"The man who came to know many cities"
Did you know there is a local tradition regarding Odysseus in which the king of Ithaca was the founder of Lisbon/Lisboa the capital of Portugal 🇵🇹?
This information was brought to me by my dearest friend @artsofmetamoor (go and check her awesome art!)
Tumblr media
If you are a fan of Iliad and the Odyssey check out this amazing design of a high fantasy armor inspired by Mycenaean designs and the description of Odysseus's helmet!
So the myth goes as follows;
At some point during his wandering about (and funny story how I cannot find a definitive answer if that happened during the events of Odyssey or if it happened during the redemption journey which Odysseus had to take after and if the latter is true it would be hilarious if Poseidon decided to be petty af and decided to throw one last storm to Odysseus sending him to yet another detour for no reason 🤣🤣🤣🤣)
Anyways during one of these wanderings Odysseus found himself to Portugal to the area of the current city of Lisbon. He and his men became enamored by the beauty of the location and impressed by the fertility of land and the strategic position, Odysseus decided it would be a good spot to set a new city; spreading the culture to the area and at the same time create a good and strategic spot
However as it happens to Greek mythology in general and to Odysseus in particular, the area was inhabited by a beautiful goddess. The goddess was half human and had a serpentine tail. And, surprise surprise, she falls in love with Odysseus
(I swear to God this guy is a goddess magnet 🤣🤣🤣🤣 like...dude! 🤣👍)
The goddess wanted to make Odysseus stay with her and become her husband. Odysseus of course was eager to return home to his wife (or extra careful because he learnt his lesson with beautiful goddesses "asking" for him to stay! 😅😆) he decided to leave another man in his place (that guy must have been either the luckiest guy in the world or the most unlucky take your pick hahahaha)
When the goddess discovered the substitution she became furious and tried to catch the fleeting ship with her tail. When she filed to do so, she threw herself in the sea and died of sorrow for her beloved one run away
(Goddammit Odysseus the Heartbreaker! 😂😂)
From her huge body were created the seven hills of Lisbon (and I assume the lucky or unlucky guy Odysseus substituted himself with was left with a nice new city all by himself lol 😆)
Yet another unknown story regarding mythology that would be nice to be heard more! Hehehe see? This dude just went to yet another place hahahahaha 😂 🤣 😆

Early morning by the Sabor river.
The main focus of my end of year photo trips to Trás-Os-Montes throughout the years has been the Winter Solstice traditions, but since day one I was never able to ignore these cold winter mornings.

🇵🇹 Portugal - iolanda - "Grito"
A promising singer and songwriter, iolanda released her debut EP 'Cura' in March 2023.
Born in São Pedro de Cova Gala, in Figueira da Foz, the artist moved to Lisbon at the age of 17, but already at 14 she took her first steps in writing.
Not long afterwards, she started performing in bars and national talent competitions as an even greater gateway into music. Later, she moved to the UK, where she studied Songwriting at BIMM, University of Sussex.
In iolanda’s music, we hear pop and R&B, without the artist ever compromising on her traditional Portuguese and Iberian roots.

🇦🇲 Jako by Ladaniva - fun! makes me wanna dance! love the Balkan folk elements in the instrumentals. v happy they made it to grand finals.
🇦🇹 We Will Rave by Kaleen - in my top five. would bet my bottom dollar every club in europe will be blasting this all summer.
🇭🇷 Rim Tim Tagi Dim by Baby Lasanga - its fine. not sure how it was the projected winner. like its not a bad song, its just not the best of the bunch.

🇪🇪 (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi by 5miinust x Puuluup - not a huge fan but i see the appeal. also remind me to never learn Estonian.
🇫🇮 No Rules! by Windows95Man - didn’t stand out to me but it might be bc i know approximately 15 white boys who make music exactly like this (no shade i promise)
🇫🇷 Mon Amour by Slimane - gonna out myself as someone who had a French pop phase and say this is a solid B- by my standards. France, send Amir Haddad in 2025.
🇬🇪 Firefighter by Nutsa Buzaladze - another top five pick. powerful, defiant, infectious.

🇬🇷 ZARI by Marina Satti - had a v good time with this one. really love the blend of musical traditions that come through.
🇮🇪 Doomsday Blue by Bambie Thug - i wanted to like this song. i really did. but besides it not being my sound, it also just kind of falls flat technically? idk, its just. not that good.
🇮🇱 Hurricane by Eden Golan - powerful vocals, heart wrenching performance. regardless of the results, i desperately need a version with the original lyrics.

Since the Grand Final is almost here - the signs as this year’s Eurovision entries!
(as always, please don’t take this too seriously, this is just me having fun)
Aries - Queen of Kings 🇳🇴
She’s a warrior, she’s fearless, she’s unstoppable, she has that power that only a Mars-ruled fire sign can have. “A firestone forged in flames” is a great way to describe Aries!
Taurus - Tattoo 🇸🇪
The lyrics are very Pisces-y, but there’s something in the music that won’t let me give this one Pisces. Still— romance is a good topic for a Venus-ruled sign. The song itself is familiar, it’s sung by a former winner, it’s a very safe choice, and Taurus likes familiar, it likes to feel safe, it’s a fixed sign that knows what it likes and sees no need to change it. It worked before, it’s gonna work again.
Gemini - Who the hell is Edgar? 🇦🇹
It’s fun, it’s quirky, AND it’s about writing - quintessential Gemini. No need for further explanation.
Cancer - Duje 🇦🇱
An entire family is singing together, about the importance of family. You can hardly find a more Cancer-y song. The ethnic vibes fit too, feel quite nostalgic.
Leo - Cha cha cha 🇫🇮
It would’ve been easy to give Leo a dramatic ballad, but that’s not all Leo is - they’re the Sun, bright and the centre of attention, but also bringing light and life to everything around them. And Cha cha cha does that, it’s lively and energetic and memorable, it draws people’s attention and it’s fun, unique, everyone likes it.
Virgo - My Sister’s Crown 🇨🇿
Mostly because of the braids. A very Virgo-y hairstyle. But the message of solidarity and support fits Virgo too, they’re the kind of people who help and uplift others.
Libra - Évidemment 🇫🇷
At first I wanted to give this one to Taurus - largely because it’s so… French, and so is Taurus, aesthetics-wise - but the lyrics didn’t quite fit. Taurus is pure beauty and pleasure, Libra is more balanced - and this song is both about beauty and pain. She’s looking for love, yet cannot find it, she’s becoming disillusioned with the beautiful promises she’s heard. And Libra is ruled by Venus, true, but it’s also where Saturn is exalted. I feel like this song is a good combination of Venus and Saturn. Especially “dans mon jardin d’enfer poussent des fleurs” - love that line!
Scorpio - Ai Coração 🇵🇹
I didn’t want to give Scorpio the stereotypical edgy song (so instead I went with the one about going mad from heartbreak…)
It’s about strong emotions you just cannot move on from, feelings so intense they entirely consume you. Very fixed water. And it’s done in a pretty energetic, passionate way - very Martian.
(Plus, there’s a lot of red)
Sagittarius - Carpe Diem 🇸🇮
It’s just a very Sagittarean sentiment. I don’t know what else to say. It fits.
Capricorn - Heart of Steel 🇺🇦
Yeah, largely because of the title. But also: “life is just a game and I’m playing for the win” “світ палає а ти дій” - the combination of cynicism and single-minded determination is very Capricornian.
Aquarius - Mama ŠČ! 🇭🇷
It’s different. It’s avant-garde. You either love it (correct) or hate it (you’re wrong). It rejects artistic norms. Many people write it off as nonsensical, just because it’s too unfamiliar, too extreme, too far out of their comfort zone, but it’s actually very well thought-out, with layers of symbolism.
Pisces - Soarele şi Luna 🇲🇩
It may not sound Pisces-y - a soft ballad might fit the aesthetic more - but everything but the sound is so quintessentially Pisces. The song being about love as magical as in the folk tales, a bit otherworldly, a bit ethereal. The sense of oneness with nature we get both from the lyrics and the performance. The combination of modern and traditional, making the song, and the love it speaks of, feel timeless and eternal.
(Also, I’m a Pisces Venus and I love this song)

TBH, I don’t see Ruben settling with a random influencer, he’ll probably marry a nice Portuguese girl from a traditional family when it comes the time to settle down. He’ll want his kids to speak his own language and grow up with strong Portuguese roots.
