A Godsmack egy csaknem három évtizede létező formáció, akik a valamikor az ezredforduló környékén – részben a grunge farvizén – úsztak be a köztudatba. Muzsikájuk egyszerre tisztelgés az Alice in Chains életműve előtt, és egy teljesen egyedi ötvözete a groove, a nu és az alternatív metalnak. Ezzel együtt a Metal Archives számára ők nem elég kemény brigád, a róluk szóló infókat más oldalakon kell keresnünk.  

Sully Erna énekes-ritmusgitáros, Tony Rombola szólógitáros és Robbie Merrill basszusgitáros gyakorlatilag a kezdetek óta együtt muzsikáló hármasához 2002-ben csatlakozott Shannon Larkin dobos (ex-Wrathild America, ex-Ugly Kid Joe stb.), és azóta ez a felállás szállítja a Godsmack címke alatt megjelenő albumokat. A Lighting Up the Sky Ernáék nyolcadik és állításuk szerint utolsó nagylemeze, ám utóbbi jelzőt nem feltétlenül kell elhinnünk nekik, hiszen láttunk már sokadik feltámadást, és az új anyag ismeretében bánnám is, ha most hallanék róluk utoljára.   

Én valamikor 2006 táján találkoztam velük először, s miután az addig megjelent négy albumot magamévá tettem, magamban másodvonalbeli grunge, post-grunge, „majdnem grunge” csapatnak könyveltem el őket. Az új anyag azonban remekül példázza, hogy hogyan lehet ebből az alapanyagból valami általános érvényű, időtálló zenét alkotni. Lighting Up the Sky ugyanis, ha nem is teljesen egyedi, de nagyon mai muzsikával ápolja a lelket. Ernára érezhetően nemcsak Layne Staley, hanem Michael Poulsen is nagy hatással lehetett, ugyanis a dalok időnként már-már zavaró Volbeat-párhuzamot mutatnak.  

Erna az életmű legfontosabb albumának nevezte; én eleinte kellemes hallgatnivalónak mondtam, ám ma már egy igen erős anyagnak tartom a LUtS-t, amelynek dalaiban 50+-os zenészek igyekeznek számot vetni eddigi pályafutásukkal, összegezni annak legfényesebb pillanatait. Ám ez az összegzés elég felemásra sikerült. 

Már a nyitó You and I-ban is feltűnik, hogy Ernának mennyire hasonlít a hangja Poulsenéhez: úgy süvít, ugyanazon a regiszteren búg. A zene azonban (itt még) nem pörög úgy, elszállósabb. S ha a Red White & Blue-ban néhány pillanatra vissza is bújik régi példaképe árnyékába, itt a rock and rollos tempó, a dallamok íve is a népszerű dán csapatot idézi. Ezzel együtt, a dalért máris bezsebelhetik tőlem az első pufók piros pontot. A Surrendernél ugyanezt a receptet követik: csipetnyi AIC, maroknyi Volbeat. A What About Me-ért azonban ennek a duplája jár: lendületes, erőteljes, dallamos nóta, kétségtelenül a lemez egyik slágere.

A lírai hangokra fogékonyak ugyanezt fogják mondani a Truth-ra és a Growing Old-ra is; Erna érzésem szerint ezekben a dalokban „talált rá” leginkább a saját hangjára. A Hell’s Not Dead-ben ugyanis megint egy az egyben Poulsen-es: hogy lehet az, merül fel bennem a kérdés, hogy egy ilyen régi harcos, mint Sully, nem érzi a hasonlóságot, az összetéveszthetőséget, amitől pedig óvakodnia kellene?

A zenében szerencsére az a fajta varázslat is megmaradt, ami az ezredforduló környékén jellemezte őket. Erre a legjobb példa a You and I közepe és a Let’s Go szólórésze, slusszpoénnak pedig a lemezt záró címadó végén, néhány taktus erejéig a csapat egyik emblematikus dala, a Voodoo dallamai is felcsendülnek. 

A Lighting Up the Sky egy remek Volbeat-, akarom mondani, Godsmack-album, nyoma sincs benne a grunge görnyedésének; egy feszes, jórészt pörgős, mai, a szélesebb közönségrétegeket megcélzó anyag. A végső osztályzatból pusztán a copycat miatt vonok le fél pontot. Nálam eddig az év lemeze.

You can recognize a nu metal musician by a few sonic hallmarks, though I would say one of the most prominent characteristics of the genre might be their way with the vocals. There are primarily two distinct paths, i.e. some mix their singing with rapping, whereas others include both the growling and the melodic warbling. Godsmack belong to the latter category, their nu metal reminds us of Slipknot, since Sully Erna seems to be a fan of the metal style, but he also favours the hard rock brand. Thus, the group does a melange of the these two idioms without completely settling on either of them. Then there is also the musical backing, which places the entire enterprise within the framework of the infamous late 90's pattern of rock music.

Today in Godsmack History: Good Times, Bad Times

Godsmack covered the Led Zeppelin song in 2007, for their album, Good Times, Bad Times… Ten Years of Godsmack, released on December 4, 2007. It was the only song on the album to be newly released as a single and gained moderate radio airplay on US rock stations peaking at #8 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks and #28 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks. A music video was also created for the Godsmack version of the song, featuring live footage.

A Sully Erna vezette Godsmack 1995-ben alakult Massachusets államban. Hihetetlen, hogy a közel 30 éves múltra visszatekintő, hazájukban stadionokat megtöltő zenekar ezidáig csak egyszer, 2019-ben járt nálunk. Az a koncert eredetileg 2018 őszén lett volna megtartva, hamar teltházas is lett a buli, ám Tony Rombola gitáros fiának halála miatt az akkori turné őszi szakaszát törölték és áttolták 2019 tavaszára.

Godsmack History: Fan Safety at Uproar Fest Pittsburgh ‘12

This video was taken on August 31, 2012 and shows a rambunctious fan storm the stage during “Awake” and place a hat on Sully Erna’s head! Although somewhat annoyed Erna, like a true professional kept playing while the fan was dispatched by security.

Sully kept an eye on guards and fan and although it’s not visible in the video, Sully decided that whatever violence may be unfolding was excessive and intervened.

This is shows the devotion Sully and Godsmack themselves have to their fans and their safety. It is unknown by this blog whether the security is Godsmack personal detail or issued elsewhere. Sully is an amazing guy.

It is important to note that these guards are trying to do their job in maintaining the safety of not only the talent but the fan base as well. It is also important to know that they are not the enemy at rock shows. Far too many horror stories like the assassination of Dimebag Darrell, the incident in Prague involving Randy Blythe or the recent events of the Las Vegas shooting flood these men’s/women’s minds while on duty.

Remember to be respectful to both the talent and security detail at concerts so situations like these do not unfold in this manner. Sully may not always be there to save you!

GODSMACK RELEASE NEW VIDEO FOR CHART-TOPPING “WHEN LEGENDS RISE” WHICH HAS SPENT FOUR WEEKS AT #1 ON THE ROCK CHART AND IS THE TITLE RACK FROM BAND’S CURRENT ALBUM GROUP NOMINATED FOR TWO iHeart RADIO AWARDS: ROCK SONG OF THE YEAR FOR “BULLETPROOF” AND “ROCK ARTIST OF THE YEAR”

GODSMACK kick off the new year with a new video, two iHeart Radio Award nominations and tour dates which will keep the multi-platinum hard rock titans on the road through mid-May.  

On the video front, the band have created a high-energy clip for the album’s title track, “When Legends Rise” which has been the #1 song at Rock Radio for four straight weeks. The video, which is being released in advance of this weekend’s NFL Playoffs, mixes an electrifying live performance of the Boston quartet–Sully Erna [vocals, guitar], Tony Rombola [guitar], Robbie Merrill [bass], and Shannon Larkin [drums]–interspersed with thrilling highlights of pivotal moments in recent football history, concluding with a shot of the New England Patriots Super Bowl trophy.

“When Legends Rise” is the second #1 from the album. It follows last year’s #1 “Bulletproof,” which was just nominated for “Rock Song of the Year” for the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards and was also the most-played song at rock radio in 2018. The band was also nominated for a second award for “Rock Artist of the Year.”

WHEN LEGENDS RISE marks the band’s seventh studio album and their first in four years. The critically acclaimed 11-song collection entered the Billboard Top 200 album chart in the top ten (#8), with four #1 placements on other charts: Top Rock Albums, Top Hard Music Albums, Top Independent Albums and Top Alternative Albums.
