Touhou style myth I absolutely loved drawing.
If you’re Mexican or live in Mexican areas like me, you’ve likely seen or heard of La Calavera Catrina around dios de Los muertos. Mean the dapper skull, it’s the representation of souls traveling over, seen as a skeleton in women’s clothing and a decorated hat, beloved and ready to party. While calaveras have long been used to represent the dead, the Calavera Catrina was first seen in 1913, from which it would be common place as representation of the holiday, in decoration and costume.

Eternal assets edit-work for 東方虚舟 during these pandemic voidyears, now finally aimed at the Eternal Space Quandries of UI. Also means actually arranging up some battlescreens to assess such in. Some day I'll actually explicitly and directly describe the overall shape of this gay myth-vs.-alien-cryptids deckbuilder roguelike (like going on dates before runs for buffs, or kissing unique-elites for their cards) but it'll probably wait as I work towards a state I'd feel ready to commission non-placeholder art for the playable characters.
Still, there's probably something to be (repeatedly) said for how my lack of prior drawing talent and budget resulted in heavily distorting the Creative Commons into some total style incidentally as far away as possible from any other Touhou fangame in existence.

Note
10, 12 and 23!
10. favorite fan game? Subterranean Detectives Orin and Satori! More seriously, I haven't played that many touhou fangames, or at least any big ones. I'd say, I liked Nitorinc quite a lot for its interesting and fun minigames. Also watching a Yuuyuujiteki no Yuukarin playthrough was pretty fun, if you disregard certain... aspects of the art style.
12. favorite remix/fan song?
I don't really have a song I'd call my number one favorite, since I like many different songs for many different reasons. I would say though that my favorite music circle at the moment is definitely Butaotome.
23. do you have any touhou ocs?
I do! They aren't particularly developed though since I haven't really given them too much serious thought.
There are two Moon Rabbit ocs I came up with thinking about the Lunar Capital. One of them is the leader of the Moon Rabbits, based on the original Jade Rabbit from the myths. She doesn't have a name or a reference, but basically she is a tired-looking rabbit wearing green-and-gold clothes with Chinese motifs and a pair of jade-tinted pince-nez glasses. She used to be Chang'e's servant and friend who helped her manage the Moon Rabbits in a mutually beneficial relationship. After Chang'e's imprisonment she was reduced to just a figurehead that nominally represents Moon Rabbits, but in reality just passes down Lunarians' orders on to them.
The other rabbit oc is an overzealous Lunar Defense Corp captain Rigel. She is a comical character loyal to the Lunarians to a ridiculous degree, basically think Invader Zim but bunny. The Watatsuki sisters got tired of her boundless energy and banished sent her to Earth with an extremely important secret mission. Here's a rough sketch of her
Tumblr media
There's also another oc, the next Hakurei shrine maiden, Reimu's apprentice and successor. I am thinking about a story featuring her, so maybe I'll make something about her in the future.
Thanks for the asks!

Like a Hero Out of Myths
Like a Hero out of myths by Dartonus
It's common sense - a normal human is woefully fragile. Without a quirk, one can't hope to be a hero.
But, though he may not know it, Izuku isn't quite human, and a Quirk is not the only form of special ability that exists.

Short reviews of some of my favourite Touhou arranges
Tutti Sound - Nue’s Chaotic Melody (Heian Alien)
Very bombastic but in a good way. Yet it shows moments of restraint which is something not a lot of Touhou arrangers do when they do orchestrations. Gives that ‘Night on Bare Mountain’ vibe, and I like the wacky melodic variations. The title really fits it.
Taqumi - Purely (Pure Furies ~ Whereabouts of the Heart)
Most Electro-swing uses samples from old swing tunes for their melodic components. This arrange sidestepped that and blends real, virtual and electronic instruments in a way that just works and gives real punch. The hook is super catchy and I love the inclusion of electric guitar.
Audio Serrata -  Tears (Sakura, Sakura ~ Japanize Dream)
Since most Touhou arranges stems from Japan, they will naturally take influence of their music culture. This however takes a lot more from the Dutch and the Brittish, and delivers something you’d hear from that DnB scene. The mix is clear, the percussion is crisp and I love that snare.
Ringing Volcano - Strawberry Tango (The Rabbit Has Landed & September Pumpkin)
This arrange is so much fun! It also has very nice sound colours with a lot being recorded. I love how the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic changes brings something new while still staying true to the original tunes.
Melodic Taste - Trine Intention (Pandemonic Planet)
This one has the same bombastic features as the Heian Alien arrange. It’s the one orchestral arrange where I feel like the arrangers really gave attention to orchestral colour, so it isn’t as static as other arranges. The Holst’s ‘The Planets’ and Dvorak’s 9th symphony influences really shows here and is very fitting for Hecatia.
Riverside - Myth of Blast (Grave of Being)
Such a great arrange for such an underrated track. The blend of DnB and rock is also IMO something very underrated. This arrange very much feels like a Pendulum meets anime tune. In fact, I feel like this track could very much be used as an OP in a Touhou anime for a MoF arc.
xi-on - Hartmann’s Youkai Girl
I love the drumming style in xi-on’s arranges, it’s very soloistic and throws some surprises at you. That said, Koishi’s theme is perfect for Jazz. The melodies lends itself very well to swing rhyhtm and xi-on capitalizes well on that.
MP -  Subterraneans' 4th mov. : Allegretto vivace (Satori Maiden)
So this guy wrote a frikkin’ 4 mvt Piano Concerto based on SA, wow. I like the romantic/classical era style of the piece, and it’s the only arrange I’ve heard so far to employ a fugato, which is really cool! Unfortunately it uses some more low-quality samples, and I’d love to hear it with more expensive ones.

For those of my followers who don’t know what touhou is, and would like to know more, check under the gap.  er readmore
And always feel free to browse the Wiki! There’s tons of lore and info to check out!
The Franchise
Touhou is a multimedia dōjinshi (think indie) franchise created by Junya Ota, more commonly known by his nickname ZUN. ZUN (yes, all letters are capitalize. no, I don't know why.) is the sole creator, designer, writer, artist, and publisher of this franchise, although a few manga and games were helped from other people/companies.
The series currently consists of: - 19 Video Games for PC - 5 Completed Manga - 1 Currently Ongoing Manga - 7 Books (Ranging from in-character guides to actual stories) - 7 Original CD's (Using music not found in the other material but considered part of the Touhou franchise. Comes with more stories for each song)
This is not a bad collection for just one guy.
The Games
The main part of the Touhou franchise is its video games. All games are designed to be played on a computer (mostly Windows). Touhou is a vertical top-down shooter with a greater emphasis on dodging, or "bullet hell" game. Each game has a choice between 2-4 different characters with each character getting 2-3 different types of shot. You then proceed to 6 different stages with each stage ended by a boss. There is usually an extra stage in each game to provide a harder challenge to those who completed the game.
This style is consistent for 10 games in the series. 3 of the other games are fighter based games, 5 or variations of bullet hell games, and 1 is a weird bullet hell/breakout game that can be excused by being the first in the series.
As stated earlier, ZUN does most of the material by himself. This includes all aspects of the games, with the exception of the fighting games.
The Books/Manga
In addition to the main game series, there are print works that go with the series as well. This consists of the manga and print works described above. The manga usually depicts various stories focused on the mundane places of the setting. While the manga can range from average to decent, many can be read without previous knowledge of other parts of the series.
The written works, by contrast, require knowledge of the games and the back stories to understand. Most of the written works are character guides along with snippets of story around said characters. All current works can be found translating in the Touhou wiki, so if you are interested, just go there.
Setting/Characters
Now, with little Justification, I would like to describe the setting here. The Touhou universe takes place in Gensoyoko, a place that is located in a different dimension compared to the real world. In this place, myths from various (mostly Japanese) legends live. This wide, open setting contributes to the REAL reason why this series has its reputation.
Another thing leading towards its relative popularity is its characters. Touhou contains well over 100 characters, each with a distinctive appearance, personality, and power. Most of these characters are bosses in the games.
Fanbase (i.e. the real reason this series is more known)
Now, if you have been paying attention (first off, I'm sorry), you would have noticed that this franchise offers a unique universe, loads of side characters that have adventures not mentioned in the main series, and a setting that is different yet related. This results in a lot of fan works as a result (I personally call this the Harry Potter fan fiction equation).
Now, fan works are nothing new to any franchise. But, for me, what separates this series from the rest is its extremely PRODUCTIVE fan works. Ranging from music remixes to videos to fan games based off an indie game, Touhou's extreme fans are literally carrying half of its popularity towards its audience.
Foreign Market (i.e. why I haven't heard of this series)
Now, you are probably wondering "This sounds popular, why haven't I heard of it if its fanbase is apparently large?" Well, first I'd be wondering how you are reading my mind and looking for the nearest tinfoil hat, but then I'd explain that this series is popular in Japan. Now, for a Japanese only indie game franchise, it is more popular than you would expect it. However, it is still and probably be as well known in foreign markets compared to Japan.

Fourukaa, aka 8 other names -Earl Zolubu’s 3rd  sword-
*Earl's 3rd and most recent sword= Fourukaa: The straight, double-edged katana sword that was supposed to be the 13th Saijo O Wazamono, but got affected with an curse to obtain an 'outsider' garuda demon spirit (Legendary bird, or bird-like being, from Hindu/Buddhist/Jain myth). With 9 names, changing from one to the other as the views on this sword changed over time, from before the curse, the time of maybe the katana going a bit beyond the line of acceptable swords, during the sudden 'possession' of the sword, to long after it was not to be make the number of the Saijo O Wazamono grade swords from 12 to 13. Aoi Mizu no Yamanoha ("Blue Water Mountain Edge")/Hiya Ame ni sono Shisha no Kuni, or Shisha, for short ("Cold Rain in the Land of the Dead")/Shouhisha Kuro Katsuryoku ("Consumed By Black Vigor")/Warui Hana, or Warui Ringo ("Bad Blossom", or "Bad Apple")/Namae wa Tsuke Rarenai Ken ("The Sword That Shall Not Be Named")/Kuro Taaru No Sebun Chakura no Hasu ("Black Tar of the Seven Chakra Lotuses")/Hi to Taiyou ("Fire And Sun")/Garuuda (Garuda)/Fourukaa ("Forcalor", an water/air fallen angel-demon of Hell, or "Fall Mother") How Earl earned this extremely high grade, but cursed sword: Back in 2038, 8 years ago from 2046, During his trek to get back home after events that got Earl & one of his best friends, Meruem, to escape the prison, Impel Down, in Bagklock Earth's (One Piece) equator, on one of the last islands on that journey, Wano Kui, things went nutty mcgee when Earl found a small, small 'lake', that had an air-tight wooden coffin for an cursed sword, Fourukaa, one of 9 names, that was once considered to become the 13th out of the Saijo O Wazamono grade swords, and buried by those of the blue snow tipped mountain-dwelling Hikui Tomo Senotakai/Hi-tomo-takai ("Short & Tall") clan. Feeling that such a sword, even if cursed, shouldn't really go to waste, buried underwater, it wouldn't have to bother future generations of Wano, if it is not on Wano soil anymore, & that he can tame the demon inside the katana blade, Earl went to the clan to ask if he can earn the sword after a duel, which he expected to meet resistance on the idea to even consider opening the coffin. But, after much convincing, on one condition, Earl would have Fourukaa in his possession, as a swordsman, after attempting to defeat Yama-inshou of the Midori Oni Yuki (Earth Elemental Sword Style), with 2 swords, one blade is an odachi and the other is an wakizashi, who is the strongest and fastest, despite his 4'0" height, in combat on top of Mt. Aoi Yuki, in front of the graves of the samurai who choose to be buried under the tip of the mountain, under the blue snow. It was a grueling, blood-shedding duel between Earl and Yama-inshou, with more and more nobles walking to the short, snowy mountain, where Earl had to uncap his first three power caps to be on equal ground, before delivering one final blunt strike, both hands on the blade, the baskethilt to Yama-inshou's forehead like an hammer, and knocking him out, fair and square. After that, after earning Fourukaa by the lakeside, Zolubu had to watch , with an expression of grimace and yet, acceptance, that Yama' would be willingly to accept his dishonor and smiles at Earl for being a true warrior, even as an outsider. Yet another face and name Earl would never forget. From there, after the other events in Wano Kui, 8 years later, Earl had the sword with the 'demonic problem bird', Fourukaa, ever since, hanging beneath Lanza, and managed to get a grip on the sword's curse mostly. Entire katana length: 42 inches long, -That is said that every single part of this 'unorthodox' katana to have been soaked with crushed lotus flower juice, mixed with juices of 7 different crushed foods; red Daikon ("Radish"), Unshu Mikan ("Citrus/orange"), yellow-colored Gohan ("Rice"), Tsukemono ("Cabbage"), Ao Ringo ("Blue Apple"), Budou ("Grapes"), & Ierouseji ("Yellow Sage"), symbolizing the 7 Chakras, the blood of an dying asura, and the blood of an buddha at an almost eternal slumber, while it was forged and put together for religious purposes, which makes an very exquisite smell, even mixed in with the blood of enemies and duel opponents. Blade length: 28.0 inches long. Originally a normal blue-gray copper/steel alloy blade, before the Garuda's curse changed it to mostly a vantablack blade, with dark copper blue crow feather hardening line/hamon design on the blade itself. Weight: 43 pounds (43/Shizan in Japanese can literally mean "Stillbirth", which is a part of a superstition that room 43 in the maternity section of a hospital should be avoided). No sori/curvature at all. Width of the base: 4 inches wide. Width of the Yokote (Line between the tip and the rest of the blade's 'sheet'): 37mm. Thickness of the base: 2500 mm/2.5 inches. Thickness of the rest of the blade: 2000 mm/2.0 inches. Length of the Nakago (Tang of the sword): 23.36 cm/9.2 inches. Tsuba width: 14 inches by 10 inches. The dark brownish green Habaki design is of an snorting, angry horse, with an fiery bright orange mane, clamping to the base of the blade with its mouth, the rest coming out of its mouth to throat. The Tsuba (Guard) design is shaped like an mountain, with a blue 'peak', or the bottom of the Habuki, with the carvings of 2 grinning baboon monkeys, with purple fur, dark pink skin, & long tails, making the rest of the tsuba. The Fuchi (Collar) design is of an grey & orange whale in red (Bagklock) sea water, covered in the crater-riddled rock of the 3 (Bagklock) moons, with an big mouth that is shaped like an hole, with a black 'abyss'. The menuki (Tsuka ornament) design is a brownish-green dragon with 14 tendril-like tongues and 2 cyclops-like eyes. 7 'sealing' Mekugis (Handle pins). Squared Tsuka (Handle) length: 14.0 inches. The Bloodgood maple wood tsuka is scarlet red in color and the pink Same-kawa (Wrapping), in an heart-shaped snake scale pattern, makes the pattern of an silhouette of a buck deer's head. The Shitodome ('Before-pommel' if you will) & Kashira (Pommel) design is of a blackish crow, with a purple hue, that has six straight wings, three heads, and three legs, the 2 (Bagklock) suns behind it, casting its shadow, with the end of the Kashira shaped like an wolf's head, that looks similar to the ruler of Area 2 of the Gourmet World, one of the 8 Kings, "Wolf King" Guiness. The cobalt saya's design (Scabbard), made out of reinforced cherry blossom tree wood, is that the koiguchi (Saya's 'mouth') is shaped differently than other katanas, made out of an red oni/ogre's canine tooth, while it is shaped like an grinning red oni (Similar in looks to Toriko's Red Gourmet Devil), along with the kojiri, or the end of the saya, being made out of a blue oni's canine tooth, while it is shaped like a grinning blue oni (Similar in looks to Toriko's blue Gourmet Devil). The right side of the saya is decorated with the design of the ten heads of the Ramayana asura villain, Ravana (Ravu~aana in Japanese), expect with one being an skull, with tiger-like canines, in the far, far bottom of the saya, while the other side has the different colored lotus flowers representing the 7 Chakras and at the ends of the saya, cut by the coil, are the green-haired, pale skinned Buddha, with eyes barely open, and an blue skinned, black haired Asura. & The sageo (Cord) is light gray in color. The nature of this sword's curse is to change much of the sword to vantablack, thus having 99.965% of light be absorbed, not reflected, *directly* becomes linked to one's 7 Chakras, add watery effects to the very air from each movement, like swinging & thrusting, while having visible whirling, & waving, air around the blade, REALLY wants to shed blood, and to absorb both the 'light' of its owner's opponent's soul and their shadow when slain, little by little with each successful strike, until just 1.4% of the soul & shadow remains. Theme song: "Bad Apple!!", an extremely famous Touhou arcade game song.
Earl Zolubu on Four: [“Fourukaa is a problem demon bird to deal with at times. But, I can use it enough to keep it right on the path of my thrusts and swings. It is a cursed honor, maybe. But, it is a honor to wield such a sword like this indeed.”]

A phantom based around New Orleans. Specifically, their gates of the dead. Many old cemeteries in New Orleans will have 3 gates instead of 1– one big one and 2 often locked ones on the side. This results from a superstition that arose to popularity around their yellow fever outbreaks, where the dead would be brought en más through the large gate. People would refuse to enter or follow the coffin through, believing passing through the large gate was an invitation to be followed by vengeful and wandering spirits. So the side gates were built for the living, 2 on each side, but some could have up to 5 gates total on a single side.
Nowadays, the superstition has waned but you will still see these gates, now locked— all except for 2 days. All Saints’ Day and all souls day.
The names on the gate are of 2 mass graves/hospitals in New Orleans, now both abandoned. Charity was for unclaimed or unidentified dead, but during the yellow fever epidemic, poor people would go and Unclaim their dead so they could be buried. The charity cemetery is now a burial place for unclaimed yellow fever victims, those donated to science, and 100 unidentified Katrina victims left in a warehouse until 2015.
Mercy is a name of both a hospital and cemetery, in this case being in reference to “Gates of mercy cemetery” the first Jewish cemetery in the city and one of the oldest still standing. Mercy hospital was a hospice center closed after Katrina, where clean up crews found over 40 bodies wrapped laying in their beds, having been euthanized during rescue efforts.
New Orleans is a very interesting city both in history and mythology and I really hope to visit again!! Loved it!

Chugga chugga on the phantom train!
I’ve written a bunch for her under the cut
Came up with some stuff for her:
- Unnamed, just the conductor or engine 143. In life, was killed in a train crash.
- Species: Train Phantom (I imagine she is both the apparition and the train. Maybe like a centaur.
- Ability: ability to conduct to phantom railway
- Theme: 恩知らずな生き物の刈り取り~Engine 143 (reaping the ungrateful living ~engine 143)
Spell card names:
- All aboard!!
- に帰る きさらぎ駅 (return to Kisaragi Station)
- トロッコのジレンマ (the trolley dilemma)
- L&Nはどこへ行ったのだろう? (where has the L&N gone?)
Inspired by the Folksong “Engine 143”
Basically, a train conductor got in a crash in the 1800s, which left him mangled but still alive if only for a moment. He’s inseparable from the train, like litterally. The engine is destroyed as well, and they both spiritually become one— The conductor
It’s kinda like Youmus two bodies, but they share a conscious mind and cannot be apart. The conductor will arrive at abandoned or empty stations at random times, boarding whoever gets on— live or dead, and takes them pretty much anywhere— including other worlds. She has little regard for living people and will straight turn a cow into fine paste
Other stuff:
- Train does need rails it just goes wherever. Engine is modeled after a 1858 Boston model.
- Conductor talks fast and almost gibberish at times. Seems to speak every language but doesn’t really know them, and at times will throw words in order with no meaning
- eye that’s the trains light moves with the conductors eyes
- will straight run people over
- sort of the result of a man dying for the engine he loved, after being mangled and crushed they became one in death, inseparable.

A touhou style myth— less specifically a monster and more surrounding the myths of Witches in Serbia. Most uniquely in my eyes, Witches souls can leave their body in the form of a butterfly or moth, to spy on villagers. While in this state, their bodies are unprotected and dormant. If you lay them down, their soul cannot return and they’ll be stuck as an insect.

Touhou style myths!
The Korpokurr is a fae from Ainu mythology (indigenous Northern Japanese, the one of the 2 ethnicities under Japanese, the other and majority being the Han) who were said to be the FIRST inhabitants of the Ainu lands. They were tiny tiny little creatures, who lived and often hid themselves under Butterbur leaves. They were masters of fishing, and absolutely hated being seen. korpokurr would maintain trade with the Ainu people, until a man captured one— which made them so mad they disappeared forever.

First touhou style myth I’ve posted to tumblr. I’m used to only showing them on Reddit lol.
The Kuma lisa is a fox trickster from Slavic lore. She’s often shown to be driven by envy, in many tales opposing an honest wolf. One time she tricked a little hedgehog into thinking she was sick so it would lead her to a rabbit to “heal her” and she just fucking ate it like wtf girl.
This one specifically is Bulgarian based! I imagine she would not get along with any of foxes, or rabbits… or birds… or wolves. Imma be real no one likes her ass.
