Calling all Love! Live! fans! I always happen to come here unexpectedly 😅 just because I remember where the shrine is. ⛩️ You'll see a lot of businessmen here, as praying at Kanda Myojin is set to bring you business success. 🎁 If you're looking for souvenirs, the EDOCCO complex on the shrine's grounds has some nice options (amulets, books, foods and so on). ,🎐If you're a Love! Live! fan, you can try and reach the shrine through the stairs - and look for the stall with anime-related merchandise to use at the shrine. 💖 There's a cute little donkey you can say hi to. #kandamyojin #kandamyojinshrine #kandamyoujin #shrinegram #shrine #japaneseshrines #japaneseshrine #tokyoshrine #tokyotravelguide #tokyotraveltips (presso Kanda Myoujin Shrine) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgO6TC9PBNe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
(January, 13th 2019) Everything in Tokyo moves fast, the trains, the people, time doesn’t stand still. At times, the days resemble sand slipping from your fingers. Days, months and years pass in the blink of an eye. But at times, Tokyo presents you with glimpses from the past. And lets you breath its essence and if it were whispering a long-hidden secret. It doesn’t happen often, but it happens. And if you are lucky to have a camera, then you “capture” that moment. The moment when Tokyo unveils its soul. #writersofinstagram #writing #writingcommunity #pictureoftheday #pic #tokyo #tokio #tokyoshrine #tokyotemple #tokyohiddengems #tokyohiddenplaces #yoneko #ciudaddetokyo https://www.instagram.com/p/B_1WhFkgUQl/?igshid=1ii7rbqklto1n
A lesson in omikuji. At the shrine, to get your fortune you shake a tin with sticks inside and then turn upside down to get the stick out of the hole. The stick has a number on it and that’s the draw your fortune is in. If you get a bad fortune you tie it to these bars, the temple priest will pray for the bad luck to go away. #phuqer #tokyo #japan_vacations #asian #tokyocity #shinjuku #shrines #japanshrine #tokyoshrine #buddhist #japan_vacations (at Tokyo, Japan) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxq4XqdlTCBIuNoJYrDdWupu_ziNyF17qGdlBU0/?igshid=1s294lqxuhncj
I figured Japan seniors’ secret to long life - daily walk to Meiji Jingu Shrine’s forest entrance. Aside from tourists, there are more locals coming here and I noticed a number of them were elderly. #tokyotravel #tokyojapan #tokyoforest #meijijingu #meijishrine #meijijingushrine #japan #tokyoshrines #meijishrinetokyo (at Meiji Shrine) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGYj1bEAW4y/?igshid=ow9lr10wvjrl

Something that is also blooming despite the weather are TOURISTS! 👪👩👩👧👦👨👨👧👦 So many foreigners everywhere. Makes me wonder...was I so loud and clueless when I first came to Japan? 🤣 . Are you an expat / have you ever been in a similar situation? 🤔 . . . . . . #japan #japanlife #japanesestyle #mytokyolife #photo_jpn #ig_nihon #ig_nippon #lifeintokyo #japanstyle #tokyolife #lovejapan #japanese #gaijin #nihon #cooljapan #東京 #日本 #tokyo #tokyotravel #japanphotographer #japaneseculture #japaneselifestyle #japanfocus #外人#tokyostreet #tokyoshrine #tokyotemple #桜 (en Kichijōji)
In the midst of #Tokyo thrives a serene and spiritual forest. Walking in this thick forest made me think we were in a different part of Japan! #tokyotravel #tokyojapan #tokyoforest #meijijingu #meijishrine #meijijingushrine #japan #tokyoshrines #meijishrinetokyo (at Meiji Shrine) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGQJ1W2gEIW/?igshid=j5cygn5el2vt
One, or two, things you will notice in Japan are that there are a lot Shinto shrines in the neighborhoods and that there are also Buddhist temples mixed in as well. Walking and talking through those areas with my aunt and uncle has been super eye opening and helps me to learn a lot about the Japanese culture, norms, and ideas in general. This shrine was located in Yanaka, which is about 15 minutes from where we are staying right now.
I won’t go too in depth, but basically Shinto is foundationally animistic in its belief system. (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animism) Every shrine has a gate. This is one distinction between Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
Every shrine also has a purification basin to wash your hands and mouth before approaching the structure where the particular god is believed to be present.
The strucure to the right is where things akin to fortunes or alms are sold and read to you so that it shapes how and what you will pray for at the next structure. The front facing structure does not hold an image of a god, but instead is supposed to house the spirit of god related to the particular town you are in. Prayers are offered in general worship, offering, or are based on the fortune you received. It’s customary to offer money at the front box, clap twice, and then pray and bow.
The oranate structure above is somewhat of a portable ark of sorts. When it is in use, in this case once every 5 years, it is said to carry the presence of the local town’s deity. A big festival is held in the town and depending on the size of the ark people carry this ark through the town on their shoulders while singing and dancing.
