like the togos and gender re: the facility is really cray-cray interesting to me and i havent fully decided on certain things but the general shape of the opinion i have formed. and the bottom line of it is like. genders are for People. and with the ~exception of isaac these children were not allowed to view themselves as real people

like it's super interesting bc like. gender is kinda present. like it can be assumed that, like in a lot of spaces, a certain degree of masculinity was considered neutral, as indicated by cullen using boku, and then there's how shuichi and duo were raised as brothers

but they were by default assigned neuter bc they were by default considered subhuman, with the soft masculine gendering almost certainly being incidental

yes so basically the cloned children were broadly assigned neuter ('plans a-d' 'human library', first and foremost 'subject/specimen') as they were considered objects rather than people, though there was a degree of masculinity they were allowed/that was projected onto them just incidentally. there are some instances where they decidedly are gendered, shuichi and duo being Brothers, and more immediately malignantly, the 3 geniuses attire, most especially cullen's. it's really interesting, esp re: cullen and to a lesser degree shuichi, like simultaneously being de-gendered and malignantly gendered, both to the end of dehumanization/objectification.

shuichi and cullen drive me the most insane re: gender by orders of magnitude but there's something that just fucking kills me about the fact that with the "privileges" isaac was afforded, he legitimately could have been the only cis clone.... but he's too much of a little weirdo

i am perpetually obsessed with aus where the togos legit are not human. specifically when they were human but aren't anymore like its something about the way in canon shuichi has to defend their humanity & by extension their personhood when its denied to them on the basis of the circumstances of their birth like its one thing for someone who is not and was never human to have to defend their personhood, but shuichi having to defend their humanity-and-by-extension-personhood (even though and ESPECIALLY BECAUSE he personally doesn't equate the two) through the specific manner of their conception-- without even addressing what was done to them after-- really just does something to me mentally and then taking that and making it like. they were human regardless of the circumstances of their birth, and even if they may not be human anymore they're still people and the key difference between shuichi and his siblings in that regard (bc on the surface this reads a lot like bertro's whole deal) is that shuichi is deeply angry-- among other things, but the thing that sets him apart from his siblings is that anger and resentment and whatnot, just like raw emotion that isnt just weariness and resignation-- about how unfair it all is
