What is a narcissist?
What characterizes a narcissist? I've encountered this term frequently, not because my friends or colleagues have applied it to me, but rather due to my older sister's frequent use of it. She appears to believe that I fit this description. To diagnose someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), five out of the nine criteria from the DSM-IV-TR are necessary. Some of the traits associated with NPD include a heightened sense of self-importance, preoccupation with fantasies of power, wealth, success, and love, a constant need for admiration, a belief in one's uniqueness, a lack of empathy, arrogance, entitlement, a preference for associating only with important or special individuals, and a tendency to exploit others for personal gain.
It's crucial to distinguish between narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder. Narcissism refers to certain exhibited traits in a person, where they don't meet enough criteria to be categorized as having NPD.
Allow me to elaborate on the fact that most of us possess elements of personality disorders to some degree. For instance, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the most commonly discussed ones. Each of us experiences varying levels of OCD tendencies. Similarly, anxiety and periods of depression are universal; the key lies in the extent to which these disorders disrupt our daily functioning.
This principle applies to both narcissism and NPD. Celebrating our achievements occasionally and taking pride in reaching goals are healthy behaviors. There's no issue with that. Therefore, if someone labels you as a narcissist or suggests you have OCD, don't be overly concerned. More often than not, they might be projecting their own emotions onto you. Give them space to express themselves, and eventually, the genuine truth will emerge.
Examples and Anecdotes: Imagine a coworker who consistently seeks praise for their achievements and often downplays the accomplishments of others. While this behavior might seem narcissistic, it doesn't necessarily meet the criteria for NPD. On the other hand, someone with NPD might manipulate their colleagues into doing their work for them, exploiting their desire to please for personal gain.
Treatment and Coping Strategies: For those dealing with narcissism or NPD, seeking professional help from therapists or counselors is a crucial step. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and other therapeutic approaches can be effective in addressing the underlying issues and promoting healthier behaviors. Developing empathy, self-awareness, and coping strategies are integral parts of the recovery process. For friends and family, setting boundaries and encouraging open communication can help manage interactions with individuals exhibiting narcissistic traits. Remember that change takes time and dedication, but it's possible with the right support and commitment.

to plot or to not plot, that's the question
there's post under the tag that... really tickled my brain because i somewhat agree with it. but not entirely, considering i do still believe OP sounds... i dunno, something, while they are telling FK stans to “have some dignity”. so I'll just add to that, because i think fan interpretation and looking deep into a story is important, than say, just being fed all the info.
now let's start with saying i am a FKT stan and I'll be somewhat biased in my approach, but i will still try to keep this as neutral as possible.
that said, i do think jojo's writing needs improvement. a looooooot of improvement. the other day i was complaining to my friend @skyfish7 how jojo tends to use serious topics as plot devices and then does nothing with them. also the fact that he has a flair for drama and usually seems to include it in places to engage the viewers but he handles it poorly (boeing, I'm looking at you bitchass) or simply doesn't conclude them well (kant's phobia, bison's bdsm shtick, etc, i know we still have 2 eps left, don't kill me yet).
i do think OP was coming from a genuine place but also, i will take the time to defend jojo here too. because THK is not all trash. joong and dunk's characters are visibly seen to be falling in love, whereas first and khaotung's are more subtle.
i know what OP means by saying that it's still hard to believe that kant is in love with bison. because part of me feels that too. i believe a lot of it is because we do not see any detailed development where it's needed or it is skipped over in favour for more drama. like i said, jojo tends to gravitate towards big impactful scenes but he does not lay out the finer details. i am choosing to think that's just his writing style and not him just being a terrible writer. as my girl sky said, it leaves something to the viewer's imagination. and yes, she's right and i agree. spoon feeding every bit of a story is lame and boring, but sometime you do need to add little details where they are needed.
if you've already read my post about how THK seems to be losing steam, you might know what I'm talking about.
I'm very much convinced that this could have done well with a binge watch or if it were in movie format. but imo there's too many things going on with the focus distributed disproportionately among them, which in turn, i think, kinda makes the character development take backseat.
but let me add something about bikant because OP seems to be under the impression that they are simply trash.
jojo tends to make the falling in love subtle. at least for his FK characters. in bikant's case, they were both already smitten with each other from the first meeting. especially kant. he was head over heels for bison and it was very visible. it was deliberately shown. so when he does start the mission of getting dirt on him, the most visible emotion we see from kant is guilt. nothing else but guilt. and that is because it's already established he likes bison as a person. kant's character is written as someone who compartmentalizes things so even when he does find out bison's a hitman and there's proof (we see him staring horrified at the corkboard in their house) he quickly dismisses it. we repeatedly see style telling us that kant is smitten with bison. why? because kant doesn't have the mental capacity to think about romance right now, so it's style who tells the viewers his friend is wrapped around bison's little finger. the time when we finally actually see him do anything remotely truthful is ep#7 — the bowling alley and northern lights scene. kant has successfully gathered all the info he can and now he knows he might lose bison. so this one night he actually goes and lets himself love truthfully. he does all the things he would have done after that first meeting with bison. and then when bison gets shot, that's when he realises what he actually wants. the hospital scene is an important one because it cements the fact that kant cares, kant is in love, but his brain hasn't caught up to the feeling yet the idea is there, the proof is there, but he hasn't had the reprieve to sit and think and let that love marinate well. it's why even when kant says that he loves bison, it's difficult for us to believe. it's difficult for bison to believe. remember, we are viewing the beach scene from bison's pov and he ultimately asks, “you are not fooling me again, are you?” and that is the question from the viewers as well.
“you are not fooling us again, are you, kant?”
so all bison and we can do is take kant at face value and choose to believe him. that's all there is to it.
bison on the other hand? bro has been whipped since the first night. he is a hopeless romantic. he is an abused child hungering for love stuck in an adult's body. bison has been infatuated with kant from the get go, but he has also been suspicious and we have seen that suspicion slowly drop and build back up again time and time. but the moment bison actually spends all of ep#7 with kant and says, “i feel like my life is about to change”, that's him falling in love. that's him acknowledging that he is gone for good and he is finally choosing to believe kant despite the previous shady sus things he's done. bison had chosen to believe in him despite fadel warning him time and time again, and that's why the beach scene hits so hard. he is simply a fool in love. he is naive. he is the younger brother who doesn't know better. he just wanted to love, he loved and he got duped into being loved back (we all know that wasn't the case, but, bison POV like i said).
now, coming back to the point i was trying to make : do i think an extra tidbit of scene where kant's thought process was expanded on could have been better? yes.. maybe. but as a writer who likes to keep her readers interpreting and guessing, i choose to forgive jojo this time (as well). like i said, maybe this is just how he tends to write and honestly that's fine. every writer has a set of audience they are aiming for and i think there are plenty who enjoy his work (i do too, i just wish he'd tone down on the super big things suddenly being thrown in out of nowhere and then doing nothing with it).
and as far as sandray goes, boy do i have news for OP because ray is a classic example of a mentally ill abused child who is now an alcoholic and sand is a surrogate husband/caregiver growing up in poverty who puts himself last. that's their story. that's the story jojo wanted to tell, and i will rant about ray and sand and forgiveness (because OP thinks he is an asshole, so i want to make a point) but.... in a different post.
for now, this is it. i hope you forgive and understand kant. bro is trying and so are we.

Keepers
A short THK fic (AO3)
"What did I tell you, uh?" Fadel says between his teeth, fingers digging into flesh, tongue tasting the cut in his mouth where Kant got in a remarkably mean punch. "What did I fucking tell you."
Kant jerks, tries to buck him off, but Fadel is not a light man and knows how to make himself heavier, how to be a dead weight on a soon to be dead – that’s when the door slides open.
"Kant, help, I forgot my–" Kant’s baby brother, the kid Fadel watched leave not ten minutes ago, stands in the doorway. It must not be the first time he’s caught his sibling writhing on the ground with another man, because he has a split-second of embarrassed amusement before he truly takes the scene in, and blanches.
Kant jolts. "Babe, get– "
Fadel smashes the fucker’s face against the floor, a perfectly automatic gesture. "Get in, kid," He says. "Close the door behind you."
He can’t have anyone running for help right now. There are enough complications as it is.
Under him, Kant makes a noise like a wounded beast and trashes, wildly. "Babe," he barks, "get out. Leave. That’s an order."
For some reason, it reminds Fadel that he brought his gun with him. He’d almost forgotten, because the urge to get his hands on Kant, to squeeze, to feel – but he’s a professional. Of course he brought his gun with him.
He puts even more weight on his knee – the one that’s keeping Kant pinned to the ground, left hand trapped under his torso – and twists Kant’s right arm higher, so the bastard will think twice before struggling to get free. It hurts like hell, Fadel knows from experience.
He draws the gun from his holster, from under his jacket, puts the muzzle at the nape of Kant’s neck. Kant goes rigid. The kid breathes in tiny gasps.
He’s still standing at the treshold, frozen. So unused to violence. "Get in," Fadel says. "And sit down. I won’t repeat myself."
"Okay," the kid nods. Steps inside, closes the door, slides down to the ground. Something like a sob, from Kant on the floor, but he doesn't move. "Okay, sir. I’m inside. I won’t run. Can you, uh. Can you put the gun down?"
"No," Fadel says. Ignores Kant’s urgent please.
"If we owe you money," the kid starts, "I can–"
"I don’t want money."
– I kept him in the dark, he’s not part of this, please, you can’t –
"Then anything you want, sir, I’m sure we can find–" and Kant whines, the sound awful, cutting his brother off. He bucks again, an attempt at pushing himself up – Fadel grinds his knee and the gun down harder.
"I want nothing from you, kid."
"But–"
"But Kant, here," – they already know your names and faces, there’s nothing else he can tell them, come on, Fadel – Fadel presses down, down, even though there isn’t any space left to press into. "Has to take responsibility for something."
"– and I will, I will, fuck! Just leave my brother alone!"
"What, like you did mine?"
It’s funny, how that seeps the fight out of Kant. "Screw you," he grits out. Then, like he hasn’t: "Fadel. Please."
"Is this about– " the kid asks, looking for another angle, still trying, tenacious little man. "What–"
"I have handcuffs." Fadel says.
"What?" The kid repeats. His brother is quicker.
"Okay," he nods. Relaxes, except for the arm Fadel’s still twisting up. "There’s a steel bar running under the kitchen island."
"Sturdy?"
"Yes."
"Car keys?"
"Right pocket."
"Good. I’m letting go of your wrist. Don’t move."
Fadel pulls the cuffs out. Throws them next to Kant’s head.
"We’re all going to get up. Then you’re going to handcuff your brother to that bar and take his phone, and once that’s done we’re going to your car. If you try anything– "
"I won’t."
Fadel gets up, watches Kant do the same and crouch in front of his little brother to pull him to his feet with a gentle litany of hey, hey, I know, I’m sorry, I promise I will explain, you’ll get to hit me when I come back but I really have to do this, I just need you to wait here for a bit –
It works, against all odds, the kid letting himself get carted around and sat down as if in a daze. His eyes don’t leave his brother’s face, and Fadel can’t see it, but he understands a little better, now, why Bison ate it all up.
"Where’s your phone?" Kant asks.
"I don’t – I don’t know. I came back to get it, I–"
"Good, that’s good."
"Don’t lie to me," the kid whispers, and the cuffs click, and Kant straightens, ruffles his brother’s hair. It breaks the spell. "Wait, no, Kant, don’t!" Kant is outside so fast Fadel almost has to jog to keep up.
The door, once shut, muffles the kid’s screams. Facing straight ahead, Kant is standing like they can’t reach him at all. He opens his mouth.
"Let’s go," Fadel says before he has to hear thank you. "You’re driving."

i’ve never watched any of p’au works so i don’t know the kind of atmosphere he put in his shows, but since OL is a funny comedy maybe CFC will have a lot of comedy too and i know people will get mad at bcs ppl hate funny things
I was delighted when I found out FirstKhaotung will be working with P’Au. If you have only watched OL, then I implore you to watch the others shows he has directed - this includes the massively successful My School President that pretty much put Gem4th on the map of Thai BL and My School Mix Up (also Gem4th)
Plus, he is the protege of P’Aof and has worked closely with him (being his assistant director) of these projects: Last Twilight, Moonlight Chicken, Bad Buddy, A Tale of 1000 Stars, Still 2gether
And also the screenwriter for classic Thai BL (pre-2020 era): including Theory of Love (OffGun) and Dark Blue Kiss (TayNew and PoddGawin)
Now, I haven’t watched Theory of Love and Dark Blue Kiss, but I’ve watched all the rest. And while I may not vibe with some of them (Last Twilight, I’m looking at you 😅), these shows are still excellent in their own right.
Suffice to say, P’Au track record is pretty good. His flare is slightly different from P’Aof who tends to be more angsty-vibe/melodramatic/lakorn-like while I find P’Au to be softer, more romantic still with some angst/hurt-comfort vibe. And as you can tell with OL, I think he is doing a good job with balancing comedy as well.
As for your last sentence about “people will get mad because they hate funny things” - I’m interpreting it as you alluding to some FK fans (or casual watchers of FK-related things) wanting them to play only in serious, dramatic/angsty roles. I suspect this is partly because their introduction to FK is from The Eclipse, MLC or OF (or even THK), where let’s be honest - their roles are more “heavier” and serious in nature.
See, this is where I will like people to go watch First/Khaotung earlier roles because the boys have great comedic timing.
First in The Shipper (and as a supporting character in Wake up Ladies) was amazing. Seeing First (in The Shipper) embodying a fangirl while also trying to navigate his (her?) feeling for the best friend and brother - was funny but doozy lol
You can tell he was still honing his skills then but without these roles, we won’t get his subtle but effective comedic take of this scene in the THK (for example):
Similarly, Songpol/Paul in 55:15 Never Too Late. This show remains the most under-rated gem of a show ever. Seeing Khaotung acting like a 55 yrs old man in a 15 yrs old body while simultaneously fangirling over his idol - EPIC (plus his chemistry with Piploy (she plays Jeya) - the idol he worshipped (who with Paul suddenly finding themselves in their 15 yrs old bodies), his now same aged niece as the latter tries to teach him how to be 15 yrs old effectively - 🫡🫡🫡). I still cried buckets for him (by the end of the show) because what is a KT show without tears 😭 but it was worth it.
(Here, have a fun reel of Paul/Jaya being chaotic lol):
And let’s not forget Tonhon Chonlatee - I know people trashed this show a lot. Yes, it’s not the greatest series. But again, Khaotung nailed it with the comedic scenes. And the way he can say all the cringiest lines with an earnest, cute face just made me snort with laughter, ok? This show also has the best queer friendship group ever. Not to mention - Khaotung and Ciize chemistry as besties. It also has people (who did watch it) worshipping Khaotung/Neo as a ghostship.
I guess what I’m trying to say is - I have the upmost faith in FirstKhaotung and P’Au. FK have never failed us and they always shined in whatever they were given (even when it’s just a cameo/side roles - I’m looking at you Zero!! Home School Season 2 when?) and just looked at them with their cameo in OL recently (as Alone/Kaitong).
I’m not sure why people want doom and gloom so much for them (the real world is already terrible as it is). So, give me all the good vibes, fluffy cats and sweetest romance (with a touch of comedy or more 😉) - I, for one, cannot wait for this! (Ads and blatant sponsors of pet food/toys included 🤣)
#asked and answered#no seriously people go watch their earlier shows#while FK May be known for their dramatic roles#they start of with comedies lol#khaotung thanawat#first kanaphan#firstkhao#firstkhaotung#cat for cash

I know THK is full of incongruities but the worst of them is the fact that they never really even moved a finger to make us believe that Kant and Bison are in love. Look, it's not my first time watching a GMMTV production, so I am very used to unresolved stuff or rushed endings, but there's something that makes a bl a bl and that's the love story as the center of the plot. That's actually the only thing they need to take care of carefully because the audience won't probably search for more, but they couldn't do even that. And I find this so disrespectful because some people talk about the budget they have to direct, write and produce as if that was the real problem behind. Look, THK doesn't look cheap, and they have popular couple that guarantee a certain amount of viewers. And I know this is not a elite company, but it's so low to blame it on the budget when it's not that hard to even write a love story for the most popular couple on your show. It's insulting how the audience needs to fill the empty holes in KantBison story line all the time, creating theories and narratives to make some sense to this incomplete and incoherent "love story".
It annoys me because it feels like they treat fans like they are so trashy that they would eat trash just because it has their favs face in it. And maybe it's true but it still speaks more of how ungrateful and mediocre the production team is than fans' impulsive actions.
Since Only Friends, I loved First and Khao as a couple, but the story turned Ray into a horrible person without any possibilities of changing: and yes, no matter how much they made Khao cry in every scene so he looks pitiful, it still doesn't change the fact that he never changed and that they made Sand accept his horrific future with that jerk because IT'S FIRSTKHAO???? I don't even know why they do this.
If they can't built a coherent plot, or it's so hard for them to solve problems (they should probably leave the job to someone who really wants to work and improve, actually...) they could just not make Firstkhao's characters the most hateful people on Earth just to build some deepness to their characters (bc apparently only traumatized people and criminals can be deep). What the fuck was that last episode of Only Friends I just can't forget it.
And the same thing is now happening with Kant and Bison, I still can't believe a single word Kant says, and Bison is so immature and dramatic that their scenes are so hard to watch without complaining every 2 seconds. It destroys the experience of someone like me who actually believes in them as a very powerful duo.
So, yeah, speak your truth about THK but say it all. The excitement of the show fell down because the expectations of the fans (fk fans) were completely shattered. To me, this show made Joongdunk a fantastic favor because they have now a very good exposure and also the best characters in their careers because the love story is kinda good but also because the other one is so bad that anything could shine beside them. Fadel and Style as characters don't actually deserve to be generalized when it comes to shade on THK because their story is acceptable to a bl from GMMTV at least...
I just need people to have some dignity, they can't just keep doing you guys so wrong.

Of course we could consider that Belial's loyalty was programmed into him, but tbh that makes me sad, so let's not go with that. The thought that he was made to be ignored and used is just sad, because he can't help it. The thought that he did it to himself because this is a hell of his own choosing is slightly better, because that means one day he can maybe choose something else.
Besides, WMTSB as a whole is about free will and choices
I can accept that Lucilius added this proclivity to get attached and be incredibly loyal to Belial because it's one of Sahar's attributes that he put on the trash pile, but Belial still chose Lucilius to get attached to. That might be motivated by how he watched Lucifer get treated with favoritism and yearned for that himself, but that's neither here nor there.
But Belial being literally made to desperately love Lucilius is just cruel. And I wouldn't put it beyond Lucilius to essentially create a sentient sex toy who's yearning to be used, only to not use it, ever. But like I said, it's sad. And he seems so genuinely annoyed by it sometimes that I don't think he expected it to get quite so bad. Sure, it would be funny if he created Belial this way and then got upset at his creation doing what he made him to do, there's some irony in there, a bit of "hoist by his own petard".
But I choose to believe that, since we established Lucilius already put so much into Lucifer and Belial, like their evolution purposes, the Sahar stuff and them also needing to fill in for the wedges of light and dark and life and death... They're already serving quadruple duty, I don't think he thought to also add "Loves me desperately" to one of them. Least of all the one that wasn't his clone, y'know.
Yeah i agree honestly. I think with the themes of wmtsb and the irony of Belial saying he doesn't have a choice while he chose to live like that, it's important for Belial's obsession to be his own, not something he was programmed to be. Because it means he always had a way out, he just chose not to.
And it is also more realistic. Because yeah this type of neglect and abuse can lead to be, instead, clinging even more to the one who is making you suffer. Because people don't always cope well with what happens to them.
Especialy since he serves of contrast to Sandalphon and how Lucilius neglected him as well, but how Sandalphon instead worked to break free and find something for himself. They contrast each other in the way they were neglected and used by Lucilius. And it has more weight if they have the same level of free will in this decision.
I do think there is still this idea of the sides of Sahar Lucilius tried to get rid off, that ended up being directed at him. But maybe we can take it as more metaphoric or like, just something that Belial was naturally more susceptible to do because of other attributes, and that it is because Belial developed as his own person that he naturally reproduced this patern from Sahar, without it being literally programmed by Lucilius. Esp as you say, with how Belial could just compare how he was treated differently in order to really have everything alligning for an unhealthy devotion to form.
Also honestly Lucilius creati g a sex toy just in case only to disregard him because he realizes he has no use for him is. Not unlikely. After all, creating something just to make it just in case and discarding it when in faft there was no use to it, js what he did to Sandalphon. I doubt he freated Belial for that tho, but the idea of implemanting something like that in case before realizing he doesnt need it is possible. Thk i reallh do believe Belial's sex characteristics were more another thing that developped organically without much input from Lucilius other than just normal development from socilizjng with someone.
As for Sahar i do think it was something that was so vague to Lucilius thag, perhaps the separation of values was a bit subconscious, like, Lucilius didnt genuinely think of Sahar as a being and his qualities as solid things and stuff. If it makes sense.
But yeah i genuinely think it was more the circumstances of Belial's life and being starved for affection especially from seeing how loved his twin was, like a regular person, that shapped him to what he is today, rather than Lucilius programming all of that directly.
Giving Belial more agecncy so he can screw his own life up on his own terms.

“You dead yet?”
*Anthony Ramos x Reader x Jasmine Cephas Jones *Word count: 671 Request: So I'm not gonna sit here and deny that I am Ant x JCJ x Reader trash, so here I am, to request some more, bc I love them and I love you, so how about prompt 16 "Person A is sick and B is over the top mother hen while C will kick their leg and go “You dead yet?" with person A being the sick one? Thks bb xx - Anonymous Summary: Person A is sick and B is over the top mother hen while C will kick their leg and go “You dead yet?”
Author’s Note: I’m trying!!!
Warnings: fluff, brief mention of dying although it's not sad or angsty in any way possible???, a poly relationship
Masterlist // Request something!
"I feel like death," you groaned, covering your eyes with your arm as you rolled around on the bed. You heard a light laughter come from the doorway of your bedroom, making you remove your hand from your face and glare over at the source of the sound. Anthony walked in with his arms crossed over his chest as he leaned against the doorway, smirking at you.
"You alright, princess?" He cooed as he walked over to pinch your hot cheek playfully.
You growled and slapped his hand away, pouting a bit as he continued to laugh. "Don't worry, baby. Jazzy will be home soon and she can go all mother hen on you." You huffed and rolled onto your side, still making eye contact with Anthony.
"You aren't very nice," you grumbled, pressing your face into your soft pillow and burrowing deeper into your blankets.
You heard Anthony let out a sigh as he laid down in the bed next to you and began scooping you up into his arms, letting you burrow your face into the crook of his neck. "Do you need anything, baby?" He asked, pressing a kiss to your temple. You shook your head and wrapped your arms around him, letting out a faint 'no, just wanna cuddle.'
It was silent until you both heard the front door open and close, alerting you both that Jasmine was home. "I'm home!" She sang as she walked up the stairs towards your shared bedroom. "Where are my loves?" She questioned, her smile fading when she walked into your bedroom and saw the sight before her.
"Oh, my poor baby!" She cried, dropping her bags and pushing Anthony out of the way so she could cuddle you. "Are you alright? Do you need anything?" Before you could answer, you heard Anthony let out a soft grunt as he fell onto the floor before he started laughing.
"Jas, I'm fine-" You whispered, only to get cut off again.
"Nuh uh! No talking! Your voice will get even worse if you do so." She lectured, petting your hair. You let out a quiet whine in protest only for her to give you a warning glare that made you quiet down.
It was silent until you felt your eyes struggle to stay open until you finally dozed off.
You were awoken when you felt a kick to your shin, causing you to whine and barely open your eyes when someone whispered; "you dead yet?" You opened your eyes slowly and narrowed them at the grinning Anthony.
"Shut. Up." You huffed, trying to kick him back but ended up kicking the air when he moved away. "Jas will kick your ass if she sees you making fun of me." You grinned a bit, almost laughing when a look of realization spread across his face.
He shook his head, snapping himself out of his thoughts and smirked at you. "No, she won't." He declared, crossing his arms proudly. "
Before you could answer, you both heard a voice yell from downstairs; "Anthony Ramos Martinez! Get your ass down here!" You watched his face go pale and you smirked, cuddling up into your pillow again. "Have fun."

The Man with Bogart’s Face (1980) [New Beverly Cinema / January 15]
Robert Sacchi plays--get this--a man who makes himself look just like Bogie, gives himself the name Sam Marlowe, and then opens his own PI agency. And that’s before it gets weird.
Heat (1987) + Malone (1986) [New Beverly Cinema / February 26]
Burt Reynolds, whose work I devoured this year, plays two troubled figures in these pugilistic treats. In one, he kicks out a hanging light in order to set a baddie on fire (Heat), but in the other (Malone) he does genuinely over-the-top stuff.
Trapped (1949) + The File on Thelma Jordon (1950) [Egyptian Theater / March 29]
Opening night of Noir City is always a delight----hell, they serve Bogart’s estate’s booze at intermission. And it’s for that reason, and a few too many finger sandwiches and whiskey sours, that I can’t fully tell you what I enjoyed about these films beyond, you know, their noir-ness.
Sudden Fear (1952) [Egyptian Theater / March 31]
Every year at Noir City, there’s one I-didn’t-see-it-coming highlight, and this was it. Joan Crawford plays a maniacal actress placed in serious peril by her deadly lover, the even more maniacal Jack Palance. This is a Cinema of Hysteria par excellence, where it feels like Palance had his mug sculpted for extra-meanness.
Playgirl (1954) [Egyptian Theater / April 2]
If there’s a runner-up for my previous proviso, it’s this stunning firecracker that features Shelley Winters playing the ultimate woman scorned. I still think of the scene where she trashes her apartment in a drunken rage about once a week.
Eagle’s Claw (1978) + The Hot, The Cool, and the Vicious (1977) + Fists of Fury 2 (1977) [New Beverly Cinema / April 23]
A trio of martial arts films by Lee Tso-Nam, this triple sported varying styles (drunken master, battle royales, mortal combat, etc.), and, as importantly, a high quota of stunning fight sequences to relative runtime.
After the Fox (1966) + The Heartbreak Kid (1972) [New Beverly Cinema / April 28]
A duo of Neil Simon-penned films, I went 1) to see Peter Sellers in anything, and 2) to finally see The Heartbreak Kid (this shouldn’t be as difficult as it’s become). The big reveal here is that THK left me cool--in fairness, the protagonist is meant to be unpleasant, and I'm cautious about the mushrooming cult around Elaine May--while ATF, which I found to be a kind of semi-lame Italian farce, has continually grown in my estimation in retrospect. See that movie.
The Driller Killer (1979) [Egyptian Theater / May 17]
This was actually a triple feature, but as I’d seen the other two before--The New York Ripper (1982) + Nightmare (1981)--only this one fits on this list. Strange enough, it’s also the only one that deserves to! It’s supreme grime from Abel Ferrara that gives you the gross (eating a hamburger and chugging milk) and the grosser (eviscerating a rabbit corpse with an electric drill).
The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972) [New Beverly Cinema / June 6]
This was an especially bleak movie on an especially sad day for me. A remarkably human--in the worst ways (angry; callow; bitter)--film that is also a major work of art. (Added bonus, Obama’s daughter, Malia, was allegedly at our screening.)
Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972) [USC School of Cinema / August 21]
Mean-spirited but not as vulgar or thoughtlessly cruel as many giallos. Big plus for Edwige Fenech being Edwige Fenech.
Killer Crocodile (1989) [Egyptian Theater / September 27]
I appreciate any killer animal film that is not bashful about showing off that killer beast. And I'm a sucker for Italians playing Americans (in front of and behind the camera).
Jennifer’s Body (2009) [Egyptian Theater / September 29]
Yes, it was misrepresented during its inaugural run. But, as importantly, it’s a wickedly funny and gnarly horror film.
Mooch (Goes to Hollywood) (1971) [Egyptian Theater / October 2]
It’s not every day you get to see the long-overdue theatrical premiere of a made-for-TV lark featuring the dog from Benji mixing it up with Vincent Price and Zsa Zsa Gabor’s voiceover. (Unless you live in L.A.)
Asylum (1972) [Dynasty Typewriter / October 12]
This was actually one of my least favorite horror anthologies in what proved to be a joyously fun night of them--except The Twilight Zone (1983), which I hate for reasons that are mine (and many others). Asylum gets the nod, however, because it’s the only one I hadn’t seen, and it’s a night worth remembering. Plus, I did love the little wind-up dolls packed with blood and guts because of course I did.
Ruby (1977) [Aero Theater / October 26]
Love me some Horrorthon, and the lineup this year was tremendous. Butcher, Baker, and Nightmare Maker (1982) was the gonzo highlight, but (like most of the lineup) I'd seen it before. Therefore, by default, the inferior Ruby gets the nod from me. (The other feature I’d never seen, Demonoid: Messenger of Death, 1981, I slept through too much to consider--that and the fact that what I saw was excruciatingly bad.) I also mostly slept through this one, but it had Uncle Leo (Seinfeld) as a gangster and a drive-in that only plays Attack of the 50 Foot Woman so it gets my cautiously emphatic (yes, that) recommendation.
Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985) + The Uninvited (1988) [New Beverly Cinema / October 30]
This celebration of the actor Clu Gulager at the New Beverly felt like old home week; he’s been a fixture at the theater for years. Yet on this particular night I found out that all the rumors of NES2 are true (it deserves its cult!) and that The Uninvited makes for just about the best neo-schlock horror film you can watch with an avid crowd.
Walking the Edge (1983) [New Beverly Cinema / November 12]
Robert Forster--another actor whose oeuvre I took a deep dive into this year--got his fair shake at the New Beverly last month, and this film may have been the (feature film) highlight. It was part of a triple with Stunts (1977), a great film I’d already seen, and Kinky Coaches and the Pom Pom Pussycats (1981), a film that features a wonderfully bonkers Forster sex scene and just about nothing else. This Bronson-esque exploitation vehicle for Forster and Nancy Kwan (!!!), however, was engrossing and quirky in all the best ways.
Banyon (1971) [New Beverly Cinema / November 25]
Since I cheated with Mooch, I'll cheat here with another made-for-TV night out at the theaters. (And how great is it that L.A. allows you to have multiple nights out watching made-for-TV movies on actual celluloid?) The pilot movie of Forster’s short-lived PI TV series was screened at the front of a celebration of Forster’s life. It was a magical night with an electric room, as the event was invite-only for his friends, family, and colleagues...and any of us who attended other Forster features that month. Banyon earned its place on this list because it was quite good for a no-fuss gumshoe movie mystery.
Nightfall (1956) [New Beverly Cinema / December 4]
Aldo Ray as the ultimate lug-sap, in a moody Tourneur grinder with a gruesome--even by our jaded modern standards--denouement. Yes.
