Shark Finning Fishing is estimated to have decreased international shark populations by up to 90% since the start of the past century (Green, 2015). Many of these sharks were killed for their fins in a process called shark finning. Shark finning is a gruesome process in which fishermen drag living sharks onto their vessels and then slice off their fins before tossing the alive, finless, sharks overboard. Unable to swim, the sharks sink to the bottom of the ocean and suffocate. Shark fins are considered extremely valuable for their culinary use in shark fin soup. The soup can cost up to $100 per bowl, and with increasing demand, fishermen have an economic incentive to sustain their slaughter of sharks (Fairclough, 2019).  Not only is shark finning harmful to the sharks and their ocean ecosystems, but it is also harmful to human health, as the shark products have very high levels of the toxic metal mercury. Consuming mercury can be poisonous to humans, implicating the nervous system and causing a range of neurological and muscular issues (Falck, 2018). Our active choice not to eat shark will decrease the demand for shark product - saving the creatures from extinction and helping humans stay healthy! Ecuador recently announced that a fleet of 260 fishing vessels, predominantly from China, were spotted anchored in international waters on the border of the Galápagos Exclusive Economic Zone. Overfishing is an enormous threat to the unique wildlife of the Galápagos, yet there are no laws to safeguard marine life, such as migratory sharks, that cross the boundaries protected areas into international waters. The 2017 incident is in reference to the capture of a Chinese fishing vessel that was caught inside the Galápagos protected area with ~660,000 pounds (300 tons) of marine life, mostly sharks.
