This Day-Two 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 Has Never Strayed From Its Shenandoah Valley Home

You never forget your first car, and if you’ve grown up in or around the car hobby, recollections of your first car remain especially vivid. That’s certainly true for Mark Prunesti. Although he has had the privilege of buying and restoring other cars, his first ride, a stunning, 396-motivated 1969 Chevelle he got his sophomore year in high school, occupies a permanent section of his brain—and his heart. For years, Mark and his Chevelle were tied together in a bond that can only occur between man and machine. However, like many similar stories forged out on the streets, it would not last forever. The Chevy was sold a few years later due to unforeseen circumstances.

Old-school never looked so good. A built L78, Cragars, and big rear meats give this car instant street cred.

Decades later, Mark was bitten by the bug to once again own a 1969 Chevelle, even though he already had a few other projects lined up in the shop. In 2014, a Craigslist ad grabbed his attention. It was plain and simple, without much description, and included very few pictures: “1969 Chevelle SS396. Red. Stored since 1978. Doesn’t run.”

This Chevelle was born with the 375hp L78 version of the 396. The engine in the car now, built using a replacement block, was missing when Mark Prunesti bought the car. He later went back to the previous owner’s property and extracted the mill.

The ad was less than 24 hours old, but Mark knew he needed to act fast. He called the number and learned the car was stored about three hours away from him. The Chevelle was being sold by a third party who was helping out an ill neighbor. The man who placed the ad really didn’t know much about the car. Mark was told that he was third on the list to see it, which didn’t sit well with him at all. He really wanted the first chance at this particular Chevy. He kept the man on the phone, questioning him on the particulars of the car. That was his plan. He felt his only way to the top of the line was to ask as many questions about the car’s vital parts as possible until the seller either hung up or moved him to the front of the line. Mark’s steadfastness paid off, as the man asked him to come take a look at it for himself. He was now number one on the list.

The engine Mark found was topped with L89 aluminum heads, a rare option that year. There is no paperwork to verify that these heads were installed at the factory.

Mark hit the ground running, keen on finding a top-tier factory-bred Chevelle. He didn’t want just any Chevy A-body. He was definitely looking for a big-block car, built with some of the top “needed necessities” that GM had to offer. He hoped this was a ride that would check off most of the boxes on his must-have list.

The Chevelle was located in Waynesboro, Virginia, a bustling town nestled deep in the Shenandoah Valley. When Mark first laid eyes on the car, he was quite pleased with what he saw. It was in much better shape than he imagined, with few body issues to speak of. It was in amazing shape for a car that had been off the road for nearly 40 years.

Just seeing that red-skinned Chevy propelled him back to his youth and the moment he first gazed upon his beloved high school Chevelle. However, one big piece of the puzzle was missing: The powerplant was nowhere to be found. It was an issue, but not a deal breaker. Interestingly enough, this car showed 48,000 miles on the odometer, the same number of miles that were on Mark’s first Chevelle when he bought it. Coincidence? A sign from above?

The bench seat and four-speed shifter combo in this Chevelle let you know that it was built to hit the streets with a vengeance!

Many purists would have walked away from this car, but not Mark. After he inspected the car thoroughly, he knew that this Chevelle was not something to pass up. He jumped right on it and brought the car back to his garage.

Someone’s Hot Rod

The Garnet Red 1969 Chevelle SS was obviously someone’s hot rod back in the day, as it showed telltale signs of being a built-up street ride. It had period Cragars at the corners, bias-ply tires, period headers, 3/8-inch fuel line, and a set of 2 5/8-inch Stewart-Warner black-face gauges under the dash. Mark ordered paperwork on the car and found it was sold new at Harvey’s Chevrolet in Radford, Virginia. The Chevelle was a very early October 1968 Baltimore plant build.

After researching what he could of the Chevelle’s history, Mark concluded that it probably had never left its valley home. “All avenues I researched led back to a location or locations surrounding where I had purchased the car in Waynesboro or within the immediate surrounding areas of the Shenandoah Valley,” he says.

Over the next few months Mark reached out to the third-party seller and asked if he could put him in contact with the previous owner, who by now had recovered from his illness. After waiting for some time without a response, Mark called the man himself. The man said he had bought the Chevelle at a used car lot in 1972 and had no info about the original owner. When Mark asked him about the whereabouts of the original engine, the man said the 396 that came with the car kept fouling plugs, so he removed it and stashed it on the farm. Mark couldn’t get off the phone quick enough to get down there and look for it.

Mark built this Chevelle using several N.O.S. parts, including a set of Koni shocks. He then fabricated his own Lakewood traction bars, like the pair it wore back in the day. A 12-bolt rear stuffed with 4.10 gears gets the power to the pavement.

Sure enough, he found the L78 with a date and KG suffix code, fitted with L89 aluminum heads. There was no VIN stamped on the block, which led him to believe it was a service replacement block. Nonetheless, it was a step in the right direction. He now had the powerplant to complete the puzzle. The previous owner had also stated that the car used to have Lakewood bars under it, but he’d taken them off because they caused too stiff a ride. Mark searched for them but wasn’t able to find them.

The next question was what he should do with the Chevelle. Drop a motor in it and drive it the way it is, or do a full-blown restoration? Mark chose the latter, deciding that this Chevelle deserved to be refreshed and returned to all of its original glory, and then some.

Rejuvenated

In 2016, Mark got to work and stripped the car to its bare bones. He sent the 396 to Boley’s Automotive Machine Shop in Beckley, West Virginia, where Mark gets all of his engine work done, mainly because they specialize in race motors.

The body and chassis went to Super Car Restorations in Clymer, Pennsylvania, for bodywork, paint, glass, and trim. Proprietors Jamie Cooper and Joe Griffith are well known in the muscle car restoration field for their work on rare, top-dollar muscle rides for the masses. “These guys take pride and dedication to a new level and are extremely meticulous about every last detail,” says Mark.

Mark decided to install some “old-school cool” at the corners. These Cragar SS wheels look right at home on this 1970s-styled street machine. The thick M&H Racemasters out back and the Silvertown bias-plies up front continue the look he was after.

As for the interior, David Wells of Wells Custom Upholstery in Chesapeake, Virginia, covered the seats with fresh skins from Legendary Interiors.

Mark pressed on and restored his car with original or N.O.S. speed parts. He says, “I found a set of N.O.S. Koni shocks and made my own Lakewood traction-action bars.” A set of N.O.S. Appliance four-bolt flange headers was also added to the mix, to help get rid of the spent gases in vintage day-two style.

The Chevelle was finished in 2018. “I had the honor of being invited by Brian Henderson and Joe Swezey of Super Car Workshop out of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, to show my car in the Solid Lifter Showroom at Carlisle,” says Mark (see “Someone Left a Show Out in the Rain,” Oct. 2018; bit.ly/2PiKUEI). On the way home from the show, he went back to the Valley and stopped at the previous owner’s house to show him the final product of his restoration. “He said my traction bars were just like the ones he took off. He was quite pleased with the finished product.”

The Garnet Red Chevelle SS had sat immobile for 40 years before Mark located it by answering an ad on the internet. It was in very good shape for having languished for so long.

Ten Clean Energy Stocks For 2018: Quick November Update

At the start of November, I abandoned my short-term bearish stance on the market, writing “I’m not confident that the correction is over, but we seem to be heading into a temporary lull, and so I’m going to abandon cash as my top pick for November.” This turned out to be a good call, with my Ten Clean Energy Stocks model portfolio up 4.3% for the month, slightly behind its broad dividend income benchmark, SDY, which was up 4.9%. Its clean energy income benchmark YLCO gained 1.6%, as did the private portfolio I manage, the Green Global Equity Income Portfolio (GGEIP).

For the year through November, the model portfolio is up 6.8% beating both its benchmarks at 4.9% (SDY) and -4.3% (YLCO). GGEIP is up 2.4%, well ahead of the clean energy income benchmark, but lagging the broader universe of income stocks.

Last month, I chose Green Plains Partners(GPP), Covanta Holding(CVA) and Brookfield Renewable (BEP)as my top short term picks. GPP fell 6.6%, while CVA and BEP gained 12.7% and 6.8% respectively, for an average gain of 4.3%, slightly behind the average stock in the model portfolio. I think Green Plains Partners is in a good position for a strong rebound in December, so that will be my sole short term pick for the month.

Clearway Energy, Inc (NYSE: CWEN and CWEN/A) 12/31/17 Price: $18.90 / $18.85. Annual Dividend: $1.133(6.0%). Expected 2018 dividend: $1.26(6.7%) Low Target: $14. High Target: $25. 11/30/18 Price: $18.26/$18.03 YTD dividend: $1.324 (7.25%) YTD Total Return: 2.9% Clearway’s stock sold off significantly due to its large number of above current market price Power Purchase Agreements with PG&E (PCG). PG&E is facing the threat of possible bankruptcy due to liability from its equipment possibly being the cause of several of the recent fires in Californian, including the devastating Camp Fire. The stock recovered somewhat when California’s utilities regulator, CPUC signaled that it was committed to ensuring reliable electric service for PG&E customers (which could possibly be disrupted in a bankruptcy), even if the utility may need to be restructured. Atlantica Yield, PLC (NASD:AY) 12/31/17 Price: $21.21. Annual Dividend: $1.16(5.6%). Expected 2018 dividend: $1.39 (6.6%). Low Target: $18. High Target: $30. 11/30/18 Price: $19.62 YTD dividend: $1.44 (7.34%) YTD Total Return: -1.1% Atlantica Yield rose modestly in November along with the rest of the market.

Brookfield Renewable Partners, LP (NYSE:BEP) 12/31/17 Price: $34.91. Annual Dividend: $1.872(5.4%). Expected 2018 dividend: $2.02(5.8%). Low Target: $28. High Target: $45. 11/30/18 Price: $28.62 YTD dividend: $1.96 (2.81%) YTD Total Return: -12.6% Brookfield Renewable Partners recovered some of its losses from earlier in the year, but not on any significant news. Green Plains Partners, LP (NASD: GPP) 12/31/17 Price: $18.70. Annual Dividend: $1.84(9.8%). Expected 2018 dividend: $1.90(10.2%). Low Target: $13. High Target: $27. 11/30/18 Price: $13.46 YTD dividend: $1.895 (10.13%) YTD Total Return: -19.0% Ethanol MLP and Yieldco Green Plains Partners continue to struggle because of a weak ethanol market caused by the Trump EPA granting waivers to favored oil refiners which are undermining the biofuels market. Retaliatory tariffs on ethanol and a weak oil market are also hurting the stock. However, the oil market has begun to recover based on a new cooperation agreement between Russia and OPEC, and the EPA is reviewing its policy on waivers. I continue to think it is time to buy GPP while fears about the ethanol market have the stock trading remarkably cheaply. InfraREIT, Inc. (NYSE: HIFR) 12/31/17 Price: $18.58. Annual Dividend: $1.00(5.4%). Expected 2018 dividend: $1.00 (5.4%). Low Target: $16. High Target: $30. 11/30/18 Price: $22.90 YTD dividend: $0.50 (2.69%) YTD Total Return: 15.2% Electricity transmission REIT InfraREIT traded well above the $21 offer price from Sempra Energy (SRE) owned utility Oncor, but collapsed back down to $21 on December 4th when a second possible acquirer withdrew its non-binding offer. The Oncor acquisition remains on track. As I wrote in November, I will be dropping HIFR from the 2019 list because of the acquisition. I hope that some readers managed to get out at the temporarily inflated prices above $21.50. My fund has made some nice gains trading the volatility, but also had some significant potential losses when the stock was above $22.

Enviva Partners, LP. (NYSE:EVA) 12/31/17 Price: $27.65. Annual Dividend: $2.46(8.9%). Expected 2018 dividend: $2.65 (9.6%). Low Target: $25. High Target: $40. 11/30/18 Price: $32.00 YTD dividend: $1.875 (6.78%) YTD Total Return: 23.2% Wood pellet Yieldco and Master Limited Partnership Enviva gave back some of its gains in November, but without any significant news after the recent earnings report.

Final Thoughts

I continue to be very concerned about stock market valuation, and expect the correction that started last summer to continue in 2019. However, I expect December may continue the market rebound we saw in November, so I see the coming month as one in which to opportunistically take profits and increase allocations to cash in anticipation of better buying opportunities in 2019.

Petting Zoo Ecoli Dangers: Not As Silent As We Once Thought

As a child going to a petting zoo was so much fun. We never really realized that there were serious dangers that could be associated with them. A fond childhood memory was going to a miniature horse farm that had shows where the horses dressed up and a part of this whole performance was that kids got selected from the audience for certain parts of the show. You could be really hands on with the animals in both the shows and at the small petting zoo afterwards. A total tourist trap in a small local town, but it was so much fun.There were literally gum ball machines filled with animal food and you could hand feed the farm animals and I recall them licking us and everything. We are talking about the early 1990’s, and I don’t ever recall sanitization being huge and this was prior to the time that everyone carried little bottles of hand sanitizer.

Getting illnesses from petting zoos is more common than we were ever aware. The CDC reports that each year from 2010-2015 approximately 100 outbreaks of illnesses were reported as a result of petting zoos, fairs and educational farms.Some of the most common harmful germs people get from animals at exhibits are E. coli O157:H7, Cryptosporodium, and Salmonella infections, but there are also many other types of germs that can spread between animals and people.

Much like preventing many illnesses hand washing is key to staying well in many situations including petting zoos. People often assume that if an animal looks clean that they are safe from illness, but this is simply a myth. Another myth is that a clean “habitat” for animals is a germ-free zone. Some people get sick from never touching an animal because of contaminated living environments.

How To Stay Safe at Petting Zoos According to the CDC

Wash Your Hands Often

Find out where handwashing stations are located.

Always wash your hands right after petting animals or touching anything in animal areas (where they live, roam, or eat).

Wash your hands when you leave animal areas, even if you did not touch the animals.

Running water and soap are best. If running water and soap are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Wash your hands with soap and water as soon as a sink is available.

Eat and Drink Safely

Keep food and drinks out of animal areas.

Don’t prepare, serve, or eat food in animal areas (with the exception of service animals, or animals that assist people with disabilities).

Don’t share your food with animals, to keep yourself and the animals healthy. Animals should eat the food made for them.

Don’t eat or drink raw (unpasteurized) products made or sold at animal exhibits, including milk, cheese, cider, and juice.

Remember: Wash your hands before preparing food or drinks and before eating and drinking.

Keep Children Safe Around Animals

Young children are more likely to get sick from harmful germs that animals can carry. For this reason, CDC recommends children 5 years of age and younger not have contact with reptiles, amphibians, and live poultry including baby chicks and ducklings because these animals are commonly associated with outbreaks of disease.

Children always need adult supervision around animals especially children who are under the age of 6 and who are prone to putting things into their mouths.

Never allow children to put their thumbs, fingers, or objects (like pacifiers) in their mouths when they’re around animals or in an animal area.

Encourage and supervise handwashing.

Do not take or use strollers, bottles, pacifiers, spill-proof cups, or toys into animal areas.

There are important things to know if you manage or operate a petting zoo or educational exhibit as well. We live in an area where every summer there are lots of county and state fair events where people are hands on with a lot of animals and often a little information is great for guests.

Design the exhibit to separate animal areas from places where people eat.

Use signs to point out the areas where people can eat, and the areas for animals.

Install handwashing stations at exits of animal exhibits. Make sure that some of the handwashing stations are low enough for children to reach.

Use plain language and pictures to show visitors how to stay safe and healthy when visiting animal exhibits.

Education/Information

Encourage visitors to wash their hands after visiting or handling animals.

Be aware that healthy animals can carry germs that might make visitors sick.

Train staff and educate visitors about preventing disease transmission between humans and animals.

Use a variety of methods to provide information to the public. For example, use brochures, signs, and verbal instructions.

What are the symptoms of illnesses contracted at a petting zoo?

The most common symptoms are diarrhea and abdominal pain. Other symptoms may include vomiting, fever, cramps, and bloody diarrhea. People with mild symptoms usually recover without treatment. However, these illnesses can lead to hospitalizations and severe complications also can occur.

Conclusion

Times have certainly changed from my adventures with the miniature horses and the petting zoo. We know more now than ever ways to protect ourselves from illnesses and by practicing these proper techniques we can prevent a lot of illnesses. The age of technology has helped us to learn now more than ever things that we need to know to stay happy and healthy as a family.

While you are out and about enjoying time with your family and you happen upon a petting zoo or exhibit of animals please be sure to wash your hands properly after handling them or even being around their living quarters. The illnesses that you can contract from being around animals are often hard to combat for young children, the elderly or those with compromised immune systems so being safe is the best bet when heading out.
