#1931 - Cordyline australis - Cabbage Tree
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA tī kōuka or cabbage-palm. Originally Dracaena australis, when it was described by Georg Forster in 1786, after Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander collected some in 1769.
Another of Aotearoa’s most iconic plants. The binomial refers to the shape of the rhizomes - club-like - and the southern distribution. The common name name is likely down to Georg Forster again, writing in his Voyage round the World (1777) who discusses the edibility of the central shoot in comparison to the ‘true cabbage palm’ - probably the cabbage palmetto (Sabal palmetto) of Florida.
It’s certainly edible - not only do a wide variety of New Zealand native fauna love the stuff, the Māori cultivated it for the rhizomes and growing shoots. The meter-long leaves were also collected for the very strong fibres they contained, which were used as rope and as protective capes and legwear when travelling anywhere Matagouri and Spaniard Grass grows. You’ll recall those from earlier posts - protective legwear is strongly recommended.
The Cordylines of NZ were probably derived from an influx of tropical plants some 15 million years ago, and promptly diversified. They certainly thrive in cool climates much better than similar-looking plants - they’re now grown as far north as Scotland, and one common name in use in the UK is Torquay Palm.
A healthy Cabbage Tree can be as tall as 20m, but there’s not many of those left. That’s partly down to land clearance, Rural Decline where a lone Cabbage Palm that was lucky enough to be left behind by land clearance is slowly killed by livestock and rabbits, and Sudden Decline caused by the bacterium Phytoplasma australiense, which may be spread from tree to tree by the introduced passionvine hopper from Australia.

English Riviera Palm trees cut down
Icons of the Riviera removed suddenly The English Riviera Wheel by David Smith. CC2.0. Torbay Council has suddenly cut down the iconic palm trees in the Italian garden in Torquay; the symbol of the English Riviera. The act was done with almost no warning, in an echo of Plymouth’s widely-panned tree felling on Armada way earlier in 2023. The palm trees have been present in the garden since…

Cordyline australis, commonly known as the new zealand cabbage tree, Torbay palm, Torquay palm, named by North Island Māori: tītī in the north, tī manu in the central uplands, tarariki in the east and wharanui in the west, its a widely branched monocot tree endemic to New Zealand.
Кордилина ю́жная растение вид рода Кордилина семейства Спаржевые.
Family:Asparagaceae
Subfamily:Lomandroideae
Genus:Cordyline
It provided durable fibre for textiles, anchor ropes, fishing lines, baskets, waterproof rain capes and cloaks, and sandals.
The genus name Cordyline derives from an Ancient Greek word for a club (kordyle), a reference to the enlarged underground stems or rhizomes, while the species name australis is Latin for "southern". The common name cabbage tree is attributed to early settlers having used the young leaves as a substitute for cabbage.
The stems and fleshy rhizomes are high in natural sugars and were steam-cooked in earth ovens (umu tī, a large type of hāngi) to produce kāuru, a carbohydrate-rich food used to sweeten other foods. The growing tips or leaf hearts were stripped of leaves and eaten raw or cooked as a vegetable, when they were called kōuka—the origin of the Māori name of the tree. Large parties trimmed the cut stems, and left them to dry for days or weeks. As well as stems, the rhizomes—extensions of the trunk below the surface of the ground shaped like enormous carrots—were also dug up to be cooked.
Juice from the leaves was used for cuts, cracks and sores. An infusion of the leaves was taken internally for diarrhoea and used externally for bathing cuts. The leaves were rubbed until soft and applied either directly or as an ointment to cuts, skin cracks and cracked or sore hands. The young shoot was eaten by nursing mothers and given to children for colic. The liquid from boiled shoots was taken for other stomach pains.

Plant of the Day
Friday 22 November 2019
In Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, the white fruits of Cordyline australis (cabbage palm, Torquay palm) were providing a display even from a distance. This monocotyledon is an endemic to New Zealand, with long evergreen leaves in dense clusters at the branch tips and creates a small tree with stout branches coming from a single trunk. The distinctive habit of this plant means it needs to be used with care within garden and landscape designs.

Great Ocean Road, Victoria

The door bell rings and standing in the porch with a hopeful
Expectant look on their face is generally an Australian or an American. The question that follows is nearly always the same. "Can you tell me where we can find Fawlty Towers?" ingramer Eight years of such enquiries has honed our responses well. We smile sympathetically, beckon them in and begin with "Well... " We then have to explain to an increasingly disappointed visitor that although the hotel that inspired the series still exists in Torquay, none of the shots either external or internal were ever from Torquay. The internal shots were part of a set created at BBVC TV centre whilst the exterior of the hotel itself was a Country Club in Buckinghamshire (Now sadly long gone) whilst the remaining exterior scenes (mainly street scenes) were largely filmed in and around Harrow in North West London. This situation is one that many hotel owners in and around Torquay experience in one form or another quite routinely
It is hard to think of any other 1970's TV show that can still prompt its admirers to travel half way across the world in a 21st century form of a pilgrimage. It's unlikely that people are searching out the bus depot that was home to Reg Varney and the crew of On the Buses, or the adult education centre where the not so hilarious international stereotypes gathered for their English lessons in Mind your Language. And despite its brilliance it's hard to imagine coach loads of people turning up at the Surbiton homes where Margot, Jerry, Tom and Barbara lived in The Good Life.
A huge amount has been written about Fawlty Towers over the Years and much of that cites the limit to 12 episodes as one of the reasons that it has become such an enduring classic. The argument goes that because the writing brilliance of John Cleese and Connie Booth was focused on so few episodes and they quit before the quality had a chance to diminish, we have been left with a series in which everyone is a classic.
The 40 year old series series has left us wonderful comedy moments such as Basil and his German guests, the superb Mrs Richards (Played by Joan Sanderson), Basil the rat, and of course Waldorf Salad.
The series' birth in the mid seventies was not an easy one. Initial reactions from senior BBC executives were not positive. Some early TV critics were also hostile. One such critic Richard Ingrams who was then TV critic of The Spectator found himself on the receiving end of John Cleese's vengeance when a character called Mr Ingrams was caught in his room with a blow up doll. Industrial unrest at the BBC also contributed to a difficult birth for the series.
Fans of the series have longed for more Basil and Cybil and for a time they were tantalised by the prospect of something new. Even as late as the 1990s John Cleese spoke of a feature length episode in which a retired Basil and Sybil went to Barcelona in order to visit Manuel and his family. The idea was that an increasingly infuriated Basil experienced maddening delays at Heathrow Airport only to then find his flight hi jacked by a terrorist. An apoplectic Basil single handedly overpowered the hijacker just to be told by the pilot that they were returning to Heathrow. Beside himself with rage Basil then hijacked the plane himself and insisted that it land at Barcelona whereupon Basil was arrested and spent the rest of the time in a Spanish jail. Obviously such a premise offers masses of opportunity for classic Basil Fawlty but in the end John Cleese wisely decided to forget the idea. One only has to look at the feature length episodes of Dad's Army, On the Buses, Steptoe and Son and Are you Being Served? to realise that it is hard to take some of our best loved characters beyond 30 minutes and keep the comedy going. Sometimes too, a character away from their natural situation seems strange and out of place.
Some of the ardent Fawlty Towers fans have spoken mysteriously of a 13th episode that was written and filmed but never made it passed initial editing. Titled The Robbers this episode supposedly dealt with a blackout at the hotel and neatly wrapped things up bringing the series to a conclusion. Reasons for its failure to be aired are many but include the possibility that it might have prevented a third series which still seemed a possibility at the time. Despite denials by all involved the rumour of episode 13 persists particularly in cyberspace. However, it would have required a conspiracy on the scale of a Dan Brown novel to have kept such a thing under wraps for so long.
The Fawlty Towers characters did pop up for a while after the end of the series. Basil and Manuel featured in some corporate training videos for an oil company whilst Cybil made a significant appearance in a Children in Need sketch when she appeared as the new owner of the Hotel in Hotel Babylon.
Although Donald Sinclair the inspiration for Basil is long dead, the ghost of Basil still stalks the palm tree lined roads of Torquay. Behind the net curtained guest houses and B&B's of the English Riviera it's still possible to find eccentric owners who rule their tiny worlds with much the same exasperation, frustration & barminess. Some revel in the description of themselves as latter day Basil Fawltys forgetting that much of the comedy in the programme stemmed from the awfulness of Basil's relationship with his wife, from his total unsuitability for a career dealing with the public and from a crippling frustration with his position in life. Mrs Sinclair outlived her husband by some way and valiantly defended his reputation believing that he had been unfairly maligned by the series. However, she did accept that her late husband was perhaps not ideally suited to being a hotel proprietor.

3 years on, we are gathered here today to gift you this sand formation with love. 💜 At sunrise this morning, on a beach in Torquay, Australia, the Purple One appeared, arms extended to embrace us all as one. Prince Rogers Nelson did not pretend to be a celebrity, he was born a star. His music will continue to touch the hearts minds and souls of many around the world. Today we reflect on the soundtrack of our lives, of all that Prince composed and gifted us with.
Each and every time we were blessed to see him live, he always had us in the palm of his hands.
We hope we fill your heart with the purple love we feel.

A heavy solid familiar warmth in the bed next to her, she rolled over curling herself round him pulling him as close as she could. She could feel his heart beat under her fingers, the short hair at the nape of his neck tickled her cheek. She knew if she reached up and touched his jaw it would be scratchy with stubble, but she didn’t she just lay there eyes closed breathing in the familiar scent of his skin. “It will be time to get up soon.” a murmur from the depths of his pillow. Chris shut her eyes more tightly.
“Just a little longer, blue eyes.”She knew she was dreaming, she pushed the thought away refused to acknowledge it, this is real, this is real she told herself, too late. She opened her eyes, dawn light seeping through the curtains and the space beside her empty. She didn’t cry, she had cried back when the nightmares had first started. Now all that was left was a dull ache, he was gone and her own mind persisted in reminding her, even after all this time.
Chris made herself get up and open the curtains. The uniform grey sky of an English autumn greeted her, she shut the curtains again with a snap. The combination of the English weather and the return of her nightmares made her long for home, for the warm Louisiana sun. Another thought to avoid, like she avoided the gaze of the picture on her dressing table. She couldn’t look at him not this morning, not enough sleep she told herself sternly. Shower, clothes, breakfast, go to work. In the end she skipped breakfast, her first stop of the morning was to see Mike and there was no telling what would be lying around on his lab tables.
Driving along the back road into Torquay where it ran up over the undulating hills, hemmed in by tall hedges could be claustrophobic. Occasionally the trees would part and Chris could see the land dropping down to the distant grey sea. It was too early for much traffic and the gates of Berry Pomeroy primary school were firmly closed as she drove past. Even the roundabout at five lanes was empty, in the summer it usually consisted of one long hellish traffic jam made of holiday makers and desperate locals trying to get to work. This autumn morning it was quiet and before long she was driving along the seafront. A glance at the clock told her that she was too early still for Mike. Parking the land rover by the glassy new frontage of the Princess Theatre and she bought a coffee from a small shack on the promenade. Bending her head against the wind she walked briskly past the ornamental fountain with its carved leaping fish, turned off now for the winter months it's basin full of brown leaves. Past the incongruous palm trees to her favourite spot next to a red cliffed tree topped headland. The burnt orange sand of the beach was hidden beneath the incoming tide, she leaned on the sea wall and stared out to sea.
It was a good place to think this little curve of shoreline, the waves were loud this morning and if she concentrated hard enough she could block out all the other human sounds. When the tension finally dissipated from her shoulders, she let herself think about the case. The crime scene photos with their high definition goriness would probably be lodged in her mind forever. She pushed the images away and pictured instead the weird symbol cut into the tree. Three interlocking triangles, carefully carved and that bird skeleton below- a raven, forensics had informed her. She had intended to do some research into the bloody thing last night. Three quarters of the way down a bottle of cheap red she had decided that it could wait. Besides, she had a horrible certainty that the facts she needed would not be found easily. Chris sighed and fished her phone out of her pocket, scrolling down she found the number and hesitated before she dialled.
“Baby girl, that you?” Her Aunt Asasa, voice scratchy with age, southern accent reminding Chris of home.
“Morning Aunty, I wasn’t sure you would be up”
“Sleep is for the dead, child” Chris could hear her aunt moving about, there was a click probably a lighter her aunt had a fondness for French cigarettes. “What time is it there?”
“Just gone seven,” Chris didn’t bother commenting on her aunt smoking, the old girl would just snort and tell her to mind her own business.
“and did you have a restful night baby girl?”
“Yeah, I slept fine aunty,”it was a lie, even though her aunt was four thousand miles away, Chris still felt a blush crawling up her neck.
“Uh huh” Asasa muttered, clearly not fooled.
“Asasa I need your-”
“Are you still having nightmares about him?” It wasn’t a question, it was a demand. Chris drew a ragged breath into her suddenly tight chest, there was no point avoiding the question. Asasa would either badger her until she answered or refuse to help her and hang up.
“No, just dreams, just dreams now. Can we talk about this another time?”
“You have to let him go child, the living should not try to hold on to the dead,” Chris bit her lip, she knew her aunty meant well, but she could have done without the reminder this morning.
“Aunty drop this please”
“I know you don’t want to hear this, but don’t wish him back,” Chris bit back a harsh response, of course I want him back you old harpy! A traitorous tear slid from the corner of her eye, she wiped it away angrily. Why did Asasa do this every time they had a conversation?
“Aunty, please I need your help with a case,” That distracted the old woman, Chris could almost see the way her eyes would brighten.
“I’m listening”
“I’m sending you some pictures. I need you to tell me if you recognise the symbol, or anything else for that matter,” Chris had bought the smart phone for Asasa last Christmas, not expecting her ancient aunty to be able to master it, and secretly enjoying the thought. Of course Asasa had taken it to like an arthritic duck to water, nullifying Chris’ amusement and flooding her phone with pictures of everything from her hoodoo shop to what she was having for dinner. She could hear her now tutting to herself.
“I’m sorry Cherie, I think it's a Norse symbol of some kind, not really my area,”
“It was a nasty spell, nearly made me throw up,” dammit it, she had been hoping Asasa would be able to help. She didn’t like the connotations of this case.
“Well, I have an old friend lives near you. She’s a witch of the Norse sort, I’ll text you her address.”
“Unless she is the one doing this of course.”
“She’s not like that baby girl.”
“Is she at least human?”
“Mostly, she has a pet crow.”
“Okay fine, what’s her name”
“Selkie Elliot,” Chris sighed, that didn’t sound like the name of someone she could call up in court.
“Okay thanks Asasa, I’ll look her up.”
For once Mike’s lab tables were relatively clear of gory remains, the man himself was seated in his small office surrounded by piles of printouts and his customary array of empty coffee cups. He smiled at her genially as she walked in.
“Llewelyn, you didn’t need to come over I could have emailed you the details,” Chris returned his smile and seated herself opposite him.
“I know I just needed to get away from Totnes for a while, the chief superintendent is breathing down my neck and as for the press,” She shrugged in resignation. “It's only a matter of time before someone leaks some of the more gory details, Papers are screaming for blood as it is.”
“Well I don’t envy you, Coffee?”
“Yes please, don’t want any blood getting in my caffeine stream,”Mike chuckled and poured her a large mug from the pot he always had standing ready.
“That is not entirely a healthy attitude DCI.”
“Healthy and normal went out the window a while ago.”
“Well, I have some news for you. DNA testing confirms we have all of the victims. No unknown trace yet, but you saw the crime scene something could still show up.” Mike shuffled the papers on his desk, found whatever he was looking for and leaned back. “Do you want to hear the worst of it?” He peered at her over his glasses, pale blue eyes sombre.
“I need to know, Mike”
“the teeth marks were human.,”
“Bollocks”
“Yes I think that was the term I used, you are getting the hang of our british swear words finally.”
“Mike I’ve been here nearly a decade,” it was an old joke.
“Eight years actually and you have nearly lost the accent,” Mike grinned at her.
“oh bless your heart, you fixin for a bruising sir.” Chris stood up and raided the coffee pot again, this time loading the cup with sugar. “I still have it when needed, now what are you trying to avoid telling me, come on Mike I’m a big girl”
“Alright you got me, there were some things the bodies were all missing, I mean they were all missing something, but all of them were missing the heart and liver,” Mike sat back in his chair sipping his coffee.
“Eaten?”
“Not in my opinion, cut out probably peri-mortem.”
“before they were dead? Is that the official cause of death?”
“you know we will have to wait for the inquest for that, but my gut says those babbies didn’t die quickly” Mike was upset she could tell by the way his posh boy accent slipped, revealing more rural roots.
“Christ Mike, what is going on here?”
“That’s your job Chris and like I said I don’t envy you,” Chris stood up and walked over to the small window and stared at the ruins of the medieval abbey on the green, squat and dark in the low autumn light.
“I don’t even know where to start with this Mike, I’ve got uniform checking on every crazy in south Devon, something tells me this is not going to be that easy.”
“Probably not,” levering himself out of his chair Mike pulled on his lab coat. “Look Chris?”
“Yes Mike?”
“Why don’t you come to dinner with Margaret and me this Sunday,” the pathologist was blushing slightly, Chris tilted her head and narrowed her eyes.
“Is Nichola coming?” She asked suspiciously, Mike’s eyes darted to the picture on his desk where a blond haired thirty something was laughing into the camera.
“Yes, you two would get on great.”
Laughing Chris squeezed Mike’s arm, “I tried dating, it didn’t work, but thanks for trying-again.”
“Think about it, invitation is there” Mike called after her.
Mike meant well, Chris knew that and she was touched by his concern. She wasn’t ready though and every time someone asked why, all she could remember was a gunshot, the smash of glass and him. Staring down in disbelief as a red stain spread across his white shirt and falling to the ground without a sound. She shivered, breath catching in her throat and clenched her hands in her pockets as the now customary wave of guilt washed over her. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, apologising for maybe the millionth time to someone who could no longer hear her.
she shoved the thought away savagely and hurried back along the seafront, now populated by the usual winter crowd of retirees. Not for the first time Chris wandered what induced them to spend their autumnal years haunting this faded seaside town, the summers were unbearably busy and the winters almost always dreary. It would be cheaper to live in the eternal sunshine of Spain and yet they still came.
“You have got to be kidding me!” she growled, a yellow parking ticket was stuck to the windscreen of the land rover. It made a ugly slurping noise when she ripped it off and left a sticky mess behind on her windscreen. Chris scanned the road and found the source of the wretched thing. A tall skinny person wearing the uniform of a traffic warden, the blue band on the hat a bright spot on this otherwise dull morning.  She strode up behind them and patted them on the shoulder. “Excuse me” she growled. The skinny one visibly jumped and backed away hands held up.
“I should warn you if you assault me, i will phone the police” he squeaked. Chris fished her warrant card out of her pocket and held it up. The man, no kid he couldn’t be more than twenty gaped at her like a stranded fish.
“unnecessary, I’m DCI Llewelyn, you ticketed my car, when i was on official police business.” usually she wouldn’t make a scene, but this morning she let her anger get the better of her.
“I’m sorry Ma’am, parking restrictions are in place today and i didn’t realise that yours was an official police vehicle.”
“It’s not, but i was on police business.”
“I’m sorry Ma’am, but them’s the rules.” he smiled a nervous smile and fiddled with his pen. Behind them the owner of the car he was about to ticket arrived and seeing the traffic warden otherwise engaged, jumped in his car and drove off without a backward glance. Chris made herself take a breath, the boy was after all just doing his job.
“I’m sorry PEO-” she squinted at  the name on his jacket “Perkins.”
“Percival Perkins” he interjected then looked sheepish.
“Percival?” she could not help asking.
“Me Mother was a fan of arthurian romance.” he explained. Chris smothered the urge to laugh.
“Okay Percival, i apologise it’s been a trying morning. I will pay my ticket” ‘and get a sign for the damn car’ she added in her head.
“Right you are Ma’am. but while you’re here could you take a look at something for me?”
“Sure Perkins” she wondered what on earth the kid wanted.
“There’s this car…” his voice trailed off, he gave her a worried look.
“Where?”
“ in the carpark, the one by the marina. It’s been there since last night.”
“Why do you want me to take a look, ring the local lads.”
“Please Ma’am? you are CID and I don’t want to get laughed at, again” He was staring at his boots and suddenly looked a lot younger than she had thought.
“Okay fine, I’ll take a look. show me.”
They walked down the seafront to the marina, the brackish water with it’s polluted chemical smell assaulting the nostrils long before they arrived. Chris paid scant attention to the array of yachts bobbing up and down on the water, she had never seen the appeal of the sea. it was nice to look at, but beyond that she couldn’t see the point of messing about in boats. Percival led her to a Red BMW parked at the far end of the car park,  next to where the sea met the harbour wall. she could taste the salt in the air.  The Car was splattered with white droppings from the gulls that constantly wheeled in the sky above. Chris frowned and grabbed percivals arm stopping him from going closer.
“Perkins, this car looks like it has been here longer than just one night”
“I wouldn’t know about that Ma’am. I’ve been on holiday with me mother the  last two weeks.”
“Who would know?”
“Frank Tucker, but he’s getting on, retiring next month. He don’t always walk the full route if you get my meaning.” Perkins gave her a conspiratorial wink.
“I get your meaning Perkins. stay here”
“You sure Ma’am?”
”Ever seen a dead body?”
“No, why do you say that?” Perkins looked terminally confused, which Chris was starting to realise was his number one personality trait. she sighed and pointed at the car.
“There is a hose attached to the exhaust, what does that tell you?”
“Oh” Perkins went very pale and took a step backwards. Chris couldn’t help feeling sorry for the kid, obviously no-one had told him that even in traffic management corpses could sometimes make an unwelcome appearance.
“You stay here, i’ll go see what we have here.” She told him gently, for a second he looked grateful, the look faded though and he seemed to pull himself together.
“No DCI, you should ‘ave a witness, I’ll go with you.”
“PEO Perkins, your dedication does you proud, there is no need.”
“It’s fine, I’m applying to hendon when i finish uni. Coppers got to deal with this alot right?”
“Yes we do.”
“Then i should learn now, get it over with” he was still pale, Chris permitted a small smile to tug at her lips, she felt a little bad about nearly laughing at the kid earlier.
“Alright then, just don’t touch anything and don’t throw up.” she approached the car carefully, the hose did indeed snake from the exhaust to the front window. The gap had been plugged with a supermarket bag gaffer taped to the inside. She leaned down and peered in, Perkins was right behind her. Chris heard his sharp intake of breath as he saw the bright red cheek pressed up against the side window. Through the condensation slicking the outside of the glass, blonde hair was visible. a female probably, Chris reasoned and stepped back. She dragged the shocked Perkins a safe distance away , he was bravely trying to hang on to his breakfast.
“You should call this in, I’ll stay till the locals get here okay”
“Yes Ma’am, are they all like that?”

The Turner Tales - Chapter Four - The Perfect Day
Patrick couldn't help but chuckle when he was sat on a blanket on the beach one afternoon and he watched while Shelagh and Angela played on the shore, his wife holding their little girl's hand in her own as she jumped over each wave as it came in. He was able to hear the two of them giggling from where he was sat and it just made his love for them both deeper.
Angela looked so beautiful in the pale blue swimming costume that her mother had bought for her for their long weekend in Torquay and he had to admit that his wife looked radiant in the floral summer dress that she had chosen to wear. The smile that was on her lips didn't go unnoticed by him and he felt a wave of relief wash over him at the sight of it.
She had been so tired and emotional over the last couple of weeks - all of her demands as a working woman, a wife and a mother to their two children had taken their toll on her - and it had been on the night that Patrick had found her crying while sat on the edge of their bed that he had told her that he had thought a couple of days away had been on the cards.
She had attempted to tell him that the two of them didn't have time for a weekend away but he had known that if she had continued to push herself then she would have burned out. He had reminded her of when he had had his breakdown due to exhaustion and all of the stress that he had been under and he had told her that he didn't want to see her go through that, which had led her to agree to having a couple of days away from Poplar and from her work.
Now, as he watched her lower herself down to Angela's level in order to give her forehead a kiss, he could tell that she wasn't thinking about all of the demands that were waiting for her back at home. She was letting herself live in the moment and make the most of the time that she was able to spend with him and their children and he loved seeing how relaxed she was.
A tender smile spread across his features when he saw Angela running over to him a short time later, the love that he held for her evident in his eyes as he opened his arms to her and allowed her to enter his lap once she had reached him. 'You're all wet, Angel Girl!’ He wound his arms around her waist as he chuckled before snugging her closer to his chest, his perfect little girl blessing him with a warm smile as she met his gaze. 'Did you and Mummy have fun?'
She nodded in response before grasping his shirt in her hand and resting her head on his shoulder, Patrick running his fingers through her windswept hair as he watched Shelagh walk over to the two of them. 'Where's Tim disappeared to?' She asked as she sat down beside him.
'He went to get some ice cream for him and Angela a few minutes ago.' He told her. 'Which means that I get to have my girls all to myself until he gets back.' He unwound one arm from around Angela's waist before wrapping it around Shelagh's and drawing her closer, revelling in the sigh that she released when he placed a kiss on her brow. 'Are you enjoying yourself?' He inquired once she had rested her head on his shoulder and pressed her face into his neck.
'I am.' She nodded before kissing the underside of his jaw. 'I'm sorry if I've been snappish or short-tempered with you and the children over the last couple of weeks; I never intended to be, I've just been so tired.' Patrick turned his head in her direction in order to look into her eyes.
'You don't need to apologise darling.' He shook his head. 'You've done nothing wrong.'
She blessed him with a smile. 'I think - when we're back in Poplar - I'm going to stop trying to do everything all at once.' She removed a piece of lint from his shirt as she gazed up at him.
'That's what I've been telling you to do for months.' He teased, causing her to giggle. 'You are an incredible wife, Shelagh, and you are the best mother in Poplar but you're not a machine. You need to let yourself relax every now and again just like everyone else does, sweetheart.'
'I know that now.' She reassured him while stroking Angela's hair with the palm of her hand, a smile on her lips as she could tell that her little girl had grown tired whilst playing in the sea. She tilted her head back against her husband's shoulder after caressing Angela's cheek, her eyes holding nothing but love for him as she looked into his eyes. 'Kiss me, Patrick.' She sighed.
He ran his hand along the curve of her side as he grazed his nose against hers for a second before capturing her lips in a slow kiss, Shelagh tracing the sharpness of his jaw with the tips of her fingers as they allowed their kiss to linger. 'Mum; Dad, there are other people here, you know!' The two of them parted at the sound of their son's voice before laughing at the slight frown that was on his face when he sat down on the blanket and gave Angela her ice cream.
Shelagh snuggled further into her husband's warmth when a silence fell over they and their children, her eyes sparkling as she placed her lips beside his ear. 'This has been the perfect day.' She whispered before kissing him on the cheek and settling into his embrace again.
'It has, my love.' He leaned his forehead against hers.
And the two of them knew that there were many, many more perfect days ahead of them.
Thank you all for reading and please leave a comment - if you would like to - to let me know what you thought of it!

Following the announcement today (20th August) that casinos in Scotland can re-open from Monday 24th August, final preparations will be made at our three venues in Scotland.
We are very pleased to have been given the green light to open these casinos and are looking forward to welcoming back our customers. Over these past few months, a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes and we can promise our customers a safe and enjoyable experience when they return to our venues.”

UPDATE: 14 AUGUST 2020
We are very pleased to finally have been given the green light to open and are looking forward to welcoming customers back.
Over the past few months, we’ve been working tirelessly to ensure all our venues up and down the country are Covid secure to provide our returning customers with the safest and most enjoyable environments possible.
Now that our ability to open has been fully confirmed, final preparations will be made and we will open the majority of our casinos from Saturday (15th August).
————————————————————
UPDATE: 31 JULY 2020
Following the latest Government announcement at noon today, we wanted to advise you that we are unable to open our casinos as anticipated tomorrow, the 1st August.
This is extremely disappointing given the hard work and effort that our teams have put in to make the environment safe and secure and we had been hugely looking forward to welcoming you back.
At the moment we do not have a new opening date. We will continue to engage with the Government over the coming days in an attempt to bring some certainty to this situation and we will keep you advised via email, text, the website and our social channels.
————————————————————
UPDATE: 17 JULY 2020
Following today’s (17th July) announcement from the government, we can confirm that we will be re-opening our business in England on the 1st August.
We have been preparing for our re-opening date for several weeks now and have introduced a raft of measures to ensure our premises are safe for both colleagues and customers. We are really looking forward to finally being able to welcome our customers back.
Our three casinos in Scotland will remain closed until the Scottish government allow for them to re-open.
You can find more detail on the measures and steps we have taken here and an idea of what to expect when you come to the casino.
————————————————————
UPDATE: 24 JUNE 2020
We have been working hard to be ready for an opening of our Casinos in England on the 4th July. We’ve been really busy putting measures and actions in place right across the country which would provide a safe environment for both our customers and staff. Disappointingly though it was confirmed on the 23rd June that the Government would not be allowing Casinos in England to open on the 4th July.
At the time of writing we do not have a confirmed date on which we will be authorised to open. The industry however is working hard to lobby Parliament and endeavouring to ensure we are able to open at some point during the summer. Similarly, we do not currently have an authorised date for Scottish Casinos to open.
Tumblr media
We very much look forward to being able to welcome you back into our business and we will continue to update reference this situation on our website as well as where appropriate on email and social media channels.
————————————————————
UPDATE: 19 JUNE 2020
As the leisure industry starts to prepare to come out of lockdown, here at Genting we are getting ready to welcome you back to our casinos. Of course, before we do that a lot of changes are being implemented to ensure that our operation is in line with government guidelines in relation to social distancing, and to ensure that our customers can still enjoy the great experiences we offer in a safe environment.
As I am sure you will appreciate, this is a significant undertaking and requires an enormous amount of work across the entire business. We are currently targeting a 4th July re-opening date – albeit with restrictions on capacity and certain elements of our offer – but our absolute priority will be to ensure our environments are safe for both our customers and our employees and we will not open until we are satisfied that that is the case.
We are currently working through all of the operational implications, but it should be expected that in the short term there may be some changes.
Over the coming days and weeks, we will be finalising these plans and as we do, we will keep you updated through our social channels, on our website and via email communications so that you can start to plan your visit with the peace of mind that the Genting environment will be safe and secure.
In the meantime, we hope that you and your family and friends are safe and well.
————————————————————
UPDATE: 3RD APRIL 2020
Tumblr media
In line with the Government Job Retention Scheme, the vast majority of our 4,000 committed staff have moved, or are imminently moving, to be classed as ‘Furloughed Workers’. A direct result of the ‘furlough’ situation is that we are now going into a ‘radio silence’ and therefore we won’t be communicating in our normal ways until we’re back again. Your My Genting Points have been frozen so that any points due to expire whilst we’re closed will be waiting for you until we’re open again. We look forward to welcoming you back in person soon.
————————————————————
UPDATE: 24TH MARCH 2020
Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Monday 23rd March we have suspended the operation and streaming of our live gaming tables from all casinos within the UK. GentingBet.com our online business continues to operate with both its casino and sportsbook offerings.
————————————————————
