ever since new york // chess & joey

New York could get pretty lonely at the best of times. It wasn't as though Chess had any family here (they were all tucked away in sunny Sydney and rarely returned her calls), or even friends that weren't other Mums at Hazel's school. She couldn't remember the last time she'd been on a night out, or, God forbid, a date. The closest thing she had to a friend was Joey, a pretty and scatterbrained girl she had first spotted walking around her neighbourhood. Chess wasn't sure she would have given her a second thought if it weren't for the fact Joey had lifted her head, and actually hit Chess with a wide smile. She'd even spotted her a few times with a camera crew in tow. After a few shared smiles and chance encounters at various coffee shops, Chess had found her feet and simply said hello (helped, of course, by Hazel's extremely forthcoming personality). They'd struck up a tentative friendship ever since, and Chess was especially thankful for Joey's offer to watch Hazel whenever needed.

Sitting in front of the full-length mirror in her bedroom, Chess tentatively twisted a brunette curl around her finger. She'd killed an hour or so curling her hair, applying a full face of make up and attempting to do the same with Hazel, before her daughter had huffily pulled away and plopped in front of the TV to watch Finding Nemo.

Well, there was only so much time she could spend in the company of her six year old.

Locating her phone amongst the mess of concealers, eyeshadow pallets and various tubes of lipstick, Chess blew a light dusting of powder from her phone screen and tentatively dialled Joey's number.

"Hello, Joey?" Chess started, "It's Chess - Francesca... Howard? You told me once or twice you'd be up for watching Hazel, are you free right now?"

Chess bit down on her bottom lip, having chickened out of her original reason for calling - did she want to hang out?

Scotty had been up all night, tossing and turning, his head pounding. He’d had a pretty good start to the New Year, his arms wrapped around Joey as the two had kissed as the clock struck midnight, giggling against each other’s mouths at the silliness of it all. She was a total sweetheart; somebody he was grateful Louis had introduced him to. She was Louis’ number one fan – with the exception of Max – and the two had carved out a home in each other’s hearts, one that the pretty girl had been more than gracious enough to invite Scotty into.  

The nights since his cheeky kiss with Joey had been a little less kind to him, his phone blowing up constantly with news alerts from CNN, the New York Times, and the like. He wasn’t specifically subscribed to any of them, but the news app on his phone seemed to think he wanted to hear from them – and more to the point, seemed to think he wanted constant google alerts regarding the everyday goings on of his ex-fiancée. Admittedly, he understood that Indra working with a giant such as Isaac Lancaster meant that there was no avoiding her presence anywhere you turned in New York City, but it still stung. He’d moved back to the city thinking he was healing, wanting familiar territory, only to have stumbled right into the lion’s den. 

All the same, he’d agreed to meet Joey for coffee, and he wasn’t about to let his lack of sleep get in the way of their plans. He was situated in a quiet corner of A Novel Idea, a tiny alcove that would allow them a little privacy, plants spilling down around them, surrounded by books by the dozen. Scotty felt too tired to be dealing with the hustle and bustle of the store, choosing this particular table in the hopes of gaining a little privacy. He’d phoned Joey to let her know exactly where he was seated, his friend insisting she was just a few blocks away. She’d been rambling on about how Micah’s sister was getting married, and he had a fitting that she’d just had to be present for – not by obligation, Scotty assumed, but merely because she couldn’t pass up the chance of seeing her “friend” looking handsome in a three-piece suit – and the two had gotten slightly held up. He didn’t mind, smiling fondly as he’d set down the phone on her. 

Reaching down, he tugged his beaten copy of Christopher Street out from his backpack, the pages frayed at the edges, a rainbow of sticky tabs protruding outwards, marking all the pages and passages he’d been so fond of. He found himself coming back to it regularly, the books on his shelves at home carelessly abandoned as he read and re-read Louis’ novel, a labour of love that clutched at Scotty’s chest and filled him with a pride he was certain he’d never be able to adequately put into words. 

His phone buzzed on the table, catching his attention, eyes straying from the pages of Lou’s book. He wondered if it was Joey, glancing over at it, his heart sinking when he saw just who was lighting up his phone.  

A text from Indra filled his lockscreen, the message simple and straight to the point: 

“Hey, Scott. Only just heard you’re in the city now. Perhaps we could up? Talk. This is Indra, by the way.” 

It was almost laughable to Scotty, that she thought he might not know. Even in the couple of years that had passed, he’d never deleted her number. It was a sad truth, but her face still filled his home screen, a photo of the two laughing at his book launch, Indra’s eyes trained solely on him. He couldn’t remember a time when he’d been happier, so he’d yet to find the courage to take it off. 

With one swipe of his thumb, he unlocked his phone, wondering if he should reply to her. Hell, he wasn’t even sure what he’d say – it was the first time since she’d left him that he’d heard from her personally. It was as simple as that for her; a text like no time had passed, a dagger to the open wound that Scotty had been so carefully tending to for the last two years. 

His attention strained as he heard the familiar sound of Joey’s voice, glancing up as the brunette rounded the corner, a warm and welcoming smile on her face. Hastily, he swiped away from the text and dropped his phone to the table with a thud, pushing to his feet as he pulled his friend into a great big bear-hug. 

“There’s my favourite girl!” he called out, his hold tightening just a touch as he lifted Joey off the ground, her feet dangling as he pressed a playful kiss to her cheek. 

Setting her down, the two untangled from one another and he slipped back into his seat, his eyes trailing back to his phone where he’d abandoned it. He winced as he realised he’d left it open on his home screen, the image of himself and his ex on show for all to see. Clumsily, Scotty slapped a hand down against the phone, his thumb tapping the lock button as he offered Joey an awkward smile. 

“So,” he cleared his throat, embarrassed and looking for a distraction. “What can I get you? I’m buying.”

Micah had seen the countless tweets and youtube comments, tiktoks and instagram reels, and even the occasional thinkpiece that declared he was unprofessional and undermined the honest, good work that Joey Claremont was doing, but he couldn’t help himself. Teasing his best friend and lightening the tone as they hunted ghost was kind of his thing, after all. He knew that the exasperated look on Joey’s face was one that remained fond and took no real stock in the things people had to say about him online. Well, okay, so maybe she’d once threatened to personally haunt instagram user @makeamericaghostagain after they’d ridiculed the traditional Nigerian garments he’d been wearing in a post from his sister’s wedding. Or when she’d insisted that she hoped prolific tweeter and Paranormal Happenings fanboy @joeyclaremontsrightdimple stepped on lego after he’d complained – at length – about the fact that Micah’s mom had spoken Yoruba to him over the phone in a brief cameo on the show. Joey as Micah’s biggest fan and absolute ride or die, which is exactly why she never let shitty little keyboard warriors stain her perspective of him. 

And it was yet another reason why he felt so at home teasing and taunting her, knowing the pair of them would come out on top and deliver some of their best content yet. 

“Hey, aliens can be ghosts too,” he grinned, before using his free hand to mime zipping his lips shut and securely locking them after she smacked his arm. He pouted at her, pretending the blow had been harsher than it was, before slowly panning the camera away from Joey once more and back across the room, hoping to catch a glimpse of even the faintest spectre. 

Light-footed and without so much as a peep from behind his camcorder, Micah followed Joey as they headed in the direction she’d suggested. His best friend called out nervously as she tried to draw out somebody, anybody, into their sphere. Truthfully, he wouldn’t mind if none of them ever made an appearance. They’d done enough research for him to know that word of YJR’s hauntings dated as far back as 156 years ago, and he didn’t feel so keen about bumping into the Whaley’s themselves either. For someone who actively participated in a tv show about haunted buildings and trying to coax out spirits, Micah thought he’d had more than his fair share of experiences with ghosts to last him a lifetime. 

A noise sounded suddenly, a huge crash as something collided with the ground, causing Joey to careen directly into him. The camera tilted ever so slightly in his fist as he leaned into Joey’s touch, but still remained steadily focused on the room, even if Micah’s own attention had strayed. His heart pounded in his chest as he felt Joey’s face press into his neck, his free hand wrapping securely around her waist, securing her against him. There was something warm and comforting about a cuddle from Joey, even if it was due to her current state of fear, her breathing ragged as she shook against his form. 

“I’ve got you, I’ve got you,” he soothed, his voice low as his words were soon cut off by the sound of Marty making an appearance. Micah’s eyes widened momentarily before he barked out a laugh, the sound catching in his throat as amusement mingled with nerves. He’d hardly allowed himself the chance to feel frightened or concerned with the prospect of an angry spirit coming to yell at him for an ill-advised nickname, all of his energy instead zeroing in on how warm Joey felt in his arms. Carefully, Micah planted a chaste kiss to Joey’s hair – camera pointed at Marty only, if only to avoid fans making mountains out of molehills for the umpteenth time – as she leaned against his shoulder, smiling down at her as she pulled away, flushed and looking a little embarrassed. 

“Hey, it could be worse, right? I’m pretty sure I’d much prefer to be down here dealing with the Whaley’s and YJR than up there listening to Jeff throw another hissy fit,” Micah shrugged, shooting Marty a reassuring wink. He’d have to cut that part out later, but he wouldn’t be totally bummed if Jeff ‘accidentally’ heard about it first. 

Joey raised an eyebrow at Micah’s greeting for any entity that might be sharing the room with them. Her eyes darted around in consideration before she threw a look at him over his shoulder.

“Micah, I think that greeting might actually be reserved for aliens,” she said, confident that was correct.

She pressed a hand to her chest as the spirit box she held kept on beeping. Abruptly, it cut out, leaving her breathing ragged, adrenaline coursing through her veins. Naturally, Micah was the one that recovered first, forever being the voice of reason while Joey’s imagination ran away with itself. 

Her jaw fell open as he addressed the room at large, calling Yankee Jim Robinson his nickname out loud. Swiftly, she backhanded his arm in warning before shaking her head with a pout, hoping that if the spirit of the centuries-old man was in the room, then he would understand that she was just as unhappy about Micah’s pet name as he was.

“It’s okay, Mr Yankee Jim,” she called out, still trembling a little. “I didn’t… you know… actually pee.”

It wasn’t Yankee Jim Robinson that she was worried about offending if she had soiled herself though. This wasn’t his house. Instead, she wondered: what would Mrs Whaley think? Would she burst through the doors in a ghostly rage, her famous green dress billowing behind her, ready to throw a teacup at Joey’s head? She shivered at the thought.

“We should head towards the front parlour,” she whispered loudly. As terrifying a prospect as it was to her, that room in particular was widely recognised as the most haunted bit of the entire Whaley home. It was where Yankee Jim Robinson had been executed before Mr Whaley had built the house from the ground up, so if there was going to be any sort of activity from YJR - gosh darn it, Micah! - then it would probably be there.

She beckoned Micah with her hand to follow her, double checking that the red recording light on the camera continued to flash. As they crept through the house, floorboards creaking underneath their weight, she couldn’t help but hold her breath as soon as they stepped into the parlour.

Once again, she lifted the spirit box. 

“Um…” She cleared her throat nervously. “If anyone in here answers to the name of Yankee Jim Robinson, can you please make yourself known?”

The ensuing silence was almost as scary as if there had been any response. Joey could practically feel the hairs on the back of her neck stand up as she white-knuckled the spirit box.

“Thomas Whaley?” she called. Nothing.

Swapping an unsure look with Micah, guilt sparking in her when she realised that she might have kept him from the warmth of his bed for a dud episode, she tried one more time.

“Anna Whaley?” she tried, her voice weak.

Suddenly, there was a clattering noise, like something heavy hitting the floor and Joey thought that her heart was about to erupt out of her chest from the sheer surprise of it. She jumped, blood thundering in her ears as she reacted and did the first thing she could think of, which was grabbing Micah by the lapel of his jacket and pulling him closer to her so she could cling onto him. 

Even in the midst of her terror, she was careful not to dislodge the camera from his grip as she did everything she could to practically crawl inside of his jacket. She held onto his shirt, pressing his face into his neck, the soothing and familiar scent of his cologne helping to calm her nerves as she trembled against him.

“Holy shit!” she swore, only for a stammering voice to pipe up from behind.

“Oh my god guys, I’m so sorry!” Joey turned, still a little twisted up in the material of Micah’s jacket, to see Marty standing in the archway from the back parlour, looking sheepish and nervous as he threw his hands up in surrender.

“Marty…” Joey breathed, wilting against Micah and tipping her head back against his shoulder.

“I thought you were a ghost,” she said, a little unnecessarily.

“No. Just a white guy with anemia,” Marty joked feebly, bending down to pick up the folder he’d dropped. Joey let out a weak laugh as she looked at Micah, realising just how much she’d gotten entangled with her friend.

“Sorry, sorry,” she apologised, finally pulling away from him, her fingers reaching up to sort the collar of his shirt where she’d all but yanked it down past his collar bones. She caught a flash of muscle, swelling towards his pecs for a moment before she quickly diverted her gaze and looked away, back towards Marty.

“How’s things upstairs?” she asked quickly.

Arguably for the first time in months, Amira laughed. It was a broken, startled sound, her throat and chest so unaccustomed to the notion of laughter, so distanced from any sort of scenario that might require it. And yet, there she was, laughing at something that Joey had said to her. Her cheeks blushed violently as she tried to gather her thoughts, the sound coursing through her light and taken aback. 

“A situationship?” she blundered, averting her gaze to stare down at her feet.  

Never in a million years had she ever expected herself to be in a scenario such as this. She thought of Matty, playful and high spirited as he was. She supposed if anybody was to label hers and Killian’s bizarre friendship as such, it would have been him, but even Matty hadn’t ever dared. She missed him, his presence calming, and guilt washed over her as she recalled every text and call that had gone ignored from the man. She thought he would like Joey, would enjoy her exuberant personality. She hoped, somehow, that they might meet. 

“I’d never really thought about it like that, I suppose,” she admitted, offering the other girl a meek smile. 

It was interesting for Amira to watch the other girl flounder over her words, concern filling her speech as she fretted over offending her. Amira’s feelings for Killian had never tinted her view, not in the way most people would expect. Her judgement could be clouded from time to time, but she was aware that others didn’t see the side of him that she did. She counted herself lucky to have such insight into the workings of his mind, a rare thing for him to ever let anybody in. His own wife had never had such luck. 

"He is intense, I know. He’s just... guarded.” She paused, hopelessly searching for the right way to describe him. “Killian is... reserved? But at heart he’s kind. He saved my life.” 

She sighed, sniffling as she held out her hand, taking the napkins from the other girl. She hadn’t meant to get emotional, had never even intended for this conversation to happen in the first place. She’d gotten sloppy, forging a routine she had no business in carrying out, her regular trips to see Simon a privilege she couldn’t quite afford. She dabbed at the corners of her eyes and offered Joey an appreciative smile. 

“I’m okay, really. I just... it’s family stuff, nothing to do with Killian,” she insisted, wanting to reassure the girl. 

She regretted her words instantly though, her brown furrowing as she stewed over her words of choice. Nobody knew about her family, and there was no reason for that to change now. In that past, she’d shared enough with Killian to paint a pretty picture, but never the full truth. He didn’t know where her family were, nor what had become of them, so she couldn’t let her guard down now. 

“Don’t tell Killian, though. If you see him,” she pressed, her words coming out too fast, too frantic. She winced and took a deep breath to compose herself. “Sorry. He just doesn’t know, and I’d rather he hear it from me?” 

When Amira placed a hand on Joey’s arm, she fought the urge to cover it with her own. That would be weird, wouldn’t it? And kind of intense seeing as the two women didn’t actually know each other all that well. That hadn’t stopped Joey from worrying though.

She knew she was a little bit too nosey for her own good sometimes. She had to constantly be reminded that other people’s business wasn’t her own, but she hated a mystery and just couldn’t leave anything well enough alone. It was probably a good thing that such a trait had been channeled towards exploring all things paranormal. That way, she was less likely to hurt anyone’s feelings. Anyone still living anyway. She still fretted about insulting a ghost or two, even though Micah still seemed to think there was no such thing.

Suddenly, Amira was assuring Joey that Killian was actually her boyfriend. Or something similar that lacked a label.

“So… a situationship? Or something?” she asked, tilting her head to the side.

Dating terminology never failed to confuse the absolute bejesus out of Joey. She often had Louis on hand to explain to her that talking stages and dating stages did not equate to a relationship and that you could be exclusive with someone but that didn’t make them your boyfriend or girlfriend. Then the word ‘situationship’ had been thrown into the mix and she’d been left baffled. Call her old-fashioned, but she’d been raised to believe that you liked someone and if they liked you back, then you sealed the deal with a kiss and then from then on you were together. Maybe it was her own severe lack of a love life that could be blamed for her ignorance, but she couldn’t help but be relieved that her own single status had saved her from the mental gymnastics of figuring out what she meant to be a person she liked.

Evidently, Killian and Amira seemed to be having this problem as well.

“He talked like he was your boyfriend, so you guys should probably put a label on that. He kept talking about how pretty you were, so he definitely likes you,” Joey reasoned.

With the reassurance that Amira did know Killian and wasn’t scared of him, Joey forced herself to relax. She only paused a little bit when Amira passed her phone back to her before eventually taking it and stuffing it back into her pocket. She gave a little nod, accepting Amira’s words, although she did wrinkle her nose in confusion when the other woman stated that being with Killian was the safest place she could be.

“Really?” she asked in disbelief, before realising how rude that was.

Immediately, her face cleared.

“Sorry. Manners. Just… he’s kind of intense, you know?” she pointed out. Surely Amira must know that Killian had the potential to be kinda scary, boyfriend or not.

Panicking a little aa the emotion welling up in Amira’s eyes turning into physical tears, Joey hastened to comfort the other girl. She reached for the napkins at the little stand full of stirrers and sugar, grabbing a handful of tissues and pressing them gently into Amira’s hands.

“Hey, are you okay?” Joey asked, quietly. “I’ll believe you if you say he’s safe, but that doesn’t mean you have to go back to him if you want to like, take time for yourself or anything.”
