of you! but honey, everyone's got eyes. everyone knows. and all the wise grannies and grandpas just tut and shake their heads fondly, murmuring to themselves about "the joys of young love.")

talk about your adeline. right now. this is a threat
OOOUUAUUUAA you have opened the pandora’s box.
ok firstly i love the idea of adeline being a big sister. the siblings u draw for her are UNPARALLELED. i will draw them if god is willing because man. like why try to improve on something that is already perfect. every day i think of the littlest one wearing maria’s boot and going :D
i like to imagine she grew up on a farm, so she knows loads about how to take care of plants and animals. adeline would totally keep chickens or rabbits under better circumstances, but her duties as a blood saint take up a lot of time.
i’ve always seen adeline as playing a large role in looking after her siblings along with her mother. the family fell on hard times financially, and they move to the city which becomes cathedral ward. adeline is able to help support her family by becoming a nun, and is eventually groomed as a blood saint. i think she and maria likely met around this time :)
adeline is capable in folk medicine, but her training to become a saint taught her lots about traditional medicine as well. under pressure, she is a natural leader, able to take quick, decisive action — these skills combined have saved lives.
flowerpatch is her service dog, and she trained him herself to assist her with all sorts of things. aside from helping adeline get around, patch helps her identify plants and medical supplies. he’s able to fetch specific tools for her — don’t worry though. he has little gloves to avoid cross contamination and he always washes his paws :)
the other nuns help too! adeline sewed flowerpatch an apron of sorts, so if patch indicates something she needs, one of the other sisters can put it in his little pocket!
adeline is also quite artistic! she finds particular comfort in embroidery, because of all the different textures she can feel. flowerpatch’s apron is covered in pretty patterns.
i hc adeline as autistic as well! she’s always humming to herself while she works, and the textures of her embroidery serve as a comforting stim. flowerpatch isn’t just a seeing-eye dog, he’s also an emotional support animal who comforts her if she’s overwhelmed.
when i think about adeline, i imagine her as an incredibly intelligent and compassionate person, who is strong enough to build community even in hard times — it just makes it all the more tragic what becomes of her.

CHOUJIN X Chapter 40, Thoughts
Post timeskip the plot is quickly picking up from chapter to chapter. While the majority of this chapter is just spent with Tokio investigating with his new team, there’s some interesting ideas introduced on the other sie of the story, following Batista and Palmia the choujin with the ability to bring others back to life. More thoughts underneath the cut.
Homo Superior
Choujin X borrows a lot from X-Men. It’s in the title if you haven’t noticed. Including the fact that society is changed by a small number of people in the population suddenly gaining superpowers through a randomly given genetic mutation.
Even the concept of “Choujin X” itself, the strongest of all choujins who is rumored to have the ability to shape the world most likely comes from comic book concepts like “omega level mutants” and the character “apocalypse” who often shows up in a villain in the x-men stories as the first mutant who possesses power greater than any other mutant.
I’m not saying Ishida ripped off X-Men or anything along those lines, but the two works share a lot in common that they merit comparison. X-Men’s most famous villain Magneto is a former holocaust victim turned mutant who believes in mutant supremacy. This is a vast oversimplification of Magneto’s beliefs, but more or less he believes that humans will inevitably fear and try to oppress mutants with their superior numbers while they’re still in the minority, but that mutants are actually the next step in human evolution and will rise up to replace them.
It’s less that Magneto believes that mutants are inherently superior, but rather he fights for the liberation of mutants as he believes humans will inevitably always try to oppress them out of fear. The classic comparison (which is again an oversimplification) is that Charles Xavier was Martin Luther King, and Magneto is written as Malcolm X. Magneto supports the idea of Mutant’s finding liberation separate from human society rather than blending in with humans as he doesn’t believe the two can mix.
Choujin X is also a story which depicts a conflict between an organization that regulates Choujins and the use of their power so they can blend into a society where they are a minority, and a group of radical choujin who exist outside of that society. With Yamato Mori currently being the enforcers of that order regulating which Choujin are permitted to use their powers, and punishing those who use their powers without permission.
However, while X-Men takes place in what is mostly our world just with mutants thrown in, Choujin X exists in what is called a “nationless world.”
Tumblr media
In the past around world war one in our time the War Choujin Queem led a military coup using a batallion of all Choujins, and then after seizing control of his nation went to war with all of his neighboring countries, including the pacific asian theatre. This sparked countries to deploy choujin as literal super soldiers which pushed a war that suprassed all wars. Even when Queem died the wars did not cease which caused every nation in the world to collapse, and the only way society has survived is through a series of self-governing prefectures which I assume operates like city-states.
Post canon we learn not all of these city-states operate as lawfully as the Yamato Prefecture. There are places like Iwato that are run by Warlord like Choujin instead who wield absolute power.
Tumblr media
Not only that but an extra in the first volume reveals that history has been shaped time and time again, by choujin with special powers rising into the ranks of leadership. Apparently in this world Julius Caesar was counted among the Choujin if him appearing in this extra is to be believed.
Tumblr media
That is to say Choujin are inidviduals who have a great ability to disrupt or change the society they are a part of, the existence of Choujins being used in war ended up bringing an end to all nations in the world. It seems like the only reason they aren’t completely dominating the world is because they’re vastly outnumbered. Therefore, this chapter posits what would happen if Choujin were no longer 1/1000.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which asks the question if Choujin were to no longer be the minority, then what would happen to regular humans? Would they be obsolete now and replaced by Choujin entirely?
That might just be like Magneto, the aim of people like Batista and Zora’s followers in spreading around a drug that can awaken Choujins.
Tumblr media
We might be one step closer to understanding what exactly Batista’s goals are in allying with Zora. As so far Zora’s followers just seem to be a bunch of eccentrics with odd dreams abusing their powers as Choujin on innocent people, simply because they have those powers, and believe in individual right of the strong, but as the story progresses we might see their more complex motivations. In Chapter 37 one of her followers suggests that Zora is currently the only one giving a safe-haven to outcasts like them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which further suggests we might be building up to this sort of Charles Xavier vs. Magneto storyline when it comes to the beliefs of the heros and villains, that Yamato Mori believes in oppressing the rights of individual Choujin in order to create a society safer for normal humans who make up the majority, and then the choujin who are the radical outsiders of the society who want to dissolve that society’s rules.

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works Route, Day 10 Thoughts
"Half the body paralyzed" is a crazy chapter name lmao
And yeah, it goes without saying that that all plays into Shirou's self-sacrificing nature.
I like Rin's statement that Shirou is fine as he is. It directly refutes his desire to be like Kiritsugu and further establishes that this route is different from Fate.
Rin's take on her own life is much the same: although she was set down this path by the expectations of others, she follows it because of her own desire. That's pretty different from Saber. The fact that Rin's the romantic interest this time illustrates how she will reflect on Shirou.
Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah and Rin is even confused that Shirou's reasons are different from hers. Love the contrasts going on here.
And even when Shirou tries to pursue his own magic, he just feels like he's copying Archer, since following someone else's guide is the only way he's ever felt.
Can you tell I haven't read many VNs? This type of narrative structure might be more common than I realize, but for me at least it's very novel.

the writer[s?] for lethal league is either really good or really fucking bad [it's a fighting game so almost certainly the latter] because im trying to puzzle through doombox's general existence as a character and nothing about him makes any fucking sense. he's either got a hell of a hidden story or they just don't care
also aside from that my actual biggest question in all of this is, what the entire fuck is going on with dice? there are like 12 separate things about him that are both baffling and highly alarming

every now and again I get bent out of shape all over again about what a perfect metaphor inside out is for depression and how they still wouldn’t go there
riley loses interest in everything that previously rooted her and gave her enthusiasm. even the things she loved most like hockey seem pointless and exhausting and frustrating. she pushes her friends and family away. the inside of her mind is dead and everything that once brought her joy is now tinged with the knowledge that it can never be like that again.
pixar is garbage obvs and i’m glad that people are finally starting to understand that instead of just offloading it like “oh DISNEY is bad but PIXAR is good” but I remain stunned at how me.txt riley’s interest lobes or whatever going dim and grey and her losing touch with the things she loved is
anyway there’s your serious thoughtspost for the day
