The Final Logo
I wanted my brand to be simple but give off the vibes of the 1920s prohibition era. Firstly, it was important for me to choose a font that emulated this period in time. I came up with several options that I was happy to go with. Out of the many typefaces that I experimented with, I have decided to use “Baker Street”.
This serif family is comprised of regular, italic and rustic style letters. We decided to call our brand “The Ladybird”. Initially, I had no symbols included in the design. But I felt there was something missing. I then decided to play about with Art Deco like shapes and I started to see the logo gain some personality. As Michael Evamy said in his brilliant book, ‘Logo’, “Words carry meaning; Typefaces convey character”. So in this instance, Baker Street was the perfect option for me.
When playing around with my chosen typeface, I tried to emulate the curvature of speakeasy-style logos that I had researched. So I decided to wrap my text around a path. This gave the wordmark my desired effect. To bring the wordmark off the background that it was placed on, I added gold shadowing to the text. This tied in well aesthetically with the symbols surrounding it. Stepping back and looking at the design, I decided that it needed an actual ladybird. I felt this enhanced the overall look and feel.
I am still deciding on which colour scheme I would like to use in my app. I have tried out variations and shades of dark greys, maroons and purples. I feel using a darker shade will represent the dim-lit speakeasy venues.
