Akureyri

I boarded the charter flight (Air Iceland) in the chilly wind. Soon we were in the sky and I could catch a real glimpse of the land. It was just white, with a coast on the left of the plane, and an expanse of textured land on the right. The airport was just as small, and easy to catch a $5 cab ride to the center of town. I stayed at Backpacker’s hostel, one of the best I’ve been in. Very comfortable, clean, great food and cozy bar area, fast wifi, and a large wood sauna downstairs. I spent the first day walking around the entire town. It sits on a bay, like most Iceland cities, with mountains on either side. The architecture was okay, there was an old part of town but didn’t date back too far. The Danish made it a permanent settlement in 1778. Akureyri is the second largest city in Iceland boasting a population of 18,191 including the University. As a larger city it has most amenities, and I was able to get an american-euro voltage converter from a camera shop, and do a currency exchange at one of the banks. I also visited a famous ice cream shop. It was soft serve and made from milk, not cream. They don’t have sprinkles here, but I got peppermint syrup and shaved coconut.

I spent three nights at the hostel and awoke everyday at 7am. The first day was white christmas weather. I ventured outside at 8am and found a breakfast place called Berl!n. It was modern and well kept, I watched the snow fall by the street lamps. It was in the plaza, very european like where the cars drive on the same cobblestones as pedestrians walk. I had a soft boiled egg, avocado, and smoked salmon a la carte. One thing about Iceland in the winter is that eating establishments are mostly closed except for lunch hour and a few hours at dinner time. A lot of the workers at the hostel were travelers themselves, as it mostly goes. There is something called Work Away that is quite popular - room and board in exchange for work. I met a few Americans and one Australian who helped me get to Husavík.
