Long time no updates! B had at least four weeks off after she moved back home due to wonderful New England weather. She’s been in light work the last three weeks while I was barn sitting and working full time. Despite the lack of work, she’s feeling really good and pretty strong. I’ve been trying to focus on my position a lot which is always the key to our success and we’ve been mixing it up a lot. We’ve been doing lots of polework, hacking in the jump saddle, and even popped through a little cavaletti bounce the other week. My goal is to try to work her out of the ring as much as I’m able to and just keep mixing things up. Her canter work has been amazing! Good balance, energy, and really starting to develop the jump and self carriage. She’s obedient to the walk canter walk transitions and just really impressing me with her willingness. I also feel really great in the canter position wise. She does lose the outside shoulder/inside bend over the poles tracking right but I think she’s just over bending the neck too much and I’m losing the left shoulder. Trot needs work but significantly improved. I’m learning to get our argument over with quickly about the contact/in front of the leg thing and not backing down when she tries to get me to back off. The other day we did a ton of trot halt trot transitions until she was light in the hand and prompt off the leg. I could really feel that she was bending and sitting on her hind legs - a feeling I usually only get in lessons - which made me realize I need to be more demanding and get that quality trot earlier so I can work her for shorter periods with quality trot work versus long periods with her crappy on the forehand trot. Today when I tried the same thing she got better (obedience wise) but I didn’t get the really good hind leg feeling like I did before. After a walk break we played with shoulder in tracking left and sorted out some obedience/straightness issues there where she wasn’t honestly off the inside leg or allowing me to bring the shoulder in off the outside rein. We added in 10 m circles and a little counter flexion until she understood what I wanted, then played with lots of transitions in and out of shoulder in and that helped me get the nicely engaged hind leg feeling back again. Shoulder in right was much easier for her. We did a little more canter each way then a stretchy canter over the poles and some stretchy trot all while maintaining the nice balance and bend of the hind legs. My trainer is back from vacation and she saw the end of our ride and thought she looked much stronger and much more forward. Plan is to trailer out for a hack tomorrow and maybe take a lesson Monday.

I worked out with my trainer for the first time today. I’m going to be honest, it sucked so hard. She kicked my ass. Literally, my ass HURTS. Lol I’m stoked though. I can’t wait to see what’s to come. I’m feeling pretty great about all of this.

Super big #shoutout to my #covid19 exclusive training partner for the last 6 months, @trcarro39 It takes a lot of #character to keep it up with a great attitude like @trcarro39 has had every night without having other white belts to beat up on every now and then 😂. And for me, I think it really helped my technique to have a partner that I could try things on and have a second to think about what I'm doing rather than just trying to survive like I tend to do with upper belts. I really enjoy the mentoring aspect of it too. Exploiting the holes in his game and then helping him figure out how he can improve, watching him grow and get better, make microadjustments 😂 and even submit me sometimes... #priceless 🤩 #bjjlife #roll4life #bjj #jiujitsu #trainingjournal #class670 #gjj #savannah #purplebelt #whitebelt #microadjustments #exclusive (at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Savannah) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMpmt-GJ1qk/?igshid=i3w9x20f7369

Tips on Being a great Mentor
Tumblr media
As a mentor, you won’t just offer up your professional advice. You’ll be taking on the role of teacher, coach, counselor, and friend, which is a big responsibility. And that means getting to know enough about your mentee to identify where to push the person to take risks and to aim higher in his or her professional and personal life. Mentorship is all about helping someone seek out the opportunities necessary to grow and excel. Here are some insight on how to be a great mentor.
Approach each Mentorship Differently
While you can do your best to categorize a mentor/mentee relationship, everyone is unique. When you first start out, it's important to take the time to assess your own style and readiness and think about what kind of commitment you can and want to make. Source: blog.hubspot
Build the Relationship
If mentoring sessions occur during lunch or after work, try to balance sharing work practices with building the relationship. Most mentoring programs are set up for an established period, be it a month or a year. However, this is a colleague and down the line, after the mentoring relationship ends, you also have a partner. Given the way things are constantly changing in the professional world, that’s an asset that cannot be undervalued. Leave time to make a friend, not just check the boxes for the mentoring task. Source: topresume
Establish Expectations and Ground Rules
When first introduced to the mentee, make them comfortable by explaining your role. Answer any questions they may have about the mentoring process. Point out what you expect of them (e.g. to come prepared with problems to resolve or inquiries to discuss; to show up on time; to treat this as a professional and respectful relationship, etc.). Explain what you’re prepared to do for them: coach, teach, and open relevant doors. Source: monster
Listen
We all have our views on the world and we all have a good idea of what does and doesn’t work in our fields of interest.  The Mentor/Mentee relationship is a symbiotic one where it’s not meant to be a completely one-way discussion – “here do this, keep doing this, don’t do what you were going to do”. The goal of the relationship is for the Mentee to learn and grow. To do this, you must train yourself to listen to their problems and challenges and suggest courses of action that don’t give them the immediate answer they so insistently desire. Your Mentee cannot learn and grow if you are telling them exactly what to do and never giving them a chance to fail. Listening to your Mentee’s struggles can be incredibly hard to do because even though they think they know what the problem is, it’s up to you to tell them what it really is. Source: lifehack
Share Your Mistakes
It’s fine to let others learn from their own mistakes but being able to share yours with your mentee is going to help them learn invaluable lessons. There is a good chance that they will be faced with many of the same challenges that you were, so giving them examples to relate back to will be very helpful. Source: insala
Keep moving forward
Ahead of each meeting, ask your mentee to let you know what they want to discuss. And after your meeting, ask them to email you with any learning and action points. This can help you avoid getting stuck on the same issues or covering the same ground. Source: charitycomms
Celebrate Progress
Many mentees are self-conscious about how their new practices are reflecting on them. Help them see the positive changes they are achieving through mentoring—and help them embrace their successes! Try ending your mentoring conversations by recapping your mentee’s accomplishments. Source: trainingjournal
Demonstrates a Positive Attitude and Acts as a Positive Role Model
A good mentor exhibits the personal attributes it takes to be successful in the field. By showing the mentee what it takes to be productive and successful, they are demonstrating the specific behaviors and actions required to succeed in the field. Remember, the positive attitude must go both ways. It’s important that you always treat your mentor with the utmost professionalism. Source: thebalancecareers
Confidentiality
Understand that a mentor-mentee relationship is highly personal, and trust is a key pillar of that relationship. Nothing erodes trust quicker than breaching confidentiality. Source: mentorselector
Hold the mentee Responsible and Accountable
Encourage the mentee to generate their own solutions and make it clear that they must accept full responsibility for their personal choices. Good people won’t want it to work any other way. Most people learn best from making mistakes, so you must let them fail sometimes. Source: mentor
Have great patience
In a mentoring relationship, the importance of patience as a virtue cannot be emphasized enough. Just like any other relationship, there will be moments of frustration, annoyance, miscommunication and lack of understanding. Great mentors will tide over momentary periods of frustration by exercising patience. Equally, the same is expected from the mentee to keep the relationship effective and fruitful. Source: knowledge

Back to Basics: 20 m Circles
Probably my last ride on Bella tonight before she moves back home on Sunday. Unfortunately the temperature is going back down into single digits this weekend, and it will be another week before things warm up again. Luckily, she was really good albeit mostly because I wasn’t riding like shit! Yesterday and today I set up a 20 m circle with cones and practiced our straightness, transitions, and tempo. Overall it’s a fantastic exercise that makes me ride her whole body while making her straighter and fixing my own weird position problems. The biggest things I worked out were:
if she is overbending her neck, it really means that I’m losing the outside shoulder
lots of inside leg to move the rib cage out and to send her forward into the outside rein
outside rein keeps the head and neck straight and the outside shoulder in line
once she is off the inside leg and straighter through the outside shoulder, she tends to get heavy in the outside rein. then I need to counterflex her a little and half halt to get the outside hind leg to catch up
gathering one hind leg up at a time
ride her forward -- need to work on getting her in front of my leg still
keep the right leg on all the time whether it’s the inside leg or a supporting outside leg
slowly stretch her out on the right side. as long as she maintains the stretch, straightness, and contact she can go all the way out nose to the ground
By the end of the ride, she had her hind legs under her in both directions and she was light but steady in the bridle. She was a little behind the leg still, but using her body well so I’ll pick my battles still for now. Gathering up the outside hind leg in trot and canter was a huge deal breaker for getting her nice in the bridle and bending the joints of her hind legs. My position is also getting much better from being forced to ride correctly -- imagine that...
I have to remember how productive this ride was today for so many reasons. While going back and working on or perfecting the basics may seem like a step back, it’s really only making things easier and better. Rides like this, in fact, are SO much more productive than spending the whole time fighting with her and trying to get more advanced work that’s lacking in quality. While we kept our work today either long and low or training level frame, we were able to make huge strides in her straightness issues and basic obedience. Honestly, these are still things that need perfecting and that we struggle with, so until she is able to do this stuff easily the more advanced work will always suffer. It’s much more beneficial for us to always strengthen these basics and then slowly work our way up. That way when we do lose quality in the higher work, we can easily reestablish our basics and try again rather than having the basics themselves be an argument.
