HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Fairuza Balk, David Bowie’s 1983 “Let’s Dance” single, Raymond Burr, Martin Carthy, Bill Champlin, Vincent Crane, John Dalton (The Kinks), Albrecht Dürer, ELO’s 1977 “Telephone Line” UK single, Noel Fielding, Sonny Forriest (Ray Charles, The Coasters), Marvin Gaye’s 1971 WHAT’S GOING ON album, Gotye, Richard Hatch, Ronald Isley, Sam Jaffe, The Kingsmen’s 1966 “Louie Louie” single, Stan Lynch, Mrs. Miller’s 1966 “Downtown” single, Robert Montgomery, Rebecca Moore, Richard Morrison, Alexander Pope, Judge Reinhold, Marc Ribot, Todd Rundgren’s 1983 “Bang on the Drum” single, Fayçal Salhi, Leo Sayer, Mr. T, Hilton Valentine, Fats Waller, Shot Williams, Stevie Wonder’s 1977 “Sir Duke” single, and the lively entertainer/singer-songwriter Tony Sheridan. He’s mostly remembered as a footnote in the legacy of The Beatles, but he had his own showbiz trajectory. As a wild, energetic front man and guitarist, his star rose in the late 1950s. Due to a glitch he missed nabbing a spot in The Shadows. Then he went to Germany where, for a few years, there was more interest in him than in his “pick up band” i.e. The Beatles—who called Sheridan “The Teacher” despite (or because of) his crazy ways and occasional fisticuffs. After Beatlemania, Sheridan kept on as a successful German-based pop star, segueing into blues and jazz and involving himself in bizarre side hustles, anti-Communist platforms, and for a time he ran with Bagwhan Sri Rajneesh. Sheridan was secretive about his personal life, but he was wide open on the public stage.
The Tony Sheridan & The Beatles cover of “My Bonnie” prompted me to impulsively record it in a grunge-y San Francisco warehouse loft: Fast, dirty, and just for fun. On a cosmic jukebox, this track would play next to “Hang On to Yourself” (David Bowie), “I Knew the Bride When She Used to Rock’n’Roll” (Dave Edmunds), “Jailhouse Rock” (Elvis Presley), and “God Save the Queen” (Sex Pistols). Meanwhile, HB TS and thank you for your instructive energy! https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/my-bonnie-remastered-2021-2
THE BEATLES AND TONY SHERIDAN & THE BEAT BROTHERS Beatles Oldies. 1981 Japanese 24-track double LP featuring the 1961 Hamburg recordings. Housed in a superb gatefold picture sleeve with 4-page insert featuring lyrics and Tony Sheridan's memories of the era, and obi-strip. The sleeve displays just a little light wear to the edges & corners, the labels have just a couple of spindle marks whilst the vinyl remains very clean, overall an excellent example. In the Beginning (Circa 1960) (1970) by The Beatles featuring Tony Sheridan
This album is actually Tony Sheridan featuring The Beatles or The Beat Brothers as they were known when they recorded these songs as Tony Sheridan's backing band. The Beatles are featured prominently only on two songs on this album, "Ain't She Sweet" which is sung by John Lennon and the instrumental "Cry for a Shadow" which is the only Beatles song that is credited as being written by Harrison/Lennon.
This is also the only album that features The Beatles original drummer, Pete Best. He was replaced by Ringo Starr during the recording of the Beatles first studio album.
The Beatles original bassist Stu Sutcliffe was present at these recording sessions but he did not play.
There were many variations of this album released, under many different titles, such as "The Beatles First," "The Beatles in Hamburg," "In the Beginning" and many more. Each of these differently titled albums used the same early recordings of Tony Sheridan and the Beatles and had the same song list.
The earliest release that I'm aware of under the title In the Beginning (Circa 1960) is from Polydor Records in 1970. The copy I have, pictured here is an original 1970 pressing.
The song "Cry for a Shadow" is misprinted as "Cry for My Shadow" on the record label.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to “My Bonnie,” the 1962 single by Tony Sheridan & The Beatles. Like millions of kids, I learned “My Bonnie” in elementary school, and it translates to a simple romantic theme of longing for one’s sweetheart from far away. However, in 1746 it was a political insurrection toast sung by Jacobites in Scotland, tributing the exiled “Bonnie” Prince Charles Edward Stuart (“Bonnie” = “highly favored” in Scottish vernacular). Fast forward to 1961-62: Tony Sheridan was a star performer who hired The Beatles (a.k.a. The Beat Brothers) to back him for gigs and recordings, and their rock’n’roll remake of “My Bonnie” was a minor hit. 2 years later Beatlemania took hold and the track was reissued as a Beatles record (it’s still an entry in studies of Fab Four roots). Their version inspired me to do it, punking it up with influence from David Bowie (“Hang on to Yourself”), Dave Edmunds, and The Sex Pistols. Listen here:
