So, I'm quite in character a lot, which is where I can be like, sardonic or annoyed. But I'm actually not like that." "You don't seem that way to me at all. i'm so sick and fucking tired of the internalised ableism that is present in almost every single person i've ever met in the professional/commercial arts. i've had my costume professor tell my crying friend to her face that the creative pursuit is more important than her mental health. my stage design professor tells all his students that if you want to make it as an artist you need to be willing to work yourself to the brink of burnout or further. many of their students have quit because of these mindsets and the older ones are still here because they agree. they pass it on. one one of them told me that co-student who has a neurogenerative disease really needs to overthink her career choice. i was too scared to say anything but i wanted to scream at her YOU DON'T FUCKING GET IT DO YOU. WHEN YOU'RE DISABLED THERE IS NO CORRECT CAREER CHOICE FOR YOU. BECAUSE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS BUILT AROUND ABLED PEOPLE. i'm sick and tired of other artists telling me how hard the business is. and that you need a thick skin to survive it. fuck you. shut the fuck up. i just don't understand how artists who are supposed to be able to think outside the box don't see how messed up it is to think this way

seriously, disabled people and allys and anyone who ever gets in a situation like this, and anyone at all really, NEVER stop being fucking angry about it. don't be like me. be loud. speak up for yourself and for your friends. hold onto your principles until the last fucking second and don't be polite about it. don't accept defeat. they will never be right about this

Francesca Caccini (Italian, 1587 - probably by 1645), "Io mi distruggo."

Amanda Majeski, soprano; Anthony Reed, bass; Brandon J. Acker, lute; Craig Trompeter, viola da gamba; Mark Shuldiner, harpsichord. Filmed on September 29, 2020 at The Poetry Foundation, Chicago, under the auspices of the Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago.

Majeski and Reed are both a bit off their turf in the early Baroque repertoire, but good for them for stretching!

Francesca Caccini is the earliest woman composer whose music was published during her lifetime. She is also believed to have been the first woman to compose an opera, La liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina (1625), but this piece is from her other major surviving work, ll primo libro delle musiche a una e due voci (1618), a collection of 32 songs and four duets.

We had a guy on tour with us 'cause George had a funny arm and he was trying to fix it, and one night there was a case of root beer on the bus, and he was quite a naive young guy, and he drank the root beers thinking it was beer and then he pretended to be drunk in front of everybody. And instead of laughing at him, I felt a bit sorry for him. I tell you what, now I feel sorry for him, because the placebo effect or the idea of… what I'm trying to do, simulating a breakdown, really, is like… as you know, the walls get a bit thin. Do you know what I mean? I know, it's all good. I'm all right. Thank you though. Like, genuinely. Thank you a lot."
