When you say Yes to everything, what are you saying NO to?

Do you ever feel overcommitted and overwhelmed with all the activities you have?  You find that when asked, you feel guilty if you say NO so you say YES.  Yes, I will head this committee, Yes I will take on this new role, Yes I will lead this class.  Yes, Yes Yes. But what if I told you every time you say Yes you are also saying NO.  

Before I explain I ask you to think of a person, and it may be you are thinking of.  That person can’t bring themselves to say NO. They are always on the go.  Why do we feel we can’t say no?  We like to be needed. We feel that we are valued and are the go-to person.  We feel valued. So we say Yes to everyone and then we find ourselves spread so thin.  

As I said, you are saying NO every time you say YES.  I’ll take it a step further, it is impossible to say Yes without saying NO. 

Every time you say Yes to a commitment you are saying NO to time with your spouse or partner.  When you say YES you will take on a special project at work, you are saying NO to time with your kids.  Whatever it is, you are saying NO to something.  The trick is to discover what your yes and no’s are and create a balance.  

I challenge you to make a list of all your commitments then write next to it what the thing is you are saying NO to.  Then decide if the benefits are work it.  It may very well be, it may be good to take on that special project to get a promotion and have more financial security.  However, if that is always the case, project after project, it may not be worth the coast of what you are saying NO to just to get another promotion.  Only you can answer that.
