Some "Get to know Evie" tidbits!

Basically I'm answering questions from this questionairre list by @wisteria-lodge because they are really good questions <3

1. What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

Chocolate milk! With fruit punch in second place, and regular milk in third place! She will always pick one of these if they're available.

2. What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

Evie shaves her body hair, but she doesn't make a big deal of it. As in, she's long since grown out of the "I look ugly with body hair" mindset, and she mainly just shaves because A) she prefers the feel of hairless skin and B) it's Oddly Satisfying^TM.

Evie loves showers and adores baths. She usually prefers showers for getting clean + washing her hair, and baths for relaxation- but sometimes she might have a relaxing shower with some good scented soap or a shower steamer. However, never let her go unsupervised into a store with bath supplies because she will snatch up as many bath bombs, bubble bath, bath salts as possible if they have any appealing scents to her (lavender, mint, eucalyptus, cherry blossom, anything beach themed, jasmine, and more).

3. What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

Haven't figured that out yet.

4. Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory) 

I think she'd have some long-lasting scars on her knees from a really bad trip-and-fall while on a run. But other than that, nothing permanent.

She's too squeamish about the tattoo pen needles to get a tatoo. She kind of likes the idea of having some tattoo in theory, but there's no way she thinks she could go through that process. It seems too painful to her.

5. What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.) 

Depends on from what point in her timeline we're talking about. Evie can be quite prone to crying in various circumstances. Usually if she was treated unfairly, or if she's feeling unsure that she's not screwing something up, or if something is making her feel alienated, or if she's scared and dreading something horrible.

6. Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Only child! And she's very happy with it, she sees some shows where one sibling wrecks the other sibling's property (like the infamous Arthur episode "Arthur's Big Hit", or that one scene from Family Ties where Alex puts Mallory's music cassette into a blender) and it gives her the fucking chills.

Then again, she does sometimes see her cat Daisy as a little sister. And she can confirm that Daisy has wrecked a few of her things. Broken favorite ornament here, peed-on backpack there. She's not a super desctructive cat and Evie loves her nonetheless, but her natural cat disregard for human property can get frustrating sometimes.

Anyways, Evie has certainly enjoyed the more peaceful home life. At the same time, being an only child probably has contributed to her inexperience in how to deal with disagreements with others in social situations.

7. Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Evie's go-to shoes tend to be comfortable running shoes. She's gone through quite a few different pairs. Sometimes she likes more casual sneakers, other times she'll go with more athletic ones (she is an athlete after all). Usually she prefers being able to just slip into them and hates fussing with laces, but her options are rather limited in that area. Especially for athletic shoes.

If she's feeling in a particularly nice-dressy mood and is wearing a really nice or cool-looking ensemble, she'll often like to pair it with black, under-one-centimeter heel, just-below-knee-high boots.

8. Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

As per the canon game, she has a bunk bed. Which I do like for her, she loves fun things like that. She was definitely a little scared about it at first but it quickly grew on her.

It's not exactly the best for when she needs to plug in her devices though... so when she's older she'll probably retreat to a lower-height but still fun bed.

Her bedsheets tend to be fun and colorful. Can be just solid color in any of her favorite colors, or some really cute pattern (flowers, stars, etc).

She loves those soft fluffy plush blankets. They feel nice and they're cozy. Daisy also likes kneading them.

She loves stuffed animals too. Even when she's an adult, she continues to buy herself cute or weirdly endearing plushies. She especially likes snuggling them when she's extra upset. But it can also be a bit of a bother to fuss with them, sometimes she needs more space on her bed + it's annoying when they fall down the side of the bed.

9. What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.) 

Evie doesn't have a favorite holiday, I think. New Year's Eve/Day, Valentine's Day, her birthday, Eid ul Fitr, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are all special experiences for her. She also celebrates things like her graduation anniversary, or any dates that have some weird special milestone for her attached to them.

As she gets older, she realizes it's because she likes having set-in-stone things to look forward to, it keeps her going even in the worst of times. The unpredictability of life and almost everything that happens in it is annoying and often jarring. So it's nice to have certain events that are regular and always occur on a set date– usually, the same day every year.

Official holidays and her birthday are great for that, but making holidays out of particular milestone dates gives her like more of it (as well has helping her remember important moments in her life and reflect on how far she's come since then).

10. What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.) 

Phone w/ ID and debit/credit cards in wallet holder, asthma inhaler. Sometimes she does try to keep other items on standby like lip balm, gum, scented lotion... but most of the time she can't be assed to add extra items to her pile.

Y'know I do wonder what it says about me how I went from venting frustrations by having X being X to putting L.L. on a blender. I mean undeniably part of it is tied to my ever growing anxiety, hell, you'd argue there's parallels to be drawn between current L.L. treatment and Juan's when I was in highschool (there's so much that I daydreamed about yet never became canon but that guy christ my poor guy 😭) and y'all know how I was in highschool aka miserable and also very scared of real things (had to walk on eggshells always) but also non real things (I was tripping balls and a man with corpse paint is hiding behind my bathroom curtain ready to kill me‼️ among other things) but that still doesn't quite explain what prompted X to be made. What was I going thru that was so exclusive to that moment it didn't happen before or after? Bc X while eventually getting the blender treatment too (that's just my ocd tbf that I understand easily I'm a guilty guilty man and I need to fuel my own guiltiness by doing more bad tm things) he's usually the one pushing others in it. Hell the sheer fact he exists and the reason why he's called X is bc I didn't want to use L.L. for the story I originally wrote of him - just had to save this as a draft could you imagine I forget I hit post limit and lose this entire thing? - and named him X as a sort of place holder. He also is EXCLUSIVE referred as X there too to give him pronouns was too personal (I still use x/xs for him occasionally but way less). And it's not like L.L. doesn't have a few crimes under their belt they've pushed people in blenders too they've had mayor arcs about this in fact even all the way back to Japan their very first place this was present and that was a symptom of Thing in fact when L.L. spoke there they were referencing them who was violent and proud but L.L. was Ashamed of this violence and yes this is present with X too but where on earth did this overwhelming urge to enact it came from? Because I Am a violent man that I won't deny lately especially the urges to break bones and throw shit are overwhelming but not as much as when I walked down the streets daydreaming of every possible way I'd have to kill someone with the coldness of someone who is expecting this to happen (while not past the age of 16 and younger). Though I suppose Sheina WAS a vehicle for this too just like X let's not forget she did torture 4 ppl for a long while and that scene was written twice no less.

I guess there was always a side of... A taste for creative violence in me as far as I have memory and Sheina and X are symptoms of this even L.L. too but I guess I just have burnout? LMAO yeah maybe it's as simple as that. I did know a lot of me spiraling is a need to convince myself it's bad enough to allow myself to feel this. Maybe this whole thing is as simple as . Got distracted thinking of other things remember there was a Point to X character development that I was supposed to change? Which is a thing in universe too bc i never changed and neither did him he just turned it down? And it's now nothing but just another thing that happens that people don't question because X learnt to behave? Worth saying too X was a bit of a show off like when he had to stop originally was his own fault for literally telling L.L. and Can about it which directly affected them both. It really is all about doing bad things only to experience consequences except X wasn't guilty ORIGINALLY. Which is funnier than it's interesting. Although in his base story you can see him slowly get softer and softer.

I'm losing track but I feel they're both a form of downward spiral. But with X there was a whole Climax. There's never that with L.L. . X was an attempt to take control in a time where I had none while L.L. is just a cry for help and portrait of the absurdity of it all. It's also an escape from control itself too, you'd say. Perhaps represents my reality in that sense. It's that paralyzing uncertainty of isolation in dependency. It also it's a legit reflection of me Forgetting I can take control of situations after all until now only Once in modern time has L.L. done so. (They killed a guy. They mangled the shit out of him. They came to work shaking covered in blood. But irl realizing yes that is an option there is a way out was such a great relief.) But there's also the Consequences and the rammys which tie back to what I said before about the paralyzing nature.

And thing which is funnier than everything else is: fuckin what will happen to L.L., huh? Like not only bc I'm writing the story but even in universe. They've killed like 4 people (2 relatives 2 strangers, maybe even more I forgot about too) they don't even exist legally they love going to prison. Nothing is more dangerous to them than their own lack of self confidence.

I seriously don't know where this overwhelming upsetness and... Lack of confidence yeah animal fear and all came from. They were always here but when did they overpower else? Where did this weakness and I mean that in the most literal sense of it too weak like an overworked muscle.

Got distracted again but I guess it's similar to X too like this seeking of a climax of this big turning point except not at all there was that L.L. literally tried to kill themselves and it was a remarkable deal but then it became standard bc Yeah.

Maybe it's like AJJ said and I deserve displeasure and I really want to cry and I think you should spit on my face because I am a werewolf.

I think that's the best I can do for a conclusion idk what I'm saying anymore spent a whole hour or so typing this.

Though it's worth saying I did start thinking of this bc the X gene if you will the Xeske nature never left me it's just buried deeper.

I feel the issue is I keep trying to reach for a happy ending I keep walking down nails waiting for something good to be on the other side but I have no idea what it looks like.

Siiigh alright I'm done typing now it's 1 am ok. Sad conclusion. Though it's not like X had any sort of happy ending already stablished my man is still doing the same. But he did meet other things. He did manage to find some peace after trying and trying again. I guess L.L. is just experiencing the hopelessness I am. I mean the face ripping off thing that was just a real mental breakdown. Arc words too nothing ever changes when they peaked from under their arms and showed what was a single eye and goopy messy blood.

So I guess it's as simple as L.L. gets blended because I don't have the strength for malice I just want thing to get better but can't find a way out. X was for digging a tunnel L.L. is for failing the climbing class.

Ginny & Georgia recap - season 1

Spoilers for season 1 of Ginny & Georgia!!

This show is so fascinating to me. It's playing off several different tropes and themes of TMS (teenager murder shows), parent/teen dramas (does this need an acronym lol?), YA as a genre (whoops that's an acronym), etc. Everything is put into a blender and then WHIZZ out comes Ginny & Georgia!

I have a thought... you know how one of the rules of the romance genre is the happy ending? I wonder if one of the rules of TV more broadly is a neat ending. Where there are maybe 1-2 loose ends but for the most part everything gets buttoned up. Of course, neat endings are prevalent in a lot of other mediums, too. And with G&G, the neatness of the ending is only really related to Georgia not going to jail for financial fraud and murder. Who knows what is going to happen to the kids!

Anyways.

I was hoping for more murder, and we got one more body, so that's fun. I was kinda hoping that Carolyn would get more maligned. Losing the mayor's election... eh. That wasn't enough for me! But I appreciated the extra depth with the scene at home where we saw her husband.

I've been thinking more about the appeal of TMS and I think part of the no responsibility bit involves financial freedom, which means either 1) the characters start off rich, 2) the characters do crime to get rich, or 3) the characters are around people with some semblance of stability and they can do crime/do drugs/be fuck-ups and still eat and all that. In G&G, it's mostly 2 - do crime to get rich. And WOAH there is so much crime. I was honestly shocked by Georgia stealing from the city. That's so risky -- and frankly implausible, unless your city is truly incompetent and not reviewing the financial books regularly?? I enjoy the way the show mixes different types of crime. It makes you constantly question your sympathies for Georgia!

There's more to say... I'll just fire things off now:

Austin is probably a psychopath... hate to say it as he's just a little kid, but good god there are red flags everywhere with that one

The voiceovers give strong Veronica Mars vibes, which I appreciate

Ginny is a bitch but I feel bad for her, her friends are forgiving but even she pushed them too far. Running off with your brother is questionable.

Side note, I am reading a novel right now where the lead says you shouldn't use gendered insults b/c they're lazy... I dunno.

The proposal scene between the Mayor and Georgia was fantastic, really took me by surprise! Also, I loved when Zion was looking into this camera during the rally/community fair scene and realized what he was looking at. Maybe too on the nose, but if you're going to be that sincere about something, might as well follow through!

Poor Hunter. He was absolutely a great boyfriend.

Marcus is borderline creepy, like the love interest whose name I forget in... that movie with Winonna Ryder where the school blows up? It was turned into a musical? I'm not going to google. Also, I appreciate the efforts to make Marcus look like a 15 year old where the actor is in their mid-twenties. They did a good job, though I'd still peg him for late teens.

What's the name for a woman who consistently murders her husbands for money? I swear there's a distinct name for it but I cannot remember if for the life of me.

MANG is fun. Abby breaks my heart! Maxine is a delightful mess. Norah avoiding her friends b/c her mom betrayed her to hurt Ginny's family/the mayor was interesting.

This show is such a soap opera!

So, there are 2 rendering modes I use in blender, cycles, and EEVEE. Cycles is what I use for the final render, it's highly realistic, does actual light simulations, overall much higher quality, but can take minutes to render. EEVEE on the other hand is more like what you'd see in a late 2000's video game. Very quick, instant, real time rendering, but prone to errors and glitches and is just generally cheaper. So for the final render I used cycles, but for quickly referencing how the lighting looked, I used EEVEE. Thing about EEVEE is that it doesn't show light being emitted from objects as it interacts with other objects, such as from the mushrooms onto the walls, and to get it to do that I had to do things tm that basically had the light be a separate thing from the objects emitting it. And while the final result looked great and fine and all good as it was processing it looked like this:

as much as i write fantasy, i LOVE a speculative tech-based setting way more than i love a historical or pseudo-historical setting - which is uh. why my main fantasy world does in fact have a cyberpunk corner and Heavily Implied To Be Aliens pantheon.

the closing chapter is ALWAYS one that ive been champing at the bit to write for the whole book, and its always so satisfying to finally get out on the page

- light+fluffy or dark+gritty

case in point: whispers and the copious amounts of various horror, gore, and downright gut-punch scenes in millennium saga

bonus points for the found family if theres an animal companion of course, but as much as i love wrench, she is a) not the most important member of the party and b) also a robot so i dont think she counts as an animal anyway outside of andy's dubious claims to fitting under the "dragon" definition

i will write 1000 instances of "what the FUCK" for every page i struggle through writing romance as someone who does not experience attraction

- hard or soft magic system

surprise! TMS may be a series and my long-running main WIP, but uh. 90% of my concepts are standalones. and tbh i like writing standalones more because i dont have to struggle with multiple books of plot and characters fitting together

while i have a bajillion ideas, i struggle to get any work done if im not 100% invested in the story at hand, so i work on one at a time (while allowing myself to switch if i need to of course; but if i do switch, it's never just a few days. its months, and often seeing something to completion)

honestly? id rather be recognized for my hard work in creating the characters/story via an award than via a bajillion people reading it,,, though theoretically if its winning an award at least enough people have read it to a) nominate it and b) vote for it, so? best of both worlds kinda?

- character or setting description

please god. my beta readers didnt know what color embers hair was until chapter 13 because i couldnt fuckin figure out how to put a description of it in naturally. ill take describing massive trees and open ocean and vast plains of ice and cluttered rooms and stained glass windows any day but dont make me describe the narrator or i swear to fuck

- first or final draft

its the puzzle box gremlin in me like "NYEHEHEHE THE PIECES. THEY ARE THERE. PEOPLE CAN SOLVE THEM. NEYHE" and that simply cannot happen in the first draft

- love triangle in everything or no romantic arcs

we write polyamory, one (1) enemies-to-lovers, or no romance at all in this house (it feels so alienating to write no matter what but if its for the story ill do just about anything)

- constant sandstorm or rainstorm

can i say blizzard? i want to say blizzard. same "dont go outside or you'll die" as sandstorm but less worrying about water and also more excuses for the characters to light a fire and Talk About The Horrors or just commit arson

AGENT 8: DAMIEN

When Damien escaped from the Blender Subways (tm), my Agent 4, Link, found him and took him in under his wing. Link's family basically adopted him, but Damien grew to despise Link, because Link's special interests mostly revolved around military history, and despite it setting off flashbacks for Damien, Link couldn't stop talking about it around him. (Also, Link is the kind of guy who genuinely thinks anything that's interesting is above criticism, deep down... and that really bothered Damien as a former Octarian soldier.) As soon as he graduated high school, Damien went zero-contact with Link and went to a university on the far end of Inkadia. He successfully graduated with a degree in biology and is currently pursuing a master's somewhere.

Damien's quiet, but when he does talk, he's got a dry wit that some people really vibe with, and some really hate. But he can also be uplifting. He's genuinely honest, for better or for worse. He's come to terms with the fact that he'll never fully remember his life in the Domes, because nothing good happens to him when he does remember it, and no amount of therapy is gonna convince him it's worth it to try to get over it "properly".

I'm putting the TRON characters under a cut for brevity:

Yori isn't someone who really speaks to me TBH. She deserves more of a role, but she's trapped in being a side female character in an 80s movie, TBH. Lora's got a lot more of a role in the plot than she does. She's incredibly perceptive and smart, but one of the scenes that really characterized her well got deleted because... it was also the sex scene. Like, hardly a sex scene by non-TRON standards, but we all know the intent was there. Come on.

I really wish we'd seen more of her in later TRON stories. There's people out there who write her into Legacy and Uprising better than I ever could, so I won't try to shoehorn her into there. I really wish she'd made an appearance in TRON 2.0, but I understand why she isn't there? Not only does it not make sense for her to be there, since the digitization system has been entirely reworked (although she could have been on the antiquated system)... I also don't think a scene between her, Jet, and/or Alan fits the tone of the game at all. Great fanfic idea, but that side of the game would have to be beefed up a lot for it to make sense.

Where I think she could have fit better is Ghost In The Machine. I know I bring up GITM at every opportunity, but GITM faces that side of the Baines-Bradley family story head-on. It also doesn't completely fit the plot here - all the characters are people Jet (et. al.) are imagining from their memories of being in both the real world and the computer, and the version of Yori that would be there couldn't be the real thing. But maybe after they combine and wake up, Yori could... be... there... somehow? Okay, it doesn't fit here either, but just from the title, it should have happened.

I'm gonna start by explaining a couple of things on here. I don't think Rinzler needs any more or less angst. Like Yori, he's hardly a character in his own right, because they just don't... go into what makes him him enough for me to have an opinion on the matter. But I can respect a well-crafted antagonist and I'll say this: I think the amount of like, trauma/romance/whatever he has is appropriate for his role in Legacy.

Rinzler isn't a character I'm particularly opinionated about, but I will say this. I have a lot of thoughts about him that I've only ever expressed in private, and will continue not to post on Tumblr, because to be frank... They concern things that aren't Tumblr's business. If you've found my fics on ao3, you might be able to figure out what I mean, but I'm not discussing it here and will continue to not discuss it here.

I'll say this. I don't care how people write him, but I take issue with people making bold assumptions about peoples' mental health over like, how they write a fictional character. I've seen some of that in the Tronblr tags lately. People don't need to list their diagnoses to justify their opinions on like, some guy from TRON Legacy to anyone.
