VOTD: Hippo Campus – “Doubt”
Indie alternative band Hippo Campus took a new direction with the release of their second studio album, Bambi, in 2018. Contrary to Landmark (2017), Bambi adds more electronic production to the mix — taking their normally happy and carefree sound to a more personal and moody level. The result was an almost-new sound altogether from the band, with sprinkles of their old sound throughout. One of the standout tracks from the album is “Doubt.” Speaking about the song to Billboard, frontman Jake Luppen said, “Love is universal. Unfortunately, falling in love with things that hurt you is universal too.” This idea fully captures the sound and lyrics of “Doubt.”
The video takes an interesting but beautiful approach to the song. Directed by Tomson Tee, the video follows the story of a deer falling in love with a truck. The deer is portrayed as a person with a deer mask/head on and dressed in red coat, black jeans, and a handbag. The deer is found walking alone along a city street late at night with no one else around. Shortly after walking around, a truck aggressively starts to chase the deer, catching the deer in its headlights. While the truck is attacking the deer, the deer starts to fantasize about the truck and ultimately falls in love with it. While the metaphor is odd, it captures in the best way the idea of falling in love with something that will inevitably hurt you. At the end of the video, the deer is seen riding on the truck with a rope tied around it — almost like the harness to a horse. The deer dances happily, but, with the last chord of the song, looks almost as if they had made a mistake in falling in love with the truck.
Hippo Campus has always had a knack for making abstract music videos with songs like “Bambi,” “Western Kids,” and “Buttercup.” “Doubt,” however, definitely takes a new route that gives fans better insight into what the song is about along with the overall theme of the album. A note on Vampire Weekend, and the absurd magic of the song. by Justin Nelson

A few times a year I get a physical-urge to put on the Vampire Weekend discography multiple times a day and completely over-play their amazing, only 33 songs. It’s usually sometime around December or January. When it is getting annoyingly cold. This is a stretch, but it could be from the first line of the album Contra, “In December drinking Horchata”, but we will never know. Every year I pull the records out I am reminded that these albums were made in a five-year span by young human beings. College student human beings. Middle school english teaching human beings. Humans not much older than I. I listen. I think about this. I am dumbfounded. I feel weak. Four humans, one band, so much new-ness. Never-heard-this-before-ness. Can-you-really-do-that-ness? Why-it-this-working-ness? I listen again.
Vampire Weekend. A four-piece band out of New York City, made up of students from Columbia University. Students, graduates, and full-time employees. Vocalist Ezra Koenig, an English Literature major and Teach For America junior high teacher. Chris Tomson, a drummer and music student, worked as a music archivist. Whatever that is. Bassist Chris Baio majored in Russian and Eurasian Regional studies, and apparently planned to teach with Teach For America as well. Guitarist Rostam Batmanglij majored in music. I have no Idea what he did to make money. But he did self produce the first two Vampire albums and now is taking on the music world as a writer and producer.
The strange collective released their first work in 2008, a self titled eponymous album that changed the way we think about and listen to Indie music. Everybody and their moms, my mom included has heard the fun hooky guitars from the first 10 seconds of “A Punk”. But popularity is not what makes this release interesting. It’s how bad it sounds that makes it the anomaly it is. Truly. It doesn’t sound great. (It’s crucial to understand that thinking it sounds “not so great” is separate from thinking very highly of the piece. Both at the same time are possible). The band recorded a lot of this material in a family barn, the drums specifically, and most of it was done in basements, and band member apartments. Which in itself is not strange, I and most of the musicians I know have had to take what we can get, which is often an apartment, sometimes a basement, no barns yet but I’m intrigued. The wildness of this, is that while these geniuses were self producing an album, they were tracking indie rock history. They did not know the magnitude of the chords they were playing. They were tracking #430 on Rolling Stone’s “The 500 Greatest Albums of all Time”, a list that was published in 2003, meaning somebody had to be kicked off the 500 Greatest Albums in History Island so that Vampire Weekend could step ashore. Four gentlemen were self-recording and self-producing an almost Gold certified record, a release that was soon to be standing beside Adele, Frank Ocean, Sigur Rós and Radiohead on the mega indie label XL Recordings.
Vampire Weekend of course is not the first band to break through in this way. MGMT’s first release in 2007 Oracular Spectacular was included on the same Rolling Stone list. Same scenario almost, two friends meeting in college working on music together. MGMT had released numerous EP’s beforehand and had known-producers work with them. Vampire did not. Bon Iver’s massive first release For Emma, Forever Ago achieved similar, if not greater heights and paved a way for folk music to be intertwined with electronic production, and gave listeners a new way to listen to and understand Auto-Tune. The similarity of For Emma, to Vampire Weekend’s debut is that not only in self-production, but in the way it sounds. Bad. Off. Mistakes present. Timing incorrect. Guitars out of tune. Perfect? History made? Indie music to never be the same?
This is where it gets fascinating. Where does the heart and soul of an album come from? Local bands around the world work tirelessly to get enough money to work with so-and-so producer, get into the best studio in their town, to write a song with XYZ, to get this gear and that gear, to be noticed. Internationally known acts spend outrageous amounts of money to record albums. In 2010 Kanye West spent almost 3 million dollars to record My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, one of the most expensive albums in music history. And one of the greatest, according to every music blog and newspaper known to man. So where does it come from? There’s every argument in the world for how these things happen. The classic 2000-2010 argument, “People bought records back then”, the geographical argument of “They got started in NYC, there’s more opportunity there”, or the absolute worst one, “They just got lucky”. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, alone in a cabin, engineering a T Pain meets Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska masterpiece, got lucky? Vampire Weekend paved the way for indie artists to incorporate World music into their albums and sounds because in 2008, people were buying albums, providing the platform and capital for the band to keep sharing their unique talents? I don’t know. We want answers for the unknown. We want to know how one bands barn recording can go farther than our own barn recordings. We want our own self produced work to sit alongside wildly expensive Adele albums in a grand showcase of absurdity. So why doesn’t this happen more often? People love indie music and new bands. People love great stories. Malcom Gladwell would say these folks did their 10,000 hours in combination of being in the right place in time, with the right people around them. Work and Chance. Label executives would say they heard something they hadn’t yet heard before. More work, less Chance. Probably the truest and most likely reason in Vampire and Bon Iver’s case. Personally I stand closer to that side as well. Songs. Great, great songs.
Vampire Weekend, an album full of catchy songs. An album full of catchy songs with an influence from genres that don’t normally break the American mainstream. Songs that are so fun to hear, you listen beyond the fact that it sounds like a lesser quality than other albums and songs you heard that day. You don’t make one of the greatest albums in history by only using great tricks from great hats. You make one of the greatest albums in history by writing and performing the greatest songs in history. This may seem obvious, and a great waste of 10 minutes reading about this. But we musicians need this reminder constantly. It’s 2017, a time when there are more hats and more tricks than ever before. More music blogs than ever. More bands than ever. Less album sales than ever. Music; bigger than it has ever been. More people have more music in their pocket than history has ever seen. So it only makes complete sense to build artist careers off of getting your music into people’s pockets and Spotify playlists. Tricks. Hats. Money. Meetings. Image consultation. Instagram ads. Publicists. Live streams. All amazing tools. Bon Iver printed 500 copies of For Emma, Forever Ago, sent 100 of them to indie labels, and played one show in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Was it 2008? Yes. Were more people buying records? Yes. Did millions of people have nearly every song ever released in their pockets? No. It’s the songs that keep us going, writing, questioning, feeling, crying, performing, pulling out our guitars that our Grandfathers gave us and getting something out of us. I don’t know enough about music trends of the 21st century, but the little I do know is not the thing that makes me want to sit behind a piano and wrestle with creativity. Songs do. Even if they sound bad and have mistakes.
When I pull out the Vampire Weekend album from 2008, when four young men who were lucky, and were 22 in a time when people bought records, and happened to live in New York, I always smile. Because the songs bring me back to my turntable. None of it makes any sense, and all at the same time, it seems to make perfect sense.
(And for the record, I find their second release Contra to be far more interesting. To self produce a major label debut is one thing, but to self produce the second, the answer album, when the opinions of your fans can break you, is another thing entirely. And listen to it. It’s fascinating how much they stretched themselves creatively.)
