HOW ARE YOU DEALING WITH MASKNE? _______________________________________________________ One of the best ways to treat maskne is to prevent it from occurring in the first place! How? Well, by keeping skin in balance, keeping skin healthy and pores fresh and clear. It means giving the area around your mouth and nose a little extra TLC throughout the day. An acid-soaked exfoliating pad is ideal for just that. I always have a jar of my favorite SELF/ish AHA-infused exfoliating pads on hand. In fact, I have a jar in my backpack so I can give my mouth area a quick swipe after removing my mask at the office. Unlike the famous, acid-infused Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily Peels from Dr. Dennis Gross, the SELF/ish Exfoliating Pads are affordable — and better for your skin. The SELF/ish formula contains 10% Glycolic Acid — an equivalent dose to Dr. Gross’ Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily Peels — in addition to Lactic Acid and the more gentle Mandelic Acid and Malic Acid. Keeping pores clear under the mask is essential. And the SELF/ish Exfoliating Pads are formulated with an ample amount of natural BHA in the form of natural Willow Bark Extract. Similarly to Salicylic Acid, it works to flush out pores of sebum and gunk that can lead to blemishes and weaken skin barrier function. The clean SELF/ish formula also contains multiple skin soothers and soothing antioxidant botanical extracts. As I like to say, as important as what’s in it is what isn’t. There’s no drying alcohol! I love these pads and have found them effective at helping me to prevent maskne around my mouth and nose. You will too! ARE YOU STRUGGLING WITH MASKNE, TOO? _______________________________________________________ I consider myself lucky for a lot of things. I’ve traveled the world — from Cape Town to Tokyo, Singapore to Moscow. I found what I love to do (write!) early on in my career and it nourishes me every single day. And, I haven’t experienced maskne — until very recently. My luck ran out I guess! Two weeks ago, I got a blemish just to the side of my nose. It got big! Two days later, another formed just below my bottom lip. Ugh, again?! I knew things were out of whack when one also formed along my jawline at just about the same time. Suddenly, I had 3 blemishes going on at once. I was mortified. It was my first attack of the dreaded maskne! If you haven’t yet experienced maskne, you likely will. I like to think that I take phenomenally great care of my skin, doing everything I know how to to keep my pores clear and refreshed each day. If you’re experiencing maskne now, I feel your pain. What is “maskne” and why does it happen? From Shape magazine: “Maskne occurs when sweat, skin oils, and bacteria are trapped on the skin while wearing your mask. Face masks can cause irritation by either physically rubbing against the skin, which can damage the skin's protective barrier, or by trapping moisture, which can cause acne.” If maskne can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. So, I’ve put together what I call the Skincarma Maskne Essentials — a collection of some of the best products to treat maskne and to prevent it from occurring. Have a look at my go-to treatments for maskne on this week’s new Skincarma Blog at skincarma.com. _______________________________________ SHOP THE BLOG: Purchase all of the Skincarma Maskne Essentials on the Skincarma Blog at skincarma.com! _______________________________________________________ 💟@zitsticka | Killa Patches 💟@selfishskin | Exfoliating Pads 💟@thisisbalm | Balm Labs Serum Hydrator 💟@skinfixinc | Remedy+ 911 Ointment . . . . . . . . . . #skincarma #menwhomask #maleblogger #skinfluencer #sensitiveskin #acne #maskne #selfishskin #treatyourselfish #zitsticka #balmlabs #skinfix (at Somewhere in Brooklyn) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGj-_2yHbqb/?igshid=155y1x30wki58

HOW MUCH DO YOU CARE ABOUT CLEAN BEAUTY? DO YOU BUY PRODUCTS BECAUSE THEY’RE CLEAN? _______________________________________________________ Reflecting on my days as a cosmetic department manager back in the 90s, the skin care of today would have seemed like it came from the distant future. A case in point is the onslaught of high tech treatments like the Dr. Gross SpectraLite EyeCare Pro LED Device for crow’s feet wrinkles, BIOTOC’s Medi Nanopen Pro micro-needling pen and, of course, invasive procedures like Botox injections for the treatment of deeper facial wrinkles (and migraines!). And then there’s the entire category of skin care called clean beauty — something that would have seemed otherworldly and foreign to me back then. Toxins in skincare products? I can only imagine how bad things were. The clean beauty trend is one of the most pro-skin health that I’ve seen in my entire career. The drive to compel skincare marketers to create skin care that’s truly non-toxic and healthy is unparalleled in the beauty industry. About 2 years ago, I started to pay close attention to the clean beauty trend and to seek out the best clean skincare. I no longer have to actively look for clean skincare brands and weed thru numerous products to find the best ones to promote skin health. New clean brands are cropping up weekly! Today, clean skincare has merged with affordable skincare. Affordable luxury brands like Ghost Democracy and SELF/ish are offering some of the best clean facial skincare at prices not much higher than what The Inkey List and The Ordinary offer. Meet SELF/ish and learn more about the cool, clean range of affordable skin care on today’s new Skincarma Blog at skincarma.com! _______________________________________ SHOP THE BLOG: Purchase all SELF/ish skincare on the Skincarma Blog at skincarma.com! _______________________________________________________ 💟@selfishskin | Facial Cleanser | Oil-Free Moisturizer | Exfoliating Pads | Eye Cream . . . . . . . . . . #skincarma #menwhomask #maleblogger #skinfluencer #cleanbeauty #cleanskincare #skincareformen #selfishskin #treatyourselfish (at Fort Greene) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGR_PtGHqZQ/?igshid=1p0ygmeruk43c

DO YOU USE ACID-SOAKED EXFOLIATING PADS? _______________________________________________________ I’m a long-time fan of the iconic acid-infused exfoliating pads from Dr. Gross. But 2 things prevent me from incorporating the Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily Peels into my regular skincare routine. First, they’re expensive at $88 for 30 pads. That’s $3 each! And, they’re not only soaked in multiple beneficial AHA’s, they’re also soaked in drying, skin-damaging denatured alcohol. Ugh. So I always have my eye out for a legit replacement. And I found one with the SELF/ish Exfoliating Pads. If you didn’t catch me using them this past #selfcaresunday on my IGTV, be sure to check it out! The SELF/ish pads are just $25, less than $1 per application. The formula contains 10% Glycolic Acid plus Mandelic Acid, Malic Acid & Lactic Acid. There’s also an good amount of natural BHA Willow Bark Extract to flush out pores and prevent blemishes. The clean SELF/ish formula also contains multiple skin soothers and antioxidant botanical extracts. But as important as what’s in it is what isn’t — no drying alcohols! Denatured alcohol is used to weaken the skin barrier to enhance penetration of actives like AHA‘a. That’s how the Dr. Gross Daily Peels achieve results. Rather than using drying alcohol, the SELF/ish chemists opted for Dimethyl Isosorbide. DMI is a 100% pure substance, sustainably extracted from corn sugar. It’s used to stabilize, dissolve and deliver active ingredients into the skin, similarly to alcohol. This is true innovation and a welcome alternative to alcohol. I love these pads — and have actually never experienced the kind of irritation I’m accustomed to with 10% Glycolic. Bravo, SELF/ish! DO YOU EVER USE A PHYSICAL FACE SCRUB? _______________________________________________________ While cleansing is to me a ritual and an essential component of my skincare routine, it doesn’t always have to be so serious. It can be fun, too! And that’s exactly what the new SELF/ish Facial Cleanser is — fun! The first thing you notice about the Facial Cleanser is its surprising liquid gel texture. It pours out of the tube with a silky, lavishing feel that I love. It’s also got a crisp, refreshing scent derived from the Lemon Peel Oil and Orange Peel Oil in the formula. I’m not a fan of fragrant plant oils in skin care; the only exception being a wash-off cleanser. In a cleanser, for me they have an actual purpose — to bring a little uplifting joy to the shower. And that’s where I most often use the SELF/ish Facial Cleanser — in my morning shower. It’s a wonderful, cleanly formulated cleanser that makes me smile. In addition to being a terrific cleanser, the formula also contains a beneficial blend of 8 exfoliating AHA and BHA acids. As with all exfoliating acid cleansers, it’s beneficial to leave it on your face for a minute or so to let the acids do their thing. You’ll see a bright, glowing complexion — a great way to kick off the day. The SELF/ish Facial Cleanser also contains tiny scrub particles that can gently slough off dead surface skin cells if massaged into the skin. I’m not into physical exfoliation. Given its effective level of acids, you actually get a more effective exfoliating benefit by leaving the SELF/ish Facial Cleanser on the skin for a few minutes. DO YOU PREFER AN OIL-FREE MOISTURIZER IN SUMMER? _______________________________________________________ It brings me such great pleasure to introduce you to the new, clean men’s skincare brand, SELF/ish! The brand recently launched with a full range of clean, effective, vitamin-infused skin care — 7 products in all; and all democratically priced — ranging from $12-$25. The SELF/ish daily skincare routine for men includes a facial scrub, eye cream, moisturizer, exfoliating pads and a face cleanser that I’m highly obsessed with. The entire 7-product routine costs little more than $100! To start, I took a look at the really well-formulated, clean and vegan SELF/ish Oil-Free Moisturizer! It’s a relatively lightweight lotion for face — with a kick. Like all of the SELF/ish products, it’s powered by a vitamin complex of B5, C, E and the Vitamin A alternative, Bakuchiol. It’s also got a hefty blend of antioxidants beyond the brand’s signature Vitamin Boost Complex. A scan of the INCI and there’s nourishing Chondrus Crispus Extract, drawn from red algae, and power antioxidant Ferulic Acid — Vitamin C’s stabilizing BFF. But the real complexion perfecting oomph behind the formula is the inclusion of a full range of exfoliating, pore-clearing acids. From the gentler PHA family, is Gluconolactone. The more powerful exfoliating AHA’s include Citric Acid, Mandelic Acid and Malic Acid. I love that the SELF/ish chemist opted for these three more gentle AHA’s rather than the more potent, harsher Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid. After all, gentler is the way to go in a daily moisturizer — and the Oil-Free Moisturizer delivers an ample exfoliating effect for daily use. WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO SUMMER MOISTURIZER? _______________________________________________________ Exactly a year ago this week, I had the idea of crafting a blog article about lightweight summer moisturizers. There’s nothing worse than skin care that’s too heavy in the heat. I got really, really into it and actually ended up writing two separate articles — each of which covered 5 distinct moisturizers for oily skin and all skin types in summer. After all, we’re all kinda oily on hot, humid days. Summer is the great skin equalizer! So here I am a year later, looking at the plethora of moisturizers I’ve accumulated in my journey. A lot has changed in skin care in the last year. Of course, there are entirely new brands that didn’t even exist last summer, including SELF/ish, Organic the New Beauty and Feuillete — all of which are featured in Part 1 of my two-part piece. These three are joined by two established brands, The Inkey List and First Aid Beauty. What all five brands have in common — a characteristic that none of the brands in my articles last summer shared — is that they adhere to the most widely recognized clean beauty standards. The brands’ formulas are devoid of common toxins, parabens, fragrance, sulfates, formaldehydes, essential oils, drying alcohol and even environmentally unsound micro-plastics. Read all about the first five of my summer moisturizer picks on this week’s new Skincarma Blog at skincarma.com! _______________________________________________________ SHOP THE BLOG: Purchase each of my summer moisturizer picks on the Skincarma Blog at skincarma.com! _______________________________________________________ 💟@thecleanbeauty.co | Clear 1% Centella Cream Serum 💟@theinkeylist | Peptide Moisturizer 💟@firstaidbeauty | Ultra Repair Oil-Control Moisturizer 💟@selfishskin | Oil-Free Moisturizer 💟@feuilleteskincare | Fresh Intensive Cream . . . . . . . . . #Skincarma #menwhomask #maleblogger #cleanbeauty #theinkeylist #firstaidbeauty #selfishformen #treatyourselfish #feuilleteskincare #thecleanbeauty (at Fort Greene) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCnn73KHFpy/?igshid=1op03ptm2zixt
