It’s Tougaou/Togao not Touga/Toga...
Sometimes back in ye olden days of anime in the West in the nineties and noughties, fan-made translations and transliterations would spread as the truth, especially if they contained part of the truth.
One such bit of misinformation is the name of the Inu no Taisho (or Inu no Taishou) or InuPapa or Dog General from Inuyasha.
For the longest time, fans said that the name he was given for use in the third movie when Takahashi designed InuPapa, should they ever have used his name, was Toga (闘牙) which means War Fang. Except, if you look at his name in Japanese and at his sons’ names you will notice that Sesshomaru (殺生丸) and Inuyasha (犬夜叉) have three kanji in their names.
Then, years later, I learnt that “Toga”’s name is in reality Togao (闘牙王) meaning War Fang King. Now, the -o/ou ending is sometimes not part of a name and simply a suffix denoting a king as a title, but in fantasy fiction, it is sometimes used as part of a name, and Togao’s title has always been Inu no Taisho, a General, which should never be used before his title as king, had he been one, since kings are higher ranked than generals. The higher title should always be used, particularly by retainers such as Myoga, when speaking of a titled person (and don’t tell me that Myoga wouldn’t brag about his master’s royal title!).
And Togao would also match the pattern of his sons’ names with three kanji.
Anyway, I just thought to write this post because I have seen several new fics use Toga instead of Togao, and I thought misinformation should be cleared up.

Inu no Vember 5th
Written by Jaken, Hiroyuki
Sick Inu no Taisho
(A story of how InuYasha’s parents met)
The 11th century Kyoto, then called Heian-kyo, was very peaceful.
Heian-kyo was founded in 794CE. The ruling family was powerful and the government was stable without any war, rebellion and invasion for more than 200 years. Human emperors and aristocrats were rich and ordinary folks in the whole country could enjoy peaceful lives.
A demon lord named Inu no Taisho lived in the western part of Japan. He was powerful and actually invincible and no one challenged him so he could also have an unusual peaceful life.
He happened to hear humans’ capital was colorful and beautiful. He decided to try seeing it.
He flew to Heian-kyo and found a palace-like building. It was the biggest building around there. From one of the gates emerged a procession. In its middle, a vehicle led by a cow was surrounded and protected by many servants and samurai.
He thought “Humans are always weak and these guards are nothing to me.”
Then a scent came to him. “Huh? A scent I have never smelled. What is that? This scent is subtle and unknown but so sweet and so noble.” He looked inside the vehicle through the window. He found a woman and stared at the left side of her face. She was beautiful, soft and gentle.
The procession was so slow.
He continuously stared at her.
The procession and the vehicle entered a mansion.
When she was gone, he felt himself somewhat relieved. He couldn’t understand why. He looked around the capital and felt disappointed because it was too small for him. He felt a little tired and decided to go back home.
At that night, when he tried to sleep, he felt uneasy. When he closed his eyes, that woman he met in Heian-kyo always appeared to him and he could feel her scent clearly even then. This was the first time he couldn’t have any sleep all the night.
The dawn broke.
He got up and went out. The sunshine was so bright. He couldn’t open his eyes. The woman appeared again inside his eyes. He sighed and sighed deeply once again.
Myoga suddenly talked to him, “What happened to you, my lord? You look pale.”
“I look pale? The demon lord looks pale?”
“Yes. You look rather poisoned. What happened to you? You aren’t what you were.”
He talked to Myoga about what happened the previous day.
“My lord, it’s called koi wazurai, literally the disease of love.”
“The disease of love? Me?”
“Yes, my lord. It’s said to be deadly. Human emperors and aristocrats suffer and some have died from it.
“Died? Have they died from it?”
“Yes. I hear there is the only solution.”
(To be continued)
The next time “A poor poet and a good poem”
