Adventures in America, the Beautiful | #46 | October 2020

With Thanksgiving 2020 here at the time of writing, I reflect with gratitude on adventures I've enjoyed this year in America. Not even a global pandemic keeps me from finding moments to love and to share.

In these tales, I bring you on journeys around America's West!

As a Peace Corps Volunteer, I’d often received questions from community members asking me about my country, the States. It's so big with such diverse people from diverse places. One of my favorite aspects of America is its national and state parks. Of the former, I'd said in an interview, "These are bastions of treasured beauty."

Like my earlier October 2020 story, today's tale highlights many months! The pandemic has led me back to parks as a physically distant way to enjoy our nation's wonders with minimal risk. I loved how even within the States, one can travel just a fraction of the country to feel in someplace unique. I’ll share about journeys to natural places in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, California and Oregon.

May 2020 with Relatives and National Parks

My youngest brother, who’d turned 18 in November, graduated high school as my last sibling. To commemorate the occasion, an uncle and aunt on our dad’s side who were also my sisters’ godparents flew from Kansas into Vegas to see us.

Our relatives always brought such goofy cheer. When my siblings and I were little, they'd take us on adventures or out to eat at places where our parents usually didn’t. As we grew up, these began to include national parks trips. I felt so excited.

The last time our relatives had visited when I was stateside, they visited when I was graduating college. At that time, they'd invited my younger siblings on a trip to parks I wanted to see, but I didn’t get to go. They might have thought that I was busy, packing and goodbyes. They were probably right, though I really love a good trip.

Well, with the pandemic, my time’s been freer, so I felt grateful to get to come!

With Memorial Day in Week 12 (May 22–28), we witnessed distant stars and trees hundreds-of-years-old at Great Basin National Park (Nev.), hiked by towering cacti in Saguaro (Ariz.) and saw epic rock formations of Capitol Reef (Utah). As usual, I took copious photos.

In Arizona, we also visited the family of another of Dad's siblings, who’d moved there. Our aunt had just received her doctoral degree! I felt reassured about grad school aspirations. A cousin and uncle were kind as ever, too.

Overall, I loved the trip and our conversations. My siblings and I had this wild time when we drove in an area so remote that it reminded me of Mongolia. (Eek!) In many ways, I'd still felt centered in Mongolia, just visiting the States. After all, I’d only been back a couple months.

Pentecost into June

The next week we had Pentecost, so I reflected on joys and renewals God brought through travels with family. Behind the Holy Triduum and Incarnation, I tend to consider Pentecost my favorite Christian holiday. I love how despite our shortcomings, God renews us to keep striving. 2020's Pentecost Monday fell on the fourth anniversary to when I decided I'd start journaling.

In the following week, I spent my days cleaning through the garage while rewarding myself on mornings with treadmill walks and attempts through a sister’s copy of “Fire Emblem: Three Houses.” Week 14 (June 5–11) ended with Dad’s announcement that he’d married his fiancée, and shortly after I returned to Reno, Nev.

June Memories, Reno and Abroad

During Week 14 (June 5–11), while helping my sister and our friend move into the new house in Reno, I felt a sense of how my primary identity have changed over my life.

With my black sandals, blue jeans and pine/mint green flannel, I felt back in Shanghai. In elementary school, I grew up feeling like a Midwestern American. In junior high and high school, I felt like an Asian American. And by uni, I felt more like a Catholic, Chinese American. Nowadays, though, I feel more like just an American, part of a diverse whole.

When I think about (or people ask me about) places where I might like to live, Shanghai often comes to mind. Though, I feel like given time, I'd like Taipei plenty, too. To my delight, the week after, a friend treated me to local Taiwanese food.

I insist, studying abroad is among the most important activities in which an undergraduate can participate. I suppose this is why, even as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I helped locals and others any time they expressed interest in studying outside their countries.

Moments like these made me realize, perhaps I hadn’t readjusted back to the States much.

Counseling, August 2020

Mental health is a theme of my Honors College alma mater’s 2020-21 academic year. Week 23 (Aug. 7–13) ended with me finally getting a chance to use Peace Corps’ mental health readjustment sessions. I got to see a psychologist and chat about the communications challenges within my family and neurodiversity.

We sat outside at a Starbucks table. At one point, the counselor gestured me to look around, taking in the many around us talking and going by, the cars on the nearby main road, those stopping and starting in the parking lot and entering the drive-through. The counselor described how we’re surrounded by people who struggle to wholeheartedly listen to each other.

My counselor mentioned that sometimes the best choice we can make is to leave those who bring us down, even if they’re our loved ones.

He’d asked how accepting my immediate family was of difference. I hesitated to answer. Still, I remembered my younger sister had been kinder to me in recent months. She’d been studying cognitive science as an undergrad, plus she’d studied in Greater China before the Hong Kong protests evacuated her home. I felt like she was an Ally.

Since I mentioned that I’m Christian, the counselor still advised that I work on my weaknesses if I felt called to it. But, he insisted more that I remember the importance of grace. People do not change people. God changes people.

On a trip to hike around Tahoe, I discussed my findings with my siblings. I've still a tricky time ahead. But, we’ve all tricky times to brave. Wholehearted vulnerability helps us.

National Parks, North

I like the quote, "You must go on adventures to find out where you belong" (Sue Fitzmaurice). Years ago, my high school student council had a wall-sized poster with the quote, which I moved into our writing center after the event. Years later, I still consider adventures vital.

I'd reconnected with friends who had been like mentors to me in high school and uni. Turns out that they've been doing national parks trips. One of the guys had a parks pass. I got an invite and brought my family friend! I recount now our inside joke-laden adventures.

Californian Wonders, September

The weekend starting Week 28 (Sept. 11–17), we saw Lassen Volcanic, Burney Falls and Tahoe’s Emerald Bay. Shockingly, we drove closer to the fires’ sources, but the national parks had better air quality than Reno.

On the drive, my friends and I felt quite impressed any time we passed Smokey Bear labeling Today’s Fire Danger as “Very High” instead of the more common “Extreme.” To some degree, I wondered if apocalyptic skies resemble these.

We witnessed a comically colossal number of national and state forests but also devastated areas. I felt awed to see trees that fires so recently blackened. The sights resembled what I imagined could be a setting fitting for a climactic battle between warriors of good and evil. We drove on.

At Lassen Volcanic, we hiked the scenic Bumpass’ Hell trail. I enjoyed the trees then how Sulfur Works gashed the land. I spoke in Chinese with some folks from San Francisco! Overall, I enjoyed the freedom and exploration with my friends. My family friend brought rice balls, so we had those as our snack by Lassen’s an Emerald Lake. We didn’t find a Cathedral Rock, though.

By sunset, we considered Burney Falls our journey’s highlight. Those colossal falls beneath the world had water pouring from seemingly every pore of the rocks. I loved the soaring trees and the feeling of fresh mist. I remembered a national forest park in Hunan, China, to which my relatives brought me in the summer of 2017. Here and there, we took many, many photos.

Weed, California, and Beyond

Our stop in the college town for “higher learning,” Weed, Calif., was rather comical since the Air Quality Index was 336 (considered ‘hazardous’). But that night that will live in infamy, my friend and I really wanted to catch the legendary Pokémon, Cresselia. So, face masks on, we ventured beyond our motel to raid and capture it. My uni alma mater friend’s refrain about me: “fearless.”

The next morning, we all wanted to see Crater Lake, but with reports of incredibly thick smoke, we accepted that this was not our time. Instead, we returned to Reno, rested, then the last morning visited Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay instead.

I got to hug giant trees, which filled me with joy. I love towering trees. As another of my friends said, their “fat bottom[s] … make the rockin' world go 'round.” We enjoyed listening to Queen, the Beatles and Bon Jovi on our trip.

Coming Home

After the national parks adventures, I’d returned to Vegas. My luggage had returned from Mongolia, so I’d all my belongings once more. Sorting these and Mom’s old belongings, I listened to a Marie Kondo book.

I also had more yard work to do, which gave me more time to reflect on my counselor’s advice to take time away from my family. Living away again could help. I noticed that I often enjoy working with people younger than me. I suppose this relates to my affinity for teaching, during which I usually spend time with young folks. Well, here’s a story.

Pleasant Lil’ Story

A warm Vegas day in Week 30 (Sept. 25–Oct. 1), I was out in the front yard here clipping our palm trees when a large red van approached and parked at my neighbor's. As I continued to work my way around the palms, my back to their yard, I overheard doors rolling back and adults asking children to take inside groceries. I recalled the years when my family was like this before I'd left for college.

“What's your name?” came a high voice. I paused from my trimming and turned. I saw a short blonde girl sitting at the street curb in front of the house, hugging a watermelon.

“Daniel,” I called. Turning back to the palms, I add, "And you?”

She replied her name, which had a long /ā/ sound. For privacy, I’ll refer to her as Rachel. She asked, “Do you have kids?”

Turning to her, I smiled and said no—That's a funny question, I thought to myself. I just live here with my parents, but they're away, I explained.

Still with the child in view, I continued to clip palms. I recalled my Peace Corps service. Children would often ask if I had a girlfriend, haha. Such wonderful curiosity, they have.

Moments later, the girl called inquisitively, “Do you need some help?”

Larger than a beachball looked the watermelon to which the girl's arms clung, so I doubted she could help much. Still, I'd little left to do. I thanked her but respectfully declined.

She still sat at the curb, so I paused. I decided that I might as well chat. I asked how old she was. 8, I learned. She learned I'm 23. I smiled, commenting how it’s easier to remember a name like, “Rachel, eight,” than “Daniel, twenty-three.” The girl giggled.

She went on to number her siblings. She had many. I numbered mine and included my step-siblings. So, she added her parents to prove her family's larger than mine. Ah, children...

She said how her family's having a pool party today, adding that they have a pool. She felt excited because it was their first party.

I worried a little given that we're in a pandemic, so I simply reminded her to stay safe.

I imagined her family must be new here if this was their first party. I asked how long she's lived here. The girl scrunched her face with her head tilted up and turns toward the street, thinking. Then she turned back and said, about a year.

Her house's front door opened, and a woman (perhaps her mother) appeared and called the girl inside. I smiled and waved to both, resuming my work on the palms. Turns out I'd gotten new neighbors during my Peace Corps service.

More interesting to me, though, I felt touched by the girl's simplicity. No wonder we must be like children to enter the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 18:3). Children make better neighbors than us grown-ups.

I’d shared this tale with a few friends later that afternoon, Sept. 26. But, I’d enjoyed this moment enough that I wanted it to come through in a blog story. May it brighten your way, whether you’re religious, spiritual or neither~

Oregonian Crater Lake in All Seasons

Not long after the encounter, I’d returned to Reno for my sister’s confirmation. Starting Week 32 (Oct. 9–15), my national parks friends and I reconvened for another parks weekend. We made this round 2 (and 3) seeking to see Oregon’s Crater Lake.

American weather is wild. When we first came back, not smoke but fog and rain obscured our view. On third and final try, wind and snow challenged our view. Still, we waited. At lucky moments, we glimpsed Wizard Isle within the volcanic crater’s center. We still hiked the epic mountain trail to Garfield Peak. I loved its pine snow, low clouds and whimsy of the outdoor adventure. This reminded me of a trip my siblings and I took this summer to hike near Tahoe.

Amid our Crater Lake challenges, we’d hardly places at which to eat. Thankfully, the day when my friends at driven by my folks’ Reno home to pick me up, my Filipina stepmom was just finishing baking a cake. She insisted that we take the whole cake with us, which one of my friends, also Filipino, recognized as a familiar cultural thing. Well, Tita’s cake staved our starvation.

One more note on diversity! Since my friends and I were traveling through more conservative areas of the county, we decided to watch FOX News. Admittedly we’re fairly liberal, but we value political opinions different from ours. With less than a month before our national elections and the president having just gotten COVID-19 the week before, Americans wondered about his health.

Familiar liberal ideas aren’t the only solutions, nor are they inherently the best ones. By mitigating my biases, I hope to more clearly recognize alternatives. Biblically, one might compare this to Luke 6:42—addressing our faults before faults of others. Well, the trip gave us quite a break from our norms!

My Own Space

After the weekend trip and Fall Retreat at my college parish, I returned to Vegas to continue the yard work and resettling in. Having more to do helped me to feel fulfilled.

Ever since I’d left home for uni during August 2015, I’d no longer had my own bedroom at my family’s house. For the past five years, any time I’d visited home, I’d slept in the guest room, on a living room couch or on beds of my siblings who were away. Even since my return from Peace Corps this has been the case. I suspect on some deeper level, this contributed to why in the months since I’d evacuated from Peace Corps, I still felt this sense that I’m abroad and not quite home.

Well, with word late September that my oldest brother might move home with his girlfriend, the boys’ room would become their room. With our younger siblings in Los Angeles and Reno, that left another room open. So, I began to move into it for my remaining months in America.

Fast-forwarding to early November, I’d brought out my warm thick blanket and felt a touch of my childhood. I hadn't slept with it in this house surely since high school. Dad had bought it in Afghanistan when he was gone, serving the U.S. Army National Guard there.

My blanket’s depiction of the sun in the night became my symbol after Mom’s death. Mom had often called me a sunny boy. Though I’m a morning person, the blanket features too my favorite color, midnight blue. Amazing how these relate.

Good stories are like many Psalms—They end on proverbial high notes.

Holiday Hope

I began October accepting that it may be my last month in the States for a while. I ended it realizing I may have coming some of the best three months in a while!

A stay-inside pandemic Hallowe’en led up to remarkable national elections. The States had had record voter turnout. I think it's wonderful that in this nation people can seek justice when we have disputes. Our country's checks and balances keep society stable.

In other joyful news, my oldest stepsister's son is due mid-December. I imagine his dad will say many a, "Luke ... I am your father." I know I would! Well, both my father and stepmother will be grandparents to grandsons. Since last year, I’d met my half-nephew, from December, I’ll have a step-nephew! Lovely indeed.

And, although I consider driving among my most stressful activities, I’ve committed to retaking my permit test this December. For, I cannot let fears hold me back. I can embrace a fuller life.

Alright, for November’s story, I’ll touch on the national elections and Thanksgiving. Pleasant times! Still, my heart goes out to Mongolia, where they had their first community transmissions of COVID-19. Prayers for acceptance.

I wish you warm feelings this holiday and quote Bon Jovi (2020), “Although I'll keep my social distance, what this world needs is a hug.”

I Travel / I Travel in Time / I Travel in Time Until I Don’t.

Time THOUGHT, warping back to the year 2012. Touring / traveling at that time in my life felt completely logical / normal / sustainable . Regularly scheduled departures and arrivals to and from my home in Utah were the ways of what I truly believed were the “artist’s path”. The lady who had been sharing living space with me, seemingly ok with my erratic choice of “career," granted me freedom to explore the ins and outs of my constantly swelling and shrinking views on life, via musical endeavor. My direction / life, felt balanced, or at least a semblance of “balance”. All of this changed when the forces of life brought the strands of makeup from both me and my lover together in a beautiful array of cellular fusion. Our boy Oliver was to be birthed and like that life shifted.

Fast forward to November 28th-2017. I packed my car with a guitar, two bikes, microphones, papers, a typewriter and an urgent desire to create songs from nothingness. I drove myself to Las Vegas where I picked up Mr. Jordan Clark from the airport and we headed South-West to the land of the LAGOON. Mr. David Helfrich welcomed us with the warmest heart that I ever did experience, as we pulled into the gated community, located somewhere in Laguna Beach, California, we saw the sun set and felt fearless for the task. At first there was little talk of song-writing, the conversation was safe and bounced from theme to theme until dinner was over. As the dishes got loaded into the washer we talked of intention and locational purpose. The goal, as explained by David, who had initially dreamt up the idea of traveling to California for the SOLE purpose of song writing, was to try and write 2-3 songs during our 6 day stint of “surf-style” living. The schedule was easy, simple, freeing;

Rise when you rise

Write when you feel inspired

Explore the city

Enjoy your moment

Write when you feel anything

Sleep when you are tired

And like that we started our journey into the ethereal quest of creating something from nothing.

I have been writing songs for 12 years, but never had I set out with such a retreat to the land of writing, and solely that. With the directions laid before us of how we were to go about the day, albeit loosely, we began writing. I can’t pretend that the songs fell in our laps, and that there was not hard work, long moments of brain squeezing struggle for lyric, or melodic structure, but as the sixth day came to a close we put a nail in the 16th song of the inspiringly productive week. I had never written that many songs in that short of time, and felt elated, grounded and tired.

The next day both Jordan and I’s families flew in to spend three days in the sun lit sky of Laguna beach. The sand castles were built and destroyed, the street tacos and hotel room service-delivered pizzas were consumed, and I felt rejuvenated.

Saturday morning came crashing through the windshield of our car as we headed north toward our home state. We stopped in Las Vegas to see my parents. As we sat in the decadently decorated living room of my parents “new” abode (Since retirement in 2016) we quickly realized that we were too tired OR too unwilling to continue our journey north to Willamette MTN. We conversed with the two statutes of my existence until my Mother had to be off for the sake of her students, she is a piano teacher. I suggested, to Emma, that we take bikes to the foot of the Red Rock loop and cycle it together. She, being the supportive and adventurous woman that she is, obliged. We parked our car at 3:42 pm at the base of the loop and started to pedal our way in. The air was brisk on our skin but the golden rays of the sun warmed us and kept us at a comfortable temperature. We reached the peak of the loop at 4:23 pm, I took a quick photo of Emma as I noticed that the sun was already beginning her crouch, sinking behind the Nevadian Mountains.

My Bird / Red Rock Canyon / Bird Flipper

“Well, no more photos, your phone just died. I hope ya won’t need to take any more on the way down.” I laughed quietly as I packed the battery-less mini computer into the back pocket of my backpack. The ride down the loop was approximately 9 miles and the air had already dropped since we started our biking, I expressed concern to Emma about the temperature, and told her we better get going. At about a mile into our return down the loop my hands were feeling the strain of the frigid air, feeling in my extremities was quickly disappearing. The sun was dropping quicker than I had anticipated, I turned to Emma,

“Once that sun drops behind the ridge it is going to get really cold…

I am happy to race up ahead, get the car, park the car at the bottom of the loop (it was about 2 miles from the exit), grab your coat and gloves and race back up the loop to bring you some warmth.”

She agreed to the proposition and I raced up ahead, as quickly as my legs would carry me, to the bottom of the loop. As I was exiting onto the main drag that would lead me to the car I couldn’t feel my hands, a realization quickly followed that Emma too was feeling the temperature drop and that time was of the essence. I got to the car and fumbled for my keys, my hands were not working in conjunction with my brain’s demands, I couldn’t get my fingers to properly grasp the key to insert it into the key slot. I blew on my hands and then persuaded them to play nicely, and I was in. I was chattering when I parked the car at the bottom of the loop. Quickly as my body could muster I grabbed a coat for Emma, gloves and started up the Red Rock loop, backwards. The loop is a one way and I was NOT traveling with traffic, my lack of bike light was causing drivers to swerve around me, barely keeping me in the game of the living. At this point there was next to no sunlight left, just a soft glow, fading quickly behind the eastern ridge.

“EMMA! EMMA!” I screamed up ahead of me, hoping there would be some sort of distant response. By this point I was losing my calm and panic was seizing my composure. I had biked back up the loop 3 miles and there was no sign of her. My options, at this point, were few, either continue up the loop looking for her with next to no light, and eventually NO LIGHT, or… turn around, and race up and around the loop with the car, in hopes that she is somewhere off the shoulder. Neither of these options were of much comfort, but I opted for the first. I raced back down the road and pulled the car back onto the main drag toward the entrance of the Red Rock park, near the place where we had parked initially. As I passed the area where we had parked I noticed a white CRV, lights on, stationary. The car began to honk. Could it be? Had Emma found a ride, with her bike, down the loop? I pulled to the shoulder, and like an angel from the heavens Emma came racing around to the passenger side of the car, teeth chattering and face frozen, but relieved. I haven’t felt fear like that in a long time.

With the whip of the wind our reality can escape, distort, dissolve.

I am grateful for this wicked ride, this weird turnpike, this insane existence,

We’ve seen so much on this adventure but 200 miles of this view? Nothing has compared to it. Hiked for hours and my legs will never feel the same

This morning we went for a long walk through the neighborhood I grew up in. We walked down the court where I played kick ball with all the other kids, showed Ella the trailhead that leads to my secret hideout, and passed the park where I kissed my first love. My whole life I was so desperate to leave this place. I wanted to escape so badly and would dream of all the places I’d get to explore some day. But it’s funny now that I get to do exactly what I always dreamed of, I drive thousands of miles across the country to get back here. To see the place I deemed mundane and boring. To type this from the kitchen table where I ate breakfast every day before school and had to endure way too many “family talks”. Traveling for me is exciting, intoxicating, and constantly teaches me new things that I would probably never learn otherwise. But being home is familiar, comforting, and re-teaches me all the things I’ve already known but forgot somewhere along the way. – So many of us are desperate to escape. To get out there and leave it all behind. But I wish I would’ve seen this place for what it was all along. Don’t be like me and wait until you return to find the magic where you are now. There’s a kind of beauty in the boring that you won’t find in the excitement.

In mid-October I took a few weeks off from the newspaper for a Southwest Adventure in Colorado and southern Utah. After a brief stop in Colorado Springs, I headed west along scenic byways to visit around a dozen National Parks and National Monuments. Mid-October was a bit past the prime leaf peeping season in Colorado and Utah. Many of the Aspen trees, particularly at higher elevations had lost their leaves, but the brilliant yellow leaves of the Cottonwoods along stream beds in picturesque mountain valleys made up for this.

My first camp site after leaving Colorado Springs was the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. I stopped at the park in part because it was a convenient one day journey from the Springs. I arrived late, but had no problem finding a campsite. The deep and narrow black granite canyons are very impressive. I also discovered that my attempts to photograph them did not do them justice.

The next day I hurried south through mountain passes between Ouray and Silverton to avoid a predicted snow storm and then west to Durango and Mesa Verde National Park.

I remember visiting Mesa Verde years ago. Back then the park was crowded but with some restrictions, visitors could pretty much wander through the ruins at will. Now visitors are pretty much restricted to guided tours of the cliff dwellings by park rangers. In mid-October the crowds were not a problem, but some tours were closed for the season and others sites were closed for repairs. It is too bad, but I understand the need to control access. Mesa Verde has long been a popular tourist destination, and without some restrictions, the park would be loved to death.

From Mesa Verde I traveled west toward The Sleeping Ute – a cluster of peaks that together look like the profile of a sleeping Ute Indian. The landmark is visible throughout the Four Corners region of southwestern Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, northeastern Arizona, and southwestern Utah.

While browsing over my map at breakfast, I noticed I was just a short distance from Hovenweep National Monument near the Colorado and Utah border. “Hovenweep” means “deserted valley” in Ute/Paiute. The unique tower and fortress structures as well as granaries, dams and residences at Hovenweep date from around the same time as Mesa Verde. According to a brochure, in the late 1200’s, Hovenweep was home to 2,500 residents. Due to drought conditions and other factors, by the end of the 13thCentury people began leaving the area.

An hour west of Hovenweep is the sprawling Bears Ears National Monument. The signature “Bears Ears” are twin buttes that rise above the surrounding elevation and are visible from as far away as Mesa Verde nearly 150 miles away.

The Bears Ears area is the ancestral home of the Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Pueblo of Zuni and Ute Tribe. The Bears Ears Monument was established by President Obama on December 28, 2016. The formation of the monument was the result of a cooperative land management agreement between the Tribes and federal agencies.

The Bears Ears National Monument region is named after the twin ear shaped buttes that dominate the landscape of landscape of a region of south-west Utah.

On December 4, 2017, President Trump signed an executive order to redraw Bears Ears National Monument. Under the executive order, the size of the monument could be cut in half.

North of the State Park the steep, gravel and sometimes single lane Moki Dugway climbs along the edge of sandstone cliffs to the top of Cedar Mesa and Muley Point Overlook. The view from the Overlook is spectacular and second to none.

In addition to some beautiful photographs and some good stories, traveling in the southwest helped to renew my sense of time and perspective. The rock formations are timeless. Traces of human history in the area date back 13,000 years. Archeological sites, petroglyphs and pictographs – many of which are inaccessible and hidden – date back as much as 5,000 years.

Flying 3500 miles in five days—and enjoying every minute of it

A bucket list of unique, challenging, and scenic flying destinations has been on my desk since I was inspired by the Pilot Getaways magazine created by John and George Kounis many years ago. More recently, AOPA Travel Pilot, FunPlacesToFly, and SocialFlight have carried on that legacy. My list never seems to get shorter, regardless of how many locations are checked off.

The addition of a Bearhawk Patrol and its capabilities to my hangar in 2017 increased the length of the list considerably. The arrival of my first “Beartracks” newsletter made me aware of an annual fall picnic hosted by Bob Barrows at his Fincastle, Virginia, airstrip. I pulled out my list and made another entry.

The Barrows picnic on October 19, 2019, was chosen as the goal and planning commenced. It quickly became apparent that there were two possible routes around the biggest obstacle—Lake Michigan. Planning for both gave options in the case of weather challenges as well as the benefit of being able to check more items off the list. The 1269-mile trip from Manitoba, Canada, to Fincastle around the bottom of Lake Michigan would include North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia.

South down the shoreline of Lake Michigan, or north around the top? Only one route has this view.

The 1390-mile route over the top through Michigan would bring the total up to 10 states. Using my dog-eared bucket list, along with talking to Bob on the phone, I drew up state-by-state lists of interesting waypoints and marked all those relatively close to our routes on the map. ForeFlight made developing a route easy, and it provided airstrip information including contact information for PPR (prior permission required) private airstrips. AirNav.com was my source for airstrip information for each planned stop that was printed and filed in a binder easily available in flight.

While my wife Beverly has been unwavering in her support of my aviation addiction and has accompanied me on many flights, she was not interested in another flight over the Appalachian Mountains, as our last two flights there had been in marginal weather. I was lucky enough to bring along Rick Hiebert, a friend who not only loves flying, but is a professional photographer as well. He set up four GoPro cameras and took along his digital SLR with a full set of lenses. We packed sleeping bags, freeze dried food, and survival gear that we had put together for a previous trip to Utah.

The eAPIS was filed for first thing on Wednesday, October 16. Unfortunately, fog delayed our departure until mid-afternoon, but the CBP agents were understanding and gave us no trouble at all. We made about 550 miles that first day, ending up at Waupaca (PCZ). Perfect weather allowed an early start the next morning, and we flew past the Chicago skyline using the Chicago FLY route (on the back of the Chicago VFR TAC or from the ForeFlight Documents tab). The view at 1500 ft. was unbelievable and the route was no hassle and not busy. Everybody should do it! I cannot recommend this too highly.

From there, we went southeast to overfly the unique Adams Mill and covered bridge on Wildcat Creek, then headed across Ohio and a corner of Kentucky. Our first stop in the Virginias was at I41 (Robert Newton), a scenic grass strip on the east shore of the Ohio River that is used as a parachute jumping base. We then crossed back over the Ohio River to refuel at Huntington (HTW)—nice approach over the river—before having a lot of fun doing landings and takeoffs at WV08 (Scott’s Island) a grass strip cut through the trees on an island in the Kanawha River, about 10 miles from Charleston.

Finally, we flew to Merifield (VG34), an airpark with a beautiful grass strip on the shore of the John H. Kerr Reservoir, where we were graciously hosted by Rick and Lee Baldwin. Friday morning’s agenda started with a tour of the Luray Caverns (LUA). Next was a stop and go at the spectacular Sky Bryce (VG18) ski and golf resort, flying the amazing Gauley River Gorge, an overflight of SXL and the adjoining Summersville Lake, and then over to Rainelle (WV30), a private mountaintop grass strip with unbelievable views. The day ended with a flight over to VA04, where Bob and Diana Barrows graciously hosted us for the night.

We used the following morning checking out more of Virginia by air, leaving Fincastle with frost on the grass, lifting up into perfectly calm air. The target was Springwood (08VA) but as we cleared the hills east of Fincastle we saw solid fog covering the area, so we diverted towards the north and our next stop of Ingalls (HSP), when we encountered the utterly amazing, once-in-a-lifetime sight of a mountain top with a grass strip penetrating a few feet above the fog! Checking it out on ForeFlight, we found that this was Big Hill (44VA). A few circuits gave us some marvellous pictures and video before we continued on to Healing Springs and then back to the Barrows for the picnic at noon.

I cannot adequately express how much we enjoyed this day. The food was great (fortunately the Bearhawk aircraft can handle a big load) and both hosts and guests were wonderful. This event has my very highest recommendation! We would have loved to stay the entire day but due to weather that was forecast to deteriorate later that day, we left at mid-afternoon, with the first stop being for fuel at Greenbrier (LWB).

The next waypoint was New River Gorge (WV32), but rather than going there directly, we flew the canyon for a number of miles, starting at Gauley Bridge. Here, we had another serendipitous experience. As we approached the New River Gorge Bridge, we saw that it was crowded with people who were enjoying the annual Bridge Day festivities. For those of you that are not aware of this annual one day event, hundreds of people jump, rappel, catapult, and para-sail off the 876 ft. high bridge, before thousands of spectators.

When we came around the corner and saw the ropes and parachutes going down from the bridge from a couple of miles away, it took a little while to figure out what was happening, but we climbed up and watched the fun from above before turning to the northwest. This was another once-in-a-lifetime item we were privileged to experience on this trip.

A trip like this is how you really get to know an airplane.

Now truly heading home, we stopped at Cadillac (CAD) for the night. Next morning we flew across the top of Lake Michigan, stopping in at South Fox Island (3M12) and North Fox Island (6Y3) and then flying through the gorgeous Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. One last stop for fuel at Helgeson (TWM) followed by a no-hassle customs stop at Piney Pinecreek (48Y), a unique airstrip that straddles the US/Canada border, and then back home.

Flight stats: 3450 miles in 26.4 hours over five days with four stops for fuel.

Some lasting impressions:

The aviation community truly is warm and friendly. We had positive interactions with each one along the way. Every person I contacted for permission graciously granted it, and many went above and beyond by offering meals and/or accommodations.

Doing things outside our comfort zone allows us to experience and see things that simply would not be the case if we just stay with what we have always done.

Time spent planning and researching is well worth the effort. Knowing routes, elevations, dimensions, slopes, and frequencies in advance made the trip not only much safer but also a lot less stressful.

The extra hassle of documenting special events with pictures and video has many benefits. It allows us not only to relive the adventure ourselves but also to share the experience with others, rather than have it fade into our (increasingly) foggy memories.

The Bearhawk Patrol is an amazing aircraft. Not only does it allow safe operations at full gross into and out of small strips at higher altitudes, but it can also cover long distances efficiently. It functions really well as a photo platform with great visibility to both sides and open windows offering the possibility of high resolution photography. Fuel capacity at over five hours endurance is excellent for exploring remote areas and is more than sufficient to outlast most bladder endurance limits.

Outbreak of World War II brought the establishment of military bases in the area that strengthened the nation’s defense, boosted the local economy, and created a dramatic change in Tooele’s history. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, a 25,000-acre tract southwest of Tooele was selected as a site where the Tooele Ordnance Depot was built in 1942. A storage depot for chemical weapons was also constructed 20 miles south of Tooele City. These weapons are now being destroyed by incineration at the Deseret Chemical Depot. Tooele’s heritage was further enriched in the 1950s and 1960s as many Hispanic families moved to the area to support the expanding mission of the depot. Men and women of Tooele played vital roles in supporting the soldiers in the field during World War II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. The name of the depot has changed from Tooele Ordnance Depot to Tooele Army Depot and most recently TEAD. The TEAD workforce that once reached as many as 5,000 employees has been reduced to about 400 workers today. About 1,700 acres of depot property was annexed into the city. The Tooele County Trails Committee, under the auspices of the Tooele County Commission and the Tooele County Department of Parks and Recreation, has created this website to inform the outdoor enthusiast about eastern Tooele County’s best multi-purpose trails and road cycling routes. The 20 trails and routes on this site represent only a fraction of the available areas in eastern Tooele County. They are listed here because the Tooele County Trails Committee has inventoried each one, determined GPS waypoints, and has installed and maintains trail signage. The trails are also officially recognized by Tooele County as open for the public’s enjoyment. This website is a work-in-progress. As other trails are inventoried, they will be added. A hard copy map of this website is also available and can be found at brochure racks.

ATV Trail Etiquette

Most of the trails featured in this publication are multiple-use, which means users may encounter hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers or ATV Riders at any time. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all, please follow these trail etiquette guidelines that have been developed and used by other trail organizations across the U.S. for years.

• Because horses can be easily frightened, hikers, mountain bikers and ATV riders must yield to horseback riders at all times. To properly yield for horseback riders on a narrow trail, stop and move downhill off the trail. A horse in panic will typically run uphill.

• ATV riders are required to yield to all uphill traffic—not just for horses. ATV riders that meet hikers and mountain bikers coming from the opposite direction, must slow down, pull over, and yield the right-of-way. ATV riders that meet horseback riders coming from the opposite direction are required to stop, turn off their engines, remove their helmets to lessen the horse/s anxiety, and not make any sudden movements.

• Mountain bikers are required to yield to all hikers and horseback riders, and except for ATV riders, yield to all uphill traffic. That means mountain bikers who are descending a trail must yield if they see a hiker, horseback rider or another mountain biker coming up the trail. ATV riders climbing a trail are required to stop and yield to all descending hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders.

• Hikers descending a trail yield only to other hikers or horseback riders coming up the trail. When hiking in a group, yield to single or pair hikers. Also when hiking in a group, hike in single file.

• ATV riders yield to all hikers, bikers and horses. Bikers yield to all hikers and horses. And hikers yield only for horses, and hikers moving uphill.

• Always be friendly, courteous and respectful to other trail users.

• Regardless of your mode of travel, don’t hike or ride on muddy trails.

• Many of the trails listed on this website have livestock gates. Users are asked to always leave the gate as they found it. But when in doubt, close the gate.

Does homeowners insurance cover theft from an ATV?

Comprehensive insurance will cover costs to the ATV resulting from a break-in, including vehicle repairs. Audio equipment that is permanently installed in your ATV is also covered. It takes care of any non-vehicular incidents that caused damage to your 4-wheeler – fire, theft, vandalism, and collision with an animal. • Medical Payments Cover: This is a good type of cover to have because it provides compensation for the medical services given to you after being hurt in a 4-wheeler accident, regardless of who is at fault. • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Again, like car insurance, if you have the unfortunate fate to get into a terrible accident where the other motorist either has minimum coverage or no insurance coverage at all, this type of cover provides you peace of mind that you are covered. • Accessory and/or Safety Apparel Coverage: This protects all electronic equipment and gadgets as well as upgrades installed in your 4-wheeler apart from the factory-installed ones. Also, trailer, covers, helmets, and other safety apparel or accessories related to your 4-wheeler would be covered.

If you race 4-wheelers or ATVs you will need to find a plan that specializes in this sort of use. Due to the added danger and risk associated with racing ATVs, you need to let your insurance agent know about your endeavors in order to receive the proper insurance product. In many states, if you use your 4-wheeler for commercial use, you will need to get commercial coverage that takes these factors into consideration. Regular ATV insurance will not be satisfactory if you give tours, lease out 4-wheelers, or use your ATV for any business endeavor.

These accidents can occur for many reasons, but with the risk of driving an ATV, most cases are due to the improper handling of the vehicle from the driver.
