A lone manatee rises from its grassy feast for a quick breath. It spent its day in a nearby resting hole, moving only a few meters to dine. This week we've been watching and listening to the manatees near St. George's Caye in collaboration with ECOMAR and supported by SEETurtles and Natures Path in an effort to identify ways to protect these animals from vessel collisions and to better understand their abundance and habitat use. This is a little bit late but better late than never! These are my nine most liked photos for 2017. Funny that I almost never even posted a few of these and I also appear to have unwittingly become a wildlife photographer this year. This past year has afforded me the opportunity to meet, shoot with, and learn from many talented photographers. I’m so thankful to these individuals for sharing their talents with me. Little Moments || The other day I went outside with the intention of getting some macro shots of the beautiful flowers around the Iguana Reef Inn. However, I ended up having an issue with my flash (it wouldn’t work - likely my own user error). So I wondered out to the dock where Blanco (the pelican pictured here) was chilling out. I watched as he peacefully preened himself. He allowed me to get very close him and to snap away with my macro lens. Another pelican, White Ears, showed up and the three of us hung out together alone for some time. White Ears took a special interest in my lens putting his beak right up to the glass (unfortunately those shots were very blurry). It’s the little moments that often mean so much.
