#TONICINDY this year our band, Black Plastic Glasses, with the help of @dysfunktionbrass, will do two #eltonjohn songs, neither of which are on this. Got home from band practice and wanted to listen to more #elton but was tired of the songs we just ran through a half dozen or so times each. Gotta say, when he and #bernietaupin connect they’re amazingly great (“Rocket Man”) or at least pretty dang great (“Honky Cat,” “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters”); when they miss, they miss huge, oy. SOCIAL DISTANCING DAY 231. This Friday is the virtual @tonicindy and they asked folks to reminisce. So. Black Plastic Glasses. What we lack in precision we make up with spectacle. I LOVE PLAYING TONIC BALL. The BPG core: @59tweed and Scott Westervelt and Matt “Leroy” McElhiney (bass, guitars, drums in that first photo montage). In 2013 we did Tom Petty at @radio_radio_indy and that’s officially the best time I ever had onstage: I’ve played for warmed-up little crowds and big indifferent crowds—but here was a full, enthusiastic room and onstage I stood with @shushmuckle and his wife Grace (vocals, acoustic, shaker); @lindsayhadley_ (cello); and pro violinist @odometerdave from Chicago (violin, of course)! What a night. Next, 2014, Springsteen: @mrosekeohane joined for Glory Days and Blinded by the Light (Mannfred Mann vers). Two trombones did the glissando synth and organ parts (@50littlebirds and @mikesavitski). Leroy sang the “gonna make it through the night” bit, Scott rocked the guitar solos and he and Brett and Leroy powered the full rock treatment as Scott and Mina sang the rocking parts while I sang the motormouth “gokart Mozart” parts. Awesome. 2015, we took on the Stones, adding the thunder of @magee.david on bass and Brett on “another guitar.” Kicked off with two-accordion attack on Street Fightin’ Man (Mina & me). Then oh my God I hope you were there for Gimme Shelter. Scott sounded like Mick. Guitars&rhythm section sounded like the record. And Mina, omg, Mina sang that Merry Clayton Armageddon backing vocal perfectly. 2016, Wilco, @dysfunktionbrass and @binkytolstoy joined. Amazing! (You can listen to clips on our Facebook page.) Visiting the fantasy life of making up songs and having them recorded by pros in a beautiful studio. Such a nice place to visit, Ball State’s amazing recording facility, finishing up that @beneficencerecords recording project we were privileged to take part in (benefiting @secondhelpingsindy via @tonicindy connections which resulted in a cool vinyl compilation album I’ll spin here one of these days, featuring little old us, Black Plastic Glasses, on the opening track of all places, mostly I think because of the fun of playing with @dysfunktionbrass on that @wilco cover last Spring). Yesterday was part of the wonderful deal, getting to record an original, and I’m so grateful to the guest appearances by @lindsayhadley_ on cello and @mrosekeohane on vocals / pitch-in co-production. One of the best #tonicball @tonicindy nights in memory. Performances from the ridiculous to, as they say, the sublime. (Our band’s happily chaotic set was around 1:00 a.m., and probably somewhere closer to the ridiculous or at least wilder end of that scale.) 1. @mtwiltrout68 brought out his Bach costume for a Sir Elton dress-up duel with multi-Eltonist @mattmays (seen in #2.) as they both delivered “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” 3. Brian Deer can sing fast and lower than I realized, doing “Ring of Fire” with Josh Silbert and here picking on “Get Rhythm.” 4. Josh Silbert again, guesting with Phyllis on “Waterloo,” first ABBA song of the evening, kicking off Scott Westervelt & Brett Cantrell’s night which they ended hourrrrrrs later playing “Crocodile Rock” and “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Wrecking Pianos)” with Leroy, some of the @dysfunktionbrass crew and me in Black Plastic Glasses.5. Evan Finch gives Kyle Barnett information about the Yardbirds before launching ABBA’s “Does Your Mother Know?” (I’m mashing things that happened together for the sake of brevity.) 6. Brian Deer and Ken Honeywell, standing stage left of Matt Mays and, somewhere, I think, Matt Wilson in Bomb Dylan, all of them like famous-name anchor stores at the mall during Tonic Ball. 7. & 8. I didn’t think anyone could top this performance of “Philadelphia Freedom,” starring everyone I ever met. Then 9. Matt Mays brought down the house with “Border Song” and “Take Me to the Pilot” starring the Eastern Star Church Choir, DysFUNKtion Brass again, and wow. Seemed like all other acts would have to be cancelled. No one could follow that. Then Mina Keohane did! She had the entire room singing “Rocket Man” and almost the whole room singing “Mona Lisas and Madhatters” and it was transcendent, transportive. Again. Nobody can follow that. Then 10. Sarah Grain (with Mina) (and the rest of her band) did—everyone sang along to “Tiny Dancer” like in Almost Famous. There were other great acts but gee. Tonic Ball is the best night of the year, and helps @secondhelpingsindy feed people around #thanksgiving besides. Recorded two @wilco songs for @beneficencerecords, at @ballstateuniversity. They chose a few @tonicindy bands for a project and we were lucky to participate. DysFUNKtion brass recreated the magic from last November. Scott brought the pedal steel guitar. More details about the project to follow.
