I want to talk about the financial burden of dog ownership today. It’s a delicate subject that feels taboo to talk about, so I want to preface by saying that everyone’s financial situation is unique and fluid, so let’s try not to judge anyone for their difficulties. I mostly hope this post is helpful for people who are thinking about getting a dog or are in the planning/budgeting process. People often fixate only on the initial cost of getting a dog/puppy. Don’t. All of that pales in comparison to the annual costs of owning a dog. Cost of living varies greatly by region, but here is our 2018 expenses through May for our two dogs combined: $700 - Routine veterinary costs (vaccinations, wellness exams, visits on small medical issues) $520 - Obedience classes and puppy socials $360 - Food, chews and treats $170 - Monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives = $1,820 - TOTAL FOR JAN-MAY Our vaccinations are only administered in spring, but everything else can be projected out for the full year. This also does NOT include supplies like toys/shampoos/etc. A dog walker, doggy daycare or pet insurance will need to be factored into your budget as well. That’s a lot right? Well I haven’t touched on the dreaded “big ticket” item: medical emergencies. In January, Drewbert needed to get a tooth extraction because he fractured one of his upper premolars. Between the initial vet visit, a pre-op blood test, the actual procedure with a veterinary dental specialist, and the post-op medication, this one medical event cost $2,500. If you add that to our routine expenses, our new total for YTD 2018 now is up to $4,300. An emergency fund (personal savings) or pet insurance will help you weather the big stuff. Dogs are unconditional love packaged in a soft furry body, but they are still a living, breathing creature.
