Transformers Reveal The Shield Solar Storm Grappel (2011)

Currently filming B-roll for a future video on Earthrise Grapple and Hoist, and along the way I found myself rediscovering a previous toy of Graps that's now a full decade old. Solar Storm "Grappel", as he was then known for trademark reasons, looks a world away from anything seen in current Transformer design in robot mode. The crane-on-the-arm is definitely cumbersome. All Grappels apparently have loose joints (very noticable on the legs on mine) and according to the Wiki some have loose plastic tags dangling off parts of the toy as well, although I can't say I've noticed that on mine. Despite having all these things working against him, he still has a sort of boxy charm.

The crane truck mode, on the other hand, is a big, beautiful chunk of cheddar, the kind of toy where if I'd owned this when I was five or six I'd have been able to have hours of fun. Even now, being considerably older, I can still appreciate the Tonka-truck-meets-TF vibe Grapple has going here.

Grapple’s part of the first wave of the Earthrise series.

Vehicle mode:

Grapple is an orange and black crane. Thank you and good night!

I mean it looks like G1 Grapple, it’s got the cab section, the half dome lights, the silver thingies on the side, the crane boom, I think it looks good.

One improvement over his G1 counterpart is that crane boom can swivel now, which is nice, though I will say that the boom itself is smaller than I would like.

The hook is meant to hang down in front of the cab, but for this toy once you collapse the boom down becomes noticeably too short. I suppose this Hasbro’s way of cost cutting, but this is actually the beginning of the problem.

Still, the crane does have, I think five 5mm ports for weapons storage and accessories, and even a clever one place above the hook so that Grapple can...well, a grapple claw (which was used once in the cartoon) and that’s pretty neat. I can dig.

All in all this is serviceable vehicle mode.

However once you compare the Earthrise version to 2011′s Solarstorm Grappel he is just really small...Please keep in mind these are BOTH voyager class figures, and just look at that size difference.

Transformation:

Transformation is a pretty simple affair with one issue. At the rear of the crane where the robot head assemble connects to the robot feet, the attachment is made by two 5mm pegs, and apparently these are likely to break if you’re not careful with them. Please keep that in mind during transformation.

Robot Mode:

As far as robot mode goes this is a really nice Grapple!

Again, what else can I say about it; it’s almost as if this toy jumped right out of the ‘The Transformers’ cartoon. His robot mode is solid, he poses well, I love the head sculpt, and i really like it!

Accessories:

Grapple comes with three accessories, a black laser gun, a silver nozzle (usually a wrist mounted weapon seen in the cartoon), and a literal grapple claw. Lastly both the gun and the nozzle can hold a blast effect as well.

Any one of these items can be plugged into any one of these 5mm ports, including the fists can swivel into the arms to reveal two wrist mounted 5mm ports for the grapple claw, and the silver nozzle. I really like this touch.

Final Thoughts:

Earthrise Grapple is a really fun figure, he looks great, but has a really underwhelming vehicle mode

I’m not going to lie I am torn about this one.

Earthrise Grapple has a really good robot mode, but as I mentioned not a fan of the crane mode, while Solarstorm Grappel (seriously Hasbro...what?) on the other hand has a great, beefy vehicle mode, but that robot mode is just alright...

If you already own the Reveal The Shield toy of...Solarstorm Grappel...then it might be okay to pass on the Earthrise version, if you’re not an absolute completionist that is.

And that’s all I got to say about that.

Transformers Earthrise Grappel!  I wonder if it uses Optimus engineering? It looks awesome though - g’bye Solar Storm Grappel?
