Touring Australia with a 2 year old (who turned 3)

We’ve been traveling around Australia through 2016/17 with our strong-willed and hilarious daughter who started off as a twonager and turned three during our trip and I thought I should share some of our finds with you all out there in the internet who may be considering doing the same thing.

The first thing I’d say is that we’d recommend it.  We’ve had a ball exploring this excellent country and have had so many occasions where we’ve turned to each other and said “can you believe this amazing place?!”

We’ve spent between 4 and 10 weeks in each place we’ve visited and so have had time to uncover some gems.  I’ve been working on a musical so mostly work evenings and weekends and my excellent and supportive husband has been taking care of Daddy Day Care.  We value our coffee and food and our daughter is obsessed with dinosaurs so this has probably led our choices of activities a bit!

I’ll do a separate post for each place but here are some general tips:

Get a zoo membership.  Whichever state you start in, sign up to the zoo there and you’ll get free entry to all the other zoos as well as discounts on food.  The zoo is always a winner of a day out and we haven’t been to a dud yet!

Libraries are awesome. Libraries have lots of free programs and activities and will let you sign up with a temporary membership which will let you take home books and DVDs straight away.  These are gold for breaking up the monotony of the small number of toys that were invited on the journey.

Pack your own knives.  I know that sounds lame but you’ll be chopping a lot of carrot sticks not to mention throwing together heaps of meals in strange kitchens and there is nothing more frustrating than not being able to chop properly. 

Stay tuned for individual destinations - we’ve spent time in Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Adelaide and Perth.  And we’re planning trips to Tokyo and the South of Italy in 2017 - woohoo!
