rossi has a very apathetic personality, so he comes off as bored or uncaring for a lot of people. plus his sort of indifference when he won the 500 in 2016 was off putting for a lot of fans. he's since learned to appreciate indy, but most of the dislike is related to his persona.

But what about the rally fic?

it's a little tricky because my goal with this one was just a road trip aesthetic in general, and it was supposed to be set in the states. so you know, buying candy at gas stations and driving through the nevada desert. I guess as soon as I knew that it was going to be about mongolia instead, it was just camping scenes. little tents clustered around a dead campfire under the stars, ringed by similarly shitty little cars, on a vast open plain marred only by tire tracks in the dirt highway.

or maybe it was baku, staring at the stripped bones of both a street circuit and a shared failure, and realising that no one cares as soon as the spotlight is off. definitely swimming in the sea off the rocks of the dubrovnik city wall. sunrise balloon spotting in cappadocia, sleeping on the bare tarmac of an industrial harbour. more scenes yet to come 👀

slightly tangential but I'm begging you to watch this video (2 hour mongol rally 2013 vlog by my favourite team, skip to ~7 mins in to miss the fundraising blurbs. two south africans, an australian, and a british guy taking the route across the caspian, the deep cut through eastern turkmenistan, and the pamir highway <3 they are my besties)

I'm planning to start watching Black Sails after I read the Butterscotch AU. I keep rereading it every like 6 months and it's hard for me to consume entertainment but I'm gonna! I'm gonna!

omg, to have read Butterscotch without watching canon is a high honour!

I will say, for anyone else who’s thinking of watching Black Sails: it is a heavy show that doesn’t pull punches, emotionally, so it is hard to get through. The entire first season is dudebro-baiting, trying to lure in the GoT crowd with sex/violence/sexual violence. I need to warn anyone who watches the show that there is a (skippable) rape scene in the third episode: @flintrage has done a trigger warning list with timestamps, which is the best resource for anyone getting into the show imo.

I hated it the first time I watched it, but I stuck around knowing it would have a major queer narrative (if you can, avoid spoilers beyond that because it would be incredible to watch spontaneously). It’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. You will be a different person at the end of it.

honestly there's not many that are downright rancid. graham rahal can sometimes have bad takes and be a karen on twitter, but he's not really what i'd call rancid. the real guy no one likes (including the grid) is the go-to back-up santino ferrucci. but luckily he usually only races the indy 500.

I am not a big fan of vocalless music generally, and I also turn the music down when playing video games. In fact I only know this song because I watched my sister beat Sans. But I really like it! (Still kept the music down for my own Undertale playthrough, though.)

I guess I spoiled the Canon as much as I could before reading because I didn't know I'd eventually decide to watch the show, so I knew what waa going on and who these people were. But also as a deaf person, I find that each time I'm pissed off by hearing people, I go and read a chapter or two from the au, always makes me feel better.

I’m gonna cry! I am so glad I can provide something in those long hours of deaf rage (which I too have had many of, and wrote right into the story), even in a fanfic for a canon you’re not familiar with <3

There’s plenty of in-jokes in Butterscotch, but being an AU I can see how it would work on its own. The show is so rich as a narrative for marginalised people: the themes in Butterscotch about the Social Model and radical justice are translated directly from the show’s queer utopia/anti-imperialist ideology.
