Okay, I've haven't done leatherworking myself (though I want to) but I do watch videos of people who do (mostly historical shoe making), and some tips I've picked up is that it can help to wax the thread, and that you can just skive down certain areas (you don't have to thin the whole thing). Some really fine work is actually done by gluing the thread to boar bristles instead of using needles, because thin needles are more likely to bend or break than a boar bristle, which can be straightened out again without snapping.

Also that if you're going it on your lap, you'd better have a big, thick piece of leather to protect you so you don't stab yourself with a tool. Always remember that if it can go through leather, it can go through your skin. Safety first!

Skivving opens up a whole host of techniques for getting a professional finish, but most people get frustrated because their knives are absolute dogshit. So, folks, remember to get your tools sharpened - so few come properly sharp out of the box!

I made a new handle for this saw I got from a garage sale. Swapped from a plastic handle to a solid walnut handle, carved to fit my hands. The left is before the right is after

Finally got around to creating a sheath for that French leather pairing knife I got years ago as part of a SFCB class. Had forgotten it (so intense was my NO! reaction to working with leather) and the fact I could use it to trim my text blocks till I took the SFCB edge decorating class. Embedded two tiny magnets in the case to help hold the blade in place. Covered with paper made during the Renegade retreat back in April*, marbled by the talented @ziezie13.

Is now mounted on wall in craft room next to my old thread holder (which I enjoy the sight of but seldom touch these days-- the spools of thread I use now residing elsewhere)
